Aladdin the Musical: A Magical Night in SVP
FOREWORD Dear Victorians, In some ways I cannot believe it is already the end of Term 3. We literally have 10 weeks of school left in the Academic Year 2017-2018. I know Term 4 will be busy, we have Run for Victory, 1,000 Guru's seminar, national exams, A level Cambridge exams, End of Year performances, Graduations, PYP Exhibition exhibition, 20th anniversary celebrations, PSG Donor darah among the 'normal' school life. Earlier this week I was procrastinating because I had an assignment for my own studies due, and watching a TED talk video on, of all things, procrastination. (Google Tim Urban Ted Talk, if you are interested). Anyway, what struck me, was a graphic he displayed at the end. It was the average number of weeks in a person's life. Each small box represents one week, all of those boxes together equals one life. (assuming you live to old age.)
APRIL 2018 IMPORTANT DATES 2 Students ON 2-5 Grade 9 School Based Exam 6 Religious Activity 7 World Health Day 7 Run for Victory 9-12 Grade 12 Ujian Nasional (UN) 10 Primary School Morning Tea 10-12 Grade 10 Scout Camp 13 School OFF 14 Isra Miraj

It does not look that big, particularly when you consider how many weeks are already gone ! It's about 3,500 weeks. How are you using each week? Are you wasting them away or are you making the most of each week? As I said at the start, we only have 10 more weeks of this school year, how will you be using each week of that ? EY 2 LEARNING CELEBRATION In the unit, 'How We Express Ourselves', EY 2 students learnt to use different kinds of media to express their feelings and ideas. All the students were totally engaged in the learning experiences. We started with exploring different kinds of media to manipulate. Next, they learnt how to interpret their own artwork and those of others. As their summative assessment, they became event organizers whose duty was to organize a birthday party for their teacher. It was started with grouping and brainstorming of what a birthday party needs. They listed things they needed such as decorations, birthday hats, goodie bags, invitations and some performances. The students participated with great enthusiasm in the preparation process. The interdisciplinary learning also happened here. In Mathematics, the students learnt about 3-D shapes that they could use in making decorations and a birthday hat. They also learnt to read a calendar which they could then apply in setting the date and
writing the invitation. In English, they learnt to use experience as stimulus when writing or drawing. They applied their skills in listing what they needed to prepare for the birthday party. In Music, they learnt to create Indonesian and English songs to entertain the guests and the birthday girl. In Physical Education, they learnt to create basic movements in dancing to entertain the guests. In Visual Art, they learnt scribble, doodle, line painting, 3D art, clay sculpting and collage techniques that could be used to create the decorations. In ICT, they learnt to create a photo slide show using iMovie to be played during eating time. In the end, all the skills that they have learnt in various subjects can be used in a real life experience. It was so exciting to see both the students and the parents enjoyed the party that had been designed by the students.

Sharing the Planet is the current unit EY 2 is studying. The central idea is that plants sustain life on earth and play a role in our lives. For tuning-in EY 2 students visited Citra Niaga Garden near the school to explore why plants are necessary for human. At the garden they felt experienced the different feelings when they were in places with trees and without trees. This is in line with our learning approach, which is Inquiry-based and problem-based learning, that we've been applying collaboratively with the students to be curious. Then, they found out the problem and found the solution. They have suggested that we need to grow more trees, stop deforestation and conduct campaign about this matter in order to increase awareness. written by Ibu Fenty Julianti, EY2 Homeroom Teacher
Congratulations to one of Victorians from Primary School, Tristan, who received the 1st place for Olimpiade Sains Nasional - Math Category at Kota Bekasi. We wish him all the best for competing other schools in West Java Region.

Nursery Learning Celebration
In our third unit of inquiry ( H o w We O r g a n i z e Ourselves), Nurser y students learned how p e o p l e re s p o n d t o different situations and conditions of their surroundings. To improve their knowledge of this unit, they had fun and enjoyed the activities that we had, such as playing in t h e ra i n , p i c n i c k i n g , swimming, school tours and an evening class. As a culmination of their learning journey, Nursery students had a Learning th Celebration on Friday, 16 March. They sang “Mr. Golden Sun” and
“Weather” songs for their opening performance. After an explanation of the unit from their teacher, they had a fashion show. They confidently showed off their outfits that represented the particular season they had chosen. They walked like professional models on the catwalk. They were so awesome! Right after the fashion show, they went back to their parents and had a Gallery Walk. In this session, Parents asked some questions of the students, such as: what season they represented? What can they see during

