Home Depot salutes area veterans with community project

a space to meditate and then we are also building a planter and bench for them to sit, look at flowers and that kind of stuff,” said Reed. In giving back, Reed says it was the store’s employees who did the honors by building the new space on Wednesday. “I have 10 Home Depot associates including myself, all volunteering. It is their day off. One of our values is giving back to our communities so they are living their values by giving back to their community and taking care of our veterans today,” said Reed.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – While veterans were being honored and recognized at this year’s Veteran’s Day Program in Seguin, a team of orange was hammering away at a very special surprise at Seguin’s American Legion Hall. In a salute to veterans all across the nation,

Home Depot in Seguin unveiled a new outdoor space for the veterans and members of the American Legion Post #245. Store Manager Tory Reed says the project is the least that Home Depot could do for such a deserving group of heroes. “Home Depot does projects for our veterans and

we are doing more also for our first responders due to COVID, responders, medical etc. But, being Veteran’s Day, we wanted to make sure our first project was going to be for veterans, so we are building a little tranquil space in the back with a fence. We are going to put a grill in there, a heater, some lighting so that they can have some meditation area for their vets that are suffering from PTSD that want to get

Felisa Ramirez, the commander for the American Legion, says she is so excited about the new fenced space created behind the local post. She says words can not describe the gratitude that she has for Home Depot and for its group of employees who volunteered their time. “This is an amazing project. I mean when community and the veteran organizations mesh up together, wonderful things happen. We are blessed that Home Depot, Tory Reed, their store manager, reached out to me and our organization to see what they could do. I mean, I really didn’t know what to ask for when they gave us ideas. What has transformed r our most, it’s an amazing thing. This bench planter is going to be used by veterans to come out here for a safe quiet area. That back area is going to be used for our PTSD, for meditating just to get away from the noise of the world. They donated this grill that we fired up today so that we could feed all our veterans that came in. They gave us some ceiling fans that we are going to install inside that is going to help with the airflow,” said Ramirez. See HOME DEPOT, page 2

Citizens encouraged to serve as acting soldiers during times of uncertainty WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – Messages being shared this Veteran’s Day should not only be for veterans but for all Americans. Sharing Seguin’s message during this year’s Veterans Day Program was Major General U.S. Army (Retired) Jimmie Keenan. Keenan was invited by the Guadalupe County Veterans Council to serve as this year’s guest speaker at Veterans Park. Keenan recently served the nation as Deputy Commanding General for the U.S. Army Medical Command and as Chief of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. In her message to all, General Keenan reminds citizens that you cannot have an America without veterans. “What I want to tell our veterans today is thank you for your service, for your sacrifice to our country. We know through the VA that there’s over 17 and half million veterans right now that they serve and there’s even more out there and it really is a message of ‘we want to thank you today but we should be thanking you everyday’ because you donned the cloth of our nation when many others wouldn’t and for the sacrifices that you gave for our country so that we have the freedoms that we have today to protest, to have elections. We take all of that for granted because we don’t realize what

enables us to have those freedoms and it’s our service members who selflessly have served our country and their families who stood there beside them,” said Keenan. It’s during these times of uncertainty that Keenan also believes that the word “united” is more important than ever. She says the country has been under attack by COVID-19 and believes we all play the role of a solider. “What we have to do is understand that this country was found on principles and freedoms and that right now, what we all need to do is be uplifting each other and taking care of each other. COVID is very dangerous. I’m a nurse. I have patients across Texas and Florida and I have patients here in Seguin and we are so concerned about making sure that we are all doing what we need to do to take care of not only our veterans but each other, reaching out and making sure that people have what they need whether it’s food, whether it’s medication or just somebody to talk to because when you are isolating, if you have a high risk condition, which is important to do, it can be very lonely so taking the time to reach out to your neighbors, to reach out to your friends, to reach out to someone that you may not normally connect with to see if they need anything -- that’s what we all need to be doing is supporting each other,” said Keenan. Even as politics works to divide us, Keenan believes that everyone has a

responsibility to keep moving forward. “I think we have to remember that we are all in this together and that again, our country was founded on freedom, the right for speech, for free speech and that even when we don’t agree on necessarily the same policies, that we can all come together because we are all Americans,” said Keenan. Throughout her military career, Keenan has also served as chief of staff for the U.S. Army Warrior Transition Command at the Pentagon, commanding general of the U.S. Army Public Health Command in Maryland and as the commanding general of the U.S. Army Southern Regional Medical Command. Keenan currently serves as the senior vice president for Enterprise Clinic Operations, WellMed Medical Management. Although this year’s Veteran’s Day Program was modified and did not include the community parade, organizers say this year’s event saw a large turnout. They also thank those who took the ime out of their schedule to attend this year’s program. See MORE PHOTOS to STORY page 3

