Have you completed your park survey?
City seeking grant funds for sidewalks
Parks and Recreation Department hoping to reach at least 1,000 park surveys some things that we need as we go forward as we become a bigger city," said Jones. The city launched the survey at the end of August and has been really working hard to get people to fill out the 20 question survey. He says they want to know what you miss seeing at the parks, whether there needs to be more leagues, whether there needs to be more facilities for sports, recreation or even the arts and also what special events you would like to see hosted at the various parks.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Are you among the 889 people who have already filled out their park survey? If you answered yes, then the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department wants to thank you. But if not, it says there is still plenty of time to help the city reach its goal of 1,000 surveys and all while sharing your thoughts and ideas for facilities, programs and other opportunities that you would like
to see in Seguin.Jack Jones, says the deadline is nearing for folks to take part in the special online survey seeking ideas for the city's park master plan. He says in order to secure any and all future plans, the ideas need to be put on the table today. "As the park's director, I hear what we don't have. I hear a lot of the good things about what we do have but I hear the things we don't have and so we are hearing some of that. In the feedback already is
"What I've been seeing is I think people are excited about the future of Seguin Parks and Recreation. I think they see that we have come a long way especially since the 2013 parks and recreation bond election. That was a big investment into the quality of life of folks living here in Seguin. But I think that gets folks excited about 'okay, what can we do next?' We've got over the next 10 years, 20,000 more people moving here so how do we take care of those folks coming in? They are probably all coming in from other cities and bigger cities and they have all these recreational opportunities and park opportunities and of course, we have a lot of parks here and folks are taking advantage of our parks but we don't have a whole lot of recreational opportunities as far as within my department for like classes and programs so bigger cities have those kinds of activities -- rec centers, indoor natatoriums and it seems like that as you grow in population, that is what folks are going to expect as we get bigger," said Jones. Put our experience to work for you.
(Seguin) -- The city of Seguin is looking for more ways to enhance the pedestrian mobility experience in downtown Seguin. The city's Main Street program is seeking a $350,000 grant that would be used to make sidewalk improvements in the downtown historic district. Main Street Director Kyle Kramm says the city has made a commitment over the last several years to improve the condition of sidewalks and crosswalks in the downtown area. "We are working on a grant application right now for the Texas Department of Agriculture. It's a community development block grant, which comes through HUD to the Texas Department of Agriculture. Communities of 50,000 or less can apply for these grants to address infrastructure and revitalization of their downtowns. We have been successful with this grant application in the past. I think this will be our third time to apply. We were awarded one in 2016, that we used to address some sidewalk needs on the south side of the downtown district," said Kramm. See GRANT, page 2

City encouraging as many people as possible to complete park survey SURVEY, continued from page 1 In June 2019, the Seguin City Council unanimously approved the selection of Stantec Consulting Services, Inc. to develop the Parks, Recreation, Trails and Open Spaces Master Plan Update for the City of Seguin.

“We’ll get those little devils!”
MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail A.T.M

Since then, Stantec staff has worked closely with the parks and recreation department to roll out this survey in hopes of reaching as many people as possible. Individuals of all ages are encouraged to find the time to take the survey. Teens are especially encouraged to give their input as many of these projects would reportedly come to fruition as they become young adults or even maybe the parents of young children. Jones says by establishing these future plans, it allows the city to move forward with the process of then finding the money whether it be a bond issue, grant or some other type of available funding. "I tell people all the time that there is not money out there right now for future park improvements but this master plan is going to guide us to that money. It's going to help us with strategies to implement some of the bigger things that may come out of this plan,' said Jones.

He says while the city is looking to reach that 1,000 goal for surveys, having even more would really affirm its decision on where to go next.
Jones says Park West and the Splash
"It's very important. Without knowing what majority of folks want then we don't have any idea of where to go from here. So this 20 question survey is very important to tell us what you

want to see in our parks system going forward but also I will tell people that if you don't tell us, then we are not going to know. I'll go back to the 2005 parks master plan that was updated in 2008 and it took 10 years to get Park West so you have to be patients and the master plan back then laid out a park on the west side of town, Park West and it took some time to get there but you have to have that plan together so you can know what folks want so we can accomplish it over the next 10 years," said Jones.
Again, in a city of 30,000 people, Jones says the 1,000 plus goal for completed surveys would be perfect. A link to the survey can be found on the KWED/Seguin Daily News and the Seguin Parks and Recreation Facebook pages. Individuals can also use a mobile device to scan a QR Code on the 2019 Parks Master Plan webpage found on the city's website at:

GRANT, continued from page 1 Kramm says they want to further expand these types of improvements throughout the downtown, and he says these grants go a long way towards helping complete those goals. "This grant application, we're looking to address sidewalks along the 200 block of East Court Street, where there are currently no ADA ramps, and the cross-slopes of the sidewalks do not meet ADA requirements. We are also looking at the 100 block of North River (Street), where we have several businesses whose entry ways are not ADA compliant and, also again, cross-slopes not meeting ADA compliance as well. There's cracked sidewalks and things like that. And then, we are also looking at

(the) 100 (block of) West Gonzales and 100 North Camp Street, and then also at the intersection of Court and Travis streets. There are some ramps there that are extremely steep, and are pretty dangerous for people in wheelchairs," said Kramm. Sidewalks may not seem like big news, but Kramm says it really is when you think about how important pedestrian mobility is for an area like downtown Seguin. He says it makes the area more accessible, which means that more people will want to visit the historic district. "We really want everyone to feel invited into downtown. That means anybody with a mobility issue, we want to make sure that they feel like they are welcome in downtown Seguin. So this helps with
that (issue). In addition (to the other work), we will also include some curb extensions at the corners of some of these streets, so that it will lessen the amount of time a pedestrian has to be in a crosswalk, which makes it a little safer as well for everybody. And we'll probably be including some tree wells in the curb extensions as well, so that will help provide some shade to our downtown visitors. It will just make downtown a little more attractive as well," said Kramm. It would be a $350,000 grant, which would require a 20 percent match from the city. So the total project would be approximately $420,000. The application to the state is due on Oct. 1 and Kramm says they hope to know if the grant is awarded in the winter or early spring.

