Guadalupe Valley Habitat for Humanity to break ground for 30th time

Charges dropped in arrest of Guadalupe County Sheriff's Investigator By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- A sergeant with the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office who was arrested in November has returned to duty after being cleared of all charges by the Caldwell County District Attorney's Office. In November, Nelms, an investigator with the sheriff's office, was placed on administrative leave without pay after being arrested and charged with assault family violence by the Cibolo Police Department.

Bianca Munoz, center, is applauded for her acceptance into the Guadalupe Valley Habitat for Humanity Program by members of the group’s Family Selection Committee and board of directors. That reality begins for her and her family as the group breaks ground on her new home this weekend. By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera "It's just really exciting to see the growth of our community. We started off really small in the early years of (Seguin) -- Guadalupe Valley Habitat for Humanity is Habitat. Twenty-five years ago, it was taking us over a setting out to make the dream of homeownership a year to build a house and now, we are getting to the reality this weekend as it prepares for a milestone of its point where we are seeing this growth and still getting own. more families and moving into buildings. So, we are really starting to ramp up and it's really awesome that Madeline Zwicke, the executive director for we are starting our 30th home at the start of a new Guadalupe Valley Habitat for Humanity, says the local decade and a new year. It's just perfect timing for us," non-profit organization this Saturday will break said Zwicke. ground on its 30th home. See HABITAT, page 2

Today, Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke says Nelms has been cleared of those charges and has been allowed to return to work. "Of course, it's an unfortunate thing. After the complete investigation, I mean Cibolo did what they had to do that particular night based on what they had but other things came to light and the special prosecutor in Caldwell County looked into the whole thing and at that point, it was declined," said Zwicke. According to the Criminal District Attorney in Caldwell

County's office, not only did the victim request non-prosecution but it reports "evidence indicating that the alleged victim was in fact the aggressor and the defendant (Nelms) was acting in self-defense." Zwicke says placing Nelms on administrative leave following the incident was protocol and says the sheriff's office is excited to welcome him back. "Once the allegation has been made, then they are put on leave. They are human just like everyone else and they have due process just like anyone else -innocent until found guilty and at that point when all the investigation was completed. It showed there was more to the story that initially didn't come out so we are happy with the results and look forward to getting him back to work," said Zwicke. Although back on duty, Zwicke says there has been some administrative sanctions placed on him. However, he says he will continue to serve out all duties as an investigator.

Habitat volunteers to begin building new home The home is being built in honor of and in memory of Jack Linden, a long time supporter and former president of the local organization. "The Jack Linden House" is being built for Bianca Munoz and her daughters.

by three houses. This will be the first time that the group will attempt this goal. The groundbreaking ceremony gets underway on Bowie Street at 3 p.m. Saturday. Those wishing to learn more about Habitat for Humanity are asked to call 830-401-0422.

Zwicke says to have the Munoz's home built in Linden’s memory is an incredible opportunity for the local organization. "I did not know Jack Linden myself. It was before my time here at Habitat but all of our board of directors and even volunteers in our organization speak very highly of him and say he was always around and involved and he served on our board for many years and I believe he was actually one of our past presidents so he was very involved in Habitat and with his passing, we thought it was a good time to name the home in his honor," said Zwicke. Again, the local organization encourages the community to come out and show its support. Zwicke say this might even be a good time for future Habitat for Humanity applicants to come out and see this phase of the process.

Bianca Munoz, paints away as she puts in her sweat equity hours on the current building of the Habitat for Humanity home located at 517 Newton St. Munoz and her daughters are gearing up for the construction of their new home set to break ground this Saturday. HABITAT, continued from page 1 Volunteers say friends and neighbors are invited to join the group and the family as it officially breaks ground for the new home to be constructed at 1632 N. Bowie St.

"For this Saturday, they are going to get to meet a lot of key Habitat people. Our board of directors will be there. Our staff will be there and then they can just really get to know the family at that time so the family that we are serving, they usually invite their extended family and you just see real life people -- their dreams coming true and it's encouraging for people that maybe have the potential to apply for home ownership to see that we are just real people out there serving our community and that anyone can be a part of it and to just take that leap of faith and apply or get involved," said Zwicke. Seguin Firefighters promoted within local fire houses said Skinner. As for Vogel's replacement, Skinner says he's very pleased to welcome the promotion of one of the department's dedicated firefighters.