a particular season, what does it feel like? And what do people usually wear and do during that season? In the end, the parents were assigned to give feedback and reflections about the event. Take the COURAGE to be CHAMPIONs written by Ibu Theofany Melyana, ECE Vice Principal Ibu Dewi Anggraeni, ECE Teacher
Courage plays an important aspect of each child's character development. Having courage helps children to persevere against challenges, and in the process it raises their self-esteem. When children feel good about themselves and see that they have the personal power to make courageous choices, they are more likely lead to successful lives. Some of our young learners showed their courageous values by confidently taking part in rd some competitions held by other schools. On the 3 March 2018 Tiffany, Aline, Laura, Arzel and Derrick
Having an experience to join in competitions is a great opportunity to grow and sharpen good characters. Children learn to be courageous in trying new things, push themselves to show their best effort by trying their best, show positive attitude and be open minded in accepting any result given. Last but not least, of course, never give up! Winning or losing is not always the main goal of joining competition. Above all, the learning journey that takes place is more than just a valuable
“All your dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them” - Walt Disney participated in a spelling bee competition. All of them gave their best effort and showed how resilient they were. Before the competition, they joined the daily practice for almost a month. It was a challenging and tiring process for them, but they were principled and could manage themselves to keep the spirit up. During the practice they shared their enthusiasm and laughter and gave their best. Another risk taker is Glory Berlian from EY 2 Jupiter. She was invited to join PORSENI PAUD (Pekan Olahraga dan Seni) on the 3rd of March 2018 in Revo Town Bekasi. Glory represented our school for a solo singing competition. Grade 1 Excursion to Museum Penerangan th
On Tuesday, March 13 , 2018, Grade 1 students had an excursion to Museum Penerangan, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Jakarta. It supports the learning experiences of our ongoing Unit of Inquiry, “Ways and system in which we communicate have varying degrees of effectiveness. Students had a fun, exciting and joyful day at Museum Penerangan. The first activity was observing the museum. Students divided into 2 big groups to observe the museum with 2 tour guides for each group. On the first floor, students observed the different forms of communication used before the digital era such as film, radio, television, traditional media communication, newspapers and 17 statues of Indonesian pioneers of communication. Each form of communication was explained in detail by our tour guides. Most of the students saw the different forms of communication, used in the 19thcentury, for the first time. On the second floor, the students saw dioramas of people gathering information and communicate with each other. How people communicated in the past showed that there were effective ways to communicate by meeting the person and talk. On the third floor, we visited a place where Boneka Si Unyil is displayed. There is a small stage and there are many puppets of Boneka Si Unyil characters. There is also a display and steps on how to create a puppet of Boneka Si Unyil. The last activity at the museum Penerangan was watching a movie in the mini theater about students who spend their holiday visiting Museum Penerangan. Students were encouraged to visit the museum in Jakarta especially in TMII where they can study more about Indonesian history. After that we had lunch at Anjungan Jawa Tengah and then went back to school. Overall, it was really an interesting activity for our first graders. Students showed enthusiasm and curiosity during the excursion and they learnt so much about different forms of communication, communication methods, and the change of communication system to suit present societies. 8

WORLD SCHOLARS CUP written by Ibu Fenty H. Gultom, Economics & Business Studies Teacher
The annual World Scholar's Cup has begun; it's another new year with the same or even more excitement especially with this year's theme 'An Untangled world'. This enthusiasm and excitement are also felt by the number of our parents coming to the parent information session on Thursday, 8 March 2018 in Sadewa room. The session went well, and we could see that our parents have positive feeling towards this club. An important highlight that was shared on that session was the date of the Global Round which is very close with the Idul Fitri day, nevertheless it didn't curb the enthusiasm and willingness of our parents to register their children for this competition. Thank you Parents and Sekolah Victory Plus for the endless support for our children.
Grade 4 Excursion to Museum Nasional and Museum Bahari prepared by Ibu Glory Sianipar, Grade 4 Celebes Homeroom Teacher
On March 7th 2018, Grade 4 students went on an excursion to the Museum Nasional and the Museum Bahari. The objective of the excursion was to find out the reasons for exploration as stated in the first line of inquiry of the second trans-theme for this second semester which is 'Sharing the Planet'. We decided on the Museums as our destination because we believed the students would gain a lot of information related to the central idea of this unit: Exploration leads to discovery and develops new understandings. As we had expected, the students were very enthusiastic to learn about exploration in the two museums. They took pictures, recorded interviews and asked a lot of questions. The weather was quite hot and humid and there was no air conditioner in Museum Bahari. But that did not stop the students from exploring the whole museum. They were amazed by the things that were on display and everything the guide told them.

