to host barbecue SOLC to host Pumpkins on GVCCC chicken sale this Sunday Pikes Drive Thru event Proceeds to benefit counseling sessions for local residents

(Seguin) -- A crop of lighted pumpkins will be returning to the fields over at the Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center. The third annual Pumpkins on Pikes will be hosted as a drive thruevent giving families the chance to admire the lighted hand-carved pumpkins from the safety of their vehicles. SOLC officials say before they are displayed on top of pikes throughout the property, the pumpkins will judged. They say unlike past years, there is no pre registration and participants will have a couple of options in which to submit their pumpkin entry. Either they can

stop by and carve on site prior to judging or they can bring an already carved pumpkin with them. Cost is $20 to enter the contest. The top winners of the contest will be awarded several great prizes courtesy of the SOLC. Contest participants can arrive to carve and display their pumpkins as early at 5:15 p.m. It will be followed by judging at 7 p.m. and the start of the drivethru at 7:15 p.m. Cost for those just wishing to drive-thru the lighted pumpkin path is $10 a vehicle. (Seguin) -- Although the Guadalupe Valley Christian Counseling Center’s annual fundraiser will look a bit different this year, its tasty entree will still be the same. That’s according to Sean Hanon, the new executive director for the non-profit organization. Hanon says the group is preparing for its Sunday BBQ from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church. Now due to COVID-19, Hanon says Sunday’s fundraiser will strictly be drive through and will only include chicken. “Again, people who are accustomed to our fundraiser and the meal that we do, we are doing that a little different too because we are going to all drive-thru. What we are going to do is just a half a barbecue chicken. We are not going to do the sides this year and I hope that nobody is going to boycott us just for that reason but we just had to decide that because of the drive-through – doing an entirely drive through operation, we needed to streamline a little bit. So, we are doing half a barbecue chicken. It’s going to be a fantastic barbecue chicken. We are all going to get together and we are all going to cook it. We have a great team

that cooks it and prepares it and packages it up and gets it ready to go. We are going to do that on Saturday and then on Sunday, Oct. 25, you can come and get your half barbecue chicken,” said Hanon. Hanon says each year, the group relies on the BBQ Chicken Fundraiser to help cover the operating expenses that go into providing counseling services to local residents. “Guadalupe Valley Christian Counseling Center is an ecumenical program that is supported by very many area churches. They are all represented on the board of directors and help us figure out the outreach that we want to do and help us stay afloat and help us do this fundraiser and what we do is we provide counseling opportunities for people regardless of their ability to pay. We work on a sliding scale. Normally, we have a very robust internship program. Again, with COVID, the internship program got a little bit suspended, but we are starting it back up as of this week as a matter of fact. We are going to have a whole lot more opportunities for lower income folks and those kinds of things because of our internship program and of course, we have engagements with all kinds of organizations—with NAMI of Guadalupe County and the United Way who also helps keep us supported,” said Hanon. where you can turn left or turn right as the exit,” said Cave.

(Seguin) -- A local church is giving kids a chance to put on their costumes a few days early. Faith Lutheran Church is inviting local children to its annual Drive Through Trunk or Treat this Sunday. Andrew Cave, the director of youth and children education, says the church has carefully planned out the event and is ready to help families enjoy some Halloween fun. “We just feel called to do this event kind of an outreach to the community and just to bring families together and we are doing it as a drive-thru for safety reasons with COVID and we are doing all sorts of measures like temperature checks, wearing gloves. We will be using cups to be handy out the candy. We are doing everything we can to make it safe but to also let the kids just come and have a great time and just have a nice family event where families can come together,” said Cave.

Cave says this will be the third year that the church will host the event and hopes that even more families will come out to receive treats from its members.

Cave says volunteers will be on hand to help navigate families through a safe and smooth car line.

“We have two different entrances. We have the one by the preschool and then the one close to the Baptist Church. The one by the pre-school is the one that we are using where they can enter on Cedar Street. I’m sure there will be a backup on Cedar Street a little but they are going to enter in on the pre-school entrance and there’s going to be cars on the sides and there will be an outline and traffic control where they will direct the cars and then they go left by our activity center building, go The drive through trunk or treat will be held around and then they are going to go around under the pre- from 4 to 6 p.m. The church is located at 1326 school awning all the way out and then there’s a back alleyway E. Cedar St. Again, entrance will be on Cedar.

