Cleaning up the streets of Seguin

This was the scene of South Austin Street just in front of the Burnt Bean restaurant early Friday early afternoon. City officials say first responders were dispatched to the area of Donegan and Austin Streets after a dump truck driver noticed smoke coming from the back of their vehicle. To ensure safety, the truck’s materials were unloaded onto the roadway where the fire department quickly extinguished the fire. Officials say no one was injured. The street, however, was closed for a few hours. Photo by Jarred Kindles.

DANGEROUS INTERSECTION

(Guadalupe County) -- If you ask Guadalupe County Commissioner Pct. 4 Stephen Germann, there is “indeed” light at the end of the tunnel.

For Germann, that light comes in the form of a traffic signal that is now on its way up at the FM 1044 and FM 78 intersection just east of Marion.

For months, Germann has spent much of his time urging that the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) seriously consider moving up its plan to install a traffic-control signal at that intersection. Germann says over the years, that intersection has been witness to a record number of accidents – accidents all involving, vehicles, big rigs and even trains.

“When I was running for office and I took office in January of last year, people were already telling me if you get elected, please work on this and yes, I do drive that intersection

myself and my family does too so we already knew it was an issue but what really got it to the forefront was when I started getting the traffic queries and realizing that we were averaging collision somewhere around every two to three weeks so that really put it to the forefront. We’ve got to do something here.

TLU to host education fair this week for surrounding ISDs

University to help folks get their credentials for the classroom

(Seguin) – Do you aspire to work in an area school district? Do you have little or no experience? Do you want to know what it takes to work in the classroom?

Those interested in working in the field of education are invited to attend an Education Career Fair at Texas Lutheran University this Wednesday. Numerous school districts with full- and part-time job openings will be in attendance, including Navarro, Seguin, San Marcos, Waelder, Comal, Somerset, Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City, Northeast, Judson, La Vernia, East Central, Gonzales, Bastrop, Nixon-Smiley Consolidated ISD, and St. James Catholic School.

Those who are not certified educators should still plan to attend. “There will be various jobs available— some that require a degree and a teaching certification, while other districts will hire someone with a degree who would be able to participate in an alternative certification program,” says Dr. Donna Kubena, Director of Field

Experience and Student Teachers and Director of the Alternative Certification Program at TLU. Kubena will be on hand at the fair with information about the TLU Alternative Certification Program for those who would like more information.

University students of all majors are encouraged to attend as well, since school districts hire more than just teachers. “In addition to teaching positions, there could potentially be other openings within the district that may or may not require a bachelor’s degree and/or are outside of a classroom.”

Kubena notes that schools also hire instructional assistants, tutors, nurses, after-school program attendants, and more.

The fair will take place on Wednesday from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in Tschoepe Hall’s Dunne Conference Center (Room 115). Public parking is available at Beck Center. The event is free and open to all.

Head Start classroom appeal scheduled for today

CCSCT provides latest update on local classroom

(Seguin) -- It was only a short time away from class for a group of 3-year-olds.

Last month, the Seguin Daily News reported that the Community Council of South-Central Texas’s Head Start Program was forced to shut down one of its classes due to funding issues on the national level.

CCSCT Executive Director Bobby Deike reported that funding cuts resulted in the Head Start Office’s decision to change the enrollment number that it was willing to fund. That led to the closing of one of its classes at its center located on North Austin Street.

Earlier this month, however, Deike said the class was allowed to welcome back students at least until the CCSCT gets a response from its appeal to the main office.

“The formal letter with the reduction in funding and the reduction in enrollment is on hold until our hearing Nov. 18 is when our hearing is scheduled and then the office of Head Start has 30 days from the date of the hearing to make their final determination on funded enrollment and funding level for CCSCT so the classroom will remain open. We are estimating until Dec 18. If our appeal is granted which includes full funding for that classroom and those families, then we will be able

to keep the class open for the remainder of the program year. If the office of Head Start denies our appeal, then we will have to close the classroom at that time,” said Deike.

Deike says the original news from Head Start was a complete surprise. He says there was no warning from the federal office in anyway.

Nonetheless, CCSCT officials say they are excited to have the kids back in the classroom and hope to be as supportive as they can with families throughout this process.

Seguin ISD Town Hall meeting to address bullying set for TONIGHT

(Seguin) – Seguin ISD families are reminded about tonight’s Town Hall Meeting Last week, the school district emailed a letter inviting families to the town hall meeting which will consider and begin the dialogue of some very tough issues.