T
he school production of a musical is a bi-annual program that is organised by the secondary school division at SVP. After successfully performing King and I (2016) and Green Concert (2017), this year Aladdin was the title that was chosen by the team. Directed by Pak Dasrizal and Pak Chrys as musical director, the production took place in Amarta Hall on February 24, 2018. The show itself was almost fully booked by parents, students, and musical enthusiasts. The committee for this production successfully organised the event including the venue, decoration, props, lighting, IT, costumes and many other components. However, the preparation for this successful event took 6 months.
Auditions
With the musical chosen, the next stage was casting the students. After getting the license from Disney, the auditions were conducted. Many students wanted to be main cast, supporting cast, ensemble, and dancers. The audition resulted in Tama as Aladdin, Annieza as Princess Jasmine, and many extraordinary students cast in other roles.
At first, rehearsals were held only once a week. The practice included role distribution, script reading, character development, as well as vocal and acting workshops. Simultaneously, the orchestra musicians were practicing the song and Visual Arts students started to create the set and all props.
Rehearsals
The practice itself took less than 7 months. Therefore, the committee tried hard to maximise the time in order to perform a decent show. When the date was getting closer, the practice was more intensive than before. With full support from the school, parents, coaches, and other parties, finally the students were ready to perform.
Matinee Show
It has been the tradition at SVP to have a matinee show which is also two days before the gala show, known as dress rehearsal. The Matinee show usually refers to a performance conducted in the afternoon. In this show, it was the first time that the entire cast performed with the set, props, and orchestra. The show was witnessed by the whole school, including teachers, students, staff, and many others. After the matinee show, the cast received constructive feedback which was to be applied in the gala show.
On this day, the school building was alive with the magic of Aladdin, the Musical. The lobby was full of red carpet and a photo booth: on the second floor the ticketing spot was well organised, and Amartha hall was decorated very beautifully to support the magic of the show.
Gala Show
The performance ran very well, the jokes were well delivered. Everybody enjoyed the show especially when the big numbers such as Arabian Nights and A Whole New World were sung by the cast. After the credits, the audience gave a standing ovation for the hard work of each person contributed in the show. At the end of the show, one of the parents said “I always attend SVP's school productions, and this Aladdin is the best of all. That night was really magical for everyone including students, parents, teachers, and musical enthusiasts. It is inevitable that there is room for improvements to perform better productions in the future. However, through this Aladdin the Musical, secondary students and teachers had proven that by hard work and collaboration, they could produce a high quality show. See you in the upcoming productions!

The LPDP (Lembaga Pengelola Dana Pendidikan) Scholarship Winner
I believe, everyone has the same chance to succeed. However, as a child of a middle-low family, I always needed to struggle more than some others. I started this journey when I was still in high school. I have a dream, that one day, I can study abroad. Feel the cold of the snow, meet people from all around the world, be a global citizen. I held that dream for years, while busy improving my skills by joining some competitions, being involved in many organizations, and becoming a volunteer for some events - things that I believed would help me to achieve my dream. One day in 2015, my lecturer introduced me to LPDP - a scholarship for Master and Doctoral degrees from the Ministry of Finance, which gives fully-funded scholarships including tuition fee, accommodation, flights, insurance, and living allowance. Sounds interesting? Yes, indeed. But I had to compete with nearly 15.000 excellent students from all across the country.
I needed to find a way to fill all the documents required : TOEFL, drugs-free certificate, tuberculosis-free certificate, letter of recommendation, etc. I grateful that I met Pak Doddy and Ibu Any Fauzianie who was very kind to write a letter of recommendation for me. In short, I registered myself. Nearly 5000 applicants failed to pass this stage. Luckily I was not one of them. Next, I needed to face the online assessment which is a psychology test. I was afraid, because If I failed, I wouldn't have any chance to continue my application. Over 5000 applicants fell at this stage. Fortunately, I've talked to Ibu Mayang Gita Mardian (Primary School Counselor) before the test. She explained many things and gave me some tips. Thanks for that, Miss Mayang. I was one of the 4290 lucky people to go to the final stage. The final stage consisted of an essay on the spot, leaderless group discussions (LGD), and interviews. I needed to be well-prepared. So I read newspapers and watched every showing of
the news 3 months before the test, as questions might well appear in LGD and essay on the spot. Being reflective about my writing skills, I forced myself to write an essay about every single news item that I read. I also practiced doing the LGD with other applicants, and did some interview simulations with some friends. Thank you Pak Budhianto (VEC), as he is one of the best interviewer during my practice. Your feedback meant a lot to me to help me improve. I did not want to lose this golden opportunity, so I prepared everything very carefully. I did deep research about the campus, made a campus-comparison (to make sure the interviewer knew that my choice is the best one), read my study plan again for the last time, and prepared all the documents. The day finally arrived. I was interviewed by two professors (one of them is an Alumni of McGill University - my dream campus), and a psychologist. The interview took

