Principal’s Message

Praise be to God for blessing us with another wonderful term in 2023-2024. Term 3 is another testament to God's faithfulness in guiding our students in their journey of growth and learning. Our school is grateful for the opportunity to be a part of each student's educational experience and witness the remarkable progress they continue to make.

Throughout Term 3, our students have demonstrated not only academic growth but also personal and social development. They are no longer the same child who entered our school back in August.

One notable highlight is the Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition, where our Grade 6 students showcased their in-depth inquiries, critical thinking skills, and the ability to take action on issues that matter to them.

The PYP Exhibition serves as an example of how our students are encouraged to explore their interests and passions, engage in meaningful research, and develop a deep understanding of global issues. Witnessing their enthusiasm and dedication during this event reinforces our belief in the importance of providing a learning environment that nurtures curiosity and empowers students to make a positive impact on the world around them.

In addition to the PYP Exhibition, Term 3 was marked by a variety of enriching activities that contributed to the overall growth of our students. As you flip through the pages, you will witness how our students delved into collaborative projects, inquired into their familial background and history, explored nature, or engaged in creative expressions.

We continue to be grateful for the dedication of our teachers, and the support from our parents and the entire school community. We look forward to more collaborations in term 4 as we foster a nurturing environment that inspires the love of learning.

Day!Olympic

Pre-K had an absolute blast diving into the world of 'O' with our epic Olympics Day! We flexed those gross motor skills like never before. Picture this: parachute popcorn madness, where teamwork and coordination popped those balls out in a frenzy! Our obstacle course training paid off big time, with leaps, crawls, balances, and some epic basketball shooting. But wait, there's more! Bowling battles ensued, followed by an adrenaline-pumping balloon run to wrap up the festivities. Who knew learning the letter 'O' could be this exhilarating? We're already gearing up for the next adventure!

Tiny Hands, Big Flavor!

The air in our K1 class was filled with excitement and anticipation as our little learners and some parents came together to celebrate Lunar New Year in a uniquely delicious way! We bonded together through making noodles and dumplings at school. This multisensory experience was not only fun but also rewarding in many ways. Our students and their tiny hands were involved in every step of preparing the yummy feast including cutting vegetables, scooping meat, pulling apart noodles, folding dumplings, and boiling them!

Finally, the feast was ready, and everybody beamed with pride as we sat down and savored the fruits of our labor. Let us continue to embrace diversity in our school and celebrate the unity that Christ has given to all of us.

On the Go with Transportation! How We Organize Ourselves

K2 is learning how daily transportation helps the community. We learn the different modes of transportation; air, land, and water transportation.

We also learn the difference between private transportation and public transportation.

As a part of our learning experience, K2 students had the opportunity to experience public transportation used in Indonesia, which are the angkot and ojek.

They also learn the polite phrases used in Bahasa Indonesia when ordering a ride such as, “Pak/ Bu, saya mau pergi ke SPH” and “Terima kasih Pak/ Bu.” They learn how to pay for their ride too!

It was fun to see their expressions of wonder and excitement in their eyes, because for most of them, it was their first time!

K3’s Life Cycle Discovery!

In our exploration of ‘How The World Works,’ our K3 students are exploring the concept of Life Cycles!

Throughout this unit, we are immersing ourselves in the exploration of diverse life cycles of humans, plants, and animals. Our approaches to learning incorporate activities such as arranging model toys, utilizing prior knowledge to complete organizing tasks, and even participating in collaborative cooking endeavors!

We specifically provided students with the opportunity plant their own mung beans when we learned about the plant life cycle and cook with eggs when we learned about the chicken life cycle! We planted the mung bean seeds in clear cups so that our students were able to observe and track the daily growth of the plant. As for the cooking, we made scrambled eggs and waffles to showcase tangible connections across our unit.

