Free f lu shot clinic scheduled Resumes now being accepted for Navarro ISD school board seat for this Thursday in Seguin By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Geronimo) – Despite just having a school board election three weeks ago, the Navarro ISD is still facing a couple of vacancies on its board of trustees. Those openings have now led the district to fill the positions by appointment. Whitney Magness, the communications officer for the Navarro ISD, says the first position is that of newly elected trustee Katherine Ewald. Although publicly declining the seat just prior to appearing on the Nov. 3 ballot, Ewald still managed to be the top vote getter in the race. Magness says the second available seat is that of Board Vice President Rick Martin who suddenly passed away in August.
“When we canvassed the votes, they read Mrs. Ewald’s letter declining the position at this time and so moving forward we now have two vacancies that we have to fill. The Navarro Board of Trustees will be taking resumes for these two vacancies and both seats will actually serve on the board until the November 2022 regular board election and so we’ve asked all interested applicants to email their resumes to our current Board President Greg Gilcrease at greg.gilcrease@nisd.us and the deadline to submit them is Nov. 27 at shots will be administered this Thursday afternoon noon,” said Magness. in the Seguin ISD District Office parking lot. Magness says the hole left behind by Martin Pinder says he applauds the success of a similar drive has extremely been difficult for the entire Navarro community. She says the district thru clinic held this past weekend in Marion. See FREE FLU SHOT page 3 realizes it has big shoes to fill.
Over 120 people took advantage of this past weekend’s free flu clinic at Marion Middle School. A similar clinic will be held this Thursday in Seguin. By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Guadalupe County is partnering with the Seguin ISD to help you protect yourself against the flu bug. Patrick Pinder, the Guadalupe County emergency management coordinator, says free flu
“Its been very hard for the district, for the board, for teachers and loved ones, for the whole community really. Rick has been a true member of this community for a long time and losing him definitely hurt. You can just tell being at board meetings. It’s a different atmosphere because he was always cracking jokes and being engaging and also asking very thoughtful questions and always wanting to do what was best for kids and so we will be appointing someone to fill that role,” said Magness. Magness say anyone wanting to be considered for a seat is encouraged to submit their resume by next week’s deadline. “What will actually happen is the board as a whole will review all of the resumes that were sent in and then decide who they would like to speak with and basically interview and then from there, we’ll pull out who they would like to fill and so they’ll review those resumes at the next board meeting,” said Magness. The decision to move forward by appointment was made during Monday night’s meeting of the Navarro ISD Board of Trustees. The oath of office was also administered at that time for the other newly reelected members of the Navarro ISD Board of Trustees. They include Trustees Renee Rehfeld and Clinton Scheib. Again, resumes should be emailed by Nov. 27 to greg.gilcrease@nisd.us. See PHOTOS, page 2

COVID-19 cases slightly up in Guadalupe County By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Guadalupe County) -- Guadalupe County is reporting a slight uptick in the number of positive COVID-19 cases. Patrick Pinder, the Guadalupe County emergency management coordinator, says the latest numbers are slightly above what has been reported these last few weeks. “We got a pretty good increase in numbers yesterday (Monday) from DSHS. (Monday) they submitted 70 total active cases, to us. Those numbers included the cities of New Braunfels with three confirmed cases. Cibolo with eight cases. Seguin 20
cases, Schertz four cases, Marion one case and in the unincorporated areas of the county 11 cases. So, that shows 47 confirmed COVID cases and then we have the probable active category and those are in those respective jurisdictions, New Braunfels has three, Cibolo has 11, Seguin has five, Schertz has seven, Marion zero, Selma zero and in the unincorporated area of the county (we have) seven. So that’s 33. So, we have a total of 80 active cases of COVID currently in Guadalupe County which is up since last week a little bit so we are beginning to see those state numbers come up a little bit,” said Pinder.
As for the hospitalizations, Pinder on Tuesday morning had reported to the court four hospitalizations but by the end of the day, that number had doubled to eight. Pinder reports the seven day moving average for hospitalizations is still less than one per day. The number of deaths in Guadalupe County according to Pinder also currently remains at 46. However, he says that number is expected to be higher once the state updates its information. The Texas Department of State Health Services webpage currently reports a total of 79 deaths in the county.
Guadalupe County officials continue to urge residents to use common sense when it comes to protecting themselves against the virus. The latest reports have the nation’s hospitals being pushed to the limit with the current surge in coronavirus cases. The COVID Tracking Project reports more than 73,000 Americans were being treated in hospitals Monday for COVID-19. Officials say that’s a record. Cases are up in every state except Georgia, and there were more than a million new infections in the U.S. last week. There have been more than 100,000 new infections every day since November 4th.

