Community encourged to give, show support to two local families Memorial benefit being planned Family seeks help after unable to return home following house fire for local woman killed in car crash By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Help is being organized for a local family of six who is now forced to start over after losing their home to a fire earlier this week. A GoFundMe account and a drop off location for cash and gift cards have now been
established for the Kirkpatrick-Davila Family. The family, on Tuesday, lost their home to a fire that originally started next door at their neighbor’s home. The fire was reported Tuesday night in the 800 block of Cedar Street. See GOFUNDME, page 3
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (McQueeney) -- A mother of six small children will be remembered this weekend by friends and customers at a local tavern. A benefit fundraiser is being planned this Sunday for SeVannah Shay Mata, 28, who was killed during a head-
on collision early Sunday morning in northern Guadalupe County. Mata, who worked at Boot Scootin in McQueeney, is being supported by customers and management who have teamed together to help raise money for her family. See BENEFIT, page 2

After learning the news of her tragic death, Bar Manager Sabrina Nylund says folks quickly mobilized to pull something together this weekend. “What’s heartwarming to me is it’s the customers that banded together. It’s the customers that have put this whole thing together. They were like hey, let me do this and you know one is talking to me and another one hears, ‘oh, I am going to do this too’ and ‘I’m going to do this’ and it just got of grew because the little bit of time that we were open, that she worked here, she did make an impact and people immediately jumped in and want to help. The biggest drive is honoring her and her babies,” said Nylund. Mata had just begun her job at the bar when COVID-19 struck, and the business was forced to close. However, during that short period while they were open, Nylund says Mata was still able to connect with everyone she came across. Nylund says not only was she a mother but also a former U.S. Marine. She was also on a roller derby team and enjoyed her time as a member of the New Braunfels Pinups. Nylund says no matter what Mata was involved with, she always made a lasting impression. “SeVannah is just a beautiful person. She’s very beautiful. She’s got the biggest heart that there is. As soon as she started, her very first day there, she’s walking around, very big bubbly personality, ‘Hi, I’m SeVannah. Who are you?’ and trying immediately to memorize their drinks and nobody walked in the bar that didn’t feel happy or welcome to be around her. She just hugged everybody. She made them happy. She laughed and joked with them. She would sit and listen you know if they had a complaint, ‘oh, work
was terrible today.’ She sat with open ears and listened to every one of those customers,” said Nylund.
Nylund says her beautiful small children alone was good enough reason for folks to team up. She says the mother always enjoyed talking about her six children who are all under the age of 10. “SeVannah has six small children and that plays a really big role in the decision to throw a little benefit. Let’s put it towards whatever the family needs it for. There’s just so many babies to think about and we want to honor her,” said Nylund. Nylund says she hopes the community comes out to support the family. She says food and raffles will be available. “We will have several options for them to come out. I know we are doing chicken plates with chicken, rice, beans and all the trimmings. Those plates will be sold for $10 and they are also doing cheeseburgers and chips also for $8. We have quite a bit of baked goods coming. We are going to do a 50/50 drawing and also a bottle drop. You can buy tickets and then if you win, you choose a bottle that has been donated by somebody,” said Nylund. Mata was the passenger in a vehicle when it was hit head-on early Sunday morning by another vehicle being driven by Jacob Perez, 33. Perez, who was also traveling with his six-year-old daughter, reportedly veered into the southbound lanes of State Highway 46 striking the vehicle and killing the young mother. The driver, of the vehicle in which Mata was riding in suffered, serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Perez’s daughter also suffered only minor injuries.
Officials say Perez “reportedly showed signs of intoxication.” Following a blood alcohol level test, Perez was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter.
The benefit fundraiser, in memory of SeVannah Mata, gets underway at 2 p.m. Sunday at Boot Scootin. The bar is located at 4004 FM 78 in McQueeney.

