Pedestrian killed during hit-andrun accident

Authorities search for driver

(Seguin) -- The search is on for the driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal hit and run accident along FM 1978.

Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Investigators say at approximately 7 a.m. Friday, March 31, deputies found the dead woman in the grass near the shoulder of the roadway. Officials say the accident occurred in the 4500 block of FM 1978.

Preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian was the victim of a motor vehicle collision and the vehicle involved failed to stop at the scene. The victim has been identified as local resident Roseanne Alaniz, 39. Pronouncing her dead at the scene and ordering an autopsy on her body was Guadalupe County Justice of the Peace Sheryl Sachtleben.

The Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division is handling the investigation. Providing assistance are the Texas Highway Patrol and the Texas Rangers. Voter registration deadline is Thursday

(Seguin) -- If you've recently turned 18, are new to the area or finally looking to exercise your right to vote, then this Thursday is the final chance to make sure your voice is heard during this upcoming election scheduled for Saturday, May 6th.

That's because Thursday,

April 6 is the deadline to register to vote.

Lisa Hayes, the Guadalupe County elections administrator, says not only should folks register but they should also double check that their voting information is correct and up to date.

"That is the deadline for any

voters who have either moved to the county or maybe moved within the county and changed addresses but haven't notified us of their new address. That is the deadline for the voters to change their address or register to vote if they want to be eligible to vote in the May 6 election. High-speed chase ends in arrest in neighboring county

(Seguin) -- A traffic stop that began in Guadalupe County led to a high-speed chase into Gonzales County. Guadalupe County Sheriff's officials say just after 4 p.m. Monday, the sheriff's office dispatch received information that a stolen vehicle was being operated on US 90 east of Seguin.

Thirty minutes later, that vehicle was spotted by deputies in the 11000 block of U.S. Highway 90. When approached by deputies, the driver immediately evaded arrest taking off in the stolen vehicle.

Deputies pursued the vehicle through Luling and into Gonzales County. The driver ultimately crashed through a fence on private property off Highway 97 near County Road 108.

According to officials, the front passenger in the suspect vehicle surrendered to deputies, but the driver fled on foot. Multiple law enforcement agencies from Gonzales County, Texas DPS, and the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office participated in a search for the suspect. Officials say it wasn't long before the suspect identified as Steven Turley, 47, was apprehended.

Turley, who is from Cedar Creek, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, evading with a vehicle, tampering and/or fabricating with physical evidence, unlawful restraint, unauthorized use of motor vehicle, and an active parole warrant.

Turley remains behind bars in the Guadalupe County Jail in lieu of bonds totaling $385,000.

Applications now available to participate In Seguin Main Street events

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Main Street Program is busy planning and preparing for its spring and summer events. In preparation for the events, several applications have been released including the Earth Day Exhibitor form, the Spring Trade Day vendor application, and the Biggest Small-Town Fourth of July Parade application.

On Saturday, April 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Seguin Main Street will be hosting the annual Earth Day Festival where businesses, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations set up displays and interactive booths to teach the community about living a greener lifestyle. There will be plants for sale, games for kids, green product demonstrations, and lots of education.

If your organization is interested in being an Earth Day exhibitor, please complete the form on the Seguin Main Street's website under downtown events. To assist new exhibitors, there

will be an Earth Day exhibitor orientation on Monday, April 10 to provide additional details and what to expect.

While the Earth Day Festival is occurring in Central Park, surrounding the park will be over 80 vendors partaking in our Spring Trade Days. Vendors will be selling clothing, jewelry, yard décor, food, and so much more. Vendor spaces start at $45.00 a space. Applications to be a vendor can be found online on the Earth Day page of Seguin Main Street's web site.

Finally, the application to be an entry in the 2023 Biggest SmallTown Fourth of July Parade has been released and is on the Main Street's web site. Nonprofits, businesses, individuals, elected officials, and clubs are all encouraged to complete an application and enter their patriotic float in the parade. Applications for the parade need to be submitted by June 19 and confirmations will be sent out the week before the parade. There is no cost to have an entry in the parade, but all entries must be decked out in red, white and blue.