U.S. Army Major General shares message to all during Veteran’s Day Program

American Legion gifted with Veteran’s Day surprise HOME DEPOT, continued from page 1 As store manager, Reed says it’s community partnerships like these that help her appreciate her role with

the company even more. “For me, myself, a military brat, my dad was in the army for 30 something years and so military is my heart and we wanted to make sure that we were doing something that veterans going forward would have to see and to have a fence is permanent. We don’t want recognition that it came from the Home Depot. That’s not what we are here for. We are just here to let them know that there is people in their community that

care about what they have done for our country and what they continue to do for our country,” said Reed. For years, Home Depot has been recognized for assisting the needs of its employees who are veterans. This year, the company launched a new program that will guarantee employment opportunities to associates who are spouses of relocating members of the military. The company has also

helped with housing for its veteran employees – even surprising some with their mortgage payments. This year, Home Depot was recognized as a 2021 Top Military Friendly company for the 19th year in a row.

Panthers look to avenge Week 4 loss to Gobblers in bi-district playoffs, Thursday game to air on KWED (Karnes City) - Navarro and Cuero face each other for the second time this season when the two Region IV powerhouses square off in the 4A Division II bi-district playoffs Thursday evening at Karnes City’s Poss Johnson Field. Cuero stunned the Panthers 42-21 at Gobbler Stadium to snap

an 0-3 start to the season on Sept. 18, in Week 4. Thursday marks the 10th meeting between the programs over the past eight seasons, and the seventh playoff clash in that span. The Gobblers are 7-2 in the previous nine matchups, 6-1 in the post-season.

Navarro’s only playoff win in the rivalry was a 35-21 triumph in the 2016 4A Region IV finals. Cuero has continued to play well under first-year head coach Jack Alvarez since defeating Navarro eight weeks ago. The Gobblers are 5-5 overall and went 3-2 in District 13-4A-Division II to end up with the fourth playoff seed. Cuero defeated district champion Navasota 38-21, but dropped close games to Giddings, 35-31, and Smithville, 29-27. Navarro is undefeated since the September setback to Cuero. The Panthers take an 8-2 record into the playoffs after a 5-0 run to the District 14-4A-Division II chamionship in Rod Blount’s third season as head coach. The final district win was a COVID-related forfeit by San Antonio-YMLA. The last time Navarro took the field was Friday, Oct. 30 in a 58-14 non-district win over Houston Christian. The playoff rematch will require each team to account for some key players who didn’t factor in the Week 4 outcome. Navarro played without starting safety James Brinsley, one of the team’s best athletes in the secondary, and All-District linebacker Andrew Guerra. Cuero capitalized on those absences with multiple big plays en route to 215 rushing yards and 167 passing yards.

Sam Muniga (13) and his Navarro teammates look for a better result against Exavier Durham (4) and the Cuero Gobblers in the first round of the playoffs after coming up short in the September meeting. Photo by Jacqueline Springs.

The Gobblers’ Breck Eleby was still part of a quarterback competition eight weeks ago and didn’t play elsewhere on the field. Jerry Rossett locked down the job that night by going 12-17 for 167 yards.

