Texas State Technical College to build new campus in Seguin

(Seguin) -- Seguin is getting another major institution of higher learning. The community already boasts an award-winning campus at Texas Lutheran University. It will now also be the home to the state’s newest Texas State Technical College campus.

The new TSTC campus in Seguin was officially announced yesterday. It will be built along State Highway 46 near Cordova Road.

Although T-S-T-C currently leases space for many of its programs over at the Central Texas Technology Center near the New Braunfels Municipal Airport in northern Guadalupe County, the workforce development college has chosen to not only expand its offerings there, but to also establish a brand-new campus in Seguin.

Josh Schneuker, executive director of the Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), says landing this campus is an incredibly big deal and a game changer for this entire part of the state.

(Guadalupe County) -- Michael Skufca came to Texas State Technical College’s New Braunfels campus to save money on tuition, and in his first month he was able to set himself up to start his career while earning a certificate of completion in Structural Welding.

“I was going to go to (another college), but it was $20,000 for tuition and another $20,000 for living in Austin,” Skufca said. “My mom had a friend go to TSTC in Waco and found out the New Braunfels campus was getting welding and tuition was cheaper, so I came here.”

Skufca is in his first semester at TSTC, and he already has a job with metal fabrication company United Alloy in Seguin.

“I met United Alloy during new student orientation, and they didn’t have any openings yet,” he said. “I emailed them with my resume after that, and they called the first week of classes to let me test for a part-time job.”

As part of the application process to go to work at United Alloy, Skufca had to pass a welding test. Afterward, the company allowed him to watch their evaluation of his work.

“I got to stay and watch the inspection process,” he said. “I had one super-small pinhole and passed. It was a great learning experience for me.”

Skufca began welding as a high school student in New Braunfels. He said he got a late start in the program

there but still got a lot out of the experience.

“The welding program in high school usually starts sophomore year, but I started junior year,” he said. “The program was really good. It gave room for creativity to build projects, and I got to learn with students who competed in and won Texas FFA (National FFA Organization) competitions.”

Scufka is looking to grow his skills at TSTC.

“The program in high school didn’t really teach me MIG (metal inert gas) or TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding,” he said. “I’m excited to learn those, and it’s great

Tuesday marks deadline for KWED Christmas Angel

(Seguin) — Families have until Tuesday, Dec. 17 to enter the annual KWED Christmas Angel contest.

Anyone is invited to write in and explain why they believe their family or someone they know are deserving or is need of $500 cash this holiday season. The contest, which started several years ago, is designed to illustrate the Christmas season’s true spirit of giving and sharing.

As part of the contest, the winning letter will be read live on the air just a few days before

Christmas. The winning letter along with photos of the family will also be printed in a holiday edition of the Seguin Daily News.

All entries must include the name of the person submitting the

“A facility like this you know, there’s not one within any area around Seguin. The closest TSTC campus is going to be up in Williamson County on the far northern side of the Austin Metro area and that’s about it. It took a lot of work for us to get TSTC legislative approval to expand their service territory into Comal and Guadalupe County and at the end of the day, these future TSTC students across our region are going to have the opportunity to get a high wage, high demand occupation with very little college debt tied to that and our manufacturers – all the different companies – that rely on this very specific and specialized technical training -- I know they’ve got to be very excited today with this news,” said Schneuker.

Schneuker says the TSTC Seguin campus will benefit Seguin, New Braunfels and surrounding communities for years to come.

He says this strategic move strengthens the college’s commitment to addressing regional workforce needs.

Plus, he says it will empower individuals to transform their lives, by acquiring the skills and trades necessary to succeed in life.

“The programs that they offer really align almost perfectly with the industry that we have here in Seguin and throughout the region. Seguin is a blue-collar community and TSTC is great at providing technical training programming for those bluecollar type industries so your manufacturing, your construction industry, your welders, your HVAC technicians, your plumbers, your electricians -- those are vital occupations especially in a rapidly growing area like Seguin and Guadalupe County. So, to be able to have that training in our backyard by reputable training providers

letter along with their address and phone number. Letters without a name or phone number will not be considered for the contest. The winning letter will be chosen by an anonymous panel of judges not employed at Seguin Radio KWED or the Seguin Daily News.

All letters for this year’s contest must be submitted by 5 p.m. Tuesday Dec. 17 at the radio station located at 609 E. Court St. If after 4 p.m. letters can be dropped in the letter slot located alongside the front door.

and TSTC is huge. It’s going to provide our residents here in Seguin and across the region with the opportunity to probably in some cases – change the lives of people,” said Schneuker.

