Pack the Bus Distribution Day to be Memorial service set for woman who laid dead inside held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church her house for several years By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
By Cindy AguirreHerrera (Seguin) -- A woman who was discovered dead inside her house and who had been there for the last three years will finally be laid to rest. A memorial service for Jacquelyn "Jackie" Thomas Crayton is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Emanuel's Lutheran Church. In July, Seguin Police officials say Crayton's skeletal remains were found after they were reportedly ignored on the floor of a bedroom at her home located in the 900 block of Anderson Street. They said investigation showed that the woman's daughter, De-
lissa Crayton, claimed that her mother had fallen and "died within a few days lying on the floor." The body was then left behind the closed bedroom door for three years. Delissa was later ar-
rested and also charged with injury to a child under the age of 15 through recklessly -- by omission -- causing to a child, serious mental deficiency, impairment or injury. This was after having her own daughter, Crayton's granddaughter, living at the home while the body decomposed in the next room. This weekend, the community will remember the retired Seguin ISD employee. Crayton will also be remembered for being a lovable and caring person who was always ready and willing to help others.
(Seguin) -- Crayons, pencils, notebooks and erasers will all be making their way into students' backpacks during Saturday's Pack the Bus Distribution Day. This year's school supply distribution for low income families will return to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. The event is organized each year by the Seguin and Geronimo Lions Clubs. For months, the groups have been
collecting school supplies for Seguin and Navarro ISD students enrolled in Pre-K through the sixth grades. A community collection drive was held just last week across the city.
Sanders-Campa says volunteers each year prepare 2,000 school supply bags for students. In addition to picking up school supplies, families will be provided other information to help them throughout the year. Sanders says local services and non-profits have again teamed together to participate in the annual Inter-Agency Health Fair to be held at the same time of distribution. See BUS Page 2
Low income families who need school supplies for their children must bring their SNAP card, Medicaid letter or a reduced lunch letter for admittance into the distribution drive. Pack the Bus Coordinator Suzanne
Shoppers to hit the stores during Tax Free Holiday weekend By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- If you're looking to save a few extra dollars on your back-to-school shopping, then this weekend might be the best time to do so. Officials say Crayton This year's sales tax holiwas 71-year-old when day began at 12:01 a.m. Friday and goes through she died in 2016. midnight Sunday, Aug. 11.
During this annual sales tax holiday, you can buy most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks (sold for less than $100) tax free from a Texas store or from an online or catalog seller doing business in Texas. In most cases, you do not need to give the seller an exemption cer-
tificate to buy qualifying items tax free. The dates for the Sales Tax Holiday are set by the Texas Legislature. The exemption applies to each eligible item sold for less than $100, and there is no limit to the number of qualifying items you can buy.
For example, if you buy two shirts for $80 each, each shirt qualifies for the exemption because each is less than $100, even though the total purchase price is $160. The savings is said to equate to about $8 on every $100 they spend. See TAX Page 3

(Seguin) -- Happy Birthday Seguin! The Seguin Conservation Society is inviting you to spend your Friday night celebrating the city's 181st birthday. The celebration will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the First Church/Campbell-Hoermann Log Cabin Complex. Kay Martin, of the Seguin Conservation Society, says the group is inviting the community to come out for a night of great food and live music. "We have a barbecue dinner and we have a band with Kirk & Friends. The band is going to play on the porch of the cabin and then we have the Sheriff's Posse that brings a proclamation in and then the mayor reads it. They bring it on horseback which is kind of fun and then they do kind of like a little show with all their maneuvers and everything. Then we have a short business meeting and announce our new board members and every year, we showcase something that we've done for the historic property, the Heritage Village down there and this year, we partnered with the city of Seguin and Kyle Kramm and we got some new sidewalks. It looks really pretty," said Martin.
