Limited space at Christian Cupboard halts plans for normal holiday food drive

Food donations, however, still be accepted by individuals, families By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

Courtesy Photo

(Seguin) -- Normally at this time, Seguin’s food pantry, the Christian Cupboard, would already begin to see its shelves fill up with donations from across the community. Those donations would be pulled in from schools, churches and businesses all collecting as part of the cupboard’s annual Fall Food Harvest Drive. Unfortunately, however, due to a building project halted by COVID-19, Regina Lee, executive director of the cupboard, says this year’s food drive has been cancelled. She says the back end of the cupboard has been demolished in anticipation of a rebuild project. That project has obviously left them with less storage space to hold food. Now, although they won’t be hosting their annual food drive, Lee says food still be accepted from now through Dec. 31. “We don’t have the space that we normally have. No one has done anything to us. We were blessed by a member of the community in his will. He left us some money. We have elected to take this money and put up a new building and refurbish the front part of our building. Now, in all this happening, COVID-19 came, and everything was shut down at some point. We weren’t. We were

shut down one week, but we were not shut down, but the city has been shut down. My builder can’t get the (papers), things he needs in order to start doing the building. We’ve lost some of our storage space, so I don’t have the storage space to actually have the quote, unquote food drive that we normally have. The biggest portion of our food drive is our schools doing it which we love it but I don’t have a place to put it,” said Lee Now while they may not be leading the effort of a community wide food drive, Lee says she still expects folks to give plenty this holiday season. “I had two people call me this morning asking about doing local things (food drives) in the area and I can handle that. I can handle that type of quantity. I can handle that type of quantity two or three times a week because it’s going to come in the back and go right out the front. What I can’t handle is food that is going to sit there a couple of months. I don’t have the space. We are still asking the community to remember, even at the Blue Santa, to remember even at that point because, we can do that short turnaround. It’s the abundance of food at one time that I can’t handle right now,” said Lee. See CHRISTIAN CUPBOARD, page 2

Teen dies in weekend ATV accident (Guadalupe County) -- A juvenile has died following an ATV accident over the weekend in Guadalupe County. Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Investigators say the 17old male from Lockhart, was with two others when the accident happened. The victim was flown to Austin and was pronounced dead on arrival at Dell Children’s Hospital. The second male was also critically injured and flown to the area hospital.

Reports indicate that teen still remains hospitalized. The third occupant of that accident has since been treated and released. Investigators say deputies were called to the scene of the ATV crash on Saturday afternoon. The accident occurred on private property, located in the 1300 block of Kelly Road in the Luling area. Investigation into the accident continues.

Food pantry relying on more smaller, regular food contributions during holiday season CHRISTIAN CUPBOARD continued from page 1 Lee says she is proud of the local pantry for being able to keep its doors open during the pandemic. She says in addition to implementing safety guidelines, the cupboard, over these past months, has also been forced to change the way it serves its clients. She says that’s why it’s more important than ever to ensure that the food that comes in, makes its way into the hands of families who need it right away. “We were closed one week, and we weren’t closed because we didn’t have food. We were closed because the food bank closed to do inventory and I was afraid not to have enough food. That was at the time that people were emptying the shelves and so to ere on the side of caution, we closed for one week, one week only. During this pandemic, we had to actually think outside our box, and we do it. The last five years or so, we have done what we call client choice. People can come in, look at a list of items that we normally have and pick and choose what they need and don’t need. That’s kind of out the window at this point. We are doing pre-made boxes. We are trying to fill the need if someone says, fill in the blank and if we have it, we will give it to them. So, the boxes are kind of standard boxes. I don’t like that but that’s the best way we can serve people - getting them to the door and not allowing them in the building. We are meeting them at the door, and we are doing a turnaround as fast as we can,” said Lee. With still plenty of unknowns, Lee says she remains confident in the community and the cupboard’s ability to get through

this latest hurdle. “I want people to realize that your neighbor might not be asking you for something, but they are asking me for it. We all, at some point, need to keep our pride with what we have to function with. You don’t know the extent of the need at this point, but we have had people be very very generous like several people during the time of stimulus checks, to give us part of their check. I was shocked. But the need is

I want them to be comfortable in doing that because we will take it,” said Lee. Now in addition to food, Lee says the Christian Cupboard is also in need of other types of donations.