45 minutes, continued by essay writing and LGD. (Visit m y b l o g i n : septiansugara.tumblr.com for the full interview story.) After waiting for a month, I got the announcement that I had passed the final stage. I was beyond happy. I texted my mom, 'Bu, i'm going to Canada' with tears in my eyes. I still can't believe it finally happened. This experience motivated me to share : Whoever you are, just dare to dream big, Victorians. Because the universe is with them who strongly believes in their dream. “No matter how your heart is grieving, if you keep on believing, the dream that you dream will come trueDisney
MEET SVP ALUMNI
Nathan did not join any course to prepare him passing the exams. He said that he just put 100% attention during lessons and always finished tasks earlier than the deadline. After graduating from SVP, he continued his study in Te c h n i s c h e U n i v e r s i t a t Munchen (TUM) in Germany at the Faculty of Agriculture, majoring in Renewable Resources and Bio Energy. He graduated in 2016 and continued his studies at the University of Hohenheim, taking the same faculty. Nathan mentioned that it is important to know where and what to learn after graduating from Secondary School since the person is still at Grade 10 or 11. This helped him to be focused on his goals and it guided him while studying. Below are the other tips that Nathan shared with Victorians for graduating successfully and continuing to study abroad: 1.Start looking for your university from Grade 10; decide the final destination at Grade 11. 2 . Pa y a t t e n t i o n t o t h e requirements given by the university.
3. Firstly ask the community that knows about the university, how to get the scholarship, etc. (avoid asking agents as the first step – LOL) 4. After being accepted by the u n i v e r s i t y, r e a d a n y articles, journals that are similar or connected to the chosen major. 5. Study in the university happily. It is good to enjoy learning; understand the purpose to experience the journey and to pass it. 6.Review after class. Reviewing the lessons can be done individually and in a group. 7. Choose friends that can support you to achieve your goals. (Friends usually enjoy discussion about topics that are learned and they also support you to be balanced).
and to be proactive. SVP shaped him to become a thinker and to be able to solve problems independently. These are also the essential skills that he believes everyone should have. He found that building positive communication with the teachers is also important. Even now, he always remembers Ibu Fenty from SVP. She said to Nathan that she believes he will become a successful person. This statement became a motivation for him to achieve his goals in learning. Nathan finished his interview by mentioning, “Happy 20th Anniversary, SVP. Think big, dare to dream big. Jangan puas menjadi “biasa” saja”.
Nathan actively joined different activities besides studying. He joined an orchestra and has experienced playing violin together with around 30 music players. He was also involved in Doctoral Degree research. For example, research on New Food Sources to Combat Malnutrition and Hidden Hunger. During his free time, he likes to do tracking for viewing mountains and forests. Nathan feels that SVP was also supporting him to practice and develop his skills; especially in social and communication skills. He said that he also learned at SVP to never give up (perseverance)

MEET SVP TEACHER
NATALIA MIA MEILANY Grade 2 Merauke Homeroom Teacher
W
ith the 20th anniversary of Sekolah Victory Plus soon to be celebrated, we thought it appropriate that we profile the school’s longest serving teacher in this month’s “Meet SVP Teacher” article. Ibu Natalia Mia Meilany or Ibu Mia graduated from Atmajaya Catholic University, majoring in English in 2000, before beginning her teaching career at SVP in the same year. Starting in Early Childhood Education, where she worked from 2000 until 2010, she then moved to the Primary School, where she has taught ever since. She started a post graduate programme, majoring in Social Studies and graduated in 2017. Professional development is important to Ibu Mia, and through the years she has participated in many workshops organized by the Association of National Private School (ANPS) and the International Baccalaureate (IB). She has particularly enjoyed these workshops as they have given her the opportunity to meet new people from schools around Indonesia and Asia, as well as the opportunity to share teaching and learning experiences with others. Ibu Mia says that teaching in an IB school has broadened her perspective on what a 21st century education system looks like. She believes that deep thinking is essential, as well as an understanding that education is not only about learning in the class, sitting for examinations and achieving high grades. In this regard, she says that true education happens when both teachers and students are challenged to become lifelong learners, in knowledge, skill and attitude. Ibu Mia mentioned that the fun part of teaching in an IB school is that the programme gives the teacher more space and time to explore, experiment and engage with the students through the inquiry process. However, she says that the challenge is to keep herself updated with information relating to teaching strategies, global issues, and technology that will support her in preparing learning materials for the students’ inquiry process or projects and assessments. prepared by Marcomm

