and they said we just need to go farther than just one day and see what we can do to maybe honor them all month and so they are asking everybody to keep these veterans in their thoughts and prayers. Also, maybe even ask some of the local merchants to maybe give some special considerations to veterans with some discounts and some specials and so forth in order to honor them as well," said Keil. Several local veterans and organizations that support veterans attended the proclamation ceremony. Those groups included Veterans Serving Veterans, the Texas Veterans Commission, the Department of Veterans Affairs, GI Forum, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez’ Office, American Legion Post #245, Geronimo VFW Post #8456 and Auxiliary, VFW Post #9213, SS American Memorial/ Guadalupe Valley Young Marines, the Seguin Chamber of Commerce and city of Seguin employees who are veterans.

month of November 2019 as Military Appreciation Month in the city of Seguin. Keil says although Veterans Days is observed on Nov. 11, he wants to see that appreciation expressed everyday. "Great people like Rev. Flakes stepped up and Jeremy Roy
Rev. Jeremy Roy, who is also member of the Seguin City Council, says there are all sorts of ways that people can show support and thank these individuals for our freedom. "Through the chamber and through the Downtown (Business) Association that might include lunches, maybe offer discounts, maybe put a message up on their marquee -- any idea they can come up with, any promotion. Churches could have an observance on Veterans Day. They could do a writing campaign to members of their church who might be serving elsewhere. They could donate their money or their time to an organization that supports active military like Wounded Warriors so it's really what anybody wants to do but the goal is to honor those that have served or those that are currently serving," said Roy. The showing of support to veterans is encouraged to continue through Saturday, Nov. 30. Of course, officials says support for veterans is a commitment that should last year round.

Seguin SEDC celebrates prestigious appointment, hiring of assistant director with Seguin. Her region covered parts of Seguin so she's been already in some of the activities that we have worked on in the past and we are currently working on before she officially came on board on our team so it's a going to be a tremendous benefit to our organization," said Schneuker.
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Seguin will soon have a hand in helping to support the economic growth not only here at home but across the Lone Star State. Joshua Schneuker, director of the Seguin Economic Development Corporation, has been appointed to serve a two-year term as a board member on the Texas Economic Development Council (TEDC). TEDC is the professional association dedicated to the development of economic and employment opportunities in Texas. TEDC is also designed to develop strategies which promote a positive business climate within the state. Schneuker says he's honored for the appointment to the TEDC Board of Directors and looks forward to sharing the experience with the city. "The Texas Economic Development Council, they are kind of like our professional association for economic development professionals within the state of Texas. They do work closely though with the Office of the Governor and their economic development division in order to just work together on state laws and other things like that that impact our industry. It creates more exposure again for the city of Seguin having somebody on that board of directors who is involved with reviewing policies and things like that and being a part of that whole process. In addition to the professional benefits myself, I think it's definitely also a benefit for the city of Seguin and Seguin
In her previous role, Schneuker says Dennis provided advanced and highly specialized consultation, technical assistance and direction to industry, constituents, economic development organizations and local, state and federal units of government.

been hired as an assistant director of the Seguin EDC. Dennis joins Seguin from the Office of the Governor’s Economic Development and Tourism Division where she served six years as a regional representative. She represented the Economic Development & Tourism Division in 60 South and Midwest Texas counties, and marketed Texas as one of the world’s premier business locations. Schneuker, who last filled that role as an assistant, says the additional leadership is vital to continuing the city’s momentum for progress.
"I think I definitely made sure that I've kind of made my way into that organization, started meeting the right people and getting not only my name out there but the Seguin name out there as well and building those relationships. In our industry, economic development is really built on establishing those relationships with not only folks that we work recruitment projects with but also on the professional side in ensuring the longevity of our industry," said Schneuker. Schneuker's prestigious appointment is not the only thing being celebrated by the local office. He says Lindsay Dennis has also

"We've had so much activity over the past couple of years where we felt there was a need to bring that position back online and we are excited that Lindsay expected the offer to join our team. I think her background coming from the Office of the Governor and their economic development department is going to be a tremendous asset to us in our efforts and she's already so well versed
“The City of Seguin and the Seguin EDC are very excited to have Lindsay Dennis join our team,” said Schneuker. “We considered several qualified candidates for the position, but it was Lindsay's previous experience with the Office of the Governor's Economic Development Department and familiarity with local and state economic development programs that made her the ideal candidate for the position."

