GRMC board members applaud hospital employees amid COVID-19 pandemic and daily sacrifices in ensuring that the health and wellness of patients remains the hospital’s top priorities.

By Cindy AguirreHerrera

(Seguin) -- Although the COVID-19 pandemic continues across the nation and much of the world, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center’s top governing board isn’t waiting any longer to publicly thank its hospital employees for their ongoing dedication

Those words of thanks were shared Tuesday to the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court by Dr. James Lee, GRMC’s board chairman. From the very start of the pandemic in March and through the sharp increase in COVID-19 cases that began to hit the hospital in June, Dr. Lee says GRMC has been able to continue to stand tall, meeting the demands of the community. “You

credit to the doctors, Dr. (Bhupinder) Sangha, Dr. (Juan) Arenas, Dr. (Sarah) Lester. They did a wonderful job. It was a learning process as they went along. It was like building an airplane while it’s flying. That’s the way they had to do. You have to give credit to the nurses. They worked very hard. We had traveling nurses that came in to help. Some came from New York directly and helped in our hospital. They really loved working in our hospital. The therapists did a wonderful job. All the hospital employees were involved in this and so they all did a great, great job,” said Dr. Lee. See DR LEE, page 3

New voters added to the rosters in Guadalupe County By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Guadalupe County is reporting even more first time voters for this November 3 General and Presidential Election. Guadalupe County Elections Administrator Lisa Hayes says the total of eligible voters for this election surpassed any of her own predictions. “I believe what we have that will be eligible for this election and I can only give you an approximation right now, but as of Oct. 1, it was 109,000 but I think we are close to 111,000 for the election but this year, we’ve added 13, 377 new voters,” said Hayes. Hayes says the push to drive voters to the polls was evident on Monday, Oct. 5, the final day to register to vote.

“On the voter registration deadline, we got a 1,000 applications in. Now, all of them may not have been new voters but they may have been voters who were registered but just wanted to make sure,” said Hayes. Hayes says the big ballot item which helped fuel much of the interest in this race is of course the U.S. Presidential race between Republican Donald Trump and Democratic Candidate Joe Biden. Hayes says registration applications even poured into her office after the deadline. Those unfortunately will have to wait until the next election to vote. See VOTERS page 2

Seguin PD to activate emergency lights on patrol units at city wide Trunk and Treat locations this Halloween night WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Despite having to alter years of tradition, the Seguin Police Department is setting out to still make Halloween fun for local children. Mike McCann, the administrative lieutenant with the Seguin PD, says due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the police department was forced to cancel its traditional DARE Halloween Safe House at the Seguin Coliseum. Instead, the police department this Halloween night will be hosting Trunk and Treat stations across the city. After years and years of hosting the Safe House for local families, McCann says officers still wanted a way to connect with local children and their families. “Unfortunately due to the COVID pandemic, we are not going to be able to do our annual Halloween Safe House which obviously, we do not like. We enjoy spending time with the kids and getting out and meeting everybody and spending time with our

community. In light of that, we have found another way to still be out with the kids so we have six different locations throughout the city that traditionally have good turnouts for trick-or-treaters. We will have our officers out in marked units, parked at these different locations and the officers will have candy and their baseball cards if they still have any and they’ll be handing out candy to all the kids coming by,” said McCann.

McCann says officers will be joined by a member of the Seguin PD Citizen Police Academy Alumni at each of the six Trunk and Treat locations. “We are going to be at San Marcos and Bauer (at) Bauer Park, Club View East and Country Club Drive, Coral Sky and Mustang Meadow (Mill Creek) Subdivision, Elmwood Dr. and Redwood St, AJ Malone St. and Chapman Dr. and Birmingham Dr. and Nolte Farms Dr and officers will be out at all these locations with their marked patrol units with candy and hopefully, the kiddos will come up and

the city on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. Those wishing to donate independently wrapped candy to the police department may do so by dropping it off in the police lobby.

Guadalupe County reports significant increase in new voters VOTERS, continued from page 1 Even though Guadalupe County did report an increase in new voters, Hayes says some of that number will be shaved a bit as it is offset by those who have left and will now vote in a different county. “Of course, there’s people moving away too. You know, they get canceled so that kind of offsets the new registrations when you’ve got people moving out of the county.

