ECE Students Performance in Summarecon Mall Bekasi Personal Project by Grade 10 Students

FOREWORD Dear Victorians,

Liam Hammer Academic Advisor

One month into Semester 2 and we are already busy, Grade 12 are completing exam Try Outs, this week we have a Open Day on Saturday, field trips a plenty, our JSFA teams are winning with grace, and some are losing graciously, our PSG have held parents seminars and attended PaLs sessions, we tested our earthquake drill and are beginning to wonder about testing our flooding plan. However, in all of the day to day ‘busyness’ of school I do hope that you take the time to speak with your family and friends, what routines do you have to enable you and your loved ones time to connect ? Do you put your phone away to speak to each other or is your phone in your hand ready to check as soon as there is a pause in the conversation. Our children and students will follow our examples, so make sure we teach our students to control their gadgets and not have their gadgets control them. We know from researchers that direct engagement, that is speaking to each other face to face, is crucial for the development of empathy, the ability to put ourselves in the place of others. If we want our children to grow up as caring and responsible community members, then they need to build their empathy for each other. Finally, Aladdin tickets, please purchase your tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment on your preferred seats!

On Saturday, January 20, 2018, if you happened to be in Sekolah Victory Plus, you would have probably bumped into some Disney characters (both villains and princesses) or superheroes who were walking down school hallway, back and forth on one of the busiest days at school. We could find Maleficent, Mike, Joy, Merida, Olaf, the Egyptian royal family, or even some elite members of Jedi troops. Don't you worry my dear friends, SVP was not under attack. Teachers, parents and students were all dressed up for the ECE last family gathering. This event started with free activities, students could choose anything from face painting to arts and crafts. Then around 9, parents were entertained by the Toddler students' fashion show and performances by Nursery and EY students: Itsy Bitsy Spider (by Nursery Sun and Moon), Ondelondel (ECA traditional dance), Chicken Dance (Nursery Rainbow & Sky), Bunda (ECA angklung), ballet dance and The Lion Sleeps Tonight (ECA

modern dance). After watching t h e s e courageous little performers, parents, students and teachers played some team games where all ECE community members interacted and had fun in the same time. On this special day, they also had a potluck party where they could happily share snacks and beverages together. To end this festive event, Bu Maria announced the costume competition winners. After a lot of thought and consideration involving creativity, originality, and authenticity, the judges (Bu Aini, Bu Early and Bu Desi) decided that the family winners were Ameesha's as Jedis (Toddler), Peter's as football players (Nursery), Jeshua's as superheroes (EY1) and Anissa Goh's as Greek gods (EY2). We also had favorite family winners which were Aline's as witches (EY2) Syaheen's as Egyptian royals (EY2), and Quincy's as primary students (EY2). On behalf of the ECE team, we would like to thank everyone who participated and made this event a success. Bravo team! prepared by Ibu Gita Tondok, Nursery Year Leader Ibu Harvia Rini, Toddler Year Leader

EY 1 STUDENTS EXCURSION TO PIZZA HUT In line with our current UOI, How we organize ourselves, with our Central idea: “many products go through a process of transformation before being used by society”, EY 1 students visited Pizza Hut. There, they learnt the process of making pizza. When they arrived at the place, they listened to the presentation about sizes and varieties of pizza, they also learnt about the distribution of pizza for the delivery order service. After the presentation, the students went to the kitchen to experience the process of making their own pizza. They were given the dough, which was ready to use. First step they did was to flatten it using the tool. Right after that, they spread tomato sauce on the dough and sprinkled toppings (grated cheese, sausages and meat balls) on it. For the next step, after they had finished with the toppings, they put the pizza in the oven. At the end of the visit they took home the pizza which they've made.

EY 1 STUDENTS EXCURSION TO FARMERS MARKET written by Ibu Yoeny Lelyana, EY 1 Homeroom Teacher

EY 1 students are entering the new theme, which is “How We Organize Ourselves”. They learn about how products go through a process of transformation before being used by society. As one of the learning experiences and also to support the line of inquiry, ways products are changed to meet the need of society, they visited Farmers Market, Grand Galaxy Mall, Bekasi. In that supermarket, the students could see and learn about variety of products (flavour, size and packaging). The aim of this activity was to have them being inquirers about the reason why people create many various products with different packaging, sizes and flavours. To make this learning more interesting, they also bought some products to be

discussed and to be shared. The students were really excited and enjoyed this activity so much. 4

