SHS salutes Valedictorian, Salutatorian of 2023

(Seguin) – If there is anything that the top students of this year’s Seguin High School graduating class can teach us, it’s perseverance. Not ever taking his eyes off the ultimate prize is this year’s 2023 Valedictorian is Kaden Legore. Legore is the son of Dave and Judge Kirsten Legore. Legore says earning the top spot is a plan he set in motion way before entering high school.

“It was the culmination of really years of work and that really goes beyond high school of building up the work ethic to get to this point. It’s the culmination of a lot of sacrifices that I made to get to this point and I couldn’t be happier to be awarded this. It really is a great honor to be among the other people that are on the Hall of Fame Wall over there – my past friends, my own brother – my older brother was valedictorian a couple of years ago. So, it’s really great to be in their company,” said Legore.

Legore says he plans to attend school in Iowa to pursue a degree in politics and already has his mind set on one day attending law school. SHS, pg. 3

Legore says with so many challenges before all students, his message to them is simple.

“I think if there’s any one message to the next couple of classes is to not let anything get in your way of your own success, to put yourself first,” said Legore.

Sharing the spotlight with Legore is this year’s 2023 Salutatorian Anastasiia Berezovska. The senior is the daughter of James and Marianna Nolte. For this senior, learning that she’d be leading her class was more

than she ever imagined. Much of that surprise was based on the fact that she had just arrived from the Ukraine to the U.S. in 2018.

“I couldn’t believe it. It was one of the most unexpected things I heard and until the last minute, I didn’t expect myself to be second student in school and it was one of the biggest things that happened to me because English is not my first language and I work extremely hard trying my best to learn and spent all my time reading the books – reading the chapters almost five times every single time trying to memorize new

words, trying to understand. For me knowing that I was selected number two is an extremely valuable and the most wonderful achievement and wonderful thing to happen to me this year especially after the COVID-19 happened and all of the schoolwork had stopped. It was so challenging to come back and get that education and relearn all things that were forgotten before and I’m so grateful to my school and my teachers, my counselors, my parents, my friends for their support and longtime encouragement even after the most challenging times happened,” said Berezovska.

During these past short years, working her hardest was not so easy. Not only was it about being successful in school but just simply going about her everyday life. When she arrived in the U.S., the senior says she couldn’t speak English or understand people. She says she often had to speak to people 10 times before they could fully understand what she was saying.

Now, although she always doubted herself, she says she always tried her best and appreciates those who have helped her along this journey.

“I remember trying to do my United States history homework and we were watching this CNN video and I couldn’t understand any of the words and my teacher was very kind so he turned in the transcripts to the captions so I could understand the words and I remember thinking that I wouldn’t be able to understand it and that’s there’s no way for me to understand that much words and I was doubting that I would be able to learn English at any other time. I couldn’t even believe that it was possible for me because it was so hard for me at that time,” said Berezovska.

She too looks to attend college but will be staying much closer to home than Legore. Her plans are to attend the University of Texas in Austin where she plans to study computer science pursue a graduate degree in cyber security.

The students will lead this year’s graduation class set to walk the stage this Friday at 8 p.m. at Seguin High School’s Matador Stadium.

Kris and Morgan Cavazos Leaving Navarro Baseball and Softball Programs

(Geronimo) -- The husband and wife duo of Kris and Morgan Cavazos are leaving their posts as head coaches of the Navarro baseball and softball teams.

Kris Cavazos announced on social media Monday that he and his wife will be taking the same positions at Ralls High School outside of Lubbock to be closer to his wife’s family. Kris Cavazos has lead the Panther baseball team for the last five seasons. Morgan Cavazos recently finished her first season as the head coach of the Navarro softball program.

After coaching at Abernathy High School, Kris Cavazos was hired as the head baseball coach at Navarro in 2018. Cavazos replaced Chema Chavez who had been at the helm of the Navarro program for six years.

Cavazos compiled a record of 110-44 as the Panther head coach. Navarro made the UIL baseball playoffs each season during his tenure with the exception of the 2020 season, which was ended prematurely during the COVID pandemic. Cavazos also served as the defensive

coordinator for the Panther football team. He coached 13 players at Navarro who moved on to the collegiate level.

