Seguin, Guadalupe County to salute veterans during annual Veterans Day program By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
ceremony will still continue but it will be at our American Legion. So, we’re loaning them the hall in case of inclement weather,” said Ramirez. The Veterans Day Program in Seguin gets underway at 11 a.m. today at Veterans Park. The park is located at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Erkel Streets. Individuals are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs.
(Seguin) -- Don’t forget to thank a veteran. Today is Veterans Day. The Guadalupe Veteran’s Council hopes to safely gather today in recognition of all those who have served our country. Due to COVID-19, the traditional parade from downtown Seguin to Veterans Park will not happen. However, the group’s annual program at the park is still on as scheduled. Although a bit modified, Felisa Ramirez, the post commander for the American Legion Post #245, says today’s program will honor all those who have served the country in war or peace, dead or alive. “The veteran community is strong in this area but unfortunately in other areas of the country it isn’t and so we feel that anytime there is an opportunity to promote the positivity of being in the military even if you do just one enlistment -you served and you are a veteran and you contributed. I think you can’t forget those that obviously gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country but I think it’s important to recognize those that in whatever way possible, in whatever job that they did in the military, they contributed to what America is all about,” said Ramirez. Serving as this year’s guest speaker will be Major General U.S. Army (Retired) Jimmie Keenan. Ramirez says Keenan will share her message of thanks to veterans especially during these uncertain times. “She’s a retired nurse and she is what we can an MSN Officer so she has her master’s in nursing but she is also a veteran. We felt that it was important to still continue with our Veteran’s Day ceremony and our Guadalupe County Veteran’s Council was able to contact General Keenan and she agreed to make time
for us here in Seguin,” said Ramirez. Jeff Messinger, director of the American Legion Riders and first commander for the post, says although there will not be a parade, there will be a parade of Legion Riders on local streets just prior to the ceremony. “There is no official parade but our American Legion Riders from 245, we will be meeting at our post -- leaving our post at 10:30 and we will be riding over to Veterans Park with all of our big flags and everything,” said Messinger. Ramirez says safety will be key for all those who attend and hopes that folks will take the time to honor those who have served our country. “There will be masks required there at the park. Obviously, the little benches that are there. We can’t remove those. So, people will just have to use their discretion if they want to use those benches. But the bleachers that they use to bring in and the Porter Potties, those aren’t going to exist and it’s probably going to be a more condensed ceremony. They are estimating that it will probably last about 40 to 45 minutes. It’s a little bit shorter than it normally does. In case it rains that day, the
Kicking things off early this morning for area veterans will be the Navarro ISD. The Navarro ISD will be hosting a live streaming of its annual Veterans Day Celebration. The celebration is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. today at the high school’s Erwin-Lee Field. A link to the ceremony can be found on the district’s website at nisd.us or on the Navarro ISD Facebook page. Seguin ISD administrators will also be visiting campuses to deliver tokens of appreciation to those employees who are veterans. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Seguin High School Naval Jr. ROTC Program has also chosen to modify its annual Veteran’s Day program and limit close contact of students. The group plans to return to its traditional morning public presentation next year. The Seguin Kiwanis Club is also doing its part today to honor area veterans. For years, the group has recognized the sacrifices of America’s heroes with its flag program. Flags are hung during patriotic observances throughout the downtown area. The flags, today, will again be visible in celebration of Veteran’s Day. According to longtime member Ed Engelhardt, the flag route consist of East and West Court Streets plus portions of North and South Austin Streets. This includes around the Guadalupe County Courthouse and Central Park area.