NURSERY LEARNING CELEBRATION written by Ibu Gita Tondok, Nursery Year Leader

T

ime flies indeed, and it has been six months that Nursery students have spent their learning journey in Sekolah Victory Plus. To celebrate the end of second unit under trans-theme 'How We Express Ourselves', these young learners had a learning celebration on Saturday, December 9, 2017. In this event, students showed their understanding that through playing we communicate and develop new understandings. As Bob Keeshan, an American actor, once said 'Play is the work of children. It's very serious stuff'. While playing, children interact with their peers, build selfefficacy, develop socioemotional, communication, psychomotor, cognitive skills and have fun in the same time. All of these benefits were experienced by parents and teachers at this event. It was opened by students' performances which were: '5 Little Ducks' and 'The Wheels on the Bus' by Nursery Rainbow and Sky and 'Hokey

Pokey' and 'Kepala Pundak Lutut Kaki'. After a short presentation of what has been done in classroom, the play began. There were five games in total: tug of war, sarong game, musical chairs, tunnel ball and flipped cushions. It was such a delight to see students collaboratively pulling the rope with all the strength they could possibly muster to compete with the other teams when playing the popular tug of war. The most important thing is they know how to play fairly and feel fine even if they didn't win since they had done their best and had fun along the way. In the sarong game, students worked together with his/her parent, bound by a sarong, and move some plastic balls from one spot to another. In musical chairs, both parents and students had great time dancing around to cheerful music and when the music stopped, grabbed a seat as soon as they could. In tunnel ball, two groups competed to roll a 5

ball under their opened legs as quickly as they could. Pairs of student and parents made a line together, opened their legs, rolled a ball under to their teammate behind them. The last person in line caught the rolled ball, grabbed it, and ran to the front of the line, and repeated the same procedures. The last game, flipped cushions was the battle between two teams, where in an amount of time allocated, a team should work together to flip its opponent's cushions to match its team's colour. The team with the most cushion colors that represented its team colour wins. Everyone loves playing, adults, children, male and female in any shape and size. Parents said that they enjoyed spending time with their child and other families and were craving for another game. Thank you for coming, mommies and daddies. Until we meet again in our next learning celebration.

On Saturday, 27 January 2018, some ECE students were invited to perform at the Yamaha Education Fair, held by Y a m a h a i n Summarecon Mall Bekasi. There were also some students from other schools who were invited to perform in this event. From SVP, we sent some students who participated in our extracurricular activities such as ballet, traditional dance, modern dance, wushu and angklung. The traditional dance students were the first to perform. They 6

charmingly caught the audience's attention with their Ondel-Ondel dance. The ballet students were the next to perform. They danced gracefully to the song 'Fly to Your Heart'. There was Wushu performance where the students could show some stances they have learnt from their Shifu. Then, there was a fabulous angklung performance where the students played angklung beautifully to the song 'Bunda'. The last performance from our ECA, was modern dance. They thrilled the

event goers with their Jungle dance. In addition to our performances, other students from other schools also showed their various talents such as playing musical instruments, singing, dancing and coloring. At the end of the event, the favorite performance of the fair was announced. The angklung performance was chosen to be the favorite performance at the fair. Thank you Yamaha! Thank you students for showing your best!

D

uring library time and related to “Sharing the planet unit of inquiry, Grade 4 students focused on learning about Clean Water. As we know 70% of our world is covered with water but it is not all clean water. Grade 4 students had a short and meaningful field trip to "Penyaringan Air Bersih Kemang Pratama" on January 24th 2018. They went to the destination per class, to have a clear and precise explanation from the resource person. The place is just near our school in Kemang Pratama area. Pak Udi (the resource person) accompanied them and explained how the Kemang Pratama area processes and produces clean water for the community.

written by Ibu Any Fauzianie, Head of Library

The students observed, interviewed, and took notes when they were there. They had formulated questions at our first meeting right after we came back to school earlier in January. Hopefully students have experienced and learned how to preserve clean water and will share this information with others.

Grade 9 Information Session On Thursday January 18th, 2018 SVP invited parents of Grade 9 students to attend the information session. In the event, the parents were informed about three things. First, they were informed about the implementation of the Aptitude Test that has been implemented and the procedures in understanding and reading the result. It is important to give a clear information about how to understand and read the result, because if it is

misunderstood, it will have an impact to the students. Moreover, the parents were also informed about MYP Year 5 because there will be little difference in MYP Year 5 that is the choice of art class. Also, in MYP Year 5, there will be the personal project and how to help students prepare for it. The last, the parents were informed about the important dates for school exams, practice exams and national exams . Written by Bapak Delvi Pardian, Secondary School Counselor

“Best Smile 101: The Importance of Dental Check up” Personal Project by Schalke Anindya Putri 10 Milky way

