Tis the season of giving, Seguin shows up for its neighbors

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – Seguin, you have done it again. Thank you for keeping the Christmas spirit alive and for showing your support even through a pandemic. Thanks to generous donations from our listeners, in just two hours Friday morning, Seguin Radio KWED collected $7,534, a

cargo van plus two vehicles full of toys, and hundreds of pounds of food. All the proceeds were collected on behalf of the Seguin Police Department’s Blue Santa Program, and the Christian Cupboard. KWED General Manager Darren Dunn says he was once again pleased with this year’s turnout.

“I will admit. I wasn’t sure what to expect today. Times are so different in 2020 because of the pandemic but people were still be very very generous today - still very, very giving. Organizations and companies and individuals and law enforcement, fire fighters and the list goes on and on and on. We appreciate them all so very much and I want to say ‘thank you’ to everyone who gave today,” said Dunn. See BLUE SANTA page 2

KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive collects loads of donations

BLUE SANTA continued from page 1

Also joining Russell outside the radio station on Friday was Whitney Magness, the new communications officer for the Navarro ISD. The two stopped by to show their support and witness the holiday magic that occurs each year in their new community.

Community leaders including the Seguin Police Department, the Seguin Fire/EMS Department, and the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, all braved the cold temperatures collecting change and donations from passerby’s outside our studios here at 609 E. Court Street. “I am so happy to be here and I think this is an amazing event just seeing all the people out here, Among those making their debut at the annual food the people honking as they are driving by and just and toy drive was Seguin’s new Mayor Donna showing the support for the community and all our Dodgen. Several local businesses also took the time to stop by and donate. Among those business owners was Carol Teeple, of A Cut Above Realty. “This is just our donation to the kids that don’t have Santa Claus coming. Hopefully, this will help them, and we are just really excited about being able to do this this year,” said Teeple. “This has been a rough year for so many people and if you just have any extra pennies in your pocket, anything will help these kids.” Guadalupe County Attorney Dave Willborn also made his annual trek to the radio station to deliver donations. Willborn for the last several years has made generous donations on behalf of his family and the county office. Willborn says his spirit of giving was started by his dad who founded the Blue Santa Program in San Antonio several years ago. Masks and social distancing were key in keeping folks safe as they stretched across East Court Street in search of your donations. Although this year’s event was modified, efforts were still festive and like Dunn stated, exceeded the radio station’s expectations. Others on hand for the event were the Seguin ISD and School Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez, Seguin Fire Chief Dale Skinner, Chris Aviles, chief of the Nixon Police Department and troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety. Again, these individuals were only a few of the community. KWED also thanks Soechting Motors for providing it with a vehicle to help load up the toys and Court Street Coffee for its morning brew. Food and toy donations will continue to be accepted in the KWED lobby through 2 p.m. Wednesday. The radio station is located at 609 E. Court. St. SEE PAGE 3 FOR MORE PHOTOS

District Champs!

Matadors claim share of 12-5A-DI title, No. 2 playoff seed in wild win over Dripping Springs

(Dripping Springs) - In an offensive fireworks show for the ages, Seguin claimed a share of the District 12-5A-Division I football championship for the second time in three seasons Friday night with a breathtaking 70-63 road win over Dripping Springs at Tiger Stadium. With identical 6-1 district records, the Matadors (7-2) and Tigers (8-3) finish in a three-way tie for first place with New Braunfels-Canyon (9-1). Each team went 1-1 against the other two, and the point system that rewards onfield wins over COVID-19 related forfeits gives the Cougars the No. 1 playoff seed, Seguin the No. 2 seed, and Dripping Springs the No. 3 spot. Seguin will host its bi-district playoff game against Pflugerville-Hendrickson at Matador Stadium on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Seguin celebrates its share of the District 12-5A-Division I title after Friday’s dramatic road win at Dripping Springs’ Tiger Stadium.

The Matadors and Tigers combined for over 1,200 yards of total offense, and the stats read like something from a video game. Unofficially, Seguin’s Micah Rodriguez threw for 258 yards and five touchdowns while running for 79 and two scores. Marques Washington ran for 228 yards and two touchdowns, and Tristan Moreno totaled 175 receiving yards and three scores on seven catches. See MATADORS, page 5

Despite those blistering totals, the Matador defense made the difference in the outcome by producing three turnovers, The Tigers pulled back within seven on a 15-yard connection all of which led to points. Junior halfback Brody Whitson scored both Navarro touchdowns in Friday’s season ending loss to Wimberley at Boerne ISD Stadium. Photo by Jacqueline Springs.

“They’re a great football team, and they were going to make plays, and we knew we were going to make plays, and what we talked about today was just all we had to do is make one more than them,” Bush said. “It was going to be that type of ballgame, we were prepared for it, and I’m just so proud of our guys. The ups and downs, the stops we made on defense at the right times. It’s going to be fun to watch the film that both teams made. Just amazing plays made by both teams.”

(Boerne) - Navarro’s football season ended in a 4A Division II Region IV championship game loss to Wimberley for the second straight year, this time by a 35-14 final on Friday at Boerne ISD Stadium.

Seguin used a two-yard touchdown pass from Rodriguez to Allen Martinez, Rodriguez runs of 10 and three years, a two-yard scamper by Mata, and a seven-yard strike from Rodriguez to Moreno after Mata’s first interception to build a 35-20 lead with 1:12 to play before halftime.

The Matadors have won four straight games since the Oct. 30 loss to New Braunfels-Canyon and the ensuing forfeit victory over Harlandale. Bush credits his seniors for keeping the young players on course over that span.

The Tigers responded with 22 straight points on touchdown passes of 75, 52, and 65 yards from Novosad to O’Banan to take their first lead of the game, 42-35 with 7:45 left in the third quarter.

“They were the ones that set the goal back in January, they talked about competing for championships, once we got beat by Canyon, they knew we couldn’t lose again,” Bush said.

Rodriguez fired a 75-yard touchdown pass to Moreno just 20 seconds later to tie it up, Dripping Springs reclaimed the lead 49-42 on a 15-yard toss from Novosad to Parker Alford, and the Matadors knotted things up at 49 when Rodriguez found Moreno in the back of the end zone from 10 yards out.

“If they wanted to be champions, they could not lose again, it was going to boil down to this game, the last game of the year, and they were the leaders of our team. They’re the ones that had the guys ready, and so proud of their efforts, their leadership, and the mentality they had on the sideline in this game to keep everybody into it the whole time.”

The Panthers racked up 591 yards of total offense, but squandered multiple scoring opportunities with a combination of five turnovers and 10 penalties.

for a 54-yard run late in the third period to pull Navarro within striking distance at 28-14. Tippie connected with Pruett for a 47yard touchdown pass on the ensuing possession to establish the final margin. Whitson, Zeke Campos, and Nick Billings each topped 100 yards rushing in the final game of the season.

Wimberley used touchdown passes of 34 and 75 yards from Matthew Tippie to Ty Pruett, a 66-yard run by Moses Wray, and a three-yard fumble return by Nova Ranking to build a 28-0 lead with 2:07 to play in the second quarter.

Navarro has advanced four playoff rounds to the regional finals in each of Rod Blount’s three seasons as head coach. This was the program’s fourth trip to the fourth round in five years, and fifth overall.

Brody Whitson broke up the shutout with a 16-yard touchdown in the closing seconds of the first half, and powered through the Texans’ defense

The 2020 Panthers finish the year with a District 14-4A-Division II championship, three playoff wins, and a final record of 11-3.
