I recently returned to Addis Ababa to witness the delivery of Ethiopian Airlines’ 100th aircraft — a milestone I had to see! One hundred planes is a major milestone for any airline in this day and age, where almost any potential challenge that could face an industry faces aviation.

During the fiscal year, the airline was also given a four-star rating by SKYTRAX, the leading customer-service rating organization in the airline industry — putting it on par with other global airlines. SKYRAX also recognized Ethiopian as the “best airline in Africa,” “best business class in Africa,” and “best economy class in Africa.” Ethiopian reached and passed the 100th-aircraft-in-service milestone as well during the year, becoming the first African airline in history to do so.

Ethiopian Receives Environmental Management System Certification

As an indigenous and truly PanAfrican airline, Ethiopian believes that African carriers will only get their fair share of the aviation industry and the African market through partnerships with other African carriers. In line with our Vision 2025 “Multiple Hubs Strategy in Africa,” therefore, we are proud to announce the following: • the establishment of Zambia Airways, in partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation. Zambia Airways will launch local and regional routes by the end of the 2018 year, while the intercontinental routes including Europe, the Middle East, and Asia will be added in the near future. It is expected that the new airline will operate 12 aircraft and carry over 1.9 million passengers by 2028. • the launching of a Chad national carrier — Tchadia Airlines — as of Oct. 1. Ethiopian holds a 49-percent stake in the joint venture while the government of Chad retains 51 percent.

Ethiopian Airlines proudly notes that it has been certified by ETA Umweltmanagement, an independent environmental verifier, for establishing and maintaining an environmental management system in compliance with the requirements of ISO 14001:2015. “The certification showcases our commitment to promote environmental sustainability and adhere to international standards of environmental management,” says Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Tewolde GebreMariam. “We have managed to considerably lower our carbon footprint with our ecofriendly products and operations, both on the ground and in the air. Most importantly, under our 15-year strategic plan, Vision 2025, we have spent billions on new fuel-efficient aircraft. We serve our customers organic food without extra packaging, employ waste-reduction programs and run a paperless industry, among other things, which speak much to our eco-consciousness.”

I thought the 100th plane would be a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, but I was surprised when I turned up for my flight from London to see a shiny new Airbus 350 waiting for us in Ethiopian livery. There are barely any airlines in the world that have both of these most modern, comfortable aircraft, but combined they make up the backbone of Ethiopian Airlines’ fleet. This flight flew by (excuse the pun), as I tried out the appropriately named Cloud Nine business class. With great food, an extensive drinks selection, and a very comfortable and semi-private seat that turned into a flat-lie bed, the experience was fantastic. However, this is 2018 and that’s what I expect of a business class seat from a major airline. What set Ethiopian Airlines apart was the crew. For a company that has grown so large, it may be easy to lose your identity, but not here; Ethiopian still somehow maintains a feel of a family-run airline, and that is special. As I stepped off my return flight into the U.S., I smiled remembering the last thing I did in Addis: attend the welcome ceremony for the 100th aircraft. When I said goodbye, I congratulated everyone on their achievements and the Ethiopian Airlines CEO said he hopes to see me when they receive their 200th plane. This was met with shouts and cries from everyone of “no, 300!” ... “400!” This is an airline that is on an unstoppable growth path — driven by its people. December marks the start of the holiday season for many of you. Allow me, on behalf of all my colleagues, to wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas. We have made all the necessary preparations to avail the best possible travel experience, both on the ground with the opening of our newly renovated and expanded airport terminals in Addis Ababa, and in the air with our fleet of the most modern and comfortable aircraft (Boeing 787 and 737-Max, and the Airbus 350). Looking back, 2018 was a year of great success and many milestones thanks to your patronage and support. Through teamwork and the continuous dedication and hard work of my 16,000 colleagues, we: topped the 10-million passenger mark — a 21-percent increase from the previous year; opened eight new international destinations; received the four-star SKYTRAX customer service certification; introduced 14 brand-new aircraft, including the Boeing 737-Max; and surpassed the 100th aircraft in service, a historical first for an African carrier. Further expanding our global network, we will also launch services to Istanbul and Moscow in December. We are also keenly aware that alone we cannot fill Africa’s airconnectivity vacuum and re-balance the domination of the African market by foreign airlines. We have, therefore, embarked in partnership with many African countries to launch or re-launch several African national carriers — including Tchadia, Zambian Airways, Guinea Airlines and Ethiopian Mozambique Airlines, all of which are now part of the African aviation landscape. These projects are in addition to our existing strategic partners such as ASKY Airlines, which has been providing a critical public service by connecting the West and Central Africa regions for the past 8 years, and Malawian Airlines, which has similarly served Southern Africa for the last 4 years. Lastly, I wish to invite you to Ethiopia, coffee’s Land of Origin, for the first-ever International Coffee Event, and to extend your celebration all the way through December to savor the holiday experience. During this season, you will witness our unique and colorful cultural and religious festivities, such as the UNESCO-honored Epiphany or “Timket” celebrations. FIRST PHASE OF BOLE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT’S NEW TERMINAL OPENS Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport is well known for being Ethiopian’s global hub and the premier connection point for international travelers to and from Africa. And now, after undergoing several years of expansion in response to rapidly increasing passenger numbers, a partial opening of the long-awaited new East Wing Terminal is scheduled to be completed by year’s end. Travelers will be able to enjoy more space and amenities as they wait for flights and, eventually, more flight connections from which to choose. The Ethiopian Airports Enterprise hopes that this terminal will relieve traveler congestion issues while enhancing the airport with updates to the runways, terminals 16