CALL FOR RATES
Martin says the featured event of the night will, of course, again be the celebration's homemade ice cream contest -- a contest that she says is still accepting entries. "We also have a homemade ice cream contest which has really become popular and people covet the little ribbon that they give for the best in the different categories. We have four categories, Best Homemade Vanilla, we have the Pecan Recipe category and then we have the specialty category which everyone falls into that doesn't mean vanilla or pecan and so there's three categories then everybody gets to vote for a People's Choice Award which that one really is the big one so if you get the People's Choice, you know you're the most popular," said Martin. Those interested in entering the homemade ice cream may drop off their entries in a Tupperware container by 4:30 p.m. Friday at the First Church. Meal tickets, which include two meats from Next Door Catering, are $20 each and can be purchased at the door.
Allan Dreibrodt was an Ag teacher, who later turned to banking. His family says that Allan lived an amazing life in Seguin despite being diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral
sclerosis), better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. He died in 2017. His son, Brannon Dreibrodt, says that this event honors his dad's memory, but more importantly, it’s a fun night that raises money for a good cause. "Last year, it was amazing. This year, it's going to be even better. We have an amazing

Rincon says it's been since 2014 since Teatro has offered its conjunto program and hopes that this weekend's festival will give them the guidance toward its next step. "We've been getting some requests for conjunto classes once again. So this is kind of a way for us to see if those folks who had expressed interest would come out and support a Conjunto Juan Seguin Festival and if they were available to come and take part in the workshops -- that way we can kind of get a feel for 'hey, you know what, there is an interest. Maybe it's time that the Juan Seguin program in general comes back,'" said Rincon. Rincon says the day's events will wrap up with a night of dancing featuring two local con-

Navarro volleyball splits season opening matches (Cibolo) - Navarro opened the 2019 volleyball season with a 1-1 split against two largers schools at Cibolo-Steele on Wednesday, rallying past Class-5A Alamo Heights for a 3-2 win and coming up short to 6A power Steele 3-0. The Panthers dropped the first two sets to Alamo Heights 25-17, 25-15, but managed to stave off elimination with a 25-23 win in game three. Navarro carried that momentum into the fourth set and tied up the Mules 2-2 with a 25-19 win before surviving the fifth and deciding stanza 15-12. Kelly Helms paced the Panthers' attack up front against Alamo Heights with a team-high 16 kills. Madison McCaig added six, while Haley Hoffman and Ashley Gosch delivered five apiece.
Carolyn Burch collected 27 digs to spark the Panthers defensively. Brumley and Ashley Gosch chipped in with 16 apiece, and Benner came up with nine. Hoffman contributed two solo blocks and one block assist. Gosch and McCaig each recorded a solo block, and Helms had a block assist. Navarro lost to the individual sets to Steele 25-11, 25-9, and 2514. Helms and Hoffman put away five and four kills, respectively, and combined for the team's only block. Brumley and Sam Smith recorded the only service aces. Burch came up with 18 digs, and Brumley finished with 15.
Nelly Brumley led an impressive Navarro effort at the service line with six of the team's 16 aces. Sara Benner added four, and Kaitlin Menchaca sent three over the net.
Navarro was slated to open the Westwood Tournament on Thursday. No finals were available at press time.

Second Annual Allan Dreibrodt Memorial Fundraiser set for Saturday at KC Hall FUNDRAISER continued from Page 2 Dreibrodt says people have been very generous with some of the live and silent auction items that will be up for grabs during Saturday's event. "This year, the stuff that we've got and it's just blowing me away and just so many people coming together and it's not only people who knew him. It's people who just heard about it and they want to be a part of it and it's just blowing me
away some of the stuff that we have for these people to come in and bid on," said Dreibrodt. Dreibrodt says they have put together a really fun and eventful night for those who attend. He says tickets are only $25, and you'll definitely get your money's worth during the night. "I can't remember a night when I had more fun because everybody comes together, a great
dinner, great music, awesome stuff and it's just a lot of fun and you don't get that a whole lot and $25 bucks -- come on? Twenty-five bucks, that's the ticket price. You are going to spend that anyway on a weekend, hanging out doing this, doing that. Why not do that, have fun and have a blast like you were going to anyway but allow that money to go to the kids, to go to the future, to go to agriculture, to go to this community, why not? said Dreibrodt.
