Library looking for video recordings on race
Seguin Talks About Race series continues with collection of personal stories on race
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- It’s time now for the Seguin Public Library to hear your story. The local library is currently collecting personal narratives from the community regarding the issues of race, racial injustice and/or intolerance.
Library Director Jacki Gross says the recorded stories are being collected as part of the library’s month long series, “Seguin Talks About Race”. Gross says once collected, these recorded stories will be shared with not only the community but also with the Library of Congress. “The interviews they can either just submit it themselves, if they want to record it themselves and submit it to us or come here and really it is just a format for them to tell an interesting story. It doesn’t have to be negative. It can be something positive or something when
they were younger that happened. I know people when you start asking them, they start saying ‘oh, I remember when I was a kid and we had to walk to Juan Seguin School because that was the only school we could go to.’ Things like that, we are just looking for those types of stories and like I said, it doesn’t have to be a negative thing. It can be positive thing or just a remembrance. So, it’s just so that because when people tell a story, it’s easier for other people to connect with them especially people who may not have had the same experiences and so we feel like getting that out and having people tell those stories really connects the community together,” said Gross.
Gross says the library is making it easy for anyone to share their story. She says the stories are important in better understanding each other and moving forward together as a community.
“We are talking video so if they choose to do it themselves and submit to us, all that we ask is that it’s in landscape mode so that it makes it easier for us to edit and put it in the loop or they can come here. They just need to call us and we can set up a time for them to come in and we do have some questions that can prompt them or if they have a story, they can just go with it and they can record it. It somebody doesn’t want to be video recorded, it can be audio but we hope that people will want to be video recorded because that adds to the story too,” said Gross. Gross says the stories that they gather will be shown at the library on the final Saturday of the month-long program. That showing is scheduled for Nov. 14. She says those videos will also then become part of the library’s archive.
Gross again reminds the public that race is not necessarily an easy conversation to have but believes that it is a necessary one. Video recordings on race can be emailed to library@ seguintexas.gov. Those wanting to stop by and record a video are encouraged to call and make an appointment at 830-401-2422. The Seguin Talks about Race series is based on the library’s current book discussion of “So You Want to Talk About Race” by Ijeoma Oluo. A free copy of the book is now available at the local library. Books are available while supplies last. The next book discussion is slated for this Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the library. Registration is encouraged at Eventbrite.com.

Voters encouraged to bring a little help with them to the polls if needed WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM

Early voting numbers surpass those in 2016
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- As early voting continues this week, voters are reminded to not only feel but be prepared at the polls. That’s according to Lisa Hayes, the Guadalupe County Elections Administrator. Hayes says this week marks the final stretch for early voting. She says
after this week, the final votes will pour in on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3. Now, whether it’s this week or on Election Day, Hayes reminds voters that they can bring their voter guide with them. She says a voter guide is anything that helps individuals complete their ballot.
“It can be a sample ballot. It can be a sheet of notebook paper that they’ve written their choices on. It can be whatever it is they want to print out or write out their choices on -something that helps them get through the ballot more quickly -- that reminds them of who they want to vote for. We encourage the voters to go online, use our sample ballot tool, pull up their own sample ballot and use that to mark because that’s exactly what they are going to see at the polls but they don’t have to do it that way. They can come into our office and get a sample ballot or they can just, based on their own research, write down the candidates they want to vote for and bring that into the polls and that is a great tool,” said Hayes.
I don’t see any reason the voter shouldn’t take advantage of that opportunity,” said Hayes.
Often times, people are hesitant to bring in a little help with them to the polls. Others might just not know that they are welcome to do so. But with so many races on the ballot, Hayes encourages voters to do what they feel is best for them. Plus, she says by bringing in the names of those you want to support, it can help cut down on the time you spend at the voting booth.
Of course, this number shared by Hayes is already higher in that it does not include those voters who turned out on Monday. The nine early voting locations in Guadalupe County include the Seguin Elections Office, the Cibolo Fire Station Number 2, the Central Texas Technology Center in New Braunfels, Grace Church in New Braunfels, New Berlin City Hall, the Schertz Elections Office, the county’s annex building in Schertz, the Seguin ISD Administration Building and Selma City Hall. Again, voters are reminded that they can vote at any one of these locations no matter where they live throughout the county.
“It does help speed the voting process up a little bit without sacrificing accuracy. The voter then knows who they want to vote for because they’ve got it written down because there are a lot of races on the ballot and sometimes, it is difficult to remember who you wanted to vote for in each of those races. It’s an extensive ballot and so anything the voter can do to help them remember who they want to vote for in what race, I think is entirely beneficial and
Hayes says her office is more than ready for those early voters who will be coming in and casting their ballot during this final week. She says current voter turnout numbers are already proving that records will be broken. “So, our voting totals right now, in person voters, we have had 47,365 in person voters as of close of voting (Sunday) and then at that point, we also had 6,166 mail ballots received during early voting. We surpassed our early voting totals from 2016, not including mail ballots already. We surpassed that by 4,878 people,” said Hayes.
Early voting continues today and runs through Friday. Polls will be open each day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