Teatro to host drive-in concert

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- It’s Viva Seguin time! Limited tickets still remain for this weekend’s Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin’s Viva Seguin! Conjunto Festival. The drivein experience is scheduled for Saturday night on the grounds of Teatro’s Cultural Arts Center. From the comforts and safety of their vehicles, families are invited out to experience the sounds of headliner Santiago Jimenez Jr. Jimenez, the son of legendary accordion player, Don Santiago Jimenez, is known for his own musical style having recorded over 700 songs in over 100 albums. Prior to him taking the stage, Seguin’s own Conjunto Cats will deliver what some describe as a “powerhouse ensemble.” The band consists of Bandleader Art Campos, his two sons, Zeke and Diego Campos and fourth and final group member Nathan Alzalde. Teatro’s Executive Director Yvonne De La Rosa says the drive-in concert is an extension of Teatro’s

mission which is to provide a better understanding of the Mexican-American culture through the study, teaching, practice and performance of the arts. “And knowing through this pandemic and how things have happened, our artists are suffering and so all we wanted to do was make sure that we had a venue and a space for them to be able to practice their craft for people to enjoy their music and to have a space that was safe for this to happen instead of inside of a building,” said De La Rosa.

revive the space where live music used to occur many years ago,” said De La Rosa. During the concert, the group will also pay special tribute to Rodolfo Lopez, longtime Teatro Conjunto Juan Seguin instructor and Texas Commission on the Arts artist in residence. Lopez is recognized for starting the Conjunto Juan Seguin Music Program in 1997.

De La Rosa says what also makes the whole experience unique is the site for the concert. She says the grounds at the art center are also known as the historic Plataforma.

Tickets are $50 per vehicle with a max capacity of six people per vehicle. Tickets can be purchased at vivaseguin.eventbrite.com. The grounds will open at 5 p.m. Saturday followed by the concert from 6 to 10 p.m. The cultural arts center is located at 921 W. New Braunfels St. No walk ups or trailers will be allowed.

“If you don’t know much about the historic Plataforma, this is where the Mexican-American people would gather to hold their fiestas, to have concerts and to be amongst the community and so we felt that this was the perfect venue and the perfect space to bring the community back -- although social distant but to also

This weekend’s event is being made possible thanks to the Guadalupe County United Way, Guadalupe County Community Symposium, City of Seguin, San Antonio Area Foundation, Texas Commission on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, Humanities Texas and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Annual bbq chicken sale to be different, group looks to pull in more support

BARBECUE, continued from page 1 Again, Hanon hopes changes in this year’s fundraiser don’t prevent people from coming out and supporting the counseling center. He says if there was ever a time that the group needed the community, it is this year. “This is at the beginning of October that we

have held 1,000 counseling sessions this year. We had to essentially shut down. We could do online things but that was a lot of a restriction in March and April and of course, we saw an actual increase in demand because people are going through so much. So we really want to be here for everybody that needs us. So, again that’s why this fundraiser is so critical to keep us operating

during these challenging times and keep us out here available for folks who need it,” said Hanon. The half chicken plates are $8 each. Pre-sale tickets can be purchased at Parker’s City Pharmacy. Faith Lutheran Church is located across from Seguin High School’s Matador Stadium at 1326 E. Cedar St.

Matadors host Patriots in district opener, Friday’s game to air on KWED Boerne-Champion to beat LeanderGlenn 33-13 and Medina Valley 3810 before the bye week. The school’s first two years of varsity competition produced an 8-4 record in 2018, a 9-3 mark last year, and trips to the second round of the 5A Division I playoffs in both seasons. The Patriots will attack Seguin’s defense with an option based rushing attack out of the pistol and spread formations. Junior tailback J.C. Solitaire, an AllDistrict selection in 2019, enters Friday with 419 yards (7.4 per carry) and five total touchdowns. Quarterback and classmate Alex Alva has carried the ball 24 times for 206 yards (8.6 avg.) and two scores, but he has only completed 47 percent of his passes for 119 yards and one touchdown.

loss to New Braunfels, because the bye week followed that game, and last week’s contest against KerrvilleTivy was cancelled due to COVID-19. Veterans Memorial is 2-1 in Richard Mendoza’s fifth season as head coach, the program’s third at the varsity level. The Patriots rebounded from a 35-0 loss to

“The quarterback is going to pull it, and they have designed quarterback runs, which gives them an extra hat in the backfield, so we’ve got to fit the gaps, and try to be good on first down,” Seguin head coach Travis Bush said. “They’re going to try to tempo us, and get us going with some quick plays, so we’ve got to keep them off balance, and try to get them behind the chains, and then put them in passing situations.” The Matadors look to shore up their run defense against the tandem of Solitaire and Alva after giving up 286 rushing yards and 7.7 per carry in the 35-20 loss to New Braunfels. Seguin’s statistical leaders on

that side of the ball include junior linebacker Allen Martinez (18 tackles) and sophomore defensive end Jayce Cardenas (4 TFL, 2 sacks, FF, FR). Seguin’s offense has been more diverse than Veterans Memorial’s in the early part of the season. The Matadors also feature an All-District running-back who topped 1,200 yards a year ago in Marques Washington, and he enters Friday with 204 yards (6.0 avg.) and two touchdowns in 2020. Senior quarterback Micah Rodriguez has completed a staggering 80 percent of his throws for 452 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions. Alex Concepcion (12 rec., 123 yds., 2 TD), Tristan Moreno (11 rec., 146 yds., 1 TD), and Washington (12 rec., 94 yds.) have been Rodriguez’s top targets. The Matadors face a Veterans Memorial defense anchored by All-District returnees Seth Powell-Tubig and Xavier Mitchell on the defensive line, and cornerback Simeon Woodard in the secondary. The Patriots held Medina Valley to 122 total yards and six first downs two weeks ago. Friday’s kickoff at Matador Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday. com. Pre-game starts at 6:50 with the Navarro coach’s show, followed by live coverage from the stadium at 7:00.

