Seguin ISD voters turn down request to help get it out of the RED
(Seguin) – It’s back to the drawing board for the Seguin ISD after voters said “no” to Prop A which would have been key to solving its $4 million deficit.
The Seguin ISD was hoping that voters would consider lowering the tax rate by saying “yes” to its Voter Approval Tax Ratification Election (VATRE).
District officials say because of legislation, they have to ask the voters to approve a lower tax rate, so that they can take in more money from the state.
Tuesday’s decision by the voters now puts continued strain on the current budget.
Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Veronica Vijil says it was not
the outcome they were hoping for.
“I have to say it’s disappointing. I mean in a word, it’s disappointing. We worked hard and we knew that this was important for the school district, for public education and it just didn’t go our way today,” said Vijil. Red, pg. 4
Dodgen to return as city mayor
(Seguin) – City of Seguin voters are giving Mayor Donna Dodgen another four years in office. Dodgen on Tuesday defeated challenger Francisco Luciano “Frank” Herrera. Dodgen received 6585 of the votes cast while Herrera trailed with 3,238 votes.
Dodgen says she appreciates the continued support and looks forward to this next chapter. She says not only is the city growing but it’s growing in the right direction.
“This is so very exciting, and
you know, I just have to say how I’m appreciative of the community –– of Seguin, blessing me again for another four years and saying yes, let’s keep moving forward, let’s keep the momentum that we have going.
And just making us a better place to live, play and work. I mean it's just awesome. We have lots of work still to do and I truly appreciate the confidence,” said Dodgen.
This will mark Dodgen’s second term in office.
City of Seguin welcomes new council members
(Seguin) – One incumbent and two newcomers will be taking their seats on the Seguin City Council. Voters on Tuesday elected council members for Districts 2, 4 and 6.
Elected to represent District 2 was newcomer David Eveld. Eveld defeated challenger Mario Hernandez for the position. Eveld received 443 of the votes cast while Hernandez received 394 votes.
Eveld assumes the seat left vacant following the death of Councilwoman Sonia Mendez earlier this year. Eveld says he is honored by the support shown at the polls.
“I just really appreciate the support. It’s the first time I’ve run for a city council seat, and I enjoyed getting to meet people and a lot of people were very helpful. I just really appreciate the support that people gave me. I’m really looking forward to representing District 2,” said Eveld.
There will also be a new face representing the constituents of District 4. John Carlsson defeated Ileen Rangel who was unsuccessful of following in the footsteps of her husband Chris Rangel who up to this point served the position but due to term limits was ineligible to run for re-election. Carlsson, who was
unavailable for comment last night, received 514 of the votes cast while Rangel fell short with 488 votes. Returning to the Seguin City Council will be Incumbent Monica Carter in District 6. Carter, who faced two challengers, was the top vote getter with 813 of the votes cast. Wrapping up the results were Felix Moreno with 415 votes and Suzanne Wynn with 298 votes. Seguin, pg. 4
Gaudalupe County elects new commissioner
(Seguin) – The Guadalupe County Commissioners Court will welcome its newest member. Republican Candidate Jaqueline Ott on Tuesday captured the win for the Commissioner Pct. 1 seat.
Ott led the entire night with a huge margin defeating not one but two challengers. Ott received 15,145 of the votes cast while Democratic Candidate Nahomie Alanis followed with 4,723 votes. Rounding out the candidates was Libertarian Nolan Schmidt with 930 votes.
Ott says she is both honored and excited about this new chapter in serving others.
“I have wanted this for a long time. This has been fourteen months of really hard work between the primaries, the runoff, and now the general. I’m exhausted, but I’m so happy,” said Ott.
Ott says she is especially thankful to the voters who not only came out this week but who have shown their support since March.
“I want to thank everyone that came out three different times to vote in this race; I know that’s a lot. We had a lot of folks that put in a lot of time to help –– put in a lot of heart.
And I am just so grateful to everyone. I’m so grateful to the community for having confidence in me to serve in this very important position. I’m so excited to be able to be a part of commissioner’s court and make decisions that are in the best interest of Guadalupe County to preserve our conservative values and continue to see it flourish,” said Ott.
Also in the county, voters welcomed back Daryl John as their Guadalupe County Tax AssessorCollector. John defeated Democrat candidate Jesus Trinidad for the position. John received 54,217 of the votes cast while Trinidad received 25,611 votes.
Ott, who replaces retiring Commissioner Greg Seidenberger will take over her new role on Jan. 1. John will also be sworn into office at the beginning of the year.
Navarro ISD voters elect members of its board of trustees
(Geronimo) – The school board is officially complete in the Navarro ISD. Voters on Tuesday elected three at large trustee positions as well as one two-year unexpired trustee term. Claiming the three at-large positions were Incumbents Clint Scheib and Melissa Sartain and Becki Stephenson. In fact, Stephenson ended the night by leading the pack of eight candidates as the top vote getter. Stephenson received 2,170 of the votes cast followed by Scheib with 2,164 votes and Sartain with 1,433 votes.