GOFUNDME continued from page 1
Family friend Jennifer Caruso says luckily, all six of the family members managed to get out of the home safely. However, she says the family is left to pick up the pieces. “They are a married couple and they are young. They have four children 10 and under. The youngest one is only 1-yearsold. The house is a total loss. There really isn’t nothing at all salvageable. We saw the home and we walked through it today and if it wasn’t burnt, it was ruined with water and smoke damage and so, they will be starting from scratch which is devastating of course. We are still trying to figure out a living arrangement. We are working right now just to make sure that they have somewhere to stay for the rest of this week. We are trying to just make sure they have clothing and food and those immediate necessities for this week
and then, we will be focused on the larger picture, the longer term arrangement for a new place to live and replacing their things,” said Caruso. Caruso says it’s been very difficult for the entire family and hopes that folks will extend a helping hand. She says her main focus right now is to lessen as much stress as possible for the family.
“So, Tristan is a hardworking family man. He gives everything to his family. He is in plumbing and he’s working on becoming a licensed journeyman plumber so he’s been in the process of becoming a plumber and Autumn is a stay at home mother, dedicated, loving, fantastic mother to her four children and the kiddos, again, range from 10 all the way down to one. The two older kids are really struggling with the realization that all of their items, all of the things that they loved, the things that they have had since childhood that
means so much to them are gone and we are trying to help them process that and move through that acceptance. But right now, everybody is still in sort of a state of shock and since it was a rental home, they did not even have renter’s insurance as a lot of young people aren’t’ even aware of the importance of getting rental insurance and so we don’t believe that there will be any financial support coming from an insurance company or any other entity like that,” said Caruso.
Caruso says families are welcome to donate via GoFundMe or they can stop by and drop off cash and gift cards at Dietz Flower Shop. “But, if we could ease a little bit of the financial stress for them and the GoFund account is one way. We are also accepting gift cards to restaurants, assistance paying for the hotel for a little bit. We are accepting cash donations
and I know a lot of people want to give tangible items but the reality is with a family of six crammed in a two bedroom hotel, adjoining rooms, and they don’t have anywhere to put a lot of items right now so that’s why we are really asking for just cards or monetary donations,” said Caruso.
The family consist of four children, two boys and two girls. They include 10-yearold Ja; 9-year-old Ely; 3-year-old Sammy and 1-year-old Landon. Again, the family ask that only gift cards, cash, checks or funds via GoFund be provided at this time. Monetary donations will be accepted at Dietz Flower Shop Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To donate, log onto gofundme.com and visit Kirkpatrick-Davila Family Fire Recovery.

Marion chases playoff berth in regular season finale vs. Cole, Saturday game to air on KWED Jourdanton has already secured the championship and top playoff seed in the district. Poteet and Randolph face each other Saturday to determine the second and third seeds.
Lytle currently sits in fourth place with a 3-3 district record, and the Pirates have already concluded the regular season. Marion would also have a 3-3 district mark with a win over Cole and secure the fourth playoff seed with the head-to-head tiebreak over the Pirates. The Bulldogs beat Lytle 27-7 in their regular season meeting. Cole enters Saturday with a 1-5 overall record and a 1-4 district mark under head coach John Reyes. The Cougars make the trip to Marion on a short week after edging Cotulla 23-22 for their first win Monday evening. (Marion) - The Marion Bulldogs face a must-win game to clinch the fourth and final playoff seed in District 14-3A-Division I when they finish up the regular season against San Antonio-Cole on Saturday at Veterans Stadium. Marion is 4-5 overall with a 2-3 district record in Ryne Miller’s third season as head coach after dropping consecutive games to Poteet, 29-22, and Randolph, 35-21, over the past two weeks.
No invidual stats have been published on any platform or made available by the Cole coaching staff, but quarterbacks J.P. Reyes and Walker Cunningham, receivers John Legaspe and Anthony S’chevalier, and running-back Hayes Hanna appear to be their best offensive players. “Their offense with Reyes, I think he throws the ball really well, and makes some really good decisions, and they’ve got another quarterback, number 14 (Cunningham), that comes in and does a really good job for them. I think they’re explosive. They make a lot of big plays, and obviously our guys have got to be able to contain them. Like every week,
we want to make sure we get lined up correctly, and we’ve definitely got to stop the run this week.” Cunningham was an All-District selection on both sides of the ball in 2019, and named his old district’s Punter of the Year. Defensive end Rechod Johnson is Cole’s lone returning post-season honoree on defense. Marion looks to attack the Cole defense with dual-threat quarterback Tanner Beakley and the full compliment of weapons around him. Beakley enters Saturday with 1,412 yards and 14 touchdowns through the air to go with 389 yards and nine scores rushing. Dynamic sophomore Dominic Castellanos leads the receiver with 35 catches for 367 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Samuel Montoya has coralled a team-high four touchdown catches, with Jayden Williams and Dillon Blakely grabbing three apiece. Aden Rackley leads the team in rushing with 396 yards, and has scored three total TDs. The Bulldogs’ statistical leaders on defense include sophomore linebacker Kross Kelso with 109 tackles and 18 tackles-for-loss, senior linebacker Williams with nine sacks, and Castellanos with three interceptions. Saturday’s game at Veterans Stadium is set for a noon kickoff. The contest will air on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com, with pre-game coverage at 11:30 a.m.