Guadalupe County to offer COVID-19 testing plus flu shots this week By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Marion) --Free COVID-19 testing plus free flu shots will both be made available to Guadalupe County residents this week. First on the schedule is free COVID-19 testing in the city of Cibolo. Patrick Pinder, Guadalupe County Emergency management coordinator, says the testing will be on a first come, first serve basis this Thursday at Niemietz Park located in Cibolo at 618 FM 78. Pinder says testing will begin at 9 a.m. and will continue until 4 p.m. or until test kits run out. “The city of Cibolo reached out to my office and requested a testing site. They wanted to promote testing in their community so we contacted the state and had the state coordinate a testing location there at Niemietz Park off of FM 78 and this site is 100 percent free. You don’t have to have any signs, symptoms. You can come out and be tested similar to the 10 testing sites that we’ve had in the past. We do ask that people get there early so that we can guarantee that they do get tested. Tests are limited. They will only be testing a
certain number of people and the test are a first come, first serve basis. So, anyone in Guadalupe County that wants to come out and be tested,” said Pinder. Pinder says thanks to their partnership with the city of Schertz, county residents are also encouraged to protect themselves from the flu. He says free flu vaccines will be provided on
Saturday in the Marion Middle School parking lot from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. “Schertz EMS had acquired several free flu vaccines and they were doing flu vaccines in their community and since Schertz EMS is partnered with the county in our EMS contract, they wanted to extend that offer out to Guadalupe County so this Saturday on the 14th of November, they’ll be doing free flu vaccines at Marion Middle School. We’ll be set up in the parking lot,” said Pinder. Pinder says the hope is to have even more opportunities for residents to get their flu shot. “The city of Schertz, this is their third or fourth that they’ve hosted. There’s two additional sites coming up in the city of Schertz. We are currently working with Schertz EMS to try to get a location in the Seguin area. I talked to the school district today about trying to get a location at the high school or at the campus there,” said Pinder. Those planning to get their flu shot are asked to enter the Marion Middle School parking lot off of FM 465. The school is located at 506 FM 465.
Seguin ISD to offer COVID-19 testing to better tackle virus spread throughout schools By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Students and staff members who are forced into quarantine in the Seguin ISD may soon have better answers to when they can safely return to the classroom. That’s all thanks to approximately 1,500 rapid nose swab COVID-19 tests that have been provided to the district through the Texas Education Agency. Sean Hoffmann, chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says the district is currently developing a plan and process to administer the kits. On Tuesday, the district launched a pilot program specifically designed for students and staff who are in quarantine due to close contact at school. “Staff such as nurses, athletic trainers and administrators are receiving state mandated training to administer the tests. I hear that the test is not as intrusive as some of the other nose swab tests. I don’t think we will be tickling brains with these swabs. I don’t think they have to go in quite that far. Test results can be ready in about 15 minutes. Individuals tested receive a follow-up email with the results,” said Hoffmann. Students will not be tested without prior written consent from a parent or guardian. District officials say at this point, they would like to focus the testing on students and staff who are in quarantine or experiencing symptoms. Hoffmann says they working to implement the program as to maximize the
effectiveness in the schools.
“Data shows that students and staff who are in quarantine due to close contact in school are not coming up positive. We do post our data and update it regularly on our website. We include all of our COVID statistics as far as total number of positive cases, total number of negative cases and total of quarantine and what we have found is we’ve been in school since Sept. 8 so we’ve got about two months of data right now and we are finding that students who are in the same classroom or who have been around other students who are out quarantining because they are positive, we are finding that there is very little transmission to classmates. This is due to the safety protocols currently implemented in our schools and the diligence of our students and staff. We are considering allowing quarantine individuals to be voluntarily tested twice weekly so that they can return to school or work if test results are negative. If the test result is positive, the individual must follow our protocols for a positive case,” said Hoffmann. Hoffmann says the state has indicated that more test kits could be made available to the Seguin ISD should they need them. Currently, the Seguin ISD is reporting three positive COVID-19 cases among its students and two positive COVID cases among staff members. The Seguin ISD provides regular updates on COVID-19 cases throughout the district. The information is available on its website at seguinisd.net.

The family was very active at St. Luke’s Catholic Church where he and Sandy helped found the “Holy Family” family guild. His faith was his foundation and always a priority. Carroll spent his professional life in the automobile business. One of his proudest accomplishments was establishing Carroll Barron’s Luling Chevrolet; he truly loved his team. While he and Sandy spent wonderful years in San Antonio, Seguin became their true home. It took no time for them to find St. James Catholic Church, where they were very active and made many great friends. Carroll was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3412 and served a term as Grand Knight. He was also very active in the Seguin Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He had many successes, but was most proud of his marriage to Sandy and the family they created. His joy in life was being with those he loved. From taking spontaneous road trips to the coast with his young family to the annual Christmas in July celebration with his growing family, Sonny cherished the adventures and shenanigans with his crazy crew! Their home on Lake McQueeney held a special place in his heart. Just relaxing on the back porch with Sandy or hosting family and friends at the Lake, he especially enjoyed the Fourth of July, decked out in red, white and blue. Never one to turn down an adventure, Carroll and Sandy were blessed to visit many places throughout the world, making lasting memories. Our family will be forever grateful for the love and care provided by his caregiver, Khiana Hill. He loved her and considered
her a dear friend.