The promotions of four members of the Seguin Fire/EMS Department were recently recognized by Fire Chief Dale Skinner, far right. They include, from left to right, Captain Amy Flynn; Lieutenant Ryan Hale; Fire Apparatus Operator (FAO) Garrett Sanders; Fire Apparatus Operator (FAO) Sergio Guardiola and Battalion Chief Westley Krueger.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The Seguin Fire/EMS Department is celebrating its latest round of badge pinning and promotions. Fire Chief Dale Skinner says the department recently promoted four members of the department. Skinner says the new arrangement of leadership comes at the heels of the retirement announcement by Battalion Chief James "Jimmy" Vogel. "The rank structure of the Seguin Fire Department is, of course, we have the fire chief and then we have battalion chiefs and then captains and then lieutenants and then fire apparatus operators and those positions make up the leadership of the Seguin Fire Department and we're very fortunate that today, people in those roles have a lot of experience in the field of fire fighting and these promotions that took place is the result of the retirement of Jimmy Vogel. Jimmy's last work day is Friday, Jan. 10. Jimmy has given the city of Seguin 40 years of service as a fire fighter. So Jimmy is leaving a big hole in the organization. However, through our training programs and stuff, those shoes will be filled but of course his knowledge of Seguin and the area is going to be missed,"

"We have a battalion chief which is the highest ranking person on shift and so we have to replace the battalion chief and the person that was selected for that is Westley Krueger and Westley actually participated in a promotional process for that position-- I want to say in December 2018. So Westley Krueger has already taken over the reigns for Jimmy Vogel and stepped into that role and fortunately, we were able to allow Jimmy to (share) his knowledge with Westley before he leaves," said Skinner.

Dr. Nicole Talbot

Skinner says individuals will also be moving up the ranks as a new captain and as a new lieutenant. "Amy Flynn took that position. Again, she participated in a promotional process as all ranks -- which that promotional process involves a written test as well as an assessment center where they are evaluated on their abilities as a leader and then also from a tactical standpoint, making the proper decisions on fire ground. So Amy will fill in as the new Captain and Lieutenant is Ryan Hale. So, he has taken Amy's position as the newest lieutenant in the organization and it should be mentioned that the lieutenant and captain both -- they act as a company officer where they are responsible for everything that happens in a fire station," said Skinner. Skinner says the fire department is also pleased to announce the promotions of Garrett Sanders and Sergio Guardiola. The two men are the department's new Fire Apparatus Operators (FAO). "They both promoted to fire apparatus operator and their job is to -- they are the ones that drive the fire trucks and then once we get on scene to a fire, they actually are responsible for getting the proper amount of water through a fire hose to the fire crews inside," said Skinner. In addition to the promotions, the Seguin Fire/EMS

The Seguin Fire Department held a badge pinning ceremony. Receiving her badge from Fire Chief Dale Skinner is local firefighter Sarah Matisi. Courtesy photo Department also held a badge pinning ceremony recognizing Firefighter Sarah Matisi. Skinner says this particular ceremony is a very important one for the local department. "Sarah Matisi, she earned her firefighter badge and we do something a little bit different than other fire departments where we don't issue our new fire fighters badges. I believe that you earn the badge. You earn the right to wear the badge of the Seguin Fire Department and you do that by completing your probationary year where you are tested and retested and evaluated and once you complete that probationary period, then you've earned the right to wear the badge so I demonstrated that and she completed her first year of employment back in November," said Skinner. The badge pinning and recognition of the promotions were held Wednesday in the Seguin Municipal Courtroom.

OSHA Investigates Kansas Plant Explosion

Florida Tallies 32 New Hep A Cases

(Wichita, KS) -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating last month's explosion at a Kansas aviation company. Fifteen employees were injured in the December 27th incident at Textron Aviation in Wichita. Company officials have linked the explosion to a three-inch liquid nitrogen line that ruptured. OSHA has six months to investigate the explosion and issue citations or fines if it discovers violations of Health and safety regulations at the plant.

(Tallahassee, FL) -- Florida continues to add to its growing hepatitis A count. State health officials say 32 cases were confirmed last week, with the majority in Central Florida. The state recorded 33hundred-96 cases of the infection in 2019. That's a 500-percent increase from 2018.

Hospital Implements Visitor Restrictions

AI Can Diagnose Brain Cancer In 2 Minutes During Surgery

(Detroit, MI) -- An increase in flu cases around Michigan has prompted Ascension Michigan Hospitals to begin visitor restrictions at their hospitals. Children under the age of 14 will not be permitted to visit and only two visitors per room will be allowed to visit at any one time until further notice. Hospital officials are telling people to wash their hands or use hand sanitizer before, during and after visiting and issuing a reminder that visitors should be in good health which means no fever, cough or cold.

(New York, NY) -- Researchers at NYU School of Medicine say artificial intelligence can diagnose brain tumors during surgery in less than two and-a-half minutes. The research published in Nature Medicine on Monday leverages the power of A.I. with an advanced optical imaging system to accurately diagnose tumors while the patient is still on the operating table. Tests found the A.I. made slightly more accurate diagnoses than human pathologists in just minutes, rather than the halfhour a pathologist needs. More than a million brain samples are biopsied in the U.S. each year.
