Veterans Resource Fair set for this Saturday Community invited to donate gently used medical equipment for Project MEND (Seguin) -- Veterans and their caretakers are encouraged to mark their calendars for this year's second annual Guadalupe County Veterans Resource Fair. The fair is scheduled for Saturday at the American Legion Post 245. After last year's successful event, organizers say they have called upon even more partners to help provide veterans with the equipment and services that they deserve. In fact, this year, the entire community is being urged to also do its part by donating gently used medical equipment to be repaired and refurbished for distribution to veterans throughout the state of Texas. It is also being asked to share the information about the resource fair with the veterans in their lives whether they be family, friends, employees, neighbors or co-workers. Marisela Gonzales, the county's Veterans Service Officer, says this year, the event is being hosted with the help of the Seguin Veteran Ministry and American Legion. She says all types of services will be made available from ordering their D-D-2-14 or sign-

ing-up for transportation. "What we want to do is anyone who is a veteran or who knows a veteran or is a family of a veteran, we definitely invite them to come. We want them to come because whether it's one table we go to, whether it's multiple tables or whether it's just come and being together and having that community in-

volvement and just getting to know each other, its good. Things are always changing with the VA and things are changing with non-profits and it's important to get that information out to our veterans so they're empowered if they need any services, where to go, who to speak to," said Gonzales. Guadalupe County SO Cold Case Unit seeks information on 27 -year-old murder case (Seguin) -- The 27 year anniversary of the death of a Seguin woman has prompted another look into her murder case. Sgt. Robert Murphy, of the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office special investigations/cold case unit, say on Aug. 18, 1992, deputies responded to the area of FM 775 and Partnership Road for a report of a body lying beside the roadway. They say when they arrived, deputies found Toni Ann Ackerman, 26, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds lying in the bar ditch on the side of the roadway. Murphy says Ackerman was still alive, but succumbed to her wounds before she was able to give any inforToni Ann Ackerman mation on who her killer might have been. "It was a rural part of the county. It was at 775 and Partnership Road which back in 1992, we had far fewer people in the county so it was even less traveled than it is today and a passerby actually found her and drove back home and called 911 because cell phones weren't really available back then so they had to use actual landline telephones to make the phone call," said Murphy. Ackerman had been last seen on Kingsbury Street in Seguin near the R&R Grocery store on that Aug. 18. She is described as having been 4 feet 11 inches tall and weighing about 105 pounds. She had blue eyes, and brown hair. At the time of her death, she was wearing black boots, a red skirt, and a purple top. Murphy says the woman was a long-time resident of the city of Seguin at the time of her death. The Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office is asking for help in finding the killer or killers responsible for her death. Murphy says they would like to bring closure to the family of Toni Ann Ackerman -- a family who has spent these last decades looking for an answer. See COLD CASE, page 3

MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail I.S.G.

Gonzales says as for the medical equipment donation drive, the effort is to help improve the quality of life for persons living with a disability and their caregivers "by providing more medical equipment to more people." "Project MEND is going to be taking the lead on that. They are the state appointed agency to work with refurbishing medical equipment. So if a veteran, regardless of discharge, regardless of disability rating or anything like that -- if they need a medical device for example, a cane, a wheelchair -- they can sign up with Project MEND and get one to them free of charge. This is also a way for the community to get involved if they are not necessarily a veteran but they can come drop off -- we have had scooters, we have had canes -- all kinds of medical devices and they are going to have a huge warehouse personnel there picking it up," said Gonzales. Amy Mcarthy, of the Seguin Veteran Ministry, says often times, it's difficult for many veterans to seek assistance. She says this resource fair is a great opportunity for the rest of us to maybe come on out and pick up information on their behalf. "There's nothing wrong with the veteran's family member from coming here either so they can get the information and take it back home. We are there for that too and that might be the way to open the door," said Mcarthy. Felicia Ramirez, of the American Legion, says the local veterans group is excited about offering the larger venue to veterans during this year's event. She says the larger space makes it the perfect location to host 34 plus vendors.

CALL FOR RATES

"I think it's key for all of us to be in partnership together whether we are a veterans organization or a ministry or all these other agencies. Everybody needs to pull their resources together because you don't know what veterans are going to walk in the door and what they need so you have a cross section of America there to help them," said Ramirez. Participating groups include organizations and businesses such as Texas Veterans Commission, T-Mobile, the Veterans Benefits Administration, DAV, Texas Serves and Survivors Outreach Services. Among those also organizing this year's resource fair is Deacon Victor Garcia of the Seguin Veteran Ministry. Garcia says the resource fair is all about serving and protecting all of our heroes who live right here in Seguin and Guadalupe County as well as surrounding communities. "The focus is on the veteran and the resources that are available to them. In the end to me, it's really

about the community remembering that the veterans have served this country. They answered the call and now it's up to us to ensure that they get the services that they need and it's also not just about the veterans' and their families. It's also about the community understanding what services are out there for these veterans and again, being aware of them and helping that veteran or that family find the resource. For what I do, I do a lot of work with individuals and many times, it's really the family or the individual that is the real catalyst to getting that person to go and get help," said Garcia. The team of organizers also thank the numerous businesses who have also stepped up to support the fair either by providing door prizes or items for a raffle to be held on that day. The free Veterans Resource Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Hall located at 618 E. Kingsbury St. Those wishing to donate medical equipment may also drop it off at the Legion Hall anytime during the event.

New information sought in Guadalupe County cold case murder

COLD CASE continued from page 1 Murphy says the case has gone cold as all investigative leads have been exhausted. "That's why the sheriff has a cold case unit so that these people are not forgotten. We have talked to friends and family and people and at this point, we are reaching out to the folks who were in Seguin back in 1992 who knew Toni -- who may have just that little tiny piece of information that would help us to solve this case," said Murphy. Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office or the Texas Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers Cold Case Team. Those wishing to remain anonymous are encouraged to contact the Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers at 877-403-TIPS (8477). They can also submit a tip online at ww.gccsTIPS.org or P3 Tips App. All information received through Crime Stoppers will remain anonymous.

Twelve similar cases have been reported in Wisconsin and six others in Illinois. In some cases, the patients have needed intensive care and assistance with their breathing. Doctors say all the patients' vaped before being hospitalized, but they're not sure exactly what aspect of their vaping habit caused their illnesses.
