Car show, online auction to help collect toys for Blue Santa By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
cars, trucks, we are going to have some big diesel fourwheel drive trucks here. We have the original Dukes of Hazzard car coming in from the very first episode. I think we have a monster truck coming and we’ve got some other surprises that are going to be here as well. I really can’t give that out until I get confirmation today. But anyway, it’s going to be a good time. DJ D Trayne is going to be here doing the DJ’ing for us. Everybody needs to come out and check it all out,” said Elley.
(Seguin) -- A local business is soliciting the help of a pair of country artists and a group of car and bike enthusiasts to help ensure that every child finds a gift under the Christmas tree. Philip Elley, owner of Koda Powder Coating LLC, will be hosting a Blue Santa Car Show on Saturday and online auction this Friday. Elley says the car show is his attempt at giving folks that one last chance to donate a toy for the Seguin Police Department’s Blue Santa Program. “We are doing it across the street at the church (First United Methodist) parking lot from our business. It’s $20 to enter the car show. It’s basically just going to be a Show and Shine. We are giving out awards for first, second and third and Best of Show Overall. It’s either $20 to get in or bring a $20 unwrapped toy. That’s what we actually prefer, and we are going to do about 10 classes,

Elley says an online auction is also currently underway featuring an autographed guitar by Country Artist Kevin Fowler. Elley says bids will be accepted through noon Friday. See CAR SHOW page 3

Deadline arrives to fill out Blue Santa applications By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Blue Santa is nearing the end of making his list of boys and girls this holiday season. Today marks the deadline to submit applications for the Seguin Police Department Blue Santa Program. The program provides toys for underprivileged families in the community. Blue Santa’s Top Elf Hope Vasquez is asking that folks encourage those they know to sign up if they have not already. She says the application ensures gifts for those who need it this Christmas. “We really want to help our children; our local children and we do not want them to be left out for Christmas. So, if there is a neighbor, a friend or your sister that is having trouble providing Christmas for their children, please remind them to come today to apply before noon because it is our last day to process all the applications,” said Vasquez. Vasquez says applications are available
at various locations across the county. However, because today is the deadline, she encourages families to stop by and fill out the paperwork at the Seguin Police Department if possible.
“We really want to reach out to all those parents for them to come in and apply for those children up to the age of 12. All they need to bring is a photo ID, proof of residence. It could be a contract for a lease document, proof of income and if they don’t have any income, then any government assistance that they might be receiving, bring documentation, an email address, a current working telephone number. So that’s basically what you need so it doesn’t’ ask for much but we do need them to come in and apply and meet the deadline,” said Vasquez.
The distribution of gifts for those families seeking assistance will be Wednesday, Dec. 16 and Thursday, Dec. 17 from noon to 7:30 p.m. at the Blue Santa headquarters located at the old Beall’s Department Store at Crossroads Mall. The deadline to apply for gifts, again, is Friday at noon.

Matadors host Hawks in bi-district playoff clash, Friday game to air on KWED
(Seguin) - Seguin looks to kick down the door to the second round of the UIL football playoffs for the first time since 1988 when Pflugerville-Hendrickson visits Matador Stadium for a 5A Division I bi-district battle on Friday. The Matadors (7-2, 6-1) claimed a share of the District 12 championship and bi-district hosting rights last week with a 70-63 road win over Dripping Springs. Seguin has qualified for the playoffs in the last three of Travis Bush’s five seasons as head coach. Hendrickson went 6-3 during the regular season with one forfeit loss and eight onfield games under 13th-year head coach Chip Killian. The Hawks finished third in District 11 behind Cedar Park and Georgetown, locking up that seed with a 35-21 win over Leander last Thursday. The Seguin offense has been nothing short of spectacular in 2020, averaging 50 points and 487 total yards per game. The Hawks have been stout in their own right, producing 39 points per outing. Friday’s matchup will be a showcase of talented skill players on both rosters.
In eight on-field games, Seguin quarterback Defensive coordinator Nate Langford’s bunch enters the playoffs with Micah Rodriguez has completed 75 percent 20 takeaways in eight on-field games (13 fumble recoveries, seven of his passes for 2,122 yards and a school interceptions), and Seguin’s season turnover margin is plus-12. record 31 touchdowns with only three interceptions. Top receiver Tristan Moreno See MATADORS page 5 pulled in 55 catches for 977 yards and 12 scores during the regular season, while tailback Marques Washington totaled 1,131 yards and 11 touchdowns rushing to go with 27 receptions for 346 yards and four scores. Hendrickson boasts an explosive senior trio of its own in quarterback Jordan Oldoerp, running-back Jasiya Demps, and receiver Jaden Williams. In six on-field district games, Oldoerp completed 80 percent of his throws for 1,172 yards and 14 touchdowns. Demps ran for 713 yards and 10 touchdowns during that stretch, and Williams totaled 538 receiving yards and eight scores on 29 catches to go with 268 rushing yards and two TDs. The game could resemble last week’s high scoring affair in Dripping Springs, with the outcome decided by which defense comes up with an extra stop or two and forces the most turnovers. The Matadors scored points against the Tigers after each of their three interceptions, two by linebacker John Michael Mata and one by corenerback Chris Awshah.
Harris Franz (50) and the Seguin offensive line look to open holes for tailback Marques Washington (1,131 yds., 15 total TD) against a physical Hendrickson defense on Friday. Washington ran for 264 yards and two touchdowns against Dripping Springs last week. Photo by Mitchell Franz.

