Grade 6 | Where We Are in Place and Time

By Mr. Eduardo

For the Where We Are in Place and Time unit, Grade 6 has been investigating various ancient civilizations, from ancient Sumer to China to Rome. They have been honing their social studies skills by making maps and timelines. They’ve evaluated the impact their civilizations had on the world today. It is all a part of the central idea: Past civilizations have contributed to present-day societies. Through the study of artifacts, geography, stories, primary and secondary sources, students have developed an appreciation of history.

For their summative task, Grade 6 produced information reports focusing on a specific feature of their selected ancient civilization. This challenged them to develop their research and writing skills. Their findings were quite unique. Samantha shared that she was surprised to learn that Greece was not good for farming. Green pointed out that the police in ancient Egypt used trained monkeys to apprehend criminals! Reflecting on the writing process for the information report, Varo explained that he learned how to write a better thesis, hook, introduction, and conclusion.”

Our studies in this unit also connect with biblical worldview for this unit and our Biblical Studies lessons on the providence of God. God is the God of history. Learning about His dealings with ancient civilizations helps us understand that God orchestrates all events, providentially guiding history to the time when “every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord” (Philippians 2:9-11).
