Jack-O-Lantern Scavenger Hunt, coloring contest now underway

Seguin Today Magazine features great way to win prizes

(Seguin) -- Scarecrows and skeletons aren’t the only things taking over downtown. The KWED, Seguin Daily News Jack-O-Lantern Scavenger Hunt is now underway. Seguin Today magazine readers are invited to grab a copy of our October issue, and join our scavenger hunt, which will take them to local Seguin businesses for the chance to win a $100 visa gift card.

KWED Sales Manager Nick Spence says the team here at KWED thought it’d be fun to do something that gets the community involved during Halloween.

“The scavenger hunt was a way to get people out and about, checking out local businesses they might not usually visit. You know, it’s just a way to have fun around town with family and friends,” said Spence.

The best part according to Spence is that the contest is really easy to enter.

“All you have to do is grab a copy of our Seguin Today Magazine, which you can pick up around town including the KWED office.

Woman killed in car crash

(Seguin) – An Austin woman was killed following a vehicle accident on State Highway 123 Bypass near Seguin High School.

Lt. Mike McCann of the Seguin Police Department says the accident occurred just before 2 p.m. Saturday in the intersection of the 1300 block of East Cedar Street and the 1100 block of North Highway 123.

McCann says preliminary investigation shows that a 2018 BMW was traveling southbound on 123 when it reportedly struck the driver side of a 2022 Honda Pilot that was heading east on Cedar. Preliminary investigation also shows that the BMW had the green light when the Honda made its way into the intersection on a reported red light – causing the Honda to rollover and come to rest on its roof.

Killed was the driver of the Honda. The victim is identified as Martha Cruz, 59, of Austin.

The two occupants of the BMW along with a passenger in the Honda were all reportedly treated on

Scavenger Hunt, continued.

Inside, one of the pages will have a list of the businesses that are participating along with pictures of 12 different Jack-O-Lanterns. All you do is take the magazine with you and visit the 12 businesses listed, find the matching Jack-OLantern, write down what Jack-O-Lantern went with which business, and then fill out the form. Once you’re done, you can drop it off or mail it to us at KWED—609 E. Court Street in Seguin—and you’ll be entered to win a $100 Visa Gift Card. Just make sure to get it in by October 30th,” said Spence.

Spence says the whole idea, of course, is that the contest

the scene and released by Seguin EMS.

McCann says this accident has prompted the Seguin Police Department to again warn drivers about the responsibilities of being behind the wheel.

“Please make sure you are avoiding distractions when you are driving. Stay focused on the roads. Don’t let your phones or radios distract you from the number one purpose of being behind the wheel and that is safety and getting to where you want to go. Please make sure that we all wear our seatbelts, so we stay safe and get home to our loved ones. Be cautious when you are approaching intersections. A vast majority of accidents do happen at intersections. So, if we would just slow down before we approach an intersection, look both ways even if we have a green light. Look both ways for other vehicles that might be entering the intersection, and we can avoid an accident,” said McCann.

McCann says a full investigation including a reconstruction of the accident is still currently underway.

is a scavenger hunt so locating that pumpkin at one of those businesses might be a bit challenging.

“Sometimes, the Jack-O-Lantern is right there for you to see, maybe on the front counter. Others might be a little more challenging or hidden like on a shelf or tucked away in the corner. If you can’t find it, feel free to ask someone working there—they’ll be happy to point you in the right direction. This wasn’t meant to be a move everything around and dig for it type of hunt. It’s just something to have fun with. Just show up to the business and look for it, if you can’t find it just ask and they will point you in the right direction,” said Spence.

Scavenger Hunt, continued.

In the spirit of fall and the Halloween season, Spence encourages folks to come out and be a part of the fun.

“Honestly, this is just meant to be fun! It’s for all ages, and there’s no rush—you don’t have to do it all in one day. All the businesses are located within Seguin, so you won’t need to travel far. It’s a great way to get into the Halloween spirit, visit some new places, and maybe even win a $100 Visa Gift Card. So, take your time, it doesn’t need to all be done in one day. There are 12 locations in total so figure out your route and make things happen. Enjoy yourself, and bring friends or family along for the ride, and feel free to do some shopping while you’re visiting these locations,” said Spence.

In addition to the scavenger hunt, both children and adults are being treated to yet another fun way to win in this month’s edition of the Seguin Today Magazine. A Halloween coloring sheet can be found in the October

issue. The only rules are to color and submit the page for a chance to win one of several $25 Walmart gift cards.

Spence says not only does he look forward to people winning but hopefully, these contests serve as yet another great way to pair residents with all the great and fascinating businesses around town.

“Just that this is really about supporting and connecting with our local businesses. These places are excited to welcome people in, and it’s a great chance to explore Seguin, whether you’ve been here forever or you’re new to town. Plus, it’s something the whole family can enjoy, and who knows— you might discover a new favorite spot in the process, the diamond in the rough you didn’t know existed. Good luck to everyone and happy hunting,” said Spence.

