Welcome
The New Forest is England’s smallest National Park, shaped and preserved by the unique uses and traditions for which it has become famous. However, there is so much to see and do in the New Forest apart from the natural attractions, wildlife and woodland. In this guide you can find everything you need to make the most of your visit from commercial attractions, cycle hire, watersports, where to eat and drink to the best places to stay in our beautiful towns and villages. You can also find out how we look after and preserve this wonderful National Park. Forestry England manages the iconic ‘Crown lands’ of the New Forest, where ponies and cattle roam freely across expanses of open heath, ancient forest and plantation inclosures.

DISCOVER THE NEW FOREST
Enjoying the forest all year round When William the Conqueror saw these acres of deer-filled heathland, pretty glades and wild wood more than 900 years ago, he couldn’t believe his luck.
The New Forest was to become a royal playground, set aside for the hunting of deer, jealously guarded and preserved, for the lucky few to enjoy. Today, the atmosphere of this ancient landscape remains one of perfect peace and tranquillity. You’ll give way to ponies and cattle, grazing freely, while deep in the wooded areas you’ll see deer browsing under the canopies of mighty oaks. Whatever season you choose to visit, the New Forest is an enchanting and magical place all year round. To get the most enjoyment out of the New Forest and its coast, start your visit by calling in at the New Forest Heritage Centre in Lyndhurst and/or St. Barbe Museum in Lymington, where you can learn all about its history, culture and heritage. 18

Spring
brings bluebells, and you won’t have to walk very far to spot the signs of Spring. From the bright green beech leaves and flare of yellow gorse, to the famous New Forest ponies and their skittering new born foals, or even a sand lizard basking in the sun.
Summer
brings bright mornings and endless evenings when you can enjoy the forest’s best kept secret – its 40 miles of glorious coastline. Meanwhile in the forest, the vibrant purple heather complements the array of colours of our many special and rare species of butterfly.
Autumn
showcases an array of stunning colours. Crunch your way on foot amongst the fallen leaves as you take one of our many walking routes through our wild woodlands. Autumn is also when the ancient right of pannage allows pigs to eat the fallen acorns.
Winter
is a magical time. It’s a season of crackling, frosted leaves; of snow and storms, dark, starry skies and dramatic sunsets. It is the perfect time to walk or cycle in the forest, and the bare landscape makes it easier to spot our deer and other more secretive wildlife.

Caring for The New Forest The New Forest may seem like a wild place if you travel through it and don’t take a closer look. But like most of our cherished woodlands and forests, they are managed. This long history of management for fuel and other forest products has created the diverse habitats that you see today, and where wildlife thrives. Today, the Crown lands of the New Forest (nearly half of the National Park area) are managed and maintained by Forestry England for people, wildlife and timber.
Fungi Please leave fungi for other people to enjoy. Fungi are essential to the New Forest’s internationally protected ecosystem. Foray leaders must apply for permission for educational excursions from Forestry England in advance. If you suspect or see commercial picking please call Forestry England on 0300 067 4600. Camping: There are 10 campsites in the New Forest run by Camping in the Forest, and a number of private sites. Please note that camping in the wild and overnight parking is not allowed in the New Forest. Driving: The speed limits on unfenced roads greatly reduce the number of accidents involving animals. Slow down and give walkers, cyclists, horse-riders and animals a wide berth. Be especially careful at night. 20
Birds: To help ground nesting birds rear their young safely, keep yourself, dogs and ridden horses on the main tracks from the beginning of March to the end of July.
Unidentified objects: Areas of the New Forest were used to test bombs in World War I and II. Please keep away from objects that might be dangerous and notify the police immediately on 999.
Litter: Your food and litter could harm the ponies and donkeys. Please take your litter home if bins are full. Ponies, donkeys, cattle & pigs: For their safety and your own please leave the animals alone – although owned and cared for by local people called commoners, they are unpredictable and best treated as wild. Please don’t feed or pet them; there is plenty of natural food and it’s best that they don’t come to rely on people’s attention. They may look friendly but they can bite and kick, especially mares with foals. Working Forest: Stay safe by taking note of warning signs and keeping away from work sites and vehicles.
BBQs and Fire: To reduce the risk of damaging wildfires, campfires are not allowed without the landowner’s permission. Disposable BBQs are only allowed at Bolderwood, Blackwater and Wilverley where stands and water are available. Raised non-disposable BBQs are allowed on the hard-standing of car parks, providing water is available. You can hire fixed stand party-sized BBQs from Forestry England (call 0300 067 4601 or book online) and from Hampshire County Council at Lepe Country Park (call 023 8089 9108 or book online in advance).

Cycling: Cycling is allowed only on the waymarked tracks and other designated routes. When approaching people and animals, call out a warning and pass slowly and wide. Ponies, cattle and other animals are free to roam the Forest and most of its roads. Be aware that animals are easily startled and may suddenly move into your path. Off road cycling in the New Forest is permitted only on certain routes. Please take a look at our cycling routes for more information. Please follow both the Highway Code and this New Forest Cycling Code which is supported by cycling groups and local organisations. If you are cycling in an organised event, follow the additional instructions to minimise your impact. 21

5. Knightwood car park Knightwood Oak Less than 0.25 miles
A short stroll to one of the most famous trees in the New Forest. Believed to have been planted before 1600, this tree is still going strong and is a spectacular example of the ancient practice of pollarding. Benches are located throughout. The path has a fairly smooth gravelled surface.

Beaulieu
Whether it’s enjoying a riverside picnic, exploring the charming High Street or visiting the worldfamous motor museum, the village of Beaulieu is a great day out.
Local Information Parking Toilets Post Office
Situated at the head of the Beaulieu River, the village dates back to the 13th century when the village grew up around the abbey, founded in 1204 by Cistercian monks on land given to them by King John, who had a royal hunting lodge at Beaulieu. Following Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s, Beaulieu passed into the ownership of the present Lord Montagu’s ancestors and has remained with the family ever since. The last Lord Montagu of Beaulieu founded Britain’s National Motor Museum, which houses more than 250 vehicles and includes legendary motor vehicles from all over the world, including the record-breaking Bluebird. th

Lyndhurst Lyndhurst is essentially a village retaining its charm and friendly atmosphere, although it has expanded a little to meet the needs of the 21st century. Known as the capital of the New Forest since William the Conqueror established it as royal hunting ground in 1079, Lyndhurst has been visited by kings and queens staying at the Royal Manor throughout the centuries. There’s no better starting point for visitors than the centrally located New Forest Heritage Centre, which gives a unique guide into the forest’s history and heritage. Towering over the skyline is the pre-Raphaelite church of St Michael and All Angels where the grave of former Lyndhurst resident Alice Liddell, Lewis Carroll’s inspiration for Alice in Wonderland, can be found.