In that letter, the school district states,” Seguin ISD is aware of incidents involving district students that have been featured in local media. Federal laws and district policies surrounding student privacy prevent us from discussing the cases with the public. However, the district can address its practices and procedures

surrounding student safety.”

Officials say the district takes all reports of bullying seriously and has protocols to investigate them, and – when applicable — determine disciplinary consequences and/or criminal steps to follow. These protocols, they say, are used in every bullying incident that is reported to the district.

They say they understand that parents have concerns about bullying and student safety. They also confirm that the Seguin ISD believes it has a strong anti-bullying program and bullying response system.

Town Hall, pg. 4

Intersection, continued.

Someone is going to get killed and I just prayed that no one got killed and I started going to every wreck too and there were some really bad ones. There were some people who were really lucky in some of these wrecks that they were not killed and so I just kept pushing and pushing and pushing and no was not an acceptable answer,” said Germann.

The Guadalupe County Commissioners Court also did its part to put some pressure on TxDOT.

Not only did it approve a resolution, but the county forwarded a petition to state leaders that included 1,000 signatures from residents

who also wanted to see the project expedited.

Germann says at times, he felt as though the project wasn’t moving from the back burner. But today, he says he is grateful to finally have some results.

“When they got the crash queries from me and then every time there was a wreck, I would call. I would say, we have another one. We had another one yesterday. We had two yesterday and I think that keeping it in the spotlight made a big difference. It made a huge difference,” said Germann.

Although TxDOT is on site and has officially begun the work, the traffic signal isn’t expected to be completely operational until late December.

Town Hall, continued.

They note that reports of issues such as bullying, fights, crimes against children, drug use or sales on campus and others, also can be made anonymously through the P3 portal. A link for that portal is always available on the district’s website.

District officials, however, say they

do recognize that there is always room for improvement. To that end, district officials say that is why they have scheduled tonight’s Town Hall Meeting to discuss bullying and other concerns with the community.

The town meeting gets underway at 6 p.m. today in the Seguin High School Performing Arts Center located at 1315 E. Cedar St.

Seguin’s fifth attempt to comeback from half time deficit this season falls short in bi-district round

(San Antonio) -- Four times this season, the Seguin Matadors won games after trailing at half time but they couldn’t do it a fifth time in a 33-26 loss to San Antonio Southwest in the Class 5A Division I BiDistrict round on Friday night at Dragon Stadium in San Antonio.

The Matadors found themselves down 14-7 at the half and then later down 26-10 in the third quarter to the Dragons. Seguin would pull within ten with 50 seconds left in the third when quarterback Corey Dailey hit tight end Lane Seidenberger for a seven-yard touchdown. On the ensuing two-point conversion, Dailey scrambled around a Southwest pass rush and found Seidenberger again in the end zone to make the score 26-18.

A little over three and a half minutes into the fourth quarter, Dailey scored on a one-yard run on fourth down to make the score 26-24. The junior quarterback would again buy time with his feet on the following two-point conversion to find Nik Henry coming back to his quarterback from the back of the end zone to haul in the conversion just across the goal line to tie the game at 26.

The Dragons would then go on a 74-yard drive to take the lead again. Southwest running back Tyson Deen scored his third touchdown of the night with a 23-yard TD run down the right sideline to put the Dragons up, 33-26 with 2:53 left in the ball game.

The Matadors would get the ball back and drive into Southwest territory with under a minute to go. On a fourth and long, Nik Henry could not haul in a bullet pass fired over the middle by Dailey inside the Dragon 20-yard line with 15 seconds on the clock. Southwest would kneel out the game following the turnover on downs.

Seguin erased halftime deficits against Brazoswood, Victoria East, Boerne Champion and Wagner during the 2024 regular season. They would erase another half time deficit against Southwest, but could not complete the comeback this time ending their season in the first round of the playoffs.

Dailey finished the game 18 of 27 through the air for 142 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 54 yards and a score. Running back Ian Moreno led Seguin with 153 yards rushing on 27 carries. The senior Henry had eight catches for 63 yards in his final game as a Matador. Seidenberger, also a senior, had three catches for 15 yards.

Junior linebacker Damian Garcia led the Mat defense with four tackles. Junior defensive lineman Hunter Mica had two tackles including one for loss.

Southwest, 11-0 on the season, moves on to the Area round next week where they will take on Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial. Seguin finished 4-3 in District 13-5A this season and 5-6 overall.