The Panthers finished the 2023 season as the District 28-4A champions. Navarro advanced to the UIL Class 4A Regional Quarterfinals before being eliminated by Boerne this past Friday in a doubleheader sweep.

Morgan Cavazos served as an assistant under Navarro softball coach Darrell Harborth. After taking the season off in 2022 to have a child, she became the head coach for the 2023 season. Morgan Cavazos lead the Lady Panthers to a share of the District 28-4A championship in her only year as the head coach.

This past season, both Kris and Morgan Cavazos coached 21 student-athletes who made all-district squads for the Navarro baseball and softball programs. In addition, eight Navarro baseball and softball student-athletes were named to the all-state academic teams for the 2023 season.

Our beautiful mother, granny, and friend, Sandra Kay Gingrich Hollamon went to be with our Lord and Savior on May 18, 2023, at the age of 88.

Sandra was born in Kansas City, Missouri on Sept 7, 1934, and spent time growing up and moving to different towns with her parents and brother.

Sandra married Thomas Henry Hollamon III (Tucker) on June 12, 1954, and together they had 4 beautiful daughters. After being widowed she later married Delbert Schlueter on November 14, 2011, and was blessed with 3 beautiful stepdaughters.

Sandra loved life and was a true Woman of Faith, a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Seguin where she taught firstgrade Sunday school for many years. She was a very active mother of 4 girls and all of their friends. She cooked many meals for the neighborhood and everyone who happened to be at her house on any particular night.

She was a Twirler mom, cheerleader mom, and all-sports mom. After raising 4 girls she decided to open Sandra’s dress shop. It was not a surprise because she loved to shop and look nice and so she decided to would give that opportunity to others in our community. Bright colors, glittery things accessories, and adorable shoes (usually one in every color) were her go-to attire. She also loved going to luncheons and places with her special group of lady friends, even taking several vacations and trips together. Family and friends were always very important to her. She will truly be missed by so many.

Preceded in death by her husband T.H. Hollamon III (Tucker), her parents, Dorothea Grace (Lohoff) and Jack Edward Gingrich, brother Paul Gingrich and wife Meg Gingrich, granddaughter Abigail Elise Schriewer and 2nd husband Delbert Schlueter, mother and father-in-law T.H. Hollamon Jr. (Tommy) and wife Elizabeth and sister-in-law Elizabeth Hollamon (Budgie).

She is survived by her children Melyn Smethurst and friend Michael Murillo, Shannon Dukes, Lecia Schriewer and husband Randy, Mary Grace Hair and husband Mark, son-in-law Don Smethurst and wife Janet. Stepchildren Jamie Schlueter and partner Kim Moncel, Sarah Jones and husband Rex, Anndy Schashack and husband Dan. Grandchildren Benjamin Smethurst and wife Jill, children Lila and Cora, Christian Smethurst and wife Holly, children Claire, Thomas and Violet; Ashley Cooley and husband Troy, children Hudson and Parker; Zann Schriewer and wife Ashley and son Kent; Kinsey Evans and husband Chris, children Hayden, Kellan and Brooks; Cade Collins and wife Carly, children Finn and Scout; Tucker Bouchard, Michelle Spencer, children Wyatt & Levi. Nephews Jack Gingrich; David Gingrich and wife Amy, children Emma and Jacob; Brian Gingrich and wife Mariel, son William.

A memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2023, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. A memorial service celebrating Sandra’s Life will be held on Friday, May 26, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Methodist Church with the Reverend Ray Perales and Pastor Chris Evans officiating. A Reception will follow in the Christian Life Center (CLC). Private interment will be held at a later date in the Lone Oak Cemetery. Her favorite saying was “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass; it’s about learning to dance in the rain”.

Hollamon

Elizabeth Nesbit Schott, age 89, of Seguin, passed away on May 15, 2023.

