Seguin PD seeks answers in murder of local man Crime Stoppers increases reward to $5,000 By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – The Seguin Police Department is on the search for the city’s latest murder suspect. Seguin Police Chief Terry Nichols on Thursday turned to media outlets in a virtual press conference to garner more clues behind the Jan. 23 death of Sam Flores Wallace Jr. Nichols is asking for the public’s help in finding the person(s) responsible for Wallace’s murder outside the Stagecoach Apartments located in the 800 block of W. Kingsbury St. Nichols says his plea comes after the findings by the medical examiner’s office. “An autopsy was performed by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office on Sunday. On Wednesday afternoon, our detectives were informed by the medical examiner’s office the cause of death was homicide due to injuries sustained by a sharp instrument. The victim has sustained numerous lacerations and puncture wounds in the neck area. We know Mr. Wallace was murdered sometime between 6 a.m. Friday, Jan. 22 and 3:40 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23. He was killed in the backseat of a vehicle he often slept in which was parked at the Stagecoach Apartments. We believe the victim knew his attacker or attackers and don’t believe there is an ongoing threat to our community. We strongly believe other residents in the apartment complex know who committed this brutal attack taking Mr. Wallace’s life,” said Nichols. See MURDER, Page 3

Kolbe Flower Shop delivers its final goodbye WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – After 56 years of delivering smiles and helping to lift up spirits, a local business has chosen to close its doors for good. Kolbe Flower Shop, a staple on North Austin Street, will be closing down the family operated business this weekend. For years, Kolbe Flower Shop has been a part of the thousands of celebrations in and around Seguin and even across the country bringing their custom floral designs, balloons and other special gifts to the respective occasion. It was in 1964, when Alfred and Mary Kolbe first began the operation. Son, Tim Kolbe says his parents not only established but maintained a tradition of personalized customer service over the course of those years. “Kolbe Flowers has been in business since 1964 when mom and dad bought it from another company who had a previous shop there. It was called Turner Flowers, I believe. Of course, I was only about three or four years old at the time,” said Kolbe. As far as the decision to close up shop, Kolbe says the decision was not an easy one. He says like other businesses, the current economic climate played a huge factor in their decision.
FRIDAY JANUARY 29, 2021
“For a business that has been around for that period of time, there’s always the desire to try to keep it open and hand it off to the next generation of folks and so, we tried to do that first with dad passing away in 2013 and then mom passing away in 2019 and the business climate as it is right now, just kind of led us to make that decision that there is a lot of competition especially with the big box stores and with COVID really affecting the number of people who are buying flowers and especially the funeral business without a lot of funerals being postponed. There just isn’t the business there to sustain it,” said Kolbe. Ever since the doors opened, Kolbe says four generations of his family have had a hand in the floral industry or have, at least, inherited plenty of good memories.
“My grandfather was around, and he was a funeral director at Goetz Funeral Home when dad bought the shop and then, you know, he wasn’t directly involved in it but then my father was involved and then us three brothers and then, we got children of our own who knew that shop very well -- spent a lot of time there. But now, our children have children. So, there’s grandkids also involved so there’s four generations of Kolbe’s that have spanned the period of the ownership of this shop,” said Kolbe. Kolbe says he and his wife
Cheryl are especially proud to have been a part of the business and family tradition. He says while they could have shut down years ago, its doors in large part were kept open for his late mother Mary. “We ran it. My wife went to work for mom and dad for somewhere around 2010 and she kind of became pop’s right-hand gal if you will and then when he passed away, mom wanted to keep it open. She always did and so we just kept it open for her. Of course, she had Alzheimer’s, but she still really loved to be at the shop to visit and after a while, it wouldn’t work any longer