Presale tickets can be purchased at Gift & Gourmet in Seguin. Dreibrodt says he can also be contacted for ticket or other information. Call 830-305.6037 for more details. The dinner and dance to support local youth in agriculture gets underway at 5 p.m. at the KC Hall. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. followed by the dance at 7 p.m. and live auction at 9 p.m.

OBITUARIES continued from Page 13 Simons Eldon Jay Simons passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at the age of 82, in Seguin, TX after six months of illness during which he often expressed his discontent with being a “feeble old man”. Eldon was born on January 23, 1937 in Ireton, Iowa. Eldon is preceded in death by his parents Irvin and Inez (Lehman) Simons; brother, Irvin, Jr.; brother and sister in law Carl Lyle and Marvel Simons; sister and brother in law Mima Blanche and Keith Newman; sister, Beverly Cox; ex-wife Dorothy (Foster) Simons, and second love Patsy Mantz. He is survived by his daughter and son in law Becky and Merlin McGuire of Seguin, TX; son, George Simons of Nichols, IA; last love Kathy Rohan of Sayers, TX; brother in law Ben Cox; grandchildren, Brandie Elliott, Tonya (Don) Lick, Torey (Codie) Rohde all of Muscatine, IA and Cody (Megan) Simons of Austin, MN; 11 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and extended family members. Eldon was the youngest of five children and a true “Iowa Farm Boy” who carried those values with him everywhere he went. He never met a stranger and always found something to talk about, particularly his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes. Upon graduation from Sheldon High School in 1956, he and his friend set out to hitchhike to the East coast and back, visiting relatives and getting into a few interesting situations along the way. Fortunately there is a written account for posterity! This trip ignited Eldon’s love of travel and learning. After short stints in the Army and farming at home, he went to work for T.E. Ibberson Company building concrete grain elevators all over the Midwest. Along the way he accumulated many humorous stories of pranks, characters and bad ideas. During one of his job assignments, Eldon met and married his first love, Dorothy. In the late 60’s they settled in Thompson, IA to raise their family, where he was successful in many enterprises including his blacksmith/welding shop; designing and building some of the first hydraulic round bale carriers; building sturdy and efficient hog trailers; building Butler bins; and being there for all the sporting events and 4-H & FFA projects and horse shows that needed to be attended. In the early 90’s, Eldon went back to work for T.E. Ibberson and settled in the Bay Area of Northern California with his second love Patsy. He was always eager to show a California girl what the rest of the country looked like from the seat of a vehicle. She really enjoyed the Iowa summer thunderstorms! With the death of Patsy in 2005, he came to visit his daughter in Seguin and never left. It was here he met his last love and favorite dance partner, Kathy Rohan, who was by his side until the very end. Once again, he became the ultimate tour guide for a willing travel partner. Eldon’s later work with Ibberson Co. allowed him to venture out of the country to Trinidad, China, Vietnam and Canada - where he was the master of building concrete slip forms, trying local cuisine, communicating with his local work crews and gathering more stories. His final enterprise was collecting, cleaning and selling old cast iron and tools – only American made! He worked
almost every weekday up until February and spent his weekends gathering new inventory for his Antique Mall booths. Eldon was a lifelong student who diligently educated himself about the places he went and everything he encountered. He loved life and especially enjoyed gathering with his extended family and friends. As the youngest sibling, he was very close to his nephews - the Newman boys - and was honored to attend as many family events as he could. His stories, laughter and conversation will be missed by all who knew him. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday August 10, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the Seguin Silver Center, at the conclusion of the memorial service there will be a fellowship potluck. Interment will take place on Saturday, August 31, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon, IA. There will be a short graveside service followed by a fellowship lunch at the Sheldon Community Center. Iowa Hawkeye attire is encouraged. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Palmer Mortuary and Cremations located at 1116 N. Austin Street, Seguin, Texas 78155; 830.379.9430. Therapist Says Kids Can Be Traumatized
Possible Measles Exposure At L.A.'s Union Station
(Los Angeles, CA) - The trauma of so many mass shootings isn't isolated to El Paso, Dayton and Gilroy. Los Angeles therapist John Tsilimparis (SIL-em-par-is) says kids can be impacted by overexposure to news coverage. That can cause children to act irritable and edgy and harm their ability to learn. The family therapist says it's important to tell kids that they're safe. However, he does not think parents should call the mass shootings isolated incidents. Because the attacks have happened so many times over the years, many older kids already know it's a real danger.