Navarro staves off scrappy Cuero effort, secures share of district title (Geronimo) - Navarro overcame a slow start and a valiant effort by a defending state champion fighting for its playoff life to notch a 22-14 win over Cuero Friday evening at Erwin-Lee Field. The win keeps the Panthers undefeated at 9-0 and clinches at least a share of the District 13-4A-Division II championship. Navarro is 4-0 in district play and can secure the outright title and top playoff seed with a road win over Bandera in this Friday's regular season finale. A year after rolling to the 4A Division II state title, the Gobblers find themselves with a 2-7 overall mark, a 1-3 district record, and virtually no chance of qualifying for the UIL playoffs. Even if Cuero beats Wimberley in the regular season finale, the Gobblers would need Llano to lose to 0-9 Austin-Eastside Memorial to grab the district's fourth playoff seed.
Cuero used a touchdown and two-point conversion to take an early 8-0 lead and held onto that cushion through most of the first half. Nick Billings hit Johnny Alegria with a 26-yard touchdown pass just before halftime, and the ensuing two-point conversion knotted up the game at the intermission. Kyle Dietert scored the go-ahead touchdown from 19 yards out after an interception by Jean "MoMo" Sims in the third quarter. Euler Deleon put the final Panther points on the board with an 80yard run later in the period. Deleon finished with 182 rushing yards on 14 carries. Sims added 68 yards on seven attempts. Mark Wozniak paced the defense with six tackles. Brian Holmes recorded two sacks. Navarro's kickoff in Bandera this Friday is set for 7:30 p.m.
Seguin volleyball drops tiebreak match to McCollum (San Antonio) - San Antonio-McCollum relegated Seguin to the fourth playoff seed in District 26-5A by handing the Matadors a 3-1 loss in Friday's third-place tiebreak match at Veterans Memorial High School. The Matadors dropped the first set 25-21 and rebounded to win the second by the same final. The Cowgirls edged Seguin 25-23 in the third set and closed it out with a 25-22 win in the fourth. Julianna Harrington and Leslie Muenchow led Seguin's
attack with 11 kills apiece. Harrington also contributed four block assists and two service aces. Riley Brittain set for 22 assists and sent two aces over the net. Amasti Canales paced the Mats defensively with 34 digs. Brinley Beicker added 18 digs, Brittain 12. Seguin (21-21) meets District 25-5A champion Dripping Springs in the bi-district playoffs this week. The time and location details had yet to be finalized at press time.

Brought to you exclusively by: First Commercial Bank Sports Seguin bids farewell to old Matador Stadium with 66-0 blowout of Austin-Navarro sides, and guys did that," Seguin head coach Travis Bush said. "We came out and were able to take an early lead and get a lot of guys in the ballgame there, and finish this thing off right and send Matador Stadium out with a bang." Contreras gashed the Vikings defense for a 20-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and Ullrich produced the final points ever at old Matador Stadium with an 18-yard run on a read option keeper while playing quarterback with a group of reserves. Ullrich, a sophomore starter at wide receiver who leads the Mats in catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns, has designs on competing for the starting quarterback job next season. Bush liked what he saw when Ullrich relieved Mickles behind the center late in the second period. "And you've got Jerivan in there at running-back, and a lot of guys in there on defense as well, so it was good to see those guys running around and get some snaps, and be in some situations that you've just got to learn from." Washington only needed 22 rushing yards to top 1,000 for the season. He gained 21 on his first carry and smashed the milestone with a long gain on his second attempt. Washington's four touchdowns lifted his season total to 19.
The Matadors didn't run more than five plays on any scoring drive, and the defense held Austin-Navarro to two first downs. Seguin's seniors remained on the field long after the game's conclusion with members of the band, cheer squad, classmates, friends, and family members. The 2019 Mats won't play any more home games, but Bush wants his players to embrace the opportunity to write the season's end story with a district game against Austin-LBJ this Friday and at least one playoff game left on the schedule. "Today we talked before the game, you know, how fast time flies," Bush said. "We were sitting there August 5, and we talked about 'you're going to blink, and it's going to be November 1, and sure enough it is. You're only guaranteed two more weeks, and it's up to us what we want to do with it. We just talked about not taking things for granted, and you learn that the older you get in life." The win moves Seguin to 5-4 overall, 51 in district play. The Matadors head to Nelson Field to battle Austin-LBJ for the district's No. 2 playoff seed this Friday at 7:30 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:30 with the Navarro, Marion, and Lifegate coaches' shows.

CDC Reports 37 Deaths as Result of Vaping-Related Illness
Experts Say Don't Eat Too Much Black Licorice On Halloween
(Washington, DC) -- The Center for Disease Control says 38 people have died and more than 18-hundred people have become sick from vaping-related illness this year. The federal agency's report shows an increase of 284 cases and an increase of three fatalities since last week. The CDC still hasn't identified a specific product or ingredient that is making people sick. Many of those who became ill purchased cartridges for vaping devices on the street and many contained an active ingredient in marijuana.
(New York, NY) -- Health experts are hoping you didn't get a lot of black licorice for Halloween. An FDA alert two years ago found black licorice could contain a chemical compound that can cause the body's potassium levels to fall, leading to heart problems and high blood pressure. Experts say the risk is lower with the modern version of black licorice, because it often doesn't contain any actual licorice. But the FDA warns to be on the safe side, don't eat any Halloween candy in large quantities.
LAUSD Suing Juul
CVS Health To Begin Drone Drug Delivery To Customers
(Los Angeles, CA) -- E-cigarette giant Juul is getting sued by the second biggest school district in the country. Officials with Los Angeles Unified School district have filed a class-action lawsuit against the company, saying it's responsible for creating an epidemic that affects the health of students. District officials say they've been forced to divert dollars from the classroom in order to teach kids about the dangers of e-ciargettes. The CDC has confirmed 34 deaths linked to vaping and more than 15-hundred cases of serious lung injuries in 49 states.
(Woonsocket, RI) -- People in some parts of the country could soon have the prescription drugs delivered by drone. CVS Health is partnering with UPS and its Flight Forward service to set up drug deliveries to its customers. It'll begin tests in one or two U.S. cities in the next few weeks. Flight Forward has been operating ten flights a day in Raleigh, North Carolina delivering medical materials on the grounds of WakeMed Hospital.
