Limited seating still available for Civilian Response to Active Shooter Event seminar By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The threat of active shooting events making headlines across the nation has continued to keep the Seguin Police Department proactive instead of reactive. The latest shooting events which targeted two communities, one at a Wal-Mart store in El Paso and the other at a bar in Dayton, Ohio have prompted Seguin PD officials to schedule even more free Civilian Response to Active Shooter Training Seminars. Several seminars have been hosted by the Seguin PD over the last couple of years. Limited seating still remains for a seminar scheduled for Friday, Aug. 30 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Seguin Public Library. Tanya Brown, public information officer for the Seguin PD, says law enforcement officers and agencies are frequently requested by schools, businesses, and community members for direction and presentations on what they should do if confronted with an active shooter event. She says the Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) course, is designed to provide strategies, guidance, and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event. Brown says since offering these trainings, the

seminars have proven beneficial to the average person looking to be vigilant in these current threats that have been reported in a variety of locations. Brown says it's the commitment of the police department to make people not only aware but increase their chance for survival. "We want people to be prepared. It's kind of like preparing for a hurricane, a tornado or fire drill.

Hacienda Oaks Nursing & Rehab

Those studies have shown that people are surviving incidents like that because they are actually planning or preparing. So, we have a plan. When you are in school, you guys are planning for fire drills. When the fire drill bell goes off, everybody knows what to do, right? This is kind of the same. We want people to say 'okay, when you are going in to a place to shop or eat, we want you to be aware of your surroundings," said Brown.

Brown says the seminar is designed to include all the new tactics and ways of thinking should a person find themselves in a dangerous situation. "Also, when the FBI was doing these studies in the last 16 years, it was showing that people were trying to go out the same entry doors or exit doors that they were coming in to. So, if you entered Wal-Mart in the front of the store, typically people will go back to that same point of entry to exit and so in these attacks or situations like this, not always will those exits or entry doors be accessible. We have to make sure that people are aware of their surroundings so that they know another place to get out. I know back in the day, they were training that people could play dead and since then, that has changed. We don't want people to play dead. We want people to get out. Only denying access for the attacker into a room or office or building that you are in is the last choice but we want you to get out if you can," said Brown. Brown says folks who have sat in on previous seminars applaud the information that is provided. She says it's about being in control and being able to think when everything around them – in seconds -- becomes chaotic.

Local church invites families for summer night fun St. Andrew's Episcopal Church to offer free waterslide, pizza

angelpest.com 830.379.3277

“We’ll get those little devils!”

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- A local church is looking to put the finishing touches on your summer memories St. Andrew's Episcopal Church will be hosting its third and final Summer Nights event this Wednesday. Tracy Donley, the children's minister and communications specialist for St. Andrews, says this final event might just be the most fun. "So this summer has been fantastic for St. Andrew's. We have had three different events and we are trying to capture the whole joy of summer and let families come together to make some really special memories together. The first event was a movie night. The second event was campfire songs and crafts and this last event is the best one of all. It's going to be a bouncy house waterslide. It's going to be a wonderful kind of chance for families to come. We are going to eat pizza. We are going to go over to the garden and play in the water and get wet and make some more memories.

MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail I.S.G.

So it will be the last event of the summer for this series," said Donley. Donley says the water slide and night of games will no doubt help wrap up another fun summer. "What we are hoping is that you will come and bring your kids, bring your neighbors, bring your kids' friends. It's free. The whole town is invited. We are going to offer dinner and fun and really there's no reason to come," said Donley. Donley says families are encouraged to come early for dinner. Plus kids, of course, will want to bring their swimsuits and towels. "People can come to the parish hall at 5:30 p.m. We will have dinner and then around six o' clock, we'll head over to the garden on Crockett Street. We've blocked that whole little segment of Crockett Street so that the kids can run around and play and be safe," said Donley. The free event will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Andrew's Church. The church is located at 201 E. Nolte St

Texas Rangers, Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office continue investigation into Friday standoff, release more details (Guadalupe County) -- More details about Friday's standoff between a local man and the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office are now being released to the public. Sheriff's investigators say on Friday at approximately 5:45 PM, a 911 disconnect call came in to the Guadalupe County Dispatch Center from a residence in the 100 block of Agua Verde in the Las Brisas Subdivision. A deputy was dispatched to the location to conduct a welfare check on the resident and confirm if there was an emergency at the location. During the response, it was found that the address in question was the location of a previous felony assault family violence call earlier in the day where the actor was unable to be located. After a call back to the number, a sheriff's dispatcher was told that the man, identified as 41-year-old Ryan Stephens had returned to the residence and was now threatening suicide. Prior to the arrival of the deputy, Stephens again left the location and a vehicle description was provided by the complainant. The deputy who was responding to the original call located Stephen's vehicle parked in an alley in the 200 block of Las Brisas Boulevard and he and his partner approached Stephens and attempted to detain him. Due to the nature of the call and information gathered from the earlier assault call, the deputies conducted a high risk stop on the man and requested that he exit the vehicle and show his hands. Stephen's reportedly was non-compliant and refused to exit the vehicle and further resisted their efforts by locking the door to the vehicle so they could not remove him. He refused multiple commands to show his hands and exit the vehicle and a less lethal pepper gun was deployed on Stephens having little to no effect. As the first deputy attempted to deploy a second shot from the pepper gun, Stephens allegedly put the vehicle in gear and