with her being there but even in the nursing home, she would always ask about the shop so we were hoping to try to keep it open and hopefully, the business would come back. We were starting to see a gain in business in 2018 and beginning of 2019 but unfortunately, with COVID striking, it made it very difficult to do business,” said Kolbe. Although the flower shop will be closed, Kolbe says he along with his brothers Jeffrey and Scott will forever be grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such a wonderful piece of history. Tips sought in murder of man outside Stagecoach Apartments MURDER continued from Page 1 Nichols says they are also trying to figure out why Wallace was targeted.
“We do not have a motive at this time. There’s no indication that robbery was a motive currently. Due to the personal nature of the attack, we believe he knows his attacker or attackers just being in a vehicle and the crime scene being secured and him being such a local fixture in that complex, we feel pretty strongly that the victim knew the attacker or attackers,” said Nichols. Although he was known for sleeping in the backseat of his vehicle from time to time, Wallace did have an apartment where he lived with other people. Nichols says even though his detectives from the very beginning handled the case as a homicide, they still had suspicions of a suicide. According
to
Nichols,
Wallace did have a history of mental illness and had even been treated this month for mental illness and for cutting. Nonetheless, Nichols say they are searching for more clues and believes that someone knows something that could help their investigation. To enhance their efforts, Nichols says an increase in reward has been announced for this specific case.
“The Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information leading up to the arrest with grand jury indictment in this case. Callers will remain anonymous. This up to $5,000 reward is a temporary offer at this point and will not be good for long. Seguin Police Department Criminal Investigation’s Division continues to actively work this investigation. Anyone with information can also contact the police department at 830-379-2123 or again call Crime Stoppers,“ said Nichols.
Nichols says such a tragic death deserves justice. “This is the first homicide in Seguin since Dec. 14, 2019. I think as the city of Seguin we are blessed that we don’t have a lot of violent crime and last year (2020), I hope that is going to be our normal and this will be our abnormal.
These kind of situations are very rare. This is a tragic way to start the year and that’s why we really want to bring justice to the family and to Mr. Wallace and bring his killer to justice,” said Nichols. Again, those with information on the man’s death are asked to contact the Guadalupe
County Crime Stoppers at 877-403-8477. Cash rewards of up to $5,000 will be provided for information leading to the arrest or grand jury indictment in this case. Callers will remain anonymous. As Nichols mentioned, the up to $5,000 reward is only being offered for a limited time.
Longtime business to close at the end of the month
KOLBE continued from Page 2
“It was a big part of our growing up not only me but my brothers. We spent many, many hours there. It was a bicycle ride from home. We’ve grown up there. We played there. We met many people, and we value and cherish those relationships we’ve had. We’ve shared a lot with folks who come in even today and share a lot of stories about mom and dad and even Grandpa Kolbe so it’s very enriching and heartwarming to hear a lot of the stories. It’s really been kind of a fixture in town for all those times and I always remember
playing over at Weinert Elementary -- just so many memories,” said Kolbe.
Before doors are set to close at the end of the month, Kolbe wants to again thank the customers. He says they’ve always been the heart of the family business and for that, he and his family will forever remain grateful. “We really appreciate all of those faithful customers who have not only been friends of our family -- them plus their children and in some cases, maybe even their
grandchildren have continued the tradition of purchasing and doing business with us. You just can’t put a price on that. It’s just a gem. It’s something that we will carry in our hearts the rest of our lives and I know that those stories will still be coming after we close the doors. So, many people have wished us well and have expressed their love for what we have been able to do for the community for all of those years and we deeply appreciate them,” said Kolbe. Kolbe Flower Shop is located at 753 N. Austin St.