She was born in Gonzales, Texas on May 3, 1934, to Gibson and Ruby Nesbit. Elizabeth (Beth) was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother. She was a successful businesswoman and entrepreneur. She also enjoyed antiques and remodeling older homes and historical buildings. Dancing and traveling were some of her pleasures in life.

Beth was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Dow Sherry and Claude Schott, siblings, James Nesbit and Jeannette Rone, daughter, Sharon Ann Sherry, and grandson, Jonathon Francek.

She is survived by her sons, Buster Lee Sherry and Ronald Dow Sherry; brother, Gibson Nesbit Jr.; 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel at 5:00 pm. followed by a funeral service at 6:00 pm with Chaplain Jimisu Stuckey officiating. Private interment will be held at a later date in the Devine Evergreen Cemetery.

John Henry Wieding, age 70 of Seguin, passed away on May 19, 2023. John was born on September 12, 1952, in Seguin, Texas. He was a 1971 graduate of Seguin High School. John retired after 30 years, with SMI now CMC where he worked as a maintenance mechanic.

John loved everything outdoors, especially hunting. He loved welding and barbecuing including building and welding barbecue pits. His favorite times were spent among family and friends, particularly with his grandchildren who never wanted to miss any of their activities.

He is preceded in death by his father, Wilson Maddox, and his brother, Curtis Wieding.

Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Brenda Kay Wieding; son, Wesley Warren Wieding and wife, Terri; grandchildren who knew and loved him as Pop Pop, Brayden, Brylee and Brealyn Wieding; mother, Marie Wieding; sisters, Bertha Krueger and husband Allen, Connie Sill and husband Louis, Debbie Rohde and partner, Stuart Falor, and Tammy Schulle and husband Alton; sisters-in-law, Connie Falkenberg and husband, Leroy, and Judy Schulze and husband, Val; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members, and many friends.

Visitation will begin on Friday, May 26, 2023, at 1 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church of Elm Creek followed by a funeral service at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Toby Burk officiating. On May 10, 2023, Prof. George E. Dix passed away of natural causes. He is survived by his loving wife, Dahlia Marie Gutierrez-Dix of Austin, TX.

He is also survived by two sons: George Dix of Tupelo, MS. and Edward Dix of Raleigh N.C.; a sister, Jennifer Dix Burkholder (Regan) of Santa Fe, N.M.; and a brother, John Dix (Carolyn) of Telluride CO.

Prof. Dix was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School in Madison WI, where he was a distinguished student, graduating first in his class. Afterward, he clerked for two Federal Judges on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in Alabama. Upon completing his clerkships, he went on the teach at Washington University School of Law in St. Louis MO. Subsequently, he was lured away from St. Louis to become a “founding faculty member” of the Sandra Day O’Connor School of Law at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. He worked diligently at Arizona State to assure a level of excellence in legal studies for the students. In 1971 he was lured away again by Dean W. Page Keeton of the University of Texas Law School to help establish one of the most prestigious law schools; particularly in the area of Criminal Law. Prof. Dix taught at U.T. Law School for 48 years and was passionate about each year. He loved teaching and found great pleasure in getting to know his students and in encouraging them in their endeavors.

In addition to his teaching duties, Prof. Dix distinguished himself in his legal writings and research. He is the author and co-author of numerous books, periodicals, articles, and most notably his treatise in the TEXAS PRACTICE series on CRIMINAL PRACTICE AND PROCEDURE for numerous editions. He was very gratified that his writings and opinions were often cited as guidance and authority by the United States Supreme Court in their opinions concerning Texas criminal law.

He was also passionate about the rights of the mentally ill in our society and worked closely with several legislators in rewriting the Texas Mental Code. He was a lecturer on these matters with the State Bar of Texas and with specific Mental Health organizations to help educate physicians and mental health workers on the legal rights of mental health patients.

Prof. Dix devoted more than 52 years to legal education in his hope to produce the best and most ethical attorneys to serve the people of the State of Texas.