coherent, in-depth understanding, and which have relevance both within and beyond subject areas
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) presents schools with a comprehensive plan for high quality, international education. It provides schools with a curriculum framework of essential elements — the knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes, and action that young students need to equip them for successful lives, both now and in the future. Schools work with the five elements to construct a rigorous and challenging primary curriculum for international education. The PYP aims to create a curriculum that is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant for learners in the 3–12 age range. The curriculum is transdisciplinary, meaning that it focuses on issues that go across subject areas.
·
skills, which are the broad capabilities students develop and apply during learning and in life beyond the classroom
·
attitudes, which contribute to internationalmindedness and the wellbeing of individuals and learning communities, and connect directly to the IB Learner Profile
·
action, which is an expectation in the PYP that successful inquiry leads to responsible, thoughtful and appropriate action.
Taught Curriculum The PYP is organized according to:
The taught curriculum is the part of the International Baccalaureate© (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) that sets out its pedagogical approach. It identifies how schools should teach the PYP written curriculum. The PYP is committed to structured, purposeful inquiry that engages students actively in their own learning. The programme supports students' efforts to construct meaning from the world around them by drawing on their prior knowledge, providing provocation through new experiences and providing opportunities for reflection and consolidation. This approach respects students' developing ideas about how the world works. It encourages them to question, consider and refine their understanding of the social and natural world.
? The written curriculum, which explains what PYP students will learn ? The taught curriculum, which sets out how
educators teach the PYP ? The assessed curriculum, which details the
principles and practice of effective assessment in the PYP ?
Written Curriculum The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) balances the acquisition of significant and relevant knowledge and skills, the development of conceptual understanding, the formation of personal, positive attitudes and the capacity to take responsible actions. The PYP addresses students' academic needs and their social and emotional well-being, encourages students to develop independence and to take responsibility for their own learning, supports students' effort to gain understanding of the world and to function effectively within it and helps students to establish personal values as a foundation on which internationalmindedness will flourish. The written curriculum, outlined below, is made up of five essential elements and details what students will learn.
Assessed Curriculum The unique approaches to teaching and learning in the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) can be explained through the taught, written and assessed curriculum. The assessed curriculum explains how teachers go about gathering and analysing information about student performance. The IB does not set examinations or moderate grades in the PYP. What are the purposes of assessment in the Primary Years Programme?
Essential elements in the PYP ·
knowledge, which is both disciplinary, represented by traditional subject areas (language, maths, science, social studies, arts, PSPE) and transdisciplinary
·
concepts, which students explore through structured inquiry in order to develop
The purposes of assessment are to promote student learning, provide information about student learning and contribute to the successful implementation of the programme. Through assessment, the IB helps schools teaching the Primary Years Programme (PYP) to identify what students know, understand, can do and value at different stages in the teaching and

learning process. In the PYP, learning is viewed as a continuous journey, where teachers identify students' needs and use assessment data to plan the next stage of their learning. Teachers use a wide range of assessment strategies to collect information on each of the elements represented in the written curriculum: the understanding of concepts, the acquisition of knowledge, the mastering of skills, the development of positive attitudes and the ability to take responsible action. The PYP Exhibition: encouraging in-depth, collaborative inquiry
synthesise all of the essential elements of the PYP in ways that can be shared with the whole school community. It also provides teachers with a powerful and authentic process for assessing student understanding. The exhibition represents a unique and significant opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the IB learner profile developed throughout their engagement with the PYP. It also provides schools and students with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the transition of learners to the next phase of their education. Source: www.ibo.org prepared by Ibu Early Hapsari, PYP Coordinator
In the final year of the PYP, students, carry out an extended, in-depth, collaborative project known as the PYP exhibition. This involves students working collaboratively to conduct an in-depth inquiry into real life issues or problems. Students collectively