“If you want to put in some recyclable bags, the cloth kind, we love those. If you want to give us some toiletry items. Not too many people have traveled to get the travel size (products) from the different hotels and motels but if you have any personal items, we’ll take those and of course, laundry detergent. All of this is conducive to living and things that people actually need,” said Lee. Again, Lee hopes that her message to the community is clear. She says they are still taking donations. It’s just that the large scale food drive that happens every year won’t be hosted as usual. Courtesy Photo She says the Christian Cupboard there. As long as I am able to and the volunteers remains very important for the community. She that I have who are wonderful people - as long says other mass food distribution drives hosted as we are able to, we want to fill that need as in the community have not changed what the much as we can,” said Lee. local food pantry does on a daily basis. She says it only enhances its efforts. Plus, she says Despite the lack of space, Lee says the the Christian Cupboard helps provide those cupboard is still very much accepting non- foods not given away during those monthly perishable food items. She says whatever drives. someone is willing to give, the cupboard will be happy to accept. Donations to the Christian Cupboard are accepted Mondays through Thursdays “Cash or check are definitely appreciated and from 9 to 11 a.m. Food can also donated it’s lightweight. We can certainly use it but I 24/7 utilizing the cupboard’s drop off box don’t want people to be limited to just give located on the north side of its building at us money. If they desire to give actual food, 516 N. Camp St.

Navarro ISD invites the community to watch as it honors area veterans

(Geronimo) -- Saluting a veteran wherever you are will be made easy on Wednesday thanks to the Navarro ISD. The Navarro ISD will be hosting a live streaming of its annual Veterans Day Celebration. The celebration is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11 at the high school’s Erwin-Lee Field. Superintendent Wendi Russell says the district is excited about celebrating veterans with a program this year. “We would love to have every parent, every community member even from surrounding communities to join us live through live streaming simply because with some much turmoil between COVID and of course, the presidential race finding a way to honor those who have served to protect us and keep us safe and make

America what it is. We want to be able to honor them and we are honored to be able to do this among COVID as well,” said Russell. Russell says the district has been working on piecing together the program in hopes of honoring as many area veterans as possible. “We do have our staff members that are veterans that will be here and then we did reach out to the various community groups that we knew that had veterans. We reached out to all of them to join us and of course, we did advertise it on

our web page and on Facebook both and asked them if they wanted to come to just RSVP. So, (we) have several RSVPs as well. We also went a step above and for about three weeks now, we’ve been asking anyone in the community that had a veteran to send us a picture and information in. We are going to have a video that we are going to post on our webpage and on social media as well Due to the county’s capacity limitations for COVID-19, the district will not allow any extra community members or parents to attend the ceremony. A link to the ceremony can be found on the district’s website at nisd. us or on the Navarro ISD Facebook page. Again, the program begins at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Downtown Scavenger Hunt Scheduled for Small Business Saturday Special By Kyle Kramm, City of Seguin Main Street & CVB director

(Seguin) -- In a year where our small businesses have been struggling immensely, the celebration and promotion of Small Business Saturday has taken on a new level of importance for the City of Seguin. Small Business Saturday began in 2010 when American Express came up with the idea to celebrate small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Following Black Friday - one of the busiest shopping days of the year - Small Business Saturday is meant to remind people to Shop Small and support their local small businesses as they begin their holiday shopping. Each year, Seguin Main Street & CVB, Economic Development, the Seguin Chamber, the Seguin

Guadalupe County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the Downtown Business Alliance collaborate to promote Shop Local initiatives for Small Business Saturday, and 2020 will be no different.

A new addition to this year’s Small Business Saturday festivities will be the Downtown scavenger hunt. Participants will solve riddles leading them to participating downtown businesses. Once all clues have been solved, a complete holiday shopping guide will be unveiled providing ideas for the perfect gift item for everyone in your family. And the best part, all items will be from local small businesses! “We are very excited to provide a fun and interactive way to encourage locals to support small businesses,” said Kyle Kramm, Director of Main Street & CVB. “We have

so many incredible businesses with unique items that can take your holiday gifting to the next level.” This year, Small Business Saturday is on November 28, 2020. Starting at 10am, participants can pick up their clue sheet at participating businesses or download it from the Seguin Main Street Facebook page. The scavenger hunt will occur between 10am and 4pm. Once individuals have completed all clues, they can drop off their forms at a participating business to be entered in a drawing to win gift cards to local businesses. No purchase necessary. For more information on the scavenger hunt and other Small Business Saturday activities, follow Seguin Main Street on Facebook at <https://www.facebook.com/ SeguinMainStreet> or call (830) 401-5000.