Stephenson says she appreciates those who are affording her the opportunity to lead the district.
“I am overwhelmed and increasingly energized to work with and support my community. Our schools are the heart of our community, and I’m very committed
to working with fellow board members, educators and parents to support the rapid growth that we’re experiencing and uphold the values that we really cherish here at Navarro,” said Stephenson.
Sartain says she too was humbled to have returned to her leadership position and looks forward to continuing the work.
“I’m just really grateful that the community is entrusting me to represent them and serve them for another four years. I’m really excited about the election results. I think it’s going to be a great board of trustees, and I think we’re going to get a lot of work done,” said Sartain.
The other candidates following closely behind include Kyle Hunter with 1,340 votes; Jared Gallini with 1,042 votes; Kimberly Jones with 814 votes; Kristen Green with 798
votes and Megan Ossinger with 551 votes. It should be noted that Scheib was unavailable for comment following last night’s results.
Meanwhile garnering the most votes for the one unexpired trustee term was Joel Frederick with 1, 352 votes.
Frederick says he’s both excited and ready to get to work.
“I’m just happy of course that it turned out the way it did. It was an interesting race. Politics is a different world that I’m not used to in my volunteer life. But ultimately, I’m just ready to go to work and continue to work for Navarro,” said Frederick.
The other three candidates included Jacob Coppedge with 1,227 votes followed by Matthew Reed with 791 votes and Russell Trotti with 263 votes.
Aldermen return to seats on the Marion City Council
(Marion) – There’s been a total makeover of the Marion City Council. Voters in Marion welcomed five new aldermen during Tuesday’s election. The city had been in limbo after the resignation of most of its city leaders. This election was to be a step forward in helping the city recover and get back into normal operation.
As reported by the Seguin Daily News, the Marion City Council faced a crisis not only because it did not have enough council members but also because the city failed to call for a May election, leaving them with only two council members. However, the Guadalupe County Commissioner’s Court over the summer unanimously approved a petition request from Marion
citizens to hold an election this fall to fill seats on the city council. The move by the court was strictly a mandate from the state.
Results of that election now have returned individuals to those elected seats. Claiming a spot on the Marion City Council are the top five vote getters Jerry Penshorn with 272 votes; Karen Mills with 203 votes; Phil Karrer with 186 votes; Kerry Gutierrez, with 158 votes and Jeremiah Burns with 112 votes. Rounding out the pack were Carl Martin with 109 votes: Jorge Olea with 86 votes and Jena Rodriguez with 78 votes.
The new aldermen are expected to be sworn into office during the council’s next regular meeting.
Voters send new state rep to Austin
Red, continued.
Although they know the district will be okay, Dr. Vijil says the process will still be challenging.
“It’s a hard time for public education. We seem to be getting a lot of obstacles, and we’ll overcome this. We know we will. It will definitely make things a challenge. It will be very challenging moving forward. It was going to help –– not remove the deficit, but it was certainly going to contribute toward narrowing that gap. It won’t now, so we’ll continue to look for ways to: A - generate any funds through grants or whatever options there are for us out there. And B - take a hard look, again, at what may
need to be looked at very closely as far as our removal of resources that we’ve learned to count on,” said Vijil.
In the meantime, Dr. Vijil says the district will look to the state in hopes of identifying its next steps.
“All eyes will be on the legislative session starting in January and we know what they will be looking at. We know that it will continue to be a hurdle for us. It’s just a hurdle and we’ll watch it, and we’ll monitor it very closely. Hopefully, they make some decisions that are in favor of public education,” said Vijil.
A total of 9,369 votes were cast against Prop A. That’s compared to only 8,935 votes that were cast in favor of lowering the tax rate.
Seguin, continued.
Carter says she is thrilled to be returning to the council and looks forward to even more great things happening.
“I can honestly say that I am happy that this election is over, but I’m truly mostly humbled and honored to have been elected to serve my city and community that I love for another four years. By far, I want to thank Seguin. I want to thank District 6 for their enormous amount of encouragement and support. I’ll continue to do my best to be the representative they voted for and have asked me to be. I’d like to thank Mr. Moreno and Mrs. Wynn who were both candidates that tried equally as hard.
So yeah, I think we ran a good race and I’m just happy to have it behind me. I’m ready to get back to work and get going,” said Carter.
The newly elected candidates are scheduled to be sworn into office during the next regular council meeting.

But civil rights groups and immigration advocates say the policy will keep those in need of treatment from seeking help.
PepsiCo Win NY AG ‘Predatory’ Lawsuit Over Plastic Pollution
(Buffalo, NY) -- A lawsuit over PepsiCo’s suspected plastics pollution initiated by New York Attorney General Letitia James has been dismissed. The Supreme Court judge said that James did not provide substantial evidence that the company’s single use plastic was a public problem. In the ruling the judges stated that disciplining PepsiCo for the public’s failure to follow littering laws is not the job of the judicial system. “The judicial system should not be burdened with predatory lawsuits that seek to impose punishment while searching for a crime,” the judge said in his ruling.