began to take off. Stephens drove into the direction of both deputies as they attempted to retreat to a safe location away from the moving vehicle. Both deputies, fearing for their safety from the driver of the vehicle, then fired several rounds from their duty weapons as Stephens drove towards them in a dangerous manner. As he fled the location, he went through a privacy fence and then exited striking the deputies marked patrol unit due his dangerous and erratic driving. Stephens was then pursued to the residence at Agua Verde where additional deputies assisted by a Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper and Deputy Constable from Precinct 4 then set up a perimeter on the residence. The Guadalupe County Combined SWAT and Negotiations Teams were notified and responded to the location. After several hours of negotiation, Stephens exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident. He was found to have only suffered a minor injury to his hand from the initial deployment from the pepper gun. He was not struck by any of the rounds fired by the deputies. Stephens was transported to the Guadalupe Regional Medical Center where he was cleared by medical staff prior to being transported to the Guadalupe County Jail. As reported earlier, Stephens was booked for one count of Aggravated Assault Public Servant with a Deadly Weapon and Assault Fam/House Mem Impede Breath Circulation. He is being held on bonds totaling $30,000. Additional charges related to this incident are pending. Neither deputy was injured during the incident and both have been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation being conducted by the Texas Rangers and GCSO.

Seguin PD teaching people how to stay safe ACTIVE SHOOTER SEMINAR continued from page 1 "We show a lot of videos that have people that have done things -- tasks - over and over again but when they are in situations like that -- that their stress levels and their blood pressure is rising. They are not able to react the way that they should have or could have if they would have been able to play that through to their mind already and had been able to calm down a little bit and been able to take those steps to do whatever type of movement or activities that they were trying to do," said Baker. "I'll give you an example. There's a lady in one of the videos that we show that has a stroller and she's taken that child out of that stroller time and time again. There's a situation in the grocery store that she's in. Instead of pushing the baby out of the store in the stroller, she tries to take the baby out of the stroller and she can't get the clip undone. That is a task that she does daily -- probably hundreds of times during the day but this time, she could not because the stress level was so high. This is the kind of the training or information that we are giving during that seminar," said Brown. Brown says available seats in the Aug. 30 seminar are not guaranteed so individuals are asked to reserve their spot as soon as possible. The seminar is open to adults. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Sign-up for the two hour seminar is available on the Seguin Police Department's Facebook page. Brown also reminds groups or businesses that seminars can be scheduled for their own employees or members. All they have to do is contact her office at 830-386-2582. Those unable to secure a seat for Aug. 30 are also encouraged to email Brown for information on any future seminars by emailing spdpio@seguintexas.gov.

FDA Warns About Bleach Solution Products

Deadly Atlanta Legionnaires' Outbreak Biggest In Georgia History

(Washington, DC) -- The Food and Drug Administration is warning people not to drink a bleach solution promoted as a cure for autism and other ailments. Chlorine dioxide products have not been approved by the FDA. The department warns that the substances are basically the same as drinking bleach and that poses life-threatening consequences. The products are often promoted online as remedies for autism, AIDS and cancer.

(Atlanta, GA) -- That deadly Legionnaires' outbreak at an Atlanta hotel is being called the biggest in Georgia history. One person is dead and eleven other cases confirmed after stays or visits to the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel between June and July. Georgia health officials also say there are 61 probable cases. The hotel has been shut down since July 14th to undergo a thorough cleaning of its water system with no reopening date scheduled yet.

Santa Rosa Memorial Using VR For Pain Control (Santa Rosa,CA) -- Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital is becoming one of the few California medical centers to use virtual reality for pain control. It's giving children undergoing procedures and women in labor virtual reality headsets, loaded with a variety of visual and auditory experiences designed to ease anxiety and reduce the need for narcotic painkillers. The headsets developed by Los Angelesbased AppliedVR have been tested by about 250 hospitals around the world. Children's Hospital in Los Angeles cites research showing virtual reality has decreased self-reported pain and anxiety from 25 to 30-percent by shifting a patient's focus to something more pleasant or fun, ranging from beach scenes to video games.

Growing Number Of Embryos Abandoned At Fertility Clinics (Fort Myers, FL) -- Fertility clinics across the nation are struggling with a growing number of abandoned embryos. Dr. Craig Sweet, who heads a fertility clinic in Fort Myers, Florida, says one in five embryos has been left in limbo. Often it's because patients have been successful on their journeys to become parents but sometimes it's because storage fees for embryos can cost one-thousand-dollars a year. Dr. Sweet says abandoned embryos pose ethical questions for the more than five-hundred fertility clinics in the U.S. because embryos are fertilized eggs and have a potential for life.