There’s a lot of voter movement but according to this report, it’s at 13,377,” said Hayes. Only two more days remain for early voting. Polls throughout Guadalupe County will continue to be open today and Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Various races will appear on the ballot. Among those are the race for Seguin Mayor, Seguin City Council, Navarro and Marion School Boards, and the city of Marion. Three local lake associations

will also be seeking votes this November as they work toward the creation of Water Control and Improvement District (WCID). Those entities include Lake Dunlap, Lake McQueeney and Lake Placid. Guadalupe County voters are reminded that individuals can vote at any of the nine early voting locations in the county. Curbside voting is also available to any voter, who has difficulty walking or standing for long periods of time or who is showing symptoms of COVID-19.

Upon arriving at the Seguin Elections Office, they are asked to call 830-3036363. Early voting locations include the Seguin Elections Office, Cibolo Fire Station Number 2, Central Texas Technology Center in New Braunfels, Grace Church in New Braunfels, New Berlin City Hall, the Schertz Elections Office, the county’s annex building in Schertz, the Seguin ISD Administration Building and at Selma City Hall.

2020 Sip ‘n Stroll Mug now on sale Mug to feature 1889 Victorian style county court house

(Seguin) -- The 2020 Sip ‘n Stroll mug is officially on sale. The mugs are now available at downtown merchants and will be available until sold out.

county fair to name a few.”

For the 10th year, the Sip ‘n Stroll mug will feature a historic Seguin landmark, the 1889 Victorian Style County Court House. Built in 1889, this courthouse took on a more Victorian look than previous courthouses. The present courthouse replaced it in 1938.

“I started creating art at a young age in many different mediums,” said Medina. “I was commissioned by my cousin, who lives in Seguin, to create a picture of the old Seguin Court House. When she heard about the Sip ‘n Stroll contest, she encouraged me to submit.”

The 2020 Sip ‘n Stroll committee selected artwork submitted by Bryan Medina, an Austin native with family ties in Seguin, to be featured on the 2020 mug. The artwork is a pen and ink drawing with a stippling technique, a process of drawing using numerous small dots or specks.

The 2020 Sip ‘n Stroll mugs can be purchased for $15.00 at various local businesses in and around downtown Seguin.

A cartoonist by trade, Medina’s artwork spans from intricate architecture and landscapes to his very own comic strip. Medina’s family is from Seguin and he remembers spending many summers here as a kid. “I have some great memories (of Seguin),” said Medina.

Medina says upon hearing about the contest, he jumped on the project right away.

“The mugs have become a collectible with many people purchasing a mug from each year,” said Kelly Schoenvogel, a member of the Sip ‘n Stroll Committee, “And we strongly encourage people to purchase their mugs early as we have sold out in the past.” “Barbecues at Starcke Park, swimming at the wave pool, Fourth of July parades, and the

Hospital employees publicly recognized for 24/7 dedication during pandemic Dr. Lee says as a hospital, staff came very close to reaching its maximum potential of having 50 COVID-19 cases at one time. He says what has been most impressive is the hospital’s ability to mobilize care for COVID-19 patients while at the same time remaining focus on all other types of patients.

DR LEE continued from page 1 Dr. Lee says GRMC’s ability to stand tall begins with its leadership team - a team that he says continues to work hard. “The senior team met everyday

for months. I don’t know if that would be possible for the county commissioners to meet everyday for about five to six months in a row but that’s what the senior team had to do seven days a week,” said Dr. Lee.

“Certain areas of the hospital had to be shut down such as elective surgery and other areas had to be turned into isolation beds to meet the demands. We had a maximum of 44 patients at

one time at the hospital with COVID-19,” said Dr. Lee.

Dr. Lee says although the danger is still far from over, he credits the hospital for continuing with its plans to make its efforts even better. Just before wrapping up his presentation, Dr. Lee reminded commissioners to get their flu shots, to continue to wear their mask, social distance, wash their hands and assume that everyone they come into contact with has the COVID-19 virus. He says the potential for another wave is always an imminent threat.