and navigations systems. With the main civil engineering work now completed, the airport expects to be able to fully open the new terminal to passengers within the next year. When completed, the US$350 million expansion will include new dutyfree shops, restaurants, escalators and many other accommodations to improve travelers’ comfort. The expansion includes 74,000 meters of space and is projected to increase the capacity of the airport to be able to handle up to 22 million travelers each year. Once fully operational, Bole International Airport will exceed Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport as the largest capacity airport in Africa.

Strengthening Africa’s use of outer space to boost economic development Space science and technology, and the many practical benefits that can be derived from their application, have played a significant role in international, regional and national economic and social development efforts. Space presents a unique opportunity for cooperation in using and sharing enabling infrastructure and data towards the proactive management of disease outbreaks, natural resources and the environment, responses to natural hazards and disasters, weather forecasting, climate change mitigation and adaptation, agriculture and food security, peacekeeping missions and conflict resolution. Space-derived products and services in Earth observation, satellite communication, and navigation and positioning are crucial for the economic development of the African continent. From agriculture, disaster management, remote sensing, climate forecasting, banking and finance, as well as defence and security Africa’s access to space technology products is no longer a matter of luxury and there is a need to speed up access to these technologies and products. While some of these products and services have helped to meet the social and economic needs of the continent, Africa does not have the full technical know-how to participate independently in these space-related activities. If Africa is to leapfrog into the technological advancements of the 21st century, the continent needs to develop an adequate number of indigenous space scientists, engineers and related professionals who will actively contribute to finding solutions to continental problems. In addition, appropriate policies and strategies are required to develop a regional market for space products in Africa. Agenda 2063, Africa’s master plan for inclusive and sustainable growth and development, identifies space science and technology as one of the key components of spurring growth and transforming Africa and Agenda 2063’s Africa Outer Space Strategy is the blueprint that will guide the continent in implementing a globally competitive Outer Space programme that would enable African countries to harness outer space resources in a coordinated and systematic way to address the continent’s challenges and develop an Africa space and market industry.

