Local library invites you to join it for a discussion on race By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

Jr., chief of board of governance and leadership for the Leadership ISD in Forth and Rashad Tolbert, TLU student and president of TLU’s Black Student Union.

(Seguin) --- Limited seating is still available for this weekend’s panel discussion on race. The Seguin Public Library is helping the Seguin community begin a conversation on the issue as part of its latest book study featuring ljeoma Oluo’s book “So You Want to Talk About Race.

Gross reminds residents that while they don’t need to have the book completely read by Saturday, they should pick up their free copy at as soon as possible.

Library Director Jacki Gross says this Saturday’s Seguin Talks About Race Panel Discussion is the first in a series of events designed to engage the public in a much needed and important conversation. “We have a variety of programs planned both virtual and on-site to encourage people even if they don’t want to go to the panel discussion to maybe pick up a book and join the book discussion specifically on the book if they feel so inclined or start a conversation with their peers and see where that goes. It does not have to be here at the library or a library sponsored event. We felt like the library was a place where people – we don’t have any agenda —we don’t have a political agenda or anything like that,” said Gross. Gross, as reported earlier by the Seguin Daily News, says sitting down to talk about race is “unchartered territory” for communities especially here in Seguin. She says because it is a “hard conversation” to have, she felt Seguin through its library needed to take the first step.

“We are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. You don’t need a library card to pick up a book. You just come in and pick up a book and we have some fliers for all of the events coming up. We are requiring that people register for it if they want to attend the panel discussion because we want to ensure the safety of everyone. So, we are limiting the number of people who can be physically present. But, we will live streaming the discussion,” said Gross. ‘The book is entitled ‘So You Want to Talk About Race’ but to be honest, it’s not just about race. It’s about people who are different religions but it’s all about let’s hear each other’s stories and we might not agree but let’s respect one another and respect their experience, your experience living in Seguin is not the same as mine and it can be a good thing,” said Gross.

Those serving as panelists this weekend include Dr. Bernadette Buchanan, a professor at Texas Lutheran University; Rev. Megan Elliott, a member of the LGBT community and head pastor at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church; Rev. Jimmie Flakes, head pastor at Second Baptist Church of Seguin; Jacinto Ramos,

The Seguin Talks About Race Panel Discussion is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at the library located on West Nolte Street. Sign-up for the in-person event is required at EventBrite. That link can be found on the Seguin Public Library’s Facebook page. Access to live streaming on Saturday can also be found on that page.

The game can be heard live on Seguin Radio KWED or at SeguinToday.com. Pre-game coverage gets underway at 6:50 p.m. followed by kick-off at 7:30 p.m. Photo courtesy

Local children invited to Saturday drive through event in downtown Seguin

Kids Day in the Park finds alternative to cancelling annual event By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – This weekend will still be all about the kids. Each year, Kids Day in the Park celebrates Seguin’s youngest citizens in downtown Seguin with a day full of fun, games, and information on services available to local families. This year, however, due to the pandemic, the event hosted by Connections Individual and Family Services, will be a drive-thru

celebration. Connections is a non-profit organization which works to provide a safe and secure alternative to the “streets” for homeless, abused or at-risk youth. Megan Dupree, the outreach administrator at Connections, says the group is grateful that it didn’t have to cancel the event entirely.

“We decided that we weren’t going to be able to do Kids Day in the Park like we normally have. This would be our 12th year to host Kids Day in the Park in Seguin and we decided that just because of the pandemic, it really didn’t mean that our families didn’t need us and so we still wanted to reach out to them and be able to connect with them in some way and so we planned a

drive through event where families can drive through the streets that will be closed off around Central Park and pick up items, goodie bags. We have a limited supply of mini pumpkins to give out. We also distributed a coloring sheet to all of the schools just like we normally do and they’ll get a special treat as well if they bring these coloring sheets back to us at the park that day. The goodie bags will be filled with all kinds of items, treats, coupons, books, activity packs, information from different businesses and non-profits in Seguin, tooth brushes, tooth paste just anything we felt would benefit families,” said Dupree. Dupree says in addition to all the fun for the kids, the day is also about ensuring that families know of the services available to them. “I think for this year, we really just wanted people to know that we are still here. We know that this year has been rough on a lot of our families, a lot

of youth in our community and we are still here and we are still availe to help. So, one of the biggest things that connections does is offer counseling at no or low cost to families in the communities that we serve and that’s never been more important than it is right now. So, our counselors are ready to help youth, ready to help families kind of work through this hard time. That’s kind of the main goal for this event is just letting people know that were are still here and other non-profits around the community are still here ready to help families,” said Dupree.

The Kids Day in the Park Drive Thru event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Seguin’s Central Park. Bags will be distributed while supplies last. Vehicles are asked to enter the drive through by turning onto South River Street from Court Street. We hope to see all the families of Seguin there! Seguin Police Department to lead this year’s holiday parade By Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- The men and women of the Seguin Police Department will be honored during this year’s Holiday Lighted Parade. Mayor Don Keil announced recently that he had selected the officers to be recognized as this year’s grand marshals for the popular Christmastime parade. Keil says he has such great respect for Police Chief Terry Nichols and for the rest of the department. He says he’s seen first hand how they are making a positive difference for the people of Seguin. “Through the past few weeks, I’ve seen so much of Chief Nichols and doing things and seeing his operations throughout the community as well as his command staff which is an amazing group of guys too, a very skilled group of people. So, it kind of put it into head to me that every year, it’s my duty to name a marshal for our Holiday Stroll Parade and so, I took it upon myself to appoint I think the Seguin Police

Department headed by Chief Nichols as the official marshals of whatever forum our celebration will take – whether it’s a standing display or some sort of celebration but one way or the other, I want this to be a reminder to this community of what a great, professional, well run police department that we have,” said Keil. Mayor Keil says a number of law enforcement agencies have been in the news of late, and not always in a positive light. But Keil said he wanted to show his support for the work done by the Seguin PD each day. “I just want them to know that this community supports them and will do all that it can to help them keep this a safe community. I’m going to encourage people through the holiday season, if they can, maybe even make it some sort of theme to honor these guys that keep us all safe in this community,” said Keil. The officers will be honored as part of the city’s holiday parade, but Mayor Keil

says that he hopes the community will come together during this time to show its thanks for the officers who serve and protect this community. “Throughout the country, there are places that are really having a hard time respecting police and I really want to make sure that our police force, Chief Nichols knows that this community knows them, supports them and will do all that we can to make sure that this a wonderful, peaceful community and the police department is a big, big part of that,” said Keil. The Lighted Holiday Parade is usually held the first week of December in downtown Seguin. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s not clear how the parade will look this year. The city is currently exploring a number of options, and expects to make an official decision on the parade in mid-November.