By grasping the concept of life cycles, students are not only cultivating a sense of curiosity and wonder but are also honing in on essential skills such as observation, critical thinking, and problem solving. This hands-on experience aided furthering their knowledge of the life cycle and broaden their knowledge of “How The World Works”

Grade 1

How The World Works

Grade 1 has had a blast learning about animals and their habitats in our UOI unit – How the World Works. Each week, grade 1 students have focused on a different major habitat found around the world. We have learned how living things interact with and live in the habitat that God designed them for. We have learned about rainforests, grasslands, deserts, ice worlds, and seasonal forest. After exploring each habitat, grade 1 has created different art pieces to show their understanding of the biome and the animals that live there. Using coloring, painting, gluing, and cutting, students have demonstrated what is needed in each habitat for living things to survive.

We have also learned about how animals have changed to live in their habitats. For example, we have learned that animals that live in the ice world have special fur or blubber to keep them warm in the cold temperatures. We have loved getting to learn more about the beautiful world that God has created!

Baked with Love

In an inspiring display of compassion and generosity, the grade 2 students recently organized a heartwarming fundraising project for Sang Timur, a special school dedicated to children with developmental disabilities. With enthusiasm, the students hosted a delightful bake sale where they baked and sold different baked goods like cookies, muffins, cupcakes, and more. The event was a success, not only in terms of funds raised but also in fostering a sense of empathy and community spirit among the students. Through this initiative, not only did tthe students contribute to a worthy cause, but they also honed valuable life skills in teamwork, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. We're immensely proud of their efforts and look forward to continuing our support for Sang Timur in the future.

Grade 3

Where are we from and going?

In this unit for grade three, we have been learning about our lineage, our heritage and our family values. We had two wonderful parents come in as our guest speakers and a special guest, baby Ephraim, shared about their traditions, lineage and heirlooms. The students got to learn different values and beliefs their families carry. This unit fell right in the perfect timing with Lunar New Year because the kids got to practice what they learned. For example, some have noodles, some have soup and some have pastries on the morning of Lunar New Year. Why each of their family do things in a particular order or ways. It is amazing to hear the stories of each of our students about their families, making connections and finding similarities among themselves. Our students also learn to value their differences as much as their similarities, through their culture, their heritage, and their value. Our Father in heaven is so wonderful to have put each and everyone of us into this world, with our differences. Let’s celebrate our differences together~!

8

Preserving Traditional Cultural Heritage

In this unit, the 4th graders have been learning how to express ourselves through art and our responsibility to preserve cultural art forms. We learned about different traditional art forms from different cultural backgrounds, such as; Batik, Janggu, Navajo Weaving, Aboriginal Dot Paintings, Wayang Kulit, and more. As we learned about the different traditional art forms, we also learned about the time, effort, care and cultural techniques that go into creating these artworks. By learning about these traditional arts, we also learned how we are responsible for keeping these traditional arts alive for the next generations. To raise awareness about the traditional art forms and to solidify our understanding of the history, we created brochures and visited the Batik Museum to learn more about Indonesian traditional art forms. We even had the opportunity to try using Canting to create Batik. Look at us!

Migration:

It’s Not Just About Moving!

Have you ever moved to a new place?

Do you know that people have been moving places since the Bible times?

The grade 5 students have explored migration stories around the world during the WWPT unit.

Starting with listening to some guest speakers who shared their migration stories, the students continued to do some research based on the migration stories that they were interested in. They researched on the push and pull factors for why people migrate, the impacts of migration, and the responsibility of migrants, communities, as well as the government. We discovered that migrations impact so many facets of life… it’s not just about moving.

After they completed their research, the students designed creative presentations using impra-board to share their findings. 3rd graders, 4th graders, and some 6th graders came and enjoyed their presentations.

Please enjoy some pictures of their sharing!

Grade 6 Exhibition: Come to the Waters!

The Grade 6 Exhibition is the culmination of the students' PYP experience. Students have spent over eight weeks engaging in meaningful, independent inquiry on a variety of topics, from Dayaknese art to French cuisine. The students applied their profiles and skills to help them set and complete goals and overcome challenges.