Several African countries are in the process of developing their own space-related capabilities and programmes, and are building institutions to manage these programmes. These national efforts should be nurtured to contribute towards a continental programme, without diluting the focus of the national space programmes. However, to position itself as a global player in the space industry, Africa needs to consolidate the fragmented initiatives and create a synergised continent wide centre of excellence that will develop complementary programmes to foster collective actions towards Africa’s development. In January 2016, the Assembly of African Heads of State and Government (The Assembly) adopted the African Space Policy and Strategy as a major step towards the implementation of an African Outer Space Programme to develop the continent’s capacities in: Earth Observation; Satellite Communication; Navigation and Positioning; Space Science and Astronomy. The objectives of the African Space Policy includes amongst others to: • Improve Africa’s economy and the quality of life of its people by using space applications to provide critical information for evidencebased management of human habitats, ecosystems and natural resources. • Develop the requisite human resources by adopting essential space education programmes and tools and promoting capacity-building for the development of space services through the Pan African University Space Science Institute • Develop products and services using African capacities and managed by Africans so as to ensure sustained ownership of the space resources • Develop and commercialise indigenous space technologies, products and services for the public good which reflect and respond to the user needs of the continent • Develop and enhancing early warning systems on the continent • Develop, upgrade and operate cutting-edge African space infrastructure • Establish regional and sub-regional centres of space competencies. • Develop a globally competitive African space programme • Promote R&D-led industrial development, create an industrial capability and promote

public-private partnerships Promote intra-Africa and other international cooperation

The African Union Commission in consultation with African member states, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), private sector, African space stakeholders and end-users evaluated the implications and necessary steps to be taken in implementing the African Outer Space Programme and the need to establish a dedicated institution, the African Space Agency to achieve the objectives of the programme. The findings were presented to the Assembly which in January 2018, adopted the Statute establishing the African Space Agency (AfSA) which will aim to build Africa’s space capacities by focusing on key operational segments namely: Space Applications; Space Operations and Technology; Innovation Research & Development Space Applications: • Earth Observation • Satellite Communication • Navigation and Positioning • Astronomy, Space Exploration and Outer Space Science Space Operations and Technology: • Safety, Mission Planning and Assurance • Systems, Robotics, Space Infrastructure Management • Assembly, Integration and Testing Innovation Research & Development: • Space Industry and Business development • Capacity, Learning and Skills development • Assembly, Integration and Testing The development of an African Outer Space Programme and the establishment of an African Space Agency signals Africa’s strong intent to enhance its use of science and technology as part of its socio-economic transformation agenda; The Africa Space programme and AfSA are expected to boost economic growth in existing sectors as well as develop new industries and consequently, the growing and emergent industries will act as a catalyst to boost education in STEM subjects creating the pool of talented young Africans that will deliver Africa’s Agenda 2063. Nigeria Aso Ebi Bella is an online community connecting enthusiasts of traditional African couture with businesses in the fashion, beauty and wedding industries. Founder Ink Eze first touted the idea of a feature dedicated to wedding fashion on the popular lifestyle online magazine Bella Naija, where she worked at the time. Since the brand launched as a standalone startup, fashion lovers, primarily in Nigeria but increasingly across Africa and beyond, have been able to share their styles with Aso Ebi Bella’s 1.5 million followers across various platforms (Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook among them). The company has also collaborated on campaigns with Nigerian and international brands such as Orijin, Unilever and Renaissance (now Radisson Blu) Hotels.

A natural born entrepreneur, Nneile Nkholise made her first foray into the business world as a child when she sold a pig to pay her primary school fees. A couple of decades later, while studying for her masters in mechanical engineering in 2015, she launched the iMed Tech Group. Today, the South African company produces prosthetics for cancer patients and burn victims. Last year saw the launch of a range of 3D-printed breast prostheses in a variety of skin tones aimed for mastectomy patients unable to afford surgical reconstruction. The focus for iMed Tech has since expanded to include the development of custommade dental products, again using 3D technology.