TLU’s Caeli Taylor named USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week for D3 Women’s Cross Country (Seguin) - Texas Lutheran first-year runner Caeli Taylor has been named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s National Athlete of the Week for NCAA Division III Women’s Cross Country. Taylor is the first TLU student-athlete to be named a National Athlete of the Week during a cross country season. TLU’s Marquis Brown was named the National Athlete of the Week for NCAA D3 Men’s Track & Field on April 4, 2017. Taylor ran in her first collegiate cross country meet this past Saturday and won the University of St. Thomas Celt Invitational in Tomball, Texas. Taylor won the 5K race in a time of 20 minutes, 19.1 seconds, eclipsing the second-place finisher by 13 seconds. “Being led by two freshmen on each squad bodes well for the future, and for Caeli to go out and win the whole thing was incredible,” said Darlene Holland, TLU’s head coach for men’s and women’s cross country, after Saturday’s race. “The time doesn’t indicate how she ran. She was
alone pretty much after the first mile.” TLU and Taylor’s next meet is the
final scheduled race of the season. That meet is the Southern College Athletic Conference Championship. The conference
championship is set for Saturday, Feb. 6 in Irving, Texas. The meet will take place on the University of Dallas’ campus course.

Schlueter
Del Schlueter, one of the sweetest men to ever walk the earth, left us yesterday morning while sitting in his chair; probably laughing at Seinfeld re-runs. Del, the 1951 Seguin high school class president was one of those people who never met a stranger. It would take him 15 minutes to get to his table at El Ranchito, because he had to stop and talk to so many people on the way. The 1955 graduate of the University of Texas School of Pharmacy and avid Longhorn fan met his wife Mary Willingham at the University and they married shortly after graduation. He recently received a letter from the Texas Exes mentioning that he was one of the oldest living season ticket holders.
She remained a Seguin resident and graduated from Seguin High School in the class of 1949. She married Erwin Forshage, of Seguin, on July 7, 1950. He preceded her in death in September 2006.
Mary and Del moved back to Seguin in 1968 where he worked at, and eventually purchased Williams Drug Store. Del was a true “Girl Dad”. He loved raising their 3 daughters, Jamie, Sarah, and Anndy, followed by their 2 granddaughters Lauren and Kelsey. (All of whom, he was proud to say, also graduated from UT.)

Frances Urquiza May 25, 1938 — January 14, 2021
Frances Urquiza, age 82 of Seguin, Texas, passed away Thursday, January 14, 2021. She was born on May 25, 1938 in Seguin, Texas to Saragoza Marez and Eloisa Hernandez Marez. Frances was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her infectious laugh would always bring a smile to your face. She was a great cook and housewife, usually preparing large meals, especially during the holidays. When she was more physically able, you would see her in the evenings watering all her lovely plants. She spoiled her children in their younger years and her children returned the favor in her more advanced age. In her later years, she loved getting on Facebook to see what was happening among her family and friends. She loved watching videos on that site, especially related to cooking. It was her favorite form of entertainment. She also loved playing Mexican bingo every now and then. She loved her children and grandchildren and looked forward to their visits. She was the last survivor of her family and there were days that it brought sadness to her. Our heart aches to lose her, but we are comforted in the fact that she is no longer in pain or suffering and that she is with all her family and loved ones that have gone before her. We also know that we will see her again one day. She is rejoicing in heaven with a young, healthy body and an eternal smile on her face. CDC Projects As Many As 514K COVID Deaths By Feb. 20
(Washington, DC) -- The CDC is projecting tens-of-thousands more coronavirus deaths in the U.S. over the new few weeks. The agency’s latest ensemble forecast shows the death toll could be as high as 514-thousand by Feburary 20th. CDC Director Rochelle Walensky explained during a briefing that now is the time to stay vigilant as case rates are still “extraordinarily high.” So far, over 428-thousand Americans have died from the respiratory illness. It is by far the highest in the world.
Fauci Says CDC Doesn’t Recommend Wearing Double Masks
(Washington, DC) -- Dr. Anthony Fauci says the CDC doesn’t officially recommend wearing double masks. He says they want people to wear at least one mask. The infectious disease expert told FOX News the discussion among health officials nationwide is about trying to get maskless people to wear one. This comes after Fauci told TODAY earlier this week that double masking makes common sense and would likely be more effective.
OK Attorney General Assists State’s Health Department In Selling Hydroxychloroquine
(Oklahoma City, OK) -- Oklahoma’s attorney general is helping the state’s health department sell a stockpile of the drug that former President Trump called a “miracle cure” for the coronavirus. A spokesperson said Tuesday Mike Hunter is helping the state try to return or sell its lot of

hydroxychloroquine [[ HIGH-drox-ee-klor-eh-quin ]]. The health department bought two million dollars worth of the drug last spring despite no solid evidence of it helping cure the coronavirus. At one point the FDA did grant it emergency authorization with extremely ill patients, but it revoked its approval last June. The FDA now warns it can cause heart issues in COVID patients.
CDC Researchers Say Schools Can Reopen Safely
(Undated) -- Researchers from the CDC say schools can open for in-person instruction safely with precautions to protect students and teachers against the coronavirus. They also say schools should move to in-person classes as soon as possible. The researchers made that case in a medical journal article published yesterday. They wrote that wearing masks and maintaining social distance have proven effective in limiting transmission of the virus in schools. They also say there’s been little evidence that schools have contributed in a major way to higher community spread.
England’s Schools Won’t Reopen Until March
(London) -- England’s schools won’t reopen until March. Prime Minister Boris Johnson says they may open their doors on March 8th at the earliest, but it depends on a lot of things going right. He says the goal is to get all schools to return at the same time. When they do, it will mark the first stage of lifting the lockdown. Johnson says he is looking to detail a plan for ending the lockdown in the last week of February.