You can grab your copy of Seguin Today around town or at our KWED office located at 609 E. Court Street. All scavenger hunt entries must be turned in at KWED by October 30 to participate.

Seguin boys force play-in game; Marion

Texas Lutheran Earns 43-34 Victory Over Austin College

SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran football team (4-1, 3-1 SCAC) used big plays in all three phases to earn a 43-34 victory over Austin College (0-5, 0-3 SCAC) at Bulldog Stadium on Saturday.

With the win, Texas Lutheran is off to its best start through five games since 2019’s 4-1 start and for the first time since 2018 Texas Lutheran has scored 40+ points in consecutive games. With the loss, Austin College’s losing streak extends to twelve straight games.

Junior running back Weston Guzman (McAllen/McAllen) set a new career-high with 161 yards rushing and a career-high three touchdowns. This is his second 100-yard game this season on the ground and he currently leads the SCAC with seven rushing touchdowns this season. Guzman averaged 9.1 yards per carry anchored by a 61-yard rushing touchdown. Kibreante Williams (Victoria/Victoria West) ran ten times for 38 yards. Caleb Camarillo (San Antonio/Southside) had a 33-yard rush on his lone attempt in addition to 39 yards receiving on three catches.

Quarterback Caden Bosanko (San Antonio/East Central) finished 21-of-35 for 196 yards and a 35-yard passing touchdown to Lavonta Henry (San Antonio/Madison) while adding 23 yards on the ground. Henry led the team with 45 yards on two receptions while Guzman had a team-high five catches for 27 yards.

On special teams, kicker Joaquin Rodriguez made three field goals from 26, 40, and 37 yards in addition to four extra points to account for 13 points on Saturday. This is the second time in his career he’s made at least three field goals in a game after making four last October against Howard Payne. Eugene Robinson IV (Lake Charles, LA/Fort Bend Hightower) made history on Saturday as he had two returns for 127 yards including a 102-yard kick return touchdown. The return is the longest in TLU program history as well as SCAC history and the first return touchdown in Robinson’s career. The record was previously held by Casey Davis who returned a kick 97 yards against East Texas Baptist in 2012. Punter Cameron Welch (New Braunfels/Canyon) showed why he is one of the best punters in the country, averaging 50.7 yards on three punts on Saturday including a 63-yard long.

Seniors Mason Hardy (Flynn/Normangee) and Tristan Smith (New Braunfels/Canyon) along with sophomore Sean Blanks

(Angleton/Angleton) led Texas Lutheran with five tackles each. Troy Tomaselli (San Antonio/Cornerstone Christian), Grayson Kowalski (Sabinal/Sabinal), and DJ Lewis (Brookshire/Brazos) all finished with four stops.

Texas Lutheran’s offense had 24 first downs, 262 yards rushing, 196 yards passing and 458 yards of total offense.

Austin College started the scoring after a busted coverage from TLU led to a 66-yard touchdown pass from the ‘Roos. TLU would rattle off 22 unanswered points across the second and third quarters to take a 22-7 lead. A 26-yard Rodriguez field goal would get the Bulldogs on the board before a 61-yard rushing touchdown would give the Bulldogs a 9-7 lead. Two more Rodriguez field goals would push the Bulldogs lead to 15-7 before a 35-yard connection from Bosanko to Henry extended the lead to 22-7 in the third quarter.

Another busted coverage led to the ‘Roos second score of the game as a 90-yard connection shrunk the Bulldogs lead to 22-14 before the Bulldogs would immediately respond with a 102-yard kick return for a touchdown to restore the lead at 29-14. The ‘Roos would not go away as they connected for yet another passing touchdown as the score moved to 29-21 early in whatw would be a high-scoring fourth quarter.

Back-to-back Texas Lutheran drives would lead to Weston Guzman finding pay dirt as the Bulldogs pulled away 43-21. Austin College would score twice in the final two minutes to bring the game to its final score of 43-34.

Up next, Texas Lutheran will have a bye week before beginning the second round of the double round robin format of the SCAC with a rematch with the ‘Roos on the road in Sherman on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 1 PM. All streaming and live stats links can be found on tlubulldogs. com.

DEA Warns Of Illegal Online Pharmacies Selling Pills With Meth, Fentanyl

(Undated) -- Officials are warning of illegal online pharmacies selling counterfeit pills made with fentanyl and meth. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration issued a public safety alert on Friday, saying there’s been an increase in illegal online, often foreign-based websites that are targeting Americans. The DEA says it has found websites in the Dominican Republic and India that have been working with drug traffickers but claim to be legitimate, based in the U.S. or approved by the FDA. A warning was also issued by the CDC this week about a “potential public health risk” from ordering what appears to be prescription medications from online pharmacies.

North Carolina health officials say they’ve bought large amounts of Benadryl and EpiPens to help those who have been stung by swarms of bees or may be allergic. The medications will be distributed through health care providers, hospitals and emergency services.

Exemptions went up in 40 states and Washington, DC, and 14 states had exemption rates over five-percent. Most states allow for religious exemptions and a few permit exemptions based on non-religious personal reasons.