The announcement aligns with the city’s economic development master plan.

Schneuker says this new campus will serve as a catalyst for economic growth by drawing more people to live and work in Seguin.

“It’s also going to help out and be a recruitment tool for us as well. One of the big things that companies are looking for when they are doing site selection to maybe placing a manufacturing facility in Seguin or somewhere else, it’s not the financial incentives, it’s looking at does that area have the labor to support us and does that labor have the skills sets needed for the occupations that our facility is going to have in place there? Being able to leverage those programs and different offerings that TSTC has, in my mind, is just a win for everybody,” said Schneuker.

While the blueprints for the campus now, are currently preliminary, Schneuker says the actual start up for construction is still in the works.

“In terms of building the new campus and the timeline of these buildings going up, there’s going to be a lot of work done at the upcoming state legislative session. I know TSTC is going to be looking at having dollars allocated towards construction costs for a new campus and I know that that is something that all of our stakeholders across Seguin and Guadalupe County and throughout the region will be supporting as well as our business community and then I think kind of going from there, once we get out of the legislative session, we should have a firmer grasp on the timeline associated with the development of the new campus,” said Schneuker.

TSTC’s main campus is in Waco, but it also operates campuses across the state.

For nearly 60 years, TSTC has worked to help strengthen the Texas workforce, offering highly skilled, technically competent trades.

The college offers a unique funding model that is based on their student employment outcomes.

Landvatter

Roderick “Ric” Jon Landvatter, age 73, was born January 31, 1951, to William (Bill) and Doris Wigren Landvatter in Redmond, Washington. He passed to his eternal home on December 10, 2024. Ric was the third of four children. Faith Lutheran in Redmond was the family’s church where he began his journey to having a relationship with Jesus Christ. Surrounded by grandparents, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins, he was raised in a loving and close-knit family. Ric graduated from Redmond High School in 1969, and attended Pacific Lutheran University. Ric was blessed with the birth of his two sons, Roderick and Matthew. Experiencing such great love for his sons is but a drop in the bucket when it came to the love God has for us. Ric proudly served his country for six years in the United States Air Force.

Ric’s life could be divided into two phases—the one before the cancer diagnosis and the one after. In 2006, Ric was diagnosed with a very fastgrowing prostate cancer. Ric drove to his church and wrestled with God over the news of the diagnosis. What came out of that battle changed the rest of Ric’s life. He gave it over to God and decided to trust the outcome to the One who gave him life and now held his life in HIS hands. The peace that came over him stayed with him through all the trials yet to come. The first oncology doctor Ric met with gave him a prognosis of 6 months. That was 18 years ago. God had other plans for Ric.

The most amazing gift in the life after cancer diagnosis was finding the love of his life, Diana, who loved the Lord as much as Ric did. As their relationship grew, they made many wonderful memories together. Many centered around their love of travel. They enjoyed attending the 2009 Tour de France as well as following it on tv. They took many cruises

VITAL STATISTICS Klein

Alice Zunker Klein, age 89 of Marion, passed away on December 8, 2024. Alice was born on December 1, 1935, in Bexar County, Texas, to Lena F. Krueger and Oscar Andrew Zunker.

Alice exemplified the embodiment of a mother’s true love. She was the nurturing heart of her family, extending love and kindness to everyone she encountered in her wonderful life.

She was a mother and grandmother to all her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and even the occasional extended family friends. She enjoyed many things; dancing, bingo, casino trips, and her farm life, but raising and caring for all of her “babies” was the true passion of her life. Words cannot describe how much she will be missed by all.

and loved camping with their San Antonio Road Runners RV club. Last Christmas found them in Guadalupe in the Southern Caribbean.

Two gifts God gave Ric were the ability to sing and a love for people. Ric got the most joy when using those gifts. He often sang at church or in musicals and thoroughly enjoyed directing a choir. For several years he was a part of Kairos Prison Ministry that helped many in prison find freedom through a relationship with Jesus. Ric also became a volunteer hospital chaplain where he could encourage others with the love of Jesus. Ric often spoke of feeling the closest to God when he was serving him. Ric never missed an opportunity to share his love of Jesus or Jesus’ love for the one he was talking with. Ric’s mission was to pray for the concerns of others.

Ric is survived by his wife Diana, children Rick and wife Erin Landvatter, Matthew and wife Wendy Landvatter, Adam and wife Nicole Strom, Sara and wife Vanessa Strom, his grandchildren Moira, James and Isaiah, and his siblings, Cathy, Gary and Jeff along with many nephews and nieces.