W

hen we watch television, we usually witness models who smile brightly and confidently for the toothpaste commercials. What normally draws our attention is their clean and shiny teeth. However, this is not a sales gimmick - it does have a strong implicit message. Having beautiful teeth helps boost a person’s confidence and self esteem, because beautiful teeth accompany a beautiful smile as well. So, the primary ingredient to a dazzling and vibrant smile is to always maintain our bright and healthy teeth. The seminar “Best Smile 101: The Importance of Dental Check ups” was held on January 23rd 2018, in Amartha Hall, Sekolah Victory Plus, by a dentist, Drg. Linda Puspita. The seminar focused mainly on why a person must maintain the wellbeing of their teeth, by ensuring twice-ayearly dental check ups. Drg. Linda also pointed out that the primary reason for dental problems is poor dental hygiene. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 90% of school children and nearly 100% of adults worldwide have cavities. Furthermore, 7 out of 10 Indonesians have tooth decay. Compare that to the fact that only 2 out of 10 people regularly visit

their dentists. This certainly shows that most people do not consider dental hygiene a serious matter. We frequently self-diagnose and assume that we have perfectly healthy teeth because we do not usually feel pain as a reaction to those cavities. However, that does not essentially mean that we are safe. It will often require a trip to the dentist to detect dental cavities. This was confirmed at Sekolah Victory Plus where a series of investigations discovered that more than half of Secondary students and teachers in our school claimed that they have perfectly healthy teeth, and hence they did not feel a need to visit a dentist. The seminar was followed up by free dental check ups for 50 people, consisting of students from grades 7 to 11, parents, teachers, and staff. After the dental check ups with dentists from Grand 8 Dental care Clinic, it turned out that they actually have cavities that they were not aware of before. With sponsorship from Unilever, the 50 people received goodie bags consisting of toothpastes, toothbrushes and mouthwash to keep their teeth healthy. Additionally, within the month of February 2018, SVP will start

13

implementing the regular dental check up program for students in grades 7 - 12. The program will be conducted twice a year, and the results from the check up can be obtained during our 3WC’s. In conclusion, this seminar was held to educate the students in grade 710 and secondary teachers, about the keys to dental health. Everybody must aspire to have a confident smile, and it is only possible if we give our teeth exceptional care. And one of the ways is by visiting the dentist twice a year.

MUSYAFAR KUDRI ZAIN Secondary School Physics Teacher

Hello, my name is Musyafar Kudri Zain, I used to be called Afar. I am 28 years old, happily married with twins (boys & girls). I was born in Buton Island, South East Sulawesi, and started living in Jakarta in 2007, where I earned my Bachelor and Master degree on Physics at University of Indonesia.

MAGDA N.T. SIMANJUNTAK Finance & Accounting Staff

Hi, My name is Magda Novitria T Simanjuntak, but you can call me Magda. I am 30 years old and married with two children. I graduated from University of Brawijaya with accounting major. My previous job was as an accounting & finance supervisor at PT FMC Santana Petroleum Indonesia. I like watching serial movies and travelling. I am happy to be a part of Sekolah Victory Plus as I can learn new things. Thank you.

I was previously working at Sampoerna Academy Boarding School Bogor as a Physics Teacher and Halu oleo University as a Geophysics Lecturer, so you can discuss about geology or geophysics with me. Now at SVP I will be teaching Physics. I like to read novels, watch movies, play futsal and sometimes badminton. “Every child is gifted, they just unwrap their packages at different times.”

JULIA BILLIART ANITA ECE Teacher

My name is Julia Billiart Anita Widyastuti. I was born in Semarang, Central Java. Since my earliest school days I have been interested in the pursuit of knowledge and truth, a search which was inspired by my parents and enhanced by my teachers. This has stayed with me into adult life, and I now find myself realizing the importance and beauty of such ideas and principles. My aim therefore is to develop this approach to life and to share it with others through everything I do. In terms of work, this means motivating and encouraging others by my own positive example, doing my best in everything.

NOVYANTI PRIHANDAYANI ECE Teacher

Hi Everyone! My name is Novyanti Prihandayani, but you can call me Ovy for short. I was born and live in Jakarta. I graduated with a bachelor degree from Atmajaya Catholic University – Jakarta, emphasis on Human Resource Management but my passion has always been teaching. I have found that teaching is very rewarding and challenging at the same time, but that doesn't stop me from pursuing teaching and making this the career of my life. At this time, I am filling a position as a temporary ECE teacher at SVP. I enjoy watching movies, and travelling during my free time. I always remember a simple quote that works for me “Don't count the days, make the days count” – Muhammad Ali.