TLU's Nathan Haley wins McMurry Rockwind Links Intercollegiate in playoff The Bulldogs finished with a team total of 603, four shots behind second-place Hardin-Simmons and three in front of Schreiner.
(Hobbs. N.B.) - Texas Lutheran senior Nathan Haley won the McMurry Rockwind Links Intercollegiate on the first playoff hole and propelled the Bulldogs to a third-place team finish.
McMurry won its second straight tournament of the fall.
Monday at Rockwind Community Links, Haley overcame a first-round deficit of two shots to McMurry's Elliot Bourke.
The War Hawks, champions of TLU's Bohmann Memorial last week, won their own tournament by 18 shots over HSU.
Haley posted a 2-under-par 70 in the final round, and Bourke closed with an even-par round of 72.
McMurry posted a 289 on Sunday and a 292 on Monday.
Bourke was the overnight leader after a 3-under 69 on Sunday.
After McMurry, HSU, TLU and Schreiner, team places of fifth, sixth and seventh went to University of Dallas, University of the Southwest (N.M.), and East Texas Baptist.
Haley opened with a 1-under 71 in the first round. Haley's victory was his first at the collegiate level. The four-year letterman was 10th at last week's John Bohmann Memorial Invitational, hosted by TLU at Seguin's Max Starcke Park Municipal Golf Course.
TLU's McArthur tied for seventh, and Skaar tied for 23rd. Carter and Chase Maus tied for 34th and 37th, respectively. Peyton Campas tied for 49th.
Haley's score of 2-under Monday combined with Matthew McArthur's 74 and a pair of 76s (from Evan Skaar and The Bulldogs' next tournament is the Cameron Carter) to push TLU up two LeTourneau Tempest Intercollegiate, spots in the team standings, from fifth set for Oct. 7-8 at Tempest Golf Club in to third. TLU seniors Nathan Haley and Summer Swift each captured individual championships at the McMurry Rockwind Gladewater, Texas. Links Intercollegiate in Hobbs, New Mexico this week.
Summer Swift captures individual championship at McMurry Rockwind Links Intercollegiate (Hobbs, N.M.) - Texas Lutheran senior Summer Swift (Fentress/San Marcos) captured the individual championship Monday at the 2019 McMurry Rockwind Links Intercollegiate. Swift won medalist honors with a two-day total of 148. She shot a first-round 76 and trailed by six shots entering the final round. On Monday, Swift fired an even-par 72 and won the tournament by five shots over Madison Goldberg of McMurry University.
For Swift, the tournament title was the third individual championship of her collegiate career. She won the 2018 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship, the 2019 Centenary College Hal Sutton Invite in the spring, and now the Rockwind Links title.
TLU finished in a tie for sixth in the team standings. The Bulldogs shot a 360 on Sunday and a 359 on Monday. Kaley Martin tied for 21st, and Samantha De La Rosa and Bernadette Barringer finished in 45th and 47th.
Swift tied for the TLU Lady Bulldog Fall Classic title at the end of regulation last Tuesday and was declared the runner-up after a scorecard playoff.
Southwestern won the team championship. The Pirates were followed by Hardin-Simmons, Mary Hardin-Baylor, East Texas Baptist, McMurry, TLU and Schreiner, Howard Payne, and University of Dallas.

New York Becomes First State To Ban Flavored Vaping Products
already announced last week a plan to crack down on vaping and ban flavored e-cigs. Scientists Create Flu Patch Vaccine
(New York, NY) -- New York is banning the sale of flavored e-cigarettes and vaping products, becoming the first state to do so. The state's Public Health and Health Planning Council voted yesterday to enact the ban, which takes place immediately and outlaws the sale of all vaping products, other than tobacco and menthol flavors. Federal officials are currently investigating the issue, as a number of health problems have been potentially linked to e-cigarettes. That said, vaping advocates and shop owners maintain the products help people quit cigarettes, and they say health problems come from black market products which are completely unregulated.
(Rochester, NY) -- There could soon be a new way to fight the flu without getting a shot. Researchers at the University of Rochester have created a patch that sticks on the skin. They tested it on mice and say it worked. More testing is needed to figure out other things such as how long the flu patch should stay on. If successful, this could be a breakthrough in vaccinating a lot of people quickly and cheaply.
Seventh Vaping Death Reported In Nation
(Los Angeles, CA) -- The Drug Enforcement Administration served inspection warrants at several Kaiser Permanente pharmacies in Southern California and Oregon. Multiple reports indicate the feds are taking a look at facilities in Riverside, Victorville, Woodland Hills and Portland. The DEA is not commenting on the exact nature of the inspections. However, a spokesman tells KTLA that they are checking on the administration of controlled substances. In a statement, the hospital chain says they are fully cooperating.
(Tulare County, CA) -- A seventh person is dead from vaping. The man had a lung illness related to e-cigarettes. He's the second death in California. The others are in Kansas, Indiana, Minnesota, Illinois and Oregon. The CDC is also investigating 380 cases across 36 states. They've advised people to stop vaping until they determine the safety of e-cigarettes. The Trump administration
