(Seguin) -- Seguin Police Detectives continue to search for three robbery suspects. According to officials, at approximately 9:45 a.m. Monday, Seguin Police Officers received a call of a robbery at the Seguin Health Mart Pharmacy located at 211 E. Court St. in downtown Seguin. Seguin High School to finish off fall semester with full remote learning By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- It’s remote learning these next four days for students at Seguin High School. The campus on Monday announced that students would finish out the fall semester at home. Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says the total transition to virtual learning is in response to an increase in COVID-19 cases at the campus. “The impetus for going virtual through Friday at Seguin High School and essentially shutting down our face to face operations is because we’ve seen COVID numbers go up since Friday, since last week. We are at about 11 confirmed cases at Seguin High School with about 150 students quarantined so going with the knowledge that our high school students are rather mature and are able to convert remote learning quickly, they are used to it, it’s something that they are well versed in so in an effort to keep the COVID numbers down and to keep our other campuses open as well especially our middle schools, the elementaries and Ball Early Childhood Center, we figured that one of the best methodologies to do this is to go remote learning for our high school students through the rest of the week,” said Hoffmann.
the hour each day and looking at each campus, looking at numbers, looking at trends, seeing if we are seeing dramatic increases at campus. As we do, we will make adjustments as needed, as warranted. Right now, we feel as the high school is probably the safest campus to go to remote learning at this point and if we see in the next few days that we have to do something similar at another campus, we are not going to hesitate. We are not going to jeopardize our staff and our students. We’ll go ahead and go remote if needed but right now, the high school was the prudent thing to do,” said Hoffmann. “I think it’s important to add face to face learning opportunities this week will remain open for essential academic students and additionally, extra curricular practices after school, those will still be in place. Students can still attend those.” Hoffmann says the district going virtual is just one more way to combat the numbers and remain proactive in its approach to the pandemic.
As for all other campuses, Hoffmann says those schools will continue to operate as they have been.
“We are all adjusting as we go. We are very grateful that we’ve been through this fall up until Dec. 14 without having to close any schools. Going in, we figured that it would be a given at some point but here were are, we are four days out from winter break and all of our schools have remained open and the high school, we are going to continue that instruction for four more days. It’s just going to be remote,” said Hoffmann.
“We are monitoring and evaluating literally by

Santa Sherriff finds a way to ensure his annual delivery to area nursing homes packages to area seniors. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown of many of the nursing homes, Zwicke says residents were unable to get a personal visit from the bearded Santa Sheriff himself-- a visit he says he too looked forward to every year.
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Pandemic or no pandemic, you can always count on Santa Sheriff to deliver some holiday cheer to those who need it the most. Although his annual visit to each Guadalupe County nursing home was limited this year to outside the front door, Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke a.k.a. Santa Sheriff says he was still able to wrangle up his deputy elves to help deliver hundreds of holiday care
“The first year I was asked to do the Santa deal, I was scared out of my wits but after that, I enjoyed it so much and not being able to do it this year, yeah I was pretty sad but we still got across the folks that we talked to at the rest homes --(they) indicated that the residents were looking for us and unfortunately, that couldn’t happen this year but we look forward to doing it again next year,” said Zwicke. Nonetheless, Zwicke says he was able to ensure that a few goodies made it inside to help make the days easier on each of the nursing home residents. “So we went to six rest homes and delivered 478 care packages which consist of blankets, cups, socks, a pack of
Kleenex, a brush comb set and a pocket calendar is what we decided this year,” said Zwicke. For years, Zwicke has donned on the red suit, white beard and cowboy hat during his annual trek to area nursing homes. He says while things were different, he is at least glad that the program continued this holiday season. “We still appreciate the partnership with the rest homes and that we still want to take care of our residents that paved the way for us,” said Zwicke. The sheriff’s office is appreciative to community and business sponsors who have supported the holiday program over the years. He is also thankful to all those sheriff employees who have also raised money during the No Shave November contest as part of its proceeds also go to purchase the small gifts. The nursing homes who were on Santa Sheriff’s list included Nesbit, GVNC, Windsor, Remarkable, Hacienda Oaks and Autumn Winds in Schertz. More PHOTOS page 14

City announces event cancellations, reservations on city property amid increase of COVID-19 cases
By Cindy AguirreHerrera (Seguin) -- As a result of rising COVID-19 cases in Seguin and Guadalupe County in recent weeks, Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen says she has made the decision to cancel all events held on city property, effective this Wednesday, Dec. 16. Dodgen says this decision was made based on the recent influx of COVID-19 hospitalizations at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, as well as the steady rise in COVID-19 cases being reported in Seguin. She says the event cancellations will extend through Feb. 1, 2021. “That would be the Coliseum, the Fairgrounds, any of the sports complex and so it’s through Feb.1 and we will reevaluate at the end of January but it could actually and it will be reevaluated if the numbers drop drastically. This is just such a fluid situation but yes, any of the events that have been scheduled and already reserved for the sports complex, the fairgrounds, that sort of thing and of course, we won’t take anymore even for the parks or anything along that line although nothing has been scheduled for them,” said Dodgen. Dodgen says public safety and what is best for our community drives her decision. “We’ve noticed that it really has put a stress on our hospital and our staffing and our community providers have also indicated that the gatherings, that the larger they are, have increased the numbers and the potentiality and so we’ve been seeing a steady, steady increase. We are meeting more often with the hospital, the judge, the other mayors, the school district and so we see that happening and so with that, I just really
couldn’t in good conscious, in thinking about the safety of our community, continue to be okay with large gatherings on what I had control over at the time is our city properties,” said Dodgen. Dodgen says all she wants is for the community to be safe and healthy. She says it’s important for people to take care of each other and to be mindful of personal behaviors. “I want to also encourage families, if they are going to gather, if they have to gather in large units, they have to have to practice good safety and sanitation. I would prefer that they not gather because that does seem to be what’s causing the numbers to move up but I do understand that but please wash hands, stay social distanced, wear your mask and that’s tough in a large large gathering of people that you know. That often doesn’t happen and just think about it, if you are sick, stay home or if you are concerned, stay away so yes, this was a hard, hard decision to make,” said Dodgen. Customers will receive full refunds for all facility bookings impacted by this public health emergency. Because the COVID-19 pandemic is a fluid, ever-changing health crisis, the city says it will review case trends in late January 2021 to determine if the event cancellations can be lifted. Until then, they say the necessary precautions will be taken.

COVID Vaccine Given In NY
(Queens, NY) -- The coronavirus vaccine is being given in New York. Governor Andrew Cuomo watched virtually as a woman named Sandra received the vaccine. She’s a critical care nurse and said after getting the vaccine, she’s feeling well. Sandra added that she’s hopeful and relieved, but she urged folks to continue following public health measures. Cuomo noted that the vaccine only works if Americans roll up their sleeves and actually get vaccinated. Cuomo admitted it’ll take many months for folks to get vaccinated. He also urged people to be smart over the holiday season.
Some Alabama Hospitals Resort To Self-Treatment Program For COVID Patients
(Undated) -- As cases of the coronavirus continue surging across the country, hospitals are finding themselves increasingly overwhelmed. Some hospitals in Alabama are now resorting to sending
their less severe cases home for patients to care for themselves. Pfizer Ships Out COVID Vaccine
(Undated) -- Today’s the day so many people have been waiting for as the first shots of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine are expected to be given out. The drugmaker said it would deliver some sixpoint-four million doses in its initial shipments, which started rolling out yesterday morning. While the arrival of the vaccine is good news in the fight against the pandemic, experts caution it will take months to produce enough to vaccinate most Americans.