A strong sense of responsibility and a wish to perform 100% at all times resulted in my being elected as 'Millennium Scholar' in the University of PGRI (former IKIP PGRI) Semarang, a position where I was fortunately granted full scholarship for my Diploma Degree. I valued this position for the opportunities and learning experiences in terms of being a responsible scholar while also helping and motivating classmates. English Teaching Major there was an enjoyable experience for me, especially English Literature classes, in which I was fortunate to have caring and inspirational teachers. This love of studying English led to my becoming a teacher in several National and International Schools for the past 17 years, where I last spent my last 7 years teaching both Kindergarten and Primary Level at Kairos Gracia Christian School in West Jakarta. Working for Sekolah Victory Plus will be a great chance for me to both learn and help grow the educational value among the young learners.

Grade 10 Visual Arts Excursion

to MACAN Museum and Galeri Nasional written by Ibu Kania Yuliandini, Secondary School Visual Art Teacher

The Grade 10, Laoshi Orvina, and Ibu Kania in front of Entang Wiharso's and Keith Harring's painting in MACAN Museum

Friday, January 26th, 2018, the Grade 10 students went to MACAN museum in Kebon Jeruk, and Galeri Nasional Gambir for Visual Arts excursion to get a lot of insights about different kinds of artworks from Indonesia and around the world. In MACAN Museum, the students were carefully explained by Kak Widy; one of the education team; about Indonesian art history in dialogue with global art history through 90 artworks of the museum's collection. Not only learning about art history, they also got to explore their artistic side as well. In one corner of the museum, there was an art installation where everyone can get papers and colour pencils to draw while inspired by the beautiful floating garden. Caroline and Johanes of Grade 10 with the drawings they made during The Visual Arts trip to MACAN Museum.

Soon after Friday prayer, they went straight to the other area of Jakarta where most of the Indonesian government office are; Central Jakarta. Across Gambir Station there's a Public Art Institution owned by the Cultural Ministry of Indonesia, called Galeri Nasional where the students were able to enjoy more than 200 well curated artworks. Hopefully, after this excursion, not only the students will appreciate the aesthetic aspects of artworks, but they will also put the arts in historical context.

Grade 10 Personal Project

BATIKED by Jason Briant Irawan On Wednesdays, SVP staffs wear red. Red batik, to be exact, but although the fabric and design seem nice and fitted to wear, I myself think that there is always a chance to make it better. It is important for staffs' attire to be the best as possible, as it is a part of the school's identity. The thought has been around for quite a while, however up to now no changes has been made. I am currently in Grade 10 and I decided to make that change in hopes of bringing it to reality through my Personal Project, I call it Batiked by Jason Briant Irawan with a goal to successfully design, create, and produce a better batik school uniform based on the school staffs' desires and school philosophies. People say that this project is nearly impossible to be done, not to mention that I am only a tenth grader, and I agree. It is indeed a really big project, however I do believe that with a strong will and persistence, everything would be possible to be done. A proof would be my two designs I have proposed to the school, that received positive responses from the school's Senior Management Team and staffs. It was not

Presenting to SMT

a smooth sailing along the way, as I have gone through several obstacles throughout the process. The obstacles are mostly about experience. It was my first time proposing an idea to an institution, it was my first time designing a batik uniform, and it was basically my first time doing this huge of a project. This project has been a dream come true for me. Basically, I am truly honored to be told that there is a possibility for one of my designs to replace the current batik in 1 or 2 years. Last but not least, I would like to say that this dream would have not been brought to reality without all the supports that I have received from SVP SMT, my parents, Ibu Budi as my advisor, my expert, God Almighty, and other more parties that I could not mention one by one. Once again from the deepest of my heart, thank you!

By looking at those criteria, SVP scholarship is not only emphasizing on the academic performance, but also put consideration on the students' commitment to learning beyond classroom. It means we are also searching for students who have good leadership skills, applies actions into their surrounds and living the Learner Profiles and CHAMPION values. These criteria made us examine the students in a holistic perspective. Quoting Dr Kathleen M. Quinlan from Oxford Learning Institute, University of Oxford in her journal “Developing the whole student: leading higher education initiatives that integrate mind and heart” said that “The notion of holistic student development encompasses academic learning and the development of skills such as problem-solving and analysis while simultaneously recognizing other aspects of students as people who are growing and maturing affectively (emotionally) and morally.” Our scholarship students are proficient in academic and other aspects.

How to Care for a Library Book

Libraries provide a great service by letting you check out and read their books for free. To make sure everyone in your community or school has the opportunity to read the books in a library's collection, it's important to keep the books you borrow in good condition. You can do your part by handling library books properly, protecting them when you're not reading them, and dealing with any damage you find.

