Free healthcare for all students On-demand doctor visits now available for each Seguin ISD student
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – Seguin ISD families no longer have to worry over the stress that comes with having a sick child. That’s because the district has announced its new ondemand doctor visits for students right inside each of its campuses. Not only does it eliminate a family’s worry or inconvenience of having to make a doctor’s appointment, but the program allows students to be treated for free right there at their own school. Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, explains this new student health service being made available in partnership with Hazel Health. “The way it works is that students will have access to virtual doctor visits through
the school nurse’s office and through these virtual visits, doctors can evaluate a student’s symptoms and provide an appropriate type of treatment and recommend that to the nurse and then to the parents as well. If a child is sick at home, the child’s parent or guardian can access Hazel Health doctors again online from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on school days,” said Hoffmann. Today, is the first day that parents can opt into the program by signing the consent forms that are necessary to access this service. A link to those documents should have already been sent to the parents via the email on file. If not, they are encouraged to visit my.hazel.com/Seguin. Hoffmann says the virtual doctor visits will be available to all students no matter the family’s ability to pay for outside health coverage. See SEGUIN ISD, page 3

Parks officials looking to fill available spots as soon as possible By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – You’re invited to be a part of history as the city of Seguin begins recruitment of entries for its 30th Annual Holiday Stroll Parade. History will be in the making on Thursday, Dec. 3rd as the city prepares to still host a live parade but with several significant changes amid the COVID-19 pandemic. As reported earlier, Lindsay Hajek, recreation superintendent for the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department, says not only has the location for the parade changed but so has its entire format. She says that’s why it’s even more important for groups to sign up their holiday floats as soon as possible for this new drive through experience. “The Holiday Stroll Parade will go on. Of course, there are many differences this year. We are switching it up. It’s going to be a drive through experience through Starcke Park. However, the floats that will not change very much. They will just be stationary floats. They will be parked on a designated route through Starcke Park where our spectators can drive through and still be able to see the holiday cheer, see the organizations on their decorated and lighted entries. They’ll just pass by and our entries will wave as they go through, and we do have a designated area for our spectators to drive through. Currently,
we are really working on getting our community involved with our parade entries. We have currently 13 entries. Our goal for the best drive through experience is 49 entries so we have quite a way to go. We just want to fill that entire path and make it as decorated and as beautiful and holiday spirited as possible. So, if any of our community, our organizations, our clubs, our groups want to come out and decorate, we need people to participate and get their entry to us,” said Hajek. Hajek says preserving a holiday tradition for the city was especially important this year and believes the city has found “the way” to safely make it all happen. “In the planning process just to share a little more information, we have been doing this, the city has been doing this since the 90’s and we didn’t want a break in that tradition. This is actually the 30th annual parade so we want to make sure that it happens, and we found a way to make it as safe as possible. We want the community to know as well that there will be social distancing in place. We have spread out. We have plans where we will place the entries. We spread distance between each entry. We are encouraging only 10 people to be on the entry, itself, on the float and of course, we will wear masks and practice all those safety standards that we are so used to doing by now,” said Hajek.
At this point, Hajek says it looks like Seguin will be one of the few if not the only community in the area to host a live holiday parade. But luckily, Hajek says Seguin not only had the layout but also the know how to help make such a memorable event happen. “We think that this is definitely a unique idea. We have a great parks system that has kind of a perfect one-way path to go through and that’s kind of where the idea originated. A lot of different communities are doing just virtual events like virtual tree lightings maybe virtual Christmas, Santa experiences kind of thing but this is a chance to actually get out in the community but you get to stay in the safety of your own vehicle so there’s definitely unique experiences here in Seguin so it’s a little different than what other communities are doing and we want to make it the best that we can,” said Hajek.
