Message from the Head of School Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever! 1 Chronicles 16:34 Dear SPH family and friends, On the fourth Thursday in November, families across the US gather to celebrate the Holiday of Thanksgiving. We typically celebrate with A LOT of food! Traditional dishes include turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy (or rice), lots of different casseroles and cherished family dishes – one of my favorites, green-bean casserole, and lots of desserts typically centered around pumpkin pie. Just thinking about the feast makes my mouth water. The tradition has roots of early settlers weathering the hardships of leaving Europe and establishing a new home and life in the “colonies,” giving thanks for their survival. Around the Thanksgiving table, families often make time for reflecting on God’s faithfulness and mercy over the previous 12 months. While we all acknowledge we should be thankful daily for how God leads us and provides both in difficulty and blessing, there is something special about intentionally considering how He has led as an extended family and reflecting on how different experiences have been used to grow us. Thanksgiving requires reflection, something we may not do often enough. As we come to the end of November, I want to thank the Lord for the SPH family and all He is doing in our midst. I pray you find time to consider how you have changed over the past several weeks and months and consider how the Lord may be using the challenges and opportunities in your life to grow you into the person He desires you to be. Rainy day adventures Pre-Kindergarten Explores The Letter ‘R’ In our Pre-Kindergarten this month, our little adventurers had a delightful experience on their special 'Rain Day,' a key chapter in their letter-learning expedition focusing on the letter 'R.' To set the stage, our dedicated pre-K teachers created an alternative rain activity for the students in the Kindy garden, adding a touch of creativity to the day. Equipped with their raincoats and armed with umbrellas, the children stepped outside to embrace the rain. Amidst the gentle pitterpatter of raindrops, they danced around, enjoying the simple joy of raindrops falling. The best part was realizing how pleasant rain can be. It wasn't just about learning 'R'; it was about having fun and appreciating the simple things, like the sound of rain and the happiness it brings. In this lesson, kids found out that even on a rainy day, there are lots of laughing and learning can still be enjoyed!

Exploring Recycling to Protect Our Planet K3 Field Trip to Tzu Chi Recycling Center This month, our K3 students embarked on an exciting study trip, diving into the captivating realm of waste management. As part of their "Sharing the Planet" theme in the ongoing Unit of Inquiry, the young learners took a field trip to Tzu Chi's recycling center at Gading Serpong. This hands-on experience proved to be a valuable opportunity for the students to actively engage in responsible recycling practices. Amidst the hum of the recycling center, our little eco-warriors eagerly learned how to recycle items like water bottles and used paper. Far from mere observers, they actively participated, gaining practical insights into the recycling process. The trip not only deepened their understanding of various types of waste but also emphasized the critical role of recycling in caring for our Earth. Our K3 students returned with newfound knowledge and a sense of responsibility, ready to make a positive impact in preserving our precious planet.

Pancake making & literary adventures Grade 1 English Classroom Activity Did you ever imagine that the art of making pancakes could seamlessly intertwine with the world of procedural writing? Indeed, they can. This month, our Grade 1 students discovered they can delve into the delightful world of pancake-making while also learning how to write clearly. This hands-on activity served as a practical application of their understanding of procedural writing in their English class. Procedural writing helps students practice giving clear, step-by-step instructions, improving their listening and writing skills to set the stage for paragraph writing mastery by the end of Grade 1. Our students had a hands-on experience, watching a live pancake-making demo, cooking with peers, and documenting the steps in class. Beyond the delicious aromas of pancakes, this activity aligns seamlessly with their exploration of healthy habits in their Unit of Inquiry. The end result? Not just any pancakes but nutritious fruit pancakes! Through this tasty adventure, our Grade 1 students are not only becoming procedural writing pros but are also cultivating an appreciation for the art of cooking and healthy living.

Dribble and score! Junior School SPH Cup Basketball The JS SPH Cup Basketball season has concluded, leaving our junior school buzzing with excitement and team spirit. This unique competition allowed students to showcase their basketball skills and sportsmanship while fostering unity, teamwork, and resilience. Beyond wins and losses, the interschool contests instilled values like discipline and healthy competition that extend far beyond the court. Interacting with other schools in the JS SPH Cup broadened our students' horizons, exposing them to diverse playing styles and strategies. It's not solely about winning; it's about deriving lessons from each match, adapting to new challenges, and appreciating the unique strengths that each opposing team brings to the court. Basketball, as a sport, offered physical and mental benefits, enhancing cardiovascular fitness, coordination, and promoting a healthy lifestyle. The strategic elements of the game sharpened cognitive skills like decisionmaking, spatial awareness, and teamwork. As the final buzzer marked the end of the season, we extend our gratitude to our coaches for their dedication. Their tireless efforts not only cultivated skilled basketball players but also shaped resilient and disciplined individuals prepared for challenges beyond the court. The JS SPH Cup has not only celebrated athletic achievements but has fostered growth, unity, and lasting lessons for our junior school community.

OUR PAG SECONDHAND SHOP IS BACK! Parents Activities at SPH LV At our school, we view parent involvement as more than a partnership; it's a vibrant synergy that enhances the entire learning journey. To cultivate this collaborative spirit, we actively foster parent engagement through diverse activities that extend beyond the classroom. Our commitment goes beyond merely involving parents; it's about creating a space where they can connect, network, share experiences, foster growth, and ultimately, feel a deep sense of belonging within our school community. One noteworthy initiative facilitating this connection is our Parents Advisory Group (PAG). Through PAG, we offer parents the opportunity to actively participate in and host engaging activities throughout the school year. Among these activities, the PAG Secondhand Shop stands out as a unique and eagerly anticipated event. The PAG Secondhand Shop is more than just a chance for parents to declutter; it's a meaningful opportunity for them to give back to the community. By selling a variety of secondhand goods, parents contribute to sustainable practices and offer affordable options for our community members. Celebrating indonesian culture Bulan Bahasa 2023 This month marks the eagerly anticipated return of the Annual Bulan Bahasa event at our international school, and the excitement is contagious! Far more than a routine affair, our celebration of culture and tradition is a vibrant cornerstone of our identity at SPH LV. The Bulan Bahasa festival, a cherished tradition, distinguishes our school by offering a unique opportunity to dive into the rich tapestry of Indonesian culture stretching from Sabang to Merauke. Our commitment goes beyond language learning; it extends to exploring the history, heritage, customs, and incredible diversity that define Indonesia.