So, not everyone in the county is going to have a district to vote in but it's important because these are important decisions that are made in these elections. So, if the voters aren't sure if they are in a jurisdiction that is holding an election, they can either check our website or they can call our office. But regardless, it is essential that they are registered at the address at which they reside whether they do it now or they do it in November. Hayes says there's nothing more disappointing then having to send a voter away from the polls because they failed to change their address. Hayes say with many pressing issues on the ballot that day for various entities, it is important that folks who want to vote, get that opportunity.

"There's two different scenarios in the May election that can be a little bit confusing for the voters. There's elections that are being conducted by Guadalupe County and then there's some elections that have jurisdictions in Guadalupe County that are being conducted by other counties. For example, New Braunfels ISD, city of New Braunfels, Comal ISD, those entities come into Guadalupe County but Comal ISD is conducting those elections. Registering to voter or making those changes are apparently quite simple. Hayes says the only thing folks have to remember is to get it all done by this Thursday.

"They can go to the Secretary of State's website. The Texas Secretary of State has a website. It's votetexas.gov and they actually have a process there that will walk the voters through completing an application to register to vote and then they just print it out and mail it in. They can stop by our office and fill out the application right there. They can come in and pick one up and mail it back. The key with the April 6 deadline is that if they are mailing their application back, it has to be postmarked by April 6," said Hayes.

Among some of the featured ballots items are Seguin ISD's $7.5 million bond issue for a new baseball and softball complex at the high school campus and Marion ISD's $78.8 million bond issue. The bond referendum in Marion presents voters with various capital projects for the current and long-term development of Marion ISD schools across the district.

Marion’s Owen Schoenvogel Fires

No-Hitter and Navarro’s Bryce Nall Tosses One-Hitter on Monday Night

(Marion) -- Marion’s Owen Schoenvogel tossed a no-hitter in a 10-0 win for the Marion Bulldogs over Randolph on Monday night at Marion High School.

The senior struck out seven, walked only two and also had a big night at the plate to lead the Bulldogs, who are now unbeaten in five District 26-3A games this season. In addition to firing a no-no, Schoenvogel went 2 for 3 with a triple, walk and two RBI in four plate appearances on the evening.

Chase Hallmark, who competed for the Marion track team at the Texas Relays in Austin over the weekend, had two stolen bases and scored a pair of runs. Jaxon Garner also had two stolen bases and two runs scored for the Bulldogs.

With the win, Marion moves their record to 5-0 at the halfway point in the district season. The Bulldogs will next host San Antonio Cole on Thursday night.

(Geronimo) -- Navarro’s Bryce Nall fired a one-hitter as the Panthers beat La Vernia 7-0 on Monday night in Geronimo.

Nall struck out six and only walked one. The senior also drove in two runs as he went 1 for 2 with a walk at the plate with a run scored. Landun Taylor and Marco Moncada scored a pair of runs for the Panthers.

Navarro is 2-1 in District 28-4A play and will play at La Vernia on Thursday night.

(Cuero) -- And the Navarro Lady Panther softball team crushed Cuero 15-3 Monday night in Cuero.

Kaselynn Tovar drove in four runs as she smacked two doubles on the night. Samantha Mundine went yard and also had a double while driving in three runs. Samantha Wegman got the complete game victory in the circle.

Navarro is 3-0 in district and 18-9 overall on the season. The Lady Panthers host San Antonio Memorial on Thursday.

Marcy Lee Whaley Ramos, age 63 of Seguin, passed away on April 2, 2023, in Seguin, Tx. She was born on November 17, 1959 in Seguin, Texas to Shirley (Wendland) and Odis Lee Whaley.

Esther is preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, William Ray Benes, Sr. her parents, and her sister-inlaw, Pat Benes.

In Esther’s younger years, she loved to gamble as much as possible. She loved and was always happy to watch her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also loved her baby dogs – Sadie and Gracie and Josie.

John Brice Dikes, age 84 of Seguin, passed away on April 1, 2023, in Seguin, Tx. He was born January 11, 1939, in San Antonio, TX to Nora Lee (Brice) and John Alexander Dikes. John was a graduate of Brackenridge High School, Class of 1957 in San Antonio. He served in the United States Army Reserves from 1957 to 1966. For 38 years he was employed with City Public Service in San Antonio. John served on the Church Council at St. John Lutheran Church in Marion for several years. He and his wife Patricia are currently members of Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin. John was proud to serve as a Gideon, assisting many to receive the word of God through the distribution of the Holy Bible.