(Seguin) -- Seguin ISD parents are invited to learn more tonight about the school district’s new student health initiative, Hazel Health. The virtual doctor visits that are now available in the schools will be the topic at hand for the first in a series of Seguin ISD Empowerment meetings. District officials say the Parent Empowerment meetings are for such things that might need a little bit more explaining or that are totally new for the district and their families. District officials say all Seguin ISD parents are encouraged to attend the virtual meeting tonight to learn more about these new and free doctor visits for all Seguin ISD students. Through Hazel Health,
District officials say the virtual doctor visits are available to all students no matter the family’s ability to pay for outside health coverage. The new on demand doctor service will also be made available to families between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
students can access one on one doctor visits in the comforts of their own school and nurse’s office. As reported earlier this week, sign-up for

Guadalupe County to administer free flu shots in Seguin ISD District Office parking lot FREE FLU SHOT continued from page 1 “We’ve teamed up with Schertz. We did a flu clinic this last Saturday at Marion Middle School. We had 126 people come through and get a free flu vaccine. We just did a little bit of advertising and we put some signs up on 78 and 465 and anybody that was driving by was able to drive through it and get a free flu shot,” said Pinder.
“We’ve worked with Seguin ISD so we will be doing that same thing at Central Office this Thursday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. They are free shots. Schertz EMS paramedics will be doing the flu vaccine and we also asked Seguin EMS to participate and they have agreed so we’ll have some paramedics out there giving those flu shots so hopefully, we can get the community to come out and get their flu shot,” said Pinder.
Pinder says the county will again work with Schertz EMS this Thursday. He says the flu vaccines are free and available to any county resident.
With flu season upon us, Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher says he is appreciative for these efforts in working to control any potential flu outbreak in the community. He says these
types of measures will prove to be even more important this year. “Thank you for working with everybody to put on the flu shot clinics. I think that’s a big benefit. It’s the right thing to do and just thank you for being engaged,” said Kutscher. Flu shots will be administered to those ages six months and up. All children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Seguin ISD District Office parking lot is located at 1221 E. Kingsbury St.

CDC Panel Meeting Next Week On COVID Vaccine Distribution (Washington, DC) -- The CDC isn’t wasting time preparing millions for a coronavirus vaccine. A panel will meet for five hours next Monday to decide who should get a shot first. One member says there’s no doubt healthcare heroes will be front in line. After that, it’s about listing the order of essential workers and rating high-risk groups. Moderna and Pfizer expect to apply for emergency approval soon for their vaccines after both have proven to be quite effective. Experts say widespread distribution though likely won’t happen until spring. Report: One Million Children Have Had Coronavirus (Undated) -- The youngest victims of coronavirus are being hit harder than most realize. More than one million children have been infected since the pandemic began. That includes nearly 112-thousand just last week. It’s all in a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association. The president of the AAP calls the number “staggering and tragic.” She says they haven’t had a virus move this fast since before vaccines began for measles and polio. Pediatricians believe even more children are likely infected but not reported since the illness is often mild in kids. COVID Hospitalizations Top 70,000 For First Time (Undated) -- The surging number of coronavirus cases across the U.S. is sending more people to the hospital. The COVID Tracking Project says there’s more than 73-thousand current hospitalizations