He will be remembered most by his devoted wife for his sharp wit; his gentleness; his sweet and loving manner; his wonderful hugs and kisses, and most importantly, constant support and encouragement. His accomplishments in his profession pale in comparison to the love he felt and shared in their marriage.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 26, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church, 7601 Burnet Rd., Austin, TX 78757. A reception for mourners will be held in St. Louis IX Hall immediately after the funeral mass. A graveside interment service is scheduled for May 30, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. at St. James Catholic Cemetery, Seguin, TX 78155.

In his memory, the “Prof. George E. Dix Scholarship Fund” has been established and donations to this fund should be payable to ST LOUIS CATHOLIC SCHOOL, in order to provide tuition to students in financial need. Lynda “Kay”

Myers Swope was born in Seagraves, TX on June 10, 1939. She was the second of three children born to Robert Myers and Mary Belle Myers.

Kay’s childhood was spent living on various US Army bases during the Second World War. Her family settled in Lubbock, TX after the war. She graduated from Lubbock High School and attended Texas Tech University majoring in education and business.

Kay married Sanford Swope in Lubbock, TX on November 7, 1969. Sanford was a career soldier in the US Army. Kay had two children, Robert “Scott” and Matthew Dwight. Kay and Sanford moved the family to many locations over the next several years. She lived in Germany, Holland, Italy, as well as Houston Texas, and Lawton, OK. When Sanford was in an area she could not accompany him to, she and the children lived in Lubbock. Kay loved traveling to distant locals and made friends in all the countries she visited and lived in.

She worked as a commission accountant for an insurance agency for many years. Following her retirement from business in 2003, Kay started ‘Kay’s Magic Quilting’, a long-arm machine quilting business. She owned and operated the business until she retired again in 2019. In addition to completing quilts for her customers, Kay was an accomplished quilter in her own right. One of her quilts was named Grand Champion of the Guadalupe County Fair quilt exhibit.

Kay was a skilled seamstress, an avid homemaker, an excellent cook, and a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a generous friend and held a very personal relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, brother, and sister, and one grandchild. She is survived by her husband, her two children Scott and Matthew, and four grandchildren. She is greatly loved and missed.

Memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Jim Craver officiating.

Walgreens To Pay SF $229M Over Opioid Distribution

(San Francisco, CA) -- Walgreens is set to pay San Francisco nearly 230-million-dollars to settle a case over the company’s distribution of opioids. A city attorney says San Francisco will receive the sum over the next 14 years. The Northern California city sued the pharmacy chain in 2018 over its role in the opioid epidemic. The attorney’s office said between 2014 and 2020, opioid-related overdose deaths in the city grew by nearly 500-percent.

CDC: High Of 110-Thousand Dead In 2022 From Drug Overdoses

(Atlanta, GA) -- Over 100-thousand Americans died from drug overdoses in 2022 -- the most deadly year on record. The CDC says despite that headline number, overdose deaths aren’t surging in the U.S. anymore and have leveled off. The first two years of the pandemic saw a surge in overdose deaths. Fentanyl has been a big factor in the rise of overdoses, with more than two-thirds of all 2022 deaths involving a synthetic opioid.

NE Lawmakers Pass 12 Week Abortion Ban

(Lincoln, NE) -- Nebraska lawmakers are passing a 12-week abortion ban and restricting gender-affirming healthcare for people under 19. After a vote of 33-to-15, the bill is poised to become law as Republican Governor Jim Pillen said he “looks forward to signing [it] upon final passage.” The measure would make it illegal for medical providers to perform an abortion after 12 weeks of pregnancy, with exceptions for rape, incest, and undefined “medical emergencies.” It also bans a large number of medical treatments that fall under the umbrella of gender-affirming care, including hormone treatments and puberty blockers.

FL Healthcare Providers Grapple With Anti-Trans Laws

(Tallahassee, FL) -- Many Florida medical organizations are being forced to stop providing gender-affirming care for adults. Organizations including Planned Parenthood are suspending transgender medical care to comply with a new state law that bans transition-related healthcare for minors. Despite being billed as a way to protect children, the law also places restrictions on adults and drastically reduces the number of providers allowed to treat them. The state has also failed to draft the informed consent forms needed for adults to get access to genderaffirming care.