John had many interests and hobbies including riding motorcycles in his younger years, coaching YMCA Football, deer hunting and traveling. His most treasured times were spent with family and friends, especially showing hogs with his son and watching his grandson grow up through the years.

John is preceded in death by his parents.

4 Face Federal Indictments For Threats At Florida Pregnancy Centers (Miami, FL) -- Four people are facing federal charges for allegedly spray painting threats on three Florida reproductive health centers that offer abortion alternatives. The federal indictment unsealed this week accuses Caleb Freestone, Amber Smith-Stewart, Anarella Rivera, and Gabriella Oropesa of participating in a conspiracy “to attack reproductive health facilities that provide abortion alternatives” with threats of force and other intimidating messages on the properties of the facilities. The threats were spray painted on centers in Hollywood, Winter Haven, and Hialeah between May and July of last year.

Salmonella Outbreak Blamed On Raw Cookie Dough (Sacramento, CA) -- Stop eating raw cookie dough. That’s the new CDC warning as eleven states are dealing with a salmonella outbreak. At least 12 people have gotten sick so far, though health officials believe the number is much higher. The cases are all from December to mid-February. At least six patients said they ate raw dough or batter just days before their symptoms began, and all the products used the same flour.

CDC: Bacteria Linked To Imported Eyedrops Could Gain Foothold Here (Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC says it’s concerned that bacteria linked to tainted eyedrops imported from India could gain a foothold in American healthcare facilities. It says the bacteria is highly drug-resistant and spread person-to-person in a long-term care center in Connecticut. The FDA issued a recall earlier this year of EzriCare artificial tears after three people died, eight were blinded and dozens developed serious infections. Imports of Ezricare eyedrops have been halted.

Legendary Basketball Coach Bob Knight Released From Hospital (Bloomington, IN) -- Legendary college basketball coach Bobby Knight is out of the hospital. A statement released by his family Monday asks for privacy as he rests at home “in good hands.” His family also thanked those who provided their thoughts and prayers. The 82-year-old was admitted to an Indiana hospital over the weekend with an illness. Knight won three national titles at Indiana and over 900 games over the span of his career.

Ask the Master GARDENERS

Q: What is the plant that is all over my yard? When I walk past it, the leaves stick to the legs of my pants. Should I use weed killer on it?

A: T his is a question that comes up every year. Galium aparine, an annual in the Madder family, has many nicknames, including Sticky Weed, Sticky Willy, Velcro Plant, Cleavers, Goosegrass, and Catchweed Bedstraw. It is native throughout North America. Do try to pull it all up because you don’t want the seeds to form. Luckily the plant can be pulled out of the ground quite easily by hand. I already have gathered two large piles of plants. Weed killer does not need to be used.

Another question that comes up this time of year is whether or not to use a weed and feed product on your lawn. Doug Welsh, Extension Horticulturist, assures us that we should not do this because the timing for fertilizers is not the same as the timing for herbicides. He says that pre-emergent herbicides for summer weeds should be applied in late winter (February), and spring lawn fertilizers should be applied in mid-spring after you have mowed the lawn twice and it is actively growing.

Q: When can I move my plumaria and other plants back outside?

A: I have not moved mine yet, but will probably do so quite soon. I normally let my Phalaenopsis orchids spend the summer on the back porch (mainly to save having to use my grow light), but I want to enjoy

their blooms in my house a little longer. I notice that my neighbors already have their potted plants back outside. Make sure that the foliage on your plants doesn’t sunscald. Now is a good time to fertilize your potted outdoor plants.

Q: What vegetable gardening chores should I be doing now?

A: Fertilize your vegetable plants. Check your garden daily for pests and other problems. If your fruit trees have too much fruit, it is best to thin the young fruit to allow the remaining ones to grow bigger. Otherwise, as happened to me last year, all the heavy pears can cause the limb to bend or break.

Q: I’ve been told to buy produce in the store when it is in season in Texas. What produce is harvested in April and is available in local markets?

A: Many local vegetables and fruits are available in April: green beans, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, greens, onions, peaches and strawberries. Grapefruit and oranges are also probably still available. Look forward to May when much more produce comes into season.

FYI: Don’t forget to keep your bird baths full. And remember, don’t mow down your bluebonnets and other wildflowers when they finish blooming. Let them go to seed. Your lawn may look a little ragged but you will have many more plants next year.
