great community accomplishments with the community service awards and the young professional of the year award. And we’ve got a couple of new awards that we are adding this year, because, of course, we need to do that after 100 years. We have a lot of things and a lot of people to recognize. And what a year we are going to be celebrating, we are going to be celebrating the end of 2020. I’ve also got some fun elements included,” said Gravett.

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce wants you to help it celebrate 100 years of service to the local business community. Tickets are still on sale for the chamber’s Centennial Celebration and Awards Banquet. The event, which had been postponeed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, is now scheduled to be an online-only event slated for Tuesday, January 12. Chamber Business & Events Manager Kelsyi Meza says this is a major milestone for the chamber, and they hope that people will register to be a part of this big celebration.

The chamber is bringing in a special guest to help celebrate it’s 100th year. A well known PBS star, who featured Seguin on his show last year, will return for the chamber’s banquet next month. He’s going to serve as the guest speaker and host for the big event. See DAYTRIPPER page 2

Commission is also offering help to Texans. The TWC is offering help for those eateries hard hit by the COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions. The TWC now has a new Restaurant Recovery Initiative to help restaurants that are struggling during COVID-19

Tickets available for the celebration of chamber’s 100th year

“So our Centennial Celebration will feature “The Daytripper,” Chet Garner. He’s going to tell us why Seguin is so special. It will also be an opportunity to recognize our amazing community members with special awards. So if you want to participate, tickets are $20. We just need your email address and your physical address so we can send you a commemorative gift in the mail. If you want to register, you can always call us at the chamber (830-379-6382) or go on our website (seguinchamber.com) and we can get that set up for you,” said Meza. The chamber primarily focuses its attention on the business community and on quality of life initiatives in Seguin. It’s role has evolved over the years, with some of its original work now done by the city of Seguin. But Gravett says it’s overall mission of serving the local business community remains the same. “The city does a great job right now with the things that the chamber used to be responsible for, one of them being economic development and the other one being the visitors’ center. Even though the visitors’

center still located here in the chamber office, and we are partners in inviting people to come enjoy our community, (it’s run by the city). But that all originated within the chamber. Really what we are (still) about is bringing people together,” said Gravett. Meza says they expect a large turnout for the celebration, but she says there’s still time for people to get signed up.

“(Again), It’s going to be January 12. We are doing it on Zoom Webinar, just because of what’s going on. That felt like the safest option for us. If you want a ticket, they are $20. You can either call the chamber or go on our website and register. We need your email address and your physical address... and you will get your Zoom log-in information as we get closer to the event,” said Meza. The banquet, runs from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12, and will incldue the awards ceremony and the special visit with Chet Garner. It will also mark a changing of the guard as new chamber board members are recognized for the new year. Again, people can register by visiting seguinchamber.com or calling 830-379-6382.

City making it easy to get rid of your Chistmas tree

Seguin offering two ways for you dispose of your live tree

By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- If your Christmas tree is looking a little dry and droopy these days, it might be time to let it go. The city of Seguin is offering a Christmas tree removal service for local residents who have real (once live) trees in their homes. Seguin Public Information Officer Jennifer Sourcdellia says live trees can be cut in half and put out for pickup as part of the city’s regular garbage collection services. “We just want everyone to know that we are picking up Christmas trees now. We know it hasn’t been too long since we had Christmas, but there are some people out there who want to go ahead and get rid of their Christmas tree, and we are more than happy to pick it up. There are two ways to go about this. The first is the live Christmas trees will be collected with

your regular garbage pick up, on your regular garbage pick up day. We want to make sure that all the ornaments and all the decorations are removed from the tree, including the tree stand, and also you must cut it in half before it will be collected. That is for collection on your regular garbage day,” said Sourdellia. Some people may not want their tree to end up in a landfill. If that’s the case for you, the city also has an option that will allow your tree to be mulched up as part of its brush collection program. “You can also choose to have it picked up duing brush collection. You can leave your tree at the curb and it will be collected as part of our rotation of our brush collection. These Christmas trees must be placed at the curb on the Monday morning of your designated week to make sure that it’s picked up. Again, you must have all the decorations, lights, stands -anything that’s on the tree must be removed

before it’s collected. You do not have to cut it in half if it’s picked up as a brush collection. That is the one difference,” said Sourdellia. The brush collection occurs once a month in various parts of the city. Sourdellia says they’ve also made it easy for you to find out when you’re scheduled to receive your monthly brush pickup. “If you need to find out which brush collection you fall within in your zone, just visit us at seguintexas.gov and click on the public works page, where there is a brush link and that will take you to all the different zones in the city,” said Sourdellia. Sourdellia says if people need more information about the live Christmas tree disposal services, they can call the Public Works Department at 830-401-2416 or Citizen Relations Office at (830) 401-2445.

Trump Signs COVID Relief Bill (West Palm Beach, FL) -- Americans suffering from the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic will get more economic help now that President Trump has signed a new relief package. The bill provides 600-dollar direct payments to Americans. That amount could be increased to two-thousand-dollars as Congress readies votes on additional relief. Trump hesitated to sign this stimulus package because he believes Americans deserve more cash. The relief package also restores extended unemployment benefits, provides assistance for businesses, and dedicates money to help with the distribution of coronavirus vaccines. Dr. Fauci Worried About Post-Holiday Season COVID Surge (Washington, DC) -- The nation’s top infectious disease expert is worried about a post-holiday season coronavirus surge. On CNN’s State of the Union, Dr. Anthony Fauci [[ FOW-chee ]] said he’s concerned about what will happen over the next few weeks. However, Fauci is one of many Americans to have already been vaccinated against the virus. He said he felt an ache in his arm soon after getting his first dose, but didn’t deal with any other side effects. Fauci again recommended that President Trump get vaccinated because he’s still in office, but conceded the final decision on that will be up to Trump and the White House doctor. Fauci added he hopes many people will be vaccinated by next fall so we can think about returning to normal.

Surgeon General: Public Health Measures Even More Important With New COVID Variant (Washington, DC) -- The U.S. Surgeon General is stressing the need for everyone to follow public health measures as new coronavirus strains emerge. On ABC’s This Week, Dr. Jerome Adams said doing the basics is even more important if folks are worried about the variants like that found in the UK. When it comes to the vaccine rollout, Adams said getting trusted community voices like religious leaders involved is critical. He added that hope has arrived when it comes to the vaccines. OH Gov: The Vaccine Is Here, But Don’t Give Up Now (Cedarville, OH) -- Ohio Governor Mike DeWine says folks in his state can’t let their guard down despite the arrival of coronavirus vaccines. On CBS’ Face The Nation, the Republican chief executive admitted people have been asked to make sacrifices and that they’re tired after battling the pandemic. He even admitted it’s understandable that people are upset. However, DeWine said now’s not the time to throw in the towel.