(Los Angeles, CA) -- Los Angeles County health officials are warning people about a possible measles exposure at Union Station, L.A.'s main railway station. They say a person with measles traveled through Union Station while infectious and they're looking for folks who may have been exposed. The infected person, who's not a local resident, passed through the station on July 23rd in the early afternoon.
Government Pushes Naloxone Prescriptions
New Law Forces Insurance Companies To Pay For Mammograms Starting At Age 35
(Atlanta, GA) -- The government is trying to increase prescriptions of naloxone [[ nuh-laak-sown ]], an overdose recovery drug that saves lives. A CDC report finds that only one naloxone prescription is given for every 70 high-dose opioid users. The gap is particularly prevalent in rural areas. The problem is made worse by the federal government's own policies that require a co-pay on Medicare naloxone prescriptions. The FDA has approved an over-the-counter label for the naloxone nasal spray Narcan but it's unclear if any company has applied.
(Albany, NY) -- Health insurance companies doing business in New York must now cover the expense of annual mammograms for women 35 and over. The new legislation is known as "Shannon's Law," named for Shannon Saturno, a Long Island teacher who passed away in 2016 from breast cancer, when she was just 31 years old. Her father says he has worked hard with so many others to get this bill passed. Governor Cuomo signed the bill into law on Friday. Up until now, most insurance companies were only required to cover annual mammogram screenings for women over the age of 40.

Letter to the Editor Border Crisis? In the 1950s, six of us in the same family either enlisted or were drafted -- four of us ended up in Korea, including this writer. There were many young men barely out of their teens, and included many U.S. reservists from WW2, and many of other countries, who also served fought and many died there in a horrific war, which we were totally unprepared for, which begs many questions and views, this also happened in subsequent wars. Why were we, and many others, there to begin with? The answer is quite simple, to protect Korea and its border with North Korea, a very belligerent communist power, from entering the border, and taking it over. We left over 38,000 young Americans dead there plus over 7,500 MIAs, never to be heard from again, but the border was finally secured despite all these high costs. I cam back on troop ships twice, we were loaded with wounded returnees, and many caskets below decks containing many young casualties, this was the horrible price we paid to protect another nation's borders and sovereignty. Now comes a time for our own country to protect its borders and suddenly it's inhuman, immoral, etc., etc. etc. to protect our own. Have we forgotten what we did in all our forgotten wars? What about all the diseases we conquered 50 years ago? What about the terrorists -- remember the World Trade Center? Is America not worth protecting? What about our laws governing illegal entry, and many other rules and regulations? Can certain people just ignore those? There are also certain people in our country who want a wide open border. Anyone can come and go, then you no longer have a free and safe country. This is a slap in the face of all our young, who fought and died in other countries. Just look at all the cemeteries in all these countries and ours. Check the dates. Most never had a chance to taste life, and we are letting them down! I now implore other fellow veterans and American citizens to take this very seriously, and ask "what did I serve for and do I really care? Norwin H. Vogel Korean War Veteran