because of the virus as of Monday. That’s the most since the pandemic began and the first time hospitalizations have crossed 70-thousand. The U.S. just passed 60-thousand for the first time last Tuesday. Iowa Governor Issues Statewide Mask Mandate (Des Moines, IA) -- Iowa’s governor is telling residents to mask up. Kim Reynolds signed a proclamation requiring everybody aged two years and older to wear face coverings starting Tuesday. It applies to public indoor areas where social distancing isn’t possible for more than 15 minutes. It doesn’t include those eating and drinking while dining, medical disabilities that keep those from donning a mask or people taking part in religious services. The order will also force dining establishments, bowling alleys, arcades and some other businesses to shut down at ten p.m. for indoor guests. Fish Oil Study Suggests It Doesn’t Protect The Heart (Los Angeles, CA) -- A new study suggests fish oil really doesn’t protect against heart problems. Researchers at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles say that’s the bottom line after tracking over 25-thousand adults who took Omega-3 fish oil or a placebo over a five-year period. A second study from the Cleveland Clinic involving 13-thousand heart patients found similar results. Scientists concluded fish oil supplements failed to lower the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Mayor Victor Contreras update; Hello Marion, I hope you are all doing well and gearing up for the holidays. Just remember to take every precaution to make them safe. The election is over and we will be canvassing the votes and certifying the count on the 16 th of November. It was an extremely close race and we were fortunate to have had four very experienced and enthusiastic candidates to choose from. I welcome back the new and incumbent council members, we can now concentrate our efforts on running the city to the best of our abilities. We have seated a Planning and Zoning Committee, the officers will be as follows, Chairman Jeffery Patterson, Vice-chairman Catherine Lindquist, Secretary Renee Zunker and member Yomi Ajasin. They will be taking the P&Z responsibility away from the City Council, in the absence of a P&Z the council had those duties.
15
WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM
They will be another set of eyes and ears to review our ordinances and listen to presentations from our citizens and developers. In the meeting former P&Z Chair Councilman Chris McClain gave the committee an overview of what is expected from them. If you have a little time on your hands and want to be a part of shaping the City of Marion please stop by the City Hall and apply. We have an opening for one more committee member but you must live within the Marion city limits. Grant opportunity; CDBG- MIT grant application has been completed, turned in and now the waiting game begins. I keep these potential improvements in my mind every day and pray we are one of the City’s that are allotted the funds, this will be great for the City of Marion’s infrastructure needs. These are federal Government Land Office funds from the Hurricane Harvey Mitigation process. During Harvey the city experienced a lack of water and also experienced some adverse situations with our
sewer system. We can only use these funds for specific items associated with the Harvey Mitigation. I presented to the Council the final part of the process that I have been working on since early July of this year. This has been at least a four month long project to get to this point, it started with the idea of instead of paying an estimated $440,000 to just repair a portion of our sewer plant but be able to do a great deal more for our infrastructure needs. If we are approved we will be able to cover those costs for less than a fourth of that cost. The first step was to write up the Request for Proposal and Request for Qualifications and select the Grant-writer and the Engineering firm from those companies that applied, a side note these companies won’t be paid unless we are awarded the grant. The next step was to work with them and come up with a viable plan that would have a positive impact for the majority of our citizens.I believe we have such a plan, I am going to think positive and once we are selected to receive the grant we will be able to replace the sewer head works, upgrade the sewer plant, replace a few sewage lines (Seidel, Meadow Dr. and N. Cunningham near Sun Flower Dr. and some alleyways in the city) replace some of the Manholes and all the Manhole
covers. With replacing those lines the applicable roads would have to be redone. We will also be able to have a more constant pressure in our water system by building a new 500,000 gallon water tower as well as bringing in a new 12 inch diameter water main from the Wagner station, the line will be located on the South end of town. This is a short explanation of what we could accomplish with the $10,000,000 that will cost the city ($100,000), that is 1% of the total which is not an everyday occurrence normally the entity’s contribution can be as high as 50%. I want to thank the council in believing in the project and voting in a motion to approve each part of it. Now as I have said already we have to wait and see if we are approved in January or February of 2021. I am looking for more grant opportunities to improve the city and help our citizens. Please practice your “Social Distancing”, use your face masks, wash your hands with water and if not available use your hand sanitizers. Have a Great Marion Texas Day! Mayor Victor A. Contreras