Tanzania-based SomaApps is helping to revolutionize how scholarships are offered across Africa with the use of mobile software technologies and artificial intelligence. Isaya Yunge, founder of the tech startup, aims to match students to fully-funded scholarships, internships and conferences that meet their qualifications. Within two years, the mobile app has helped over 500 people advance in their academic careers.

ETHIOPIAN DIASPORA TRUST FUND

Following Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed’s recent call for Ethiopian expatriates to contribute to the development of their homeland, the Ethiopian Diaspora Trust Fund has been launched with the aim of facilitating the secure collection of their financial contributions. Ethiopia’s global diaspora is estimated to be between 2 to 3 million, with the largest number of up to 1 million residing in the United States. The recommended donation

of US$1 a day will garner a significant sum for the funding of social services. Ethiopia is now one of many countries to raise revenue from its overseas citizens. According to World Bank data, India is the world’s top recipient of remittance from its diaspora, gathering $69 billion last year, followed by China, the Philippines, Mexico and Nigeria.

HIP HOP SAVES LIVES

Over one million South Sudanese refugees have sought safety in Uganda since the escalation of the civil war in 2016. A new project aims to give voice to their struggles and acknowledge the country which has opened its borders to people in need. Hip Hop Saves Lives from New York has joined forces with the Sosolya Undugu Dance Academy in Kampala to create a theme song entitled “Refugees Welcome,” with plans to record an album and make a documentary. Locals will be hired to engineer the recording, get footage, and produce still photography for the film. Around 85 percent of the displaced people are women and children, many suffering from post-traumatic stress. This project will give them a chance to tell their stories through the healing power of music.

The Namibia Football Association and the United Nations Children’s Fund has launched a new 5-year strategic plan designed to increase the percentage of young girls playing football. The Galz & Girls program, first launched in 2009, is primarily designed to nurture young talent and help develop women’s football in the country, but it also seeks to uplift, educate and empower adolescent girls off the pitch. Organizers teach life skills addressing the concerns that impact their daily lives such as poverty, alcohol, remaining in school, teenage pregnancies and HIV/AIDS. So far, the project has reached about 20,000 girls across 12 communities and 10 regions.

Free movement of Persons in Africa

Agenda 2063 which is the blueprint and master plan for transforming Africa into the global powerhouse of the future, is founded on the African Union (AU) Vision of “An Integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the International arena.” The vision of an integrated Africa calls for not just economic integration, but the integration of Africa’s people by breaking down the invisible and physical barriers which have limited the movement of people and by result weakened the spirit of pan-Africanism. In addition, these barriers have prevented the growth of a knowledge and skills sharing economy which is vital for the advancement of any society. The reasons for these barriers are wide and varied and include security concerns, socio-economic disparities and fear of health epidemics. However, Africa’s fast growing educated middle class along with a growing youth population is a reminder of the potential of the continent if these demographic changes are harnessed and opportunities created to enable nation states to tap into the human capital through the socioeconomic integration required to harness the continent’s vast resources for the benefit of its people. The African Union’s Agenda 2063 identifies free movement of persons as a key ingredient for achieving other development aspirations. Free movement of persons in Africa is expected to deliver several key benefits including: • Boosting intra-Africa trade, commerce and tourism; • Facilitating labour mobility, intra-Africa knowledge and skills transfer • Promoting pan-African identity, social integration and tourism; • Improving trans-border infrastructure and shared development. • Fostering a comprehensive approach to border management; • Promoting rule of law, human rights, and public health In addition, the infrastructure needed to support the mobility of Africans will also serve other economic, technological, security and healthrelated purposes within the overall integration and development plans for Africa. Increased movement of people, goods and services

