Local man builds basketball gym, hopes to inspire more training, love for the game
Free basketball training this Sunday for Seguin middle, high school players only By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
or we try to utilize the schools but then it’s hit and miss, ‘Oh, you can’t train today because it’s Spring Break, the gyms are closed or you can’t do this or you can’t do that and then there wasn’t any equipment. It was brought up out of necessity. The Seguin Activity Center, we talked about that. That hasn’t opened. There’s just nothing in this area for kids to get out and train, nothing like this at least” said Saengerhausen.
(McQueeney) – A local entrepreneur’s vision has turned into a slam dunk investment for all those who are passionate about the game of basketball. Just prior to the start of the pandemic, Erik Saengerhausen had just opened the doors to his new indoor basketball court training facility, The Dog House. The gym is located on Terminal Loop Road in McQueeney.
The gym is located in a gated business park giving court users the opportunity to privately train if necessary. While his vision still calls for a few big-ticket items, Saengerhausen says his court comes fully equipped and even includes the luxuries of AC and heating for yearround operation.
While safety guidelines have made it difficult to fully operate over these last several months, the ability for training, pick up games and other basketball programs have finally resurfaced this fall. The switch to cooler temperatures has also made this the perfect time to hit the court.
“It’s 3,000 square feet. It’s kind of a three-quarter court. It has two goals. I’ve got two shooting machines, box jumps, ropes, pull up bars, medicine balls. We’ve got cones. I mean just all the training stuff you need. We’ve got everything,” said Saengerhausen.
Saengerhausen says the Dog House has literally been a dream, a dream that he hopes other families will take advantage of. “The name is the Dog House and that’s just the kind of training that we want to do. It’s intense, high intense training. The vision started -- my kid plays AAU (Amateur Athletic Union). His kid plays AAU. Another buddy of ours Cody Cheetham, his son plays AAU and there’s just no where to train. We are all going to San Antonio to train

Friend and local basketball enthusiast Thomas Zuniga says he is proud of what Saengerhausen has been able to accomplish and hopes that families and teams take advantage of this local gym. See THE DOG HOUSE, page 2

“If you ask 20 plus people around Seguin that have kids in AAU and stuff like that -- like if you want to go on a Saturday and shoot basketball or a Sunday, you can’t if it’s raining or too hot, the court’s not good -- you don’t have lines. You don’t nothing to practice a free throw. You can’t practice a threepoint line, how to bounce plays. You can’t do anything outside because there is not a facility so when I was talking to Erik and I said Erik if you do this, I can help you get people in as much as I can. I work with the high school boys and the high school girls and we have their back too, the coaches there at Seguin High. We School. We are just trying to get the word out for people to come here and train,” said Zuniga.

to prepare with a team and then start games and they are learning basketball fundamentals there but here, they are getting that strength training to build up and utilize those basketball fundamentals,” said April. While there will definitely be kids on the court, Saengerhausen says The Dog House, might prove even more important for those adults in the community who also enjoy a game or two.