Bulldogs pull away from Cole, punch ticket to UIL football playoffs

(Marion) - Marion jumped out to a big lead early and staved off a scrappy effort by San Antonio-Cole to secure the fourth and final playoff seed in District 14-3A-Division I with a 49-28 Senior Day win Saturday afternoon at Veterans Stadium. The Bulldogs used a 10-yard run by Aden Rackley and a pair of touchdown scampers by Tanner Beakley, including a 50-yarder, to build a 21-0 cushion by the end of the first quarter. The Cougars came storming back with consecutive scores to make it 21-14 in the second period, but Rackley’s second touchdown of the night put Marion up 28-14 at halftime. A five-yard run by Beakley set up by a Bryce Gonyer interception and a 24-yard touchdown pass from Beakley to Rackley stretched the margin to 42-14 by the end of the third period, and Cole came no closer than 14 points in the final frame. The win gives Marion a 5-5 overall record, a 3-3 district mark, and a bi-district playoff matchup with 9-0 Llano this Friday at Tivy’s Antler Stadium in Kerrville.

Miller said. “We wanted to make sure that our underclassmen played for our seniors, and our seniors wanted to leave a legacy of getting into the playoffs and winning a big home game in their last game here at Veterans Stadium. They showed up, and all of our players had a great game, and the Marion Bulldogs are back in the playoffs.”

Beakley completed 13 of his 16 passing attempts 81 percent - for 192 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He also ran for 88 yards and three scores. Rackley found the end zone three times, catching the 24-yard TD strike from Beakley and punching it in on runs of 10 and seven yards. Sophomore quarterback Dillon Sanchez replaced Beakley for a spell and performed well aside from an interception in the fourth quarter that allowed Cole to pull back within two touchdowns. Sanchez broke loose for a 20-yard touchdown run to cap the scoring with 4:53 left, finishing with 49 rushing yards on five carries and 59 passing yards on four completions. “We’ve been wanting to get Dillon Sanchez in,” Miller said. “He’s a sophomore, and we’ve been wanting to get him in all season, just haven’t had a really good opportunity, and we felt like we could

get him some reps, and he did a great job for us, and Tanner continues to get better every week, and he played great for us too.” Dominic Castellanos led the receivers with six catches for 75 yards. He also made an impact on field position with a 35-yard kick return and a 22-yard punt return. Samuel Montoya pulled in four receptions for 54 yards. Bryce Gonyer made an impact with his hands on both sides of the ball, coralling a deep throw from Sanchez set up a Marion touchdown, and collecting two of the Bulldogs’ four interceptions on the day. Dillon Blakely and Cameron Kistner each came up with a pick as well. “That’s exactly what we needed, and the defense has done a great job all season of creating turnovers,” Miller said. “ Juan Ortiz, the leading scorer in program history, made all seven of his PAT kicks in his final home game. Kickoff for this Friday’s bi-district playoff game against Llano at Antler Stadium in Kerrville is set for 7:30 p.m.

Carroll spent his professional life in the automobile business. One of his proudest accomplishments was establishing Carroll Barron’s Luling Chevrolet; he truly loved his team. While he and Sandy spent wonderful years in San Antonio, Seguin became their true home. It took no time for them to find St. James Catholic Church, where they were very active and made many great friends. Carroll was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3412 and served a term as Grand Knight. He was also very active in the Seguin Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He had many successes, but was most proud of his marriage to Sandy and the family they created. His joy in life was being with those he loved. From taking spontaneous road trips to the coast with his young family to the annual Christmas in July celebration with his growing family, Sonny cherished the adventures and shenanigans with his crazy crew! Their home on Lake McQueeney held a special place in his heart. Just relaxing on the back porch with Sandy or hosting family and friends at the Lake, he especially enjoyed the Fourth of July, decked out in red, white and blue. Our family will be forever grateful for the love and care provided by his caregiver, Khiana Hill. He loved her and considered