Here are some of the students' own words about their Exhibition experience:

“What I have enjoyed the most about exhibition is developing the bravery to reach out to others. I had to email an expert for my field trip/interview, and that experience gave me courage to speak up and not be scared.” - Isaac

“Even though I enjoyed doing research, it was incredibly challenging to find trustworthy sources. My goal was to get good grades, but also to present my thoughts to the audience with reliable information.” - Yuseong

“This unit has taught be that art is more than just painting, it is also God's creation. As the bible says, God created everything in this world, which means the animals and many other wonderful things are His "artwork".” -

We are very proud of the Grade 6 students for completing their Exhibition unit and pray that their journey has been rewarding for them.

We invite you to “come to the waters” of PYP Exhibition on March 5 and 6. You are invited to view the students' booths, ask questions, and celebrate their learning journey with them. You can also view the Exhibition Library Guide at the link below, which will be active March 5:

Digital Citizenship: Teaching Students to Use Technology Responsibly

Technology is rapidly becoming more and more pervasive in our daily lives. It plays an essential role in enhancing the learning experience of students. With the increasing use of technology in our daily lives, children must learn how to use it effectively and responsibly from a young age.

Technology in PYP

In PYP, technology is incorporated into various subjects to help students understand and explore concepts more interactively and engagingly. For example, students can use educational software, online resources, and apps to learn about different subjects such as math, science, and social studies. They can also use technology to create multimedia presentations, design projects, and collaborate with their classmates on different tasks.

In addition to these benefits, technology also helps students develop essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. By using technology to access information and resources, students learn to analyze and evaluate information to make informed decisions. They can also use technology to express their ideas and thoughts in unique and creative ways, which helps them develop their communication and presentation skills.

Technology in SPH

SPH continuously invested in digital platforms that enhance the process of teaching and learning. Some of the platforms include Seesaw, IXL, BrainPop, XtraMath, Code.org, Newsela, Typing Club, Epic, BukuAku, Dash Robot, and many other free platforms.

Seesaw is the learning platform that was created for teachers, students, and families. Seesaw offers a variety of tools, resources, and curricula with interactive lessons, digital portfolios, and two-way communication features that provide continuous visibility into the student's learning journey to support and celebrate their learning. IXL is a platform for learning and practicing

Mathematical skills. This learning platform meets the unique needs of each learner. It caters to kindergarten to grade 12 curriculums. It also has personal guidance and real-time analytics.

BrainPop is an educational resource with some cool videos, interactive quizzes, games, and activities. They have many animated lessons for Science, Social Studies, English, Math, Arts & Music, Health, and Technology. Xtramath is used for practicing number facts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students could be given different goals for practicing their number facts.

Digital Citizenship

There are many platforms that provide interactive games and help students to be creative, engage in learning, enjoy, and love learning. Our hope is not only for students to grow in technology but also to learn to be responsible digital citizens in this digital

Embracing technology is important as much as helping students to be responsible. We strive to teach our students to be respectful and mindful of others when communicating online, considering the feelings and opinions of others before posting or commenting. They are also taught to be aware of the potential dangers of the internet, such as cyberbullying, scams, and identity theft.

Technology at Home

We believe that we should work together to help students become responsible digital citizens. There are potential risks of overuse or inappropriate use of technology that we, teachers, parents, and families should be aware of. Here are some tips for you to help our students to be a responsible digital citizen in this digital era:

Be consistent: set clear limits and boundaries when using devices. Supervise device use.

Make sure your child has a rich and active set of 'real world' activities.

Ensure your child has a healthy daily routine. Take time to learn about the things your child does online. Be a good digital role model yourself.

Technology is a valuable tool in PYP that can help students learn, explore, and create in new and exciting ways. When used effectively and responsibly, technology can enhance the learning experience and prepare students for success in the digital age.