FRIDAY DECEMBER 11, 2020
SCAC announces that member schools intend to move forward with spring competitions (Lawrenceville, GA) - The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, Texas Lutheran University’s conference for 15 of its 18 intercollegiate sports, announced that all of its member institutions intend to move forward with athletic competition in the spring semester. This announcement came after continuing discussions throughout the fall semester by the league’s COVID Task Force in consultation with each institution’s president, athletic director, athletic trainer and game day management personnel. Fifteen of TLU’s 18 intercollegiate sports programs play in the SCAC. TLU Football plays in the American Southwest Conference, and TLU’s men’s and women’s indoor track & field programs compete as independents. TLU’s football season in the ASC remains on track as well. TLU and all of its fellow football members in the ASC will play four games against divisional opponents and a final game against a cross-divisional opponent. The conference’s football schedule will be played under a two-division model with teams closing the 2020-21 season with a playoff pitting teams crossseeded in a single game.
TLU Football begins its 2020-21 season with a noon kickoff at Howard Payne University on Feb. 6. In the SCAC, men’s and women’s basketball will move to a conference-only scheduling model with each team slated to play a 12-game schedule. Play is scheduled to begin Jan. 15 and run through the weekend of Feb. 26-27. The adjusted formats maintain conference tournament opportunities and ultimately the chance to earn the SCAC’s automatic bids to the NCAA Tournaments. For the first time since the SCAC reinstated a postseason conference basketball tournament in 2003, the men’s and women’s basketball championships will be held at different sites. The men’s teams will be hosted by Southwestern University, and the women’s teams will be hosted by Austin College. The top eight teams will qualify for each event with both tournaments scheduled to run March 4-6. The SCAC Swimming & Diving Championships remain scheduled for Feb. 10-13 in San Antonio. This date still allows for recorded times for possible NCAA championship qualification.
Seguin looks to clear playoff hurdle vs. Hendrickson
MATADORS continued from page 4 Hendrickson has the ege in defensive experience up front, starting five seniors and two juniors on the defensive line and in the linebacking corps. “They are a very huge, very talented defensive line that’s given everybody fits that they’ve played,” Bush said of the Hendrickson front. “So again, it boils down to can we establish the run? Can we run the ball effectively, as well as pass protect when we need to run the football?”
The Matadors start three sophomores and a freshman in the front seven, but the juniors in that group - Mata (56 tackles, 2 Int.), Allen Martinez (82 tackles, 10 TFL), and Ian Box (16 TFL, 9.5 sacks) now have two seasons of starting experience under their belts.
Seguin’s offensive line of Henry Cheek, Marco Montemayor, Daniel Gonzalez, Harris Franz, and Martin Ramirez helped the Mats pile up 379 rushing yards against Dripping Springs, including 264 on 30 carries for Washington. “I think both sides of the ball, it’s going to be getting pressure on the quarterback, and stopping some of their big runs and not giving up the big plays, and then establishing the line of scrimmage on offense,” Bush said. Friday’s kickoff at Matador Stadium is slated for 7:30 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday. com. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:50 with the season wrap-up edition of the Navarro coaches’ show, followed by live coverage at the stadium at 7:00.
Additionally, changes were made to the previously announced conference volleyball schedule. Teams will still play a 16-game schedule, but competition will be strictly conference-only and conducted via home or away doubleheaders over the course of eight weekends. Play begins Feb. 13. Both men’s and women’s soccer schedules remain unchanged from an earlier October announcement, and the SCAC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships are slated for Feb. 6 at the University of Dallas. In an August announcement , the NCAA cancelled all Division III national championships in fall sports. Competition and schedules in all conferencesponsored spring sports remain in place for 2021 as previously released. For more information, be sure to check the SCAC website at www.scacsports.com and visit each of the conference members’ athletics websites. TLU’s athletics website is www.tlubulldogs.com. These interests continued in college at Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College (now Texas State University), where she was honored as a Gaillardian. Following graduation, her first teaching assignment was in Donna, Texas, at the tender age of 19. There she met Coach Woodrow Isham, who became her husband in 1947.