Familiar foes Navarro, Wimberley square off for district title, top playoff seed Memorial without playing, because the undermanned team from Austin forfeited the game.

Navarro’s last competitive game was nearly a month ago - the 21-17 comefrom-behind victory over Giddings on Sept. 25. Blount says there is no magic formula for duplicating the speed and physicality that awaits in Friday’s matchup against Wimberley. “We’ve been trying to stay as intense in practice as we possibly can over these last four weeks,” Blount said. “We knew that those practices were going to come into play down the road, but there’s not really a whole lot you can do because game speed is game speed, and being in an intense ballgame like this is the only way to get those reps. So I know the kids are focused. They’ve been training hard. It’s a big week for them no matter what, but there’s always stuff on the line when you’re playing Wimberley.” Navarro and Wimberley split two meetings in 2019, with the Panthers All-State safety Mark Wozniak is one of three Navarro defensive backs with winning 42-14 in district play, and the Texans avenging that outcome by the two interceptions this season. The Texans blew out passes for 1,859 yards, 15 touchdowns, coach, Wimberley 7-1 in Doug Warren’s eighth New Tech 88-0 and earned a win over Eastside and four interceptions.

A cast of familiar names surrounds Tippie at the skill positions, with running-backs Juan Olmedo (486 yds., 6 TD) and Moses Wray (358 yds., 5 TD), along with receivers Jaxon Watts (498 yds., 5 TD), Ty Pruett (468 yds., 5 TD) and Christian Marshall (356 yds., 3 TD) giving Wimberley multiple modes of attack. Navarro counters with a Slot-T based offense cranking out 423.4 yards per game and eight yards per carry on rushing plays. Sam Muniga leads the Panthers in rushing yards (627) and receiving yards (188) to go with nine total touchdowns. Brody Whitson has scored a team-high eight rushing touchdowns while running for 451 yards. Orlando Ortiz has found the end zone seven times. The Wimberley defense will face a more versatile version of Navarro quarterback Nick Billings in his junior season than what they remember from his sophomore campaign. Billings enters Friday with 530 yards and eight touchdowns through the air to go with 148 yards and four scores on the ground. The Navarro secondary has coralled eight interceptions this season, with All-State safety Mark Wozniak and corners Ortiz and Aden Supak each grabbing two. COVID Surges In The Midwest

(Undated) -- Deaths from COVID-19 are surging in the Midwest. Record daily increases in coronavirus deaths were reported in four Midwestern states on Wednesday. Daily records were hit in Iowa, Minnesota, Montana and Wisconsin. Wisconsin also reported a record daily increase in new cases of the virus, along with Illinois and Ohio. The coronavirus has killed more than 221-thousand people in the U.S. so far.

Ireland Begins New Lockdown Amid Rising COVID Cases

(Ireland) -- Ireland isn’t waiting for the coronavirus crisis to get worse, it just went back into lockdown. Everyone who can stay at home is urged to do so for the next six weeks. All non-essential businesses are closed and restaurants are only offering takeout. But schools will remain open. The prime minister says the restrictions are to ensure everyone can celebrate Christmas “in a meaningful way.”

31 States On White House COVID Red Zone List

(Washington, DC) -- At least 31 states are now in the red zone for coronavirus cases. A new White House task force report has added Colorado, Michigan, Ohio, Texas and West Virginia because their positivity rates exceeds ten-percent. Ohio set a record Wednesday

with 23-hundred new infections, Utah hit a new high with hospital patients and Minnesota just lost 35 more lives, the most since May. Arizona is also seeing a new surge of cases, similar to the summer spike that made it one of the world’s hardest hit hotspots.

Spain Passes One Million Confirmed Coronavirus Cases

(Spain) -- Spain is marking the grim milestone of one-million coronavirus cases. The country was slammed early in the pandemic and had one of Europe’s toughest lockdowns. Now, it’s dealing with another surge, adding nearly 17-thousand new infections Wednesday. This puts Spain as the sixth hardest hit around the world, following Argentina, Russia, Brazil and India. The U.S. remains number one with more than eight-million cases.

CDC Broadens Definition Of Coronavirus ‘Close Contact’

(Washington, DC) -- The CDC is expanding its definition of a “close contact” when it comes to coronavirus. Instead of 15 consecutive minutes within six feet, the time is being spread out. A close contact is now described as someone who was within six feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes over 24 hours. The change will most affect schools, workplaces and other locations where people gather for extended periods of time.