“The free movement of persons, capital, goods and services will promote integration, PanAfricanism, enhance science, technology, education, research and foster tourism, facilitate intra-Africa trade and investment, increase remittances within Africa, promote mobility of labour, create employment, improve the standards of living of the people of Africa and facilitate the mobilization and utilization of the human and material resources of Africa in order to achieve selfreliance and development” across borders will inevitably incentivise better infrastructural linkages and connections among African countries. To address the issue of the integration of Africa’s citizens, Agenda 2063 identified as one of its flagship initiatives, the African Passport and Free movement of People which aims to remove the restrictions on Africans ability to travel, work and live within their own continent. The initiative aims at transforming Africa’s laws, which remain generally restrictive on movement of people despite political commitments to bring down borders with a view to promoting the issuance of visas by Member States to enhance free movement of all African citizens in all African countries. The African Union Protocol on Free Movement of Persons The Protocol to the treaty establishing the African Economic Community relating to free movement of persons envisages three specific rights: Right of Entry; Right of Establishment and Right of Residence. A brief outline of these rights are summarised below. Right of Entry: Nationals of AU Member States shall have the right to enter, stay, move freely and exit the territory of another Member State in accordance with the laws, regulations and procedures of the host Member State. African nationals will be granted entry without the requirement of a visa. Nationals will be permitted to move freely or stay for a maximum period of ninety (90) days from the date of entry or such further period determined by Member States or through bilateral or regional arrangements. A national of a Member State who wishes to stay beyond the period provided shall seek an extension of stay in accordance with the procedures established by the host Member State. Right of Residence: Nationals of a Member State shall have the right of residence in the territory of any Member State in accordance with the laws of the host Member State. Right of Establishment: Nationals of a Member State shall have the right of establishment within the territory of another Member State in accordance with the laws and policies of the host Member State. The right of establishment shall include the right to set up in the territory of the host Member State: (i) a business, trade, profession, vocation; or (ii) an economic activity as a self-employed person. During the Extraordinary Summit on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) held in Kigali Rwanda in March 2018, 30 of the 55 member states of the African Union signed the Free Movement Protocol. The African Passport During the July 2016 AU Summit in Kigali, the Assembly officially launched the common, electronic, biometric African passport, that would facilitate free movement of persons across Africa. In July 2018, Chiefs of Immigration from African Union Member States met in Nairobi, Kenya to review the draft guidelines for the design, production and issuance of the African Passport. Russia Visitors to Russia during the harsh winter months will be wise to invest in a few thermal layers. The ancient story of how coffee was discovered in Ethiopia has been told for centuries. Today, even most tourists will have heard of the legend of the shepherd Kaldi and his dancing goats. However, the modern story of how Ethiopian coffee is grown, harvested and shipped is less well known. Photographer Philipp SchĂźtz recently traveled to southwestern Ethiopia to capture these images of the diligent workers who pick, wash, sort and pack the precious beans that have become so popular with international coffee-drinkers. The Ethiopian coffee harvest begins at the end of the long rainy season, roughly October or November, and continues until January or February. It starts with picking the red cherries from coffee trees, such as those pictured here on a small farm in east Guji, Oromia.

After the coffee is harvested, it goes through the primary processing method. The traditional method is to dry the cherries, spreading them out on drying beds for two weeks as they first turn a dark purple and then black. This method is often used because of water constraints or to deliberately bring out more fruity flavors of the coffee. After the cherries are dried, the husk is removed in a huller. The second processing method used in Ethiopia is the washed method, where the red cherries get processed in a pulping machine within 24 hours of picking. The fruit of the cherry gets removed in the pulper, and the coffee beans â&#x20AC;&#x201D; covered in parchment and mucilage â&#x20AC;&#x201D; are moved through grading channels into large water tanks, to be soaked for up to 36 hours.