Eleby has since played the bulk of his snaps at running-back or receiver, totaling 544 rushing yards, 364 receiving yards on 23 catches, and 10 total touchdowns, so he is an additional weapon that Navarro defensive coordinator Kris Cavazos will game plan for this week. Navarro’s statistical leaders on offense include senior tailback Sam Muniga (904 rush yds., 9 TD, 188 rec. yds., 3 TD), junior halfback Brody Whitson (9 rush TDs), and junior quarterback Nick Billings (576 pass yds., 14 total TDs). As a team, the Panthers’ Slot-T attack has racked up averages of 49.4 points and 436.7 total yards per game, and 8.3 yards per carry on rushing plays. The defense has excelled in the take-away department, recovering 17 fumbles and collecting 11 interceptions for a total of 28 forced turnovers. Sam Muniga and Aden Supak have each coralled three interceptions. The afforementioned Rossett has completed 56 percent of his passes for 1,321 yards, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions since winning Cuero’s QB job. Exavier Durham (27 rec., 421 yds., 4 TD) has been his top receiver. Three of the Gobblers’ running-backs have topped 500 rushing yards - Tycen Williams (579, 4 TD), Eleby (544 yds., 5 TD), and Jackson Hardwick (519 yds., 8 TD). Williams ran for 173 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries to with 48 receiving yards and a score in the Week 4 game against Navarro. Thursday’s kickoff in Karnes City is slated for 7 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:30.

SCOTUS Decision On Repeal Of Obamacare Could Be Months Away (Washington, DC) -- It appears a majority of the Supreme Court is not willing to strike Obamacare down. The nine justices heard arguments Tuesday from Republican-led states that claimed the landmark healthcare law was no longer valid because Congress removed the individual mandate. Conservatives John Roberts and Brett Kavanaugh joined the three liberal justices in expressing doubts that it was up to the courts to remove a law Congress passed, instead of lawmakers themselves. Samuel Alito also expressed some doubts to the case Republicans argued. US Sets New Daily Record For COVID Cases (Undated) -- The U.S. is setting another grim record during the coronavirus pandemic. Numbers from the COVID Tracking Project show nearly 131-thousand new infections were recorded on Tuesday, the highest daily count yet. Plus, the country set another record with over 61-thousand Americans in the hospital because of the virus. That includes 17 states setting their own single-day hospitalization records. America also experienced its deadliest day from the illness since August 19th, with the Tracking Project noting over 13-hundred people died Tuesday. Dr. Fauci Advocates For More Testing On Asymptomatic People (Washington, DC) -- The nation’s top infectious disease expert is advocating for more coronavirus testing to be done on people that don’t have symptoms. Dr. Anthony Fauci [[ FOW-chee ]] tells MSNBC more needs to be known about the asymptomatic spread of the virus. Fauci insisted people

He said that’s because as the weather gets cooler, people stay indoors and do more things there compared to outside. World Health Organization Investigates Handling Of COVID-19 Pandemic (Geneva, CH) -- An independent group is investigating how the World Health Organization responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. Former Prime Minister of New Zealand, Helen Clark, said her group wants to understand when COVID-19 first appeared in China. Clark said based on the findings, the aim is to come up with a set of recommendations aimed at enabling the world to do better the next time a virus emerges. China has been criticized by US intelligence for not coming forward quickly enough with knowledge of the virus and for withholding accurate infection rates and deaths. Romaine Lettuce Recalled Because of E. Coli (Undated) -- Check that romaine lettuce in your fridge because it could make you sick. The FDA says the Tanimura and Antle brand packages of single head lettuce have been recalled because of possible E. coli contamination. It was sold at Walmart stores in 19 states and Puerto Rico. The family was very active at St. Luke’s Catholic Church where he and Sandy helped found the “Holy Family” family guild. His faith was his foundation and always a priority. Carroll spent his professional life in the automobile business. One of his proudest accomplishments was establishing Carroll Barron’s Luling Chevrolet; he truly loved his team. While he and Sandy spent wonderful years in San Antonio, Seguin became their true home. It took no time for them to find St. James Catholic Church, where they were very active and made many great friends. Carroll was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3412 and served a term as Grand Knight. He was also very active in the Seguin Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. Sonny cherished the adventures and shenanigans with his crazy crew!

Interment with military honors will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery.

Their home on Lake McQueeney held a special place in his heart. Just relaxing on the back porch with Sandy or hosting family and friends at the Lake, he especially enjoyed the Fourth of July, decked out in red, white and blue. Never one to turn down an adventure, Carroll and Sandy were blessed to visit many places throughout the world, making lasting memories. Our family will be forever grateful for the love and care provided by his caregiver, Khiana Hill. He loved her and considered her a dear friend. Carroll believed dying would be his greatest adventure. He always said he looked forward to his last great adventure and being with Jesus Christ.

All CDC protocols must be followed at both locations, including social distancing and face coverings worn. Marvin is preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Marian Krueger Strey, and his parents.