Navarro looks to stay sharp in final district game vs. San Antonio-YMLA (San Antonio) - Navarro concludes the District 14-4A-Division II schedule and the 2020 regular season Friday with a Week 11 matchup against San Antonio-Young Men’s Leadership Academy (YMLA) at the SAISD Sports Complex. The Panthers are 7-2 overall with a 4-0 district record in Rod Blount’s third season as head coach after a 58-14 non-district road win over Houston Christian last week. Navarro has already secured the district championship and No. 1 playoff seed. YMLA has only taken the field once due to season-long COVID-19 complications. The Lions racked up 431 total yards in a 63-0 road rout of Austin-Eastside Memorial last Saturday at Nelson Field. Quarterback Alfredo Andrade went 7-9 through the air for 137 yards and four touchdowns while running for 33 yards and a score. Running-backs Jeremiah Shakir (12 car., 81 yds., 2 TD), Jammerick Brown (3 car., 67 yds., 1 TD), and Aaron Pinkney (7 car., 62 yds., 1 TD), along with receiver Brandon Mancillas (2 TD) led YMLA’s balanced attack. In addition to carving a notch in the win column, Navarro’s
goal is to play a clean game and maintain a high level of mental focus and attention to detail going into next week’s bi-district playoffs.
“Just making sure that we’re smooth, running our offense like we want to and expect to, doing the little things right, protecting the football, carrying out good fakes, and the big guys up front taking care of their responsibilities,” Blount said. Navarro’s offensive leaders include senior tailback Sam Muniga (904 rushing yds., 10.8 avg., 9 TDs, 188 rec. yds., 3 TD), junior halfback Brody Whitson (648 yds., 9 TD), junior fullback Orlando Ortiz (471 yds., 7 TD), and junior quarterback Nick Billings (576 passing yds., 170 rushing yds., 14 total TD). Muniga and Aden Supak have each pulled in three interceptions for the Panther defense. Friday’s kickoff at the SAISD Sports Complex is slated for 7:30 p.m. The Panther Report with Coach Blount will air at 6:50 on KWED-1580-AM and Seguintoday.com.

Two Candidates Who Died From COVID-19 Win Elections
(Fargo, ND) -- Two candidates who died from complications of COVID-19 are winners on election day. Republican David Andahl won a seat in the North Dakota state legislature a month after dying from the disease. A Tennessee mayor died on the day the 80-year-old was reelected to lead Benton. He has been the mayor there for 30 years. In both cases, someone else will be appointed to serve the term.
New Study Says COVID Ten Times Deadlier Than Flu
(New York, NY) -- A new study says COVID-19 is far more deadly than the flu with nearly two-million infections in New York. Scientists with Mt. Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine are now reporting that during the spring, at least one-point-seven million New Yorkers, around 22 percent of the City, were infected with COVID. The report says the fatality rate is about point-97-percent, which is approximately ten times more deadly than the flu. Many infections were not initially tied to COVID because individuals were asymptomatic or had mild symptoms. However this study discovered COVID antibodies in plasma samples from over 10-thousand hospitalized patients between February and July.
New Jersey Inmates Released To Limit COVID Spread

Louisville Cardinals Pause Football Operations Over COVID
(Louisville, KY) -- The University of Louisville is calling a timeout for team-related football activities because of the coronavirus. The school said there’s been a heightened quantity of positive COVID-19 tests. The Cardinals’ Saturday game against Virginia has been postponed until November 14th. The delay works out because both teams originally had a bye that weekend.
Johnson & Johnson Loses Missouri Talc Appeal
(St. Louis, MO) -- Johnson & Johnson says it’ll ask the U.S. Supreme Court to weigh in after losing its bid to appeal a two-point-one-billion-dollar Missouri award to women who claimed its talc-based baby powder caused their cancers. The Missouri Supreme Court has said “no” to hearing the New Jersey-based company’s appeal. The jury found that J&J’s talc was a leading cause of ovarian cancer for 20 women. It awarded the plaintiffs four-point-seven-billion-dollars but an intermediate appeals court cut the award by more than half.