During its visit to The Dog House, the Seguin Daily News caught up with a few of the kids taking advantage of some of the training. Among those picking up a few extra shooting skills was Kaleb McCann, a Seguin High school senior. McCann says it’s great to have access to such a well-equipped gym right here in the Seguin area. “I feel like it’s a great place because they keep it well (maintained). They have machines that even the high school doesn’t have and the training here is next level. It’s not like other camps where it’s like 100 people and one coach. They always help you with everything,” said McCann. A basketball court, of course, does not only belong to the boys. Also excited about getting her body prepared for the game was Seguin High School Freshman Desiree Zuniga. Desiree says she’s counting on having more girls come out and train. “I think it’s good because I want to get better and being with the boys helps me push harder. Come out here and just don’t be scared to be around all the boys just play your game,” said Desiree. When it comes to training, you are also never too young to play at your best. Just ask Jefferson Elementary fourth grader Cruz Escalante who says he enjoys the training because it also includes plenty of fun. “It’s fun and it’s good to help you while you are
the parents who no longer have to drive out of town for the comforts of a good solid gym in which to train at. Cruz’s mom, April Escalante says the option of having The Dog House here is a win for her whole family who is very passionate about the game. “Strength training, I think, is an important factor, ball handling – these are practices that he doesn’t necessarily get in these other programs. These other programs you get maybe one or two weeks
on the court.
“We definitely plan on having open gym even for older guys like me. I’m an old guy and I still like to play basketball so we are going to try to get some stuff on the weekends, some three on three, four on four pickup games just kind of an open gym style. The weekends are really good for just shooting machine where you come in and spend an hour shooting and have some stuff like that as well as the hardcore training and then we do have AAU teams that will be training out of here as well but we are kind of figuring it out as we go. We don’t really have an iron clad plan. We just know that we want to get kids in here and keep the cost as low as we can. This is not a big profit center. I want to get as many kids that I can in here for the least amount of money,” said Saengerhausen. Next year’s goal will be to have 3 on 3 basketball games and tournaments bringing more of the surrounding community out to the gym. This year, The Dog House hopes to continue renting out the court to coaches by the hour and to continue its open gym days and training opportunities. Also, until further notice, COVID-19 safety guidelines such as social distancing while off the court will be followed Mask wearing will also be an option for those
This Sunday, all Seguin ISD middle school and high school basketball players (7th to 12th grades) are invited out for a free two-hour training from 3 to 5 p.m. Those interested in this weekend’s free training or who are interested in utilizing the gym are asked to call 210-439-4471. Details and directions to the gym will be provided at that time. Regular updates on the gym can also be found on its Facebook page, The Dog House.
Blue Santa applications now being accepted for the 2020 Holiday Season WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM
WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 28, 2020
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Blue Santa doesn’t want trick or treating to be the only thing on parents’ minds this week. This week also marks the start for the Seguin Police Department Blue Santa application process.
families. We had 900 children and we wrapped 2,700 gifts in three nights. So, I believe that the numbers are going to be higher than 300 families and of course more children and the gifts, we will do the best that we can. If we can’t provide them with more than two, then we will do the best that we can with what we get from the donations,” said Vasquez.
For over 30 years, the Blue Santa Program has helped to ensure that all kids find gifts under the tree on Christmas morning.
Of course, the first step for all families is to apply. Vasquez says there are several documents that families must bring with them to complete the process.
Hope Vasquez, who has served as Blue Santa’s top elf for the last several years, says the applications are now available at various locations throughout the area. She says the program helps to ensure gifts for all children in Guadalupe County age 12 and under. Vasquez says this year, the department is expecting to assist even more families.
“We have about 14 locations. They can come to either one of them and a list will be provided to you so they can look over and make arrangements because some places do require an appointment time slot. The documents that they need to bring with them is a current photo ID or a driver’s license. It does have to have a picture with name and address. I understand that some agencies might be backlogged in trying to get driver’s licenses current but they need to bring some photo I D that is current and includes the address that they are at. They need a proof of residence, contract, an apartment, a house or a lease – a proof of income or they can meet one of the requirements that we have in the application and also all children must be living with a parent. It can’t be that they are living with grandma unless that person has the guardianship or has the authority to make those decisions on those children,” said Vasquez.
‘According to the records from last year, we had 322
Vasquez says families are also reminded to provide all the most current information on their application. She says any information provided should also be updated as needed during these next two months. “We also need to have working phone numbers. Sometimes, there’s an error or a correction needs to be done on the application and the application won’t be processed unless those things get corrected and we are asking something new as well, an email address. So, if we can’t get a hold of you on your phone, we do want a working email and again, if there’s two families living in one household, only one application is acceptable because it will flag it in our system and our system only has it for one address,” said Vasquez. Vasquez says with everything going on throughout this pandemic, she felt it was important that they get a head start in the application process. “I believe that because of what we are going through right now together as a nation, as a worldwide pandemic, I feel that there is still going to be families still suffering with job loss or their income is not there to provide gifts for the children so I felt that by moving it one week early, we will start thinking of the plans for the future. I know we are not in Halloween yet and we are already thinking about Blue Santa but that’s the reason why. I want to get the word out in time because our deadline is Dec. 11, a Friday. I don’t want to miss any families out there that might be needing or hurting or they might be thinking that they will not be able to provide anything for their children during this Christmas holiday,” said Vasquez. Some of locations accepting applications include Ball Early Childhood Center, Community Council of South Central Texas, Family Life Center, the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson and Patlan Elementary Schools, the Seguin Housing Authority, the Seguijn ISD Administrative Office and the Seguin Police Department. Other countywide locations include St. Vincent de Paul in Marion and the Centro Esperanza in San Marcos. Those with specific questions regarding their family are asked to call 830-401-2386 or email bluesanta@seguintexas.gov. The deadline to apply is noon on Friday, Dec. 11.

CDC Study: Nurses At High Risk For COVID Among Health Workers
(Washington, DC) -- Health care heroes tackling coronavirus head on are most at risk of getting it themselves. A new CDC study confirms what experts have been saying since the pandemic began. The agency looked at more than 67-hundred hospitalizations across 13 states from March to May. Six percent of patients were frontline workers with a third of those being nurses or nursing assistants. About a fourth fought to survive in the ICU, with four-percent losing that battle. Researchers say this shows the need for continued infection prevention. The study comes as most of the nation is dealing with skyrocketing and record surges.
But Brad Little isn’t making masks mandatory across the state. He’s calling for people to take personal responsibility in protecting their loved ones and neighbors. Idaho isn’t alone. A curfew in El Paso, Texas is underway as hospitals overflow. Residents are told to stay home for the next two weeks from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. New Jersey’s largest city also begins a curfew Tuesday. All nonessential businesses must close by 8 p.m.
ESPN Scuttles Plans For NBA-Like Bubble For College Hoops
Texas Tops Calif For Most COVID-19 Cases
(Undated) -- ESPN is scuttling plans for a NBA-like bubble for college basketball events in Orlando. The network tells The Athletic the plans have been scrapped due to differences regarding the health and safety protocols that would be required. More than two dozen schools were scheduled to play in the events owned by ESPN. The network says the move allows teams to have enough time to make other plans. ESPN still hopes to salvage the Champions Classic and Jimmy V Classic at other locations.

The move to younger children has been approved by the FDA, but the company broke the patients up into groups of 12 to 15 and 16 to 17. The team at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital vaccinated 100 children in the younger group last week. Half of those received placebos in the third and final phase of testing.
(Undated) -- It’s not a race you want to win. New figures show Texas has eclipsed California with over 910-thousand confirmed coronavirus cases since the pandemic began. California, which led the nation for months, has reported just over 909-thousand as of the latest tally. The number of new cases in the Lone Star State has increased at a rate of 19 percent over the last two weeks. That’s also higher than California’s rate of 15 percent for the same period. (Boise, ID) -- Idaho is taking new action as coronavirus cases skyrocket. The governor reinstated some restrictions Monday that will limit gatherings and enforce masks at long-term care facilities.