A. Handling Library Book

Return your book on time. In many cases, libraries have only one copy of each book. If you keep your book too long, it's not fair to the next person who needs it. Honor the due date. If you receive a recall notice, bring your book back as soon as possible to the library.

Wash your hands before touching your library book. The slightest bit of dirt or oil on your hands can discolor or damage the pages of book. Work up a good lather with the soap and rub your hands together.

Renew your library book if you're not finished with it by the due date. You may email the librarians or renew

finger and thumb on either side of the top of the spine. Then, pull it toward you. Avoid pulling on the top edge of the spine with your index finger only. You coul d end up tearing the spine.

Protect your book while you're transporting it. Put the library book in the library bag (book bag) before taking it out of the library. If you don't have one, ask the librarian. Avoid stuffing paperback books in your pockets, where they could bend or get torn. Keep pens, pencils, highlighters and markers in a separate compartment from your book if you put it in your library bag.

Don't write in your library book. Avoid marking the pages or binding with ink, marker, or highlighter. Don't even make light pencil marks. You can unintentionally damage the pages when you erase.

Animals can chew your book. Small children can draw on it or tear the pages. If you share your home with animals and/or children, place your book inside the library bag on a tall shelf, dresser, and bookcase when you're not reading it.

MEET SVP ALUMNI

Interview with

5th Batch of SVP Alumni

S

abira (Aira) joined SVP in Grade 1 Primary School (2004/2005). She was involved in many activities at school, managed her time carefully between studying and swimming exercise. She was a champion in swimming competitions that were organized in and outside West Java. Her talent in swimming also became one of many criteria for her to pass the Admission procedures in George Washington University, USA. After graduating from SVP- Grade 12, Sabira (Aira) continued her study at George Washington University (GWU), USA; at the faculty of Economics and Political Science.

She enjoys learning at the campus and she finds that a lot of skills taught in SVP help her in her study. Through messanger, SVP got a chance to chat with her to know more about her activities at the campus. Aira mentioned that she has developed her communication skills since studying in SVP. It helps her, especially now, as she works at the immigration section of her current university, International Services office of GWU. S h e u s e s h e r communication skills especially in dealing with students who happen to be rude or demanding. She also learned how to properly communicate with people with different

backgrounds and be courteous with other people. Her working position as the front desk/back office student staff in GWU requires her to be responsible in scanning, shipping and sorting files of student's immigration documents, answering general questions regarding immigration and also helping students with their requests for the office. She is also going to be in charge of the social media team of the office. We are glad to hear Aira's experience in her campus and wish her the best for her study.

As we know, Indonesia is currently facing the Extraordinary Occurrence (Kejadian Luar Biasa - KLB) Diphtheria in some areas, including in Bekasi. To overcome this matter, the Ministry of Health responded rapidly with Outbreak Response Immunization (ORI) in 12 districts / cities in 3 provinces that experienced outbreaks such as Banten, West Java, and DKI Jakarta. According to the Minister of Health, the Disease Outbreak occurs because of the immunity gap among residents of a region.(Kemenkes, 11 Desember 2017. The first stage of diphtheria vaccine at SVP has been successfully implemented, while the second phase will be held on February 13th and the third stage will be done in July or August. The implementation of this vaccination can not be separated from the cooperation of Sekolah Victory Plus with Rawalumbu Public Health Center, Elisabeth Hospital and Rawa Lumbu Hospital.

To support the ORI program implemented by Bekasi City Health Office, Sekolah Victory Plus in cooperation with Puskesmas Rawalumbu held the Diphtheria Vaccination for ECE, Primary and Secondary students. PSG BLOOD DONATION “Every Blood Donor is a hero...”

A

Blood Donation will cost you nothing but it will save a life. If you are a blood donor, you are hero to someone, somewhere who received your gracious gift of life. Blood donation is part of our PSG Care Commission bi-yearly routine program. It's not only our routine but through this even we learn to be more caring for each other and make us more healthier. The activity was held On Wednesday, 6 December 2017. Of the 160 people who registered, 121 attended to the event. After the participants filled out the forms that contain their health history, the PMI staff did physical check and about 350 cc of blood was collected from each eligible donor. By the end of the afternoon, we were able to collect 89 blood bags. Thank God, the number increased 15% from our last blood donation on May 2017.

Thank you to PMI Bekasi, SVP Team, PSG Commissions, Parents and all donors who made this event possible. We hope to gather more donors on our next event in May 2018. You don't have to be somebody's family member to donate blood. Donate your blood for a reason, let the reason to be life. Small thing, big impact. Thank you. by Vera Sisca for Care Commission