Hajek says all types of community groups are encouraged to participate. She says this year’s parade is definitely one for the experience. “The entry fee is free. There is no entry fee to participate. It can be any community organization, a group, a club, an elected official – any organization that wants to participate. We have businesses that come out. We have schools that come out so any community organization. We even have organizations from outside our community. We have someone coming out from Flatonia so it’s not limited to just Seguin entries,” said Hajek. Hajek says signing up for the parade is easy and encourages groups to secure one of the limited spots as soon as possible. “We have those available on our website at seguintexas.gov/parksandrecreation and we do have a deadline for entry and it’s Tuesday, Nov. 24 so it’s very important that everybody meets that deadline so we can get everything finalized but we are going to ask for information just your basic contact information, the size of your entry, will you play music and just a little bit more information about your entry so that our announcers can give a little bit more when we do our live feed on the day of the event,” said Hajek. The lighted night parade will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday Dec. 3 at Max Starcke Park. The parade will also be available via live stream on the city’s Facebook page. Applications for float entries can be found on the city’s website, seguintexas.gov under the parks and recreation tab. Again, the deadline to enter is Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Seguin ISD launches new virtual doctor visits through Hazel Health
SEGUIN ISD continued from page 1
“This is in no way trying to exclude physicians that our students physically visit. This is actually designed to complement that and also create an opportunity for those families who may not have the means or the resources to go through a family physician with a physical doctor visit. So, again it’s utilizing technology and utilizing the ability to do a Teladoc type of system and through the school nurse and again through our families – our students, we want to make they have that healthcare that they need,” said Hoffmann. Hoffmann says the district is excited about offering this free program and believes Hazel Health is the first step in making sure that the medical needs of students are addressed immediately. “It is new to Seguin ISD and for years, historically if a student is sick in school, that student goes to the school nurse and the nurse will work with that student and then the phone call goes to the parent and then the parent comes and picks the student up. It’s up to the parent to follow up with that particular healthcare issue but with Hazel Healthcare, if a parent opts into the program, that student can get immediate attention once he or she goes to the nurse’s office. It’s that extra step and ease that burden on the parent in order to have that health evaluation done in the nurse’s office. It
is something new and again, we think our families and our students are going to appreciate the opportunity to participate with Hazel Health,” said Hoffmann. Although the virtual doctor visits are expected to play a vital role for the district as it works through a pandemic, H o f f m a n n confirms that the vision for this program was put into motion way before. “We are always looking on how we can best benefit our students within our school system and our families and what we can do for them to help them and provide assistance and Hazel Health and the district began talking about this. We realize that it would be a great fit for our families and really it wasn’t a COVID induced partnership. It was something that we looked at and felt that we wanted to partner so we could offer this service to families because nobody benefits having a child sick at home and we feel that with this program, parents can get a diagnosis, also prescriptions as needed and get our kids well and back in school. That’s kind of what we are here for, so we felt that it was a win-win not only for our students and families but for our school district,” said Hoffmann. The virtual doctor visits officially begin today throughout the Seguin ISD. However, parents must sign the consent forms before any health services can be provided to their child.

Micah Rodriguez threw touchdown passes of 28 and 34 yards to Tristan Moreno, and 23 yards to fullback Michael Martinez. Marques Washington ran for touchdowns of seven and 10 yards. Linebackers John Michael Mata and Allen Martinez each found the end zone once as running-backs in the goal-line package, with a 47-yard connection from Rodriguez to Moreno setting up Mata’s score. The Matadors turned all four of those into points. “The defense did a great job of getting the football, getting some takeaways,” Bush said. “The offense did a great job of capitalizing on those, and just executing overall, for the night.” Seguin’s backups produced the final 19 points of the game. Junior running-back Jerivan Contreras punched in a pair of five-yard runs for the final two scores in the fourth quarter. Falgout intentially kneeled down on each of the ensuing conversion tries. Bush complimented his reserves for making the most of their opportunities with the game in hand. “Those guys need to bet in ballgames, need to get reps, and there’s no substitue for live action and game experience” the coach said. “So to get those guys in was huge, and they played well as well. They executed, they moved the ball down the field on offense, and then the defense held their own and kept them out of the end zone.”