During the fermentation process, the sugars in the mucilage begin to break down, developing the coffeeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s acidity. After fermentation and washing, the coffee is dried on large drying beds, where it is turned constantly during the day and covered during high noon and at night. In the end, whether the coffee was sun-dried or washed, it gets packed into bags. At this stage, the washed method results in green beans that are still covered in parchment, which is hulled at an export-processing facility in Addis Ababa. The cleaned, graded, blended and bagged exportgrade green coffee is then destined for trading companies and roasters across the world.

nce the cradle of the Industrial Revolution, Manchester has since hung up its mucky boots and made the giant leap to become a sophisticated global city. Indeed, the former grim, gritty landscape of “England’s second city” has been transformed into one of commerce, culture and creativity. The city’s rich history remains, but this is a place now buzzing with modern energy. Shiny, high-profile regeneration projects and a wave of skyscrapers play home to a booming business scene. Vast low-rise factories and storehouses have been converted into vibrant music venues, art spaces, restaurants and bars, giving the city a new and rather cosmopolitan face. Canals and waterways surround the city, formerly used for transporting coal but today lined with colorful barges hired out for private parties. Football teams Manchester United and Manchester City seal the city’s growing impact on the world stage. 40

Leading the charge is St. John’s, a proposed £1bn development centered on the former site of the iconic Old Granada Studios. A partnership between Manchester City Council and Allied London, an award-winning property development and investment company, the project will see the building of 320 hotel bedrooms, 560,000 square feet of workspace, 240,000 sq. ft of retail and 13 acres of public space, as well as new residential homes. The initial phase is due for completion at the end of this year. “We want to build a proud new cultural community for Manchester,” says Allied London Chief Executive Michael Ingall. “We want to

make a lasting difference, we want to do it in principled ways, we want to involve as many positive voices as we can, and we want to do it well.” Part of the St. John’s development is Enterprise City, a new business district set to create 10,000 jobs and attract even more young professionals to the city. “Our vision is to put Manchester on the map internationally for enterprise, attracting and retaining the best talent, in a cluster made up of everyone from innovative start-ups to global industry leaders,” adds Ingall. If Allied London’s history elsewhere in the city is anything to go by, then Manchester is in good hands; its development Spinningfields in the city center is one of Europe’s most successful urban-regeneration projects, now home to brands such as Armani as

well as U.K. restaurant empires The Ivy and D&D London (who also have venues in Paris, New York and Tokyo). One of the first companies to move into Enterprise City will be e-commerce giant Booking.com, which will open a new global headquarters for its ground transportation division, Rentalcars.com. The move represents an investment of £100 million over the course of 10 years, with the business becoming the anchor tenant of the campus. The appearance of Booking.com confirms Manchester’s position as a tech hub, which already boasts the largest tech workforce of any U.K. city outside of London. There’s even speculation that Manchester has the potential to become the U.K.’s Silicon Valley, with the number of start-ups and companies relocating to the city from London only continuing to increase. This is partly thanks to investment platforms Crowdcube and GP Bullhound, which recently opened offices in the city to encourage local funding for area start-ups. One startup success story is Manchester-based AccessPay, a specialist in cloud-based payments and a cash management automation provider. Ranked in Deloitte’s U.K. Technology Fast 50 and Tech North’s Top 100, the company has won plaudits as one of the fastestgrowing FinTech businesses outside London.

“Manchester is leading the way for digital in the U.K., both through its burgeoning start-up community, its investment in the next generation of developers and also the role of the city’s universities,” says AccessPay CEO Anish Kapoor. “We have a vision for building a strong and vibrant tech community in Manchester with a view to double its size, significantly increasing headcount at our central Manchester offices, and recruiting another 50 people this year to support our rapid revenue growth.” Housing many of these thriving companies is shared community space WeWork. With 80 offices spanning the globe (Barranquilla, Colombia, is 44

next), WeWork opened its first hub in Manchester last year (its first U.K. office outside London). A second hub swiftly followed. A third is in the pipeline with Amazon due to move in — the first step toward the titan creating its second global headquarters here. “Manchester is a hub of activity, entrepreneurialism and business prowess,” says Mark Goldfinger, WeWork’s director of expansion for Europe, Israel and Australia. “We’ve found an appetite for our spaces in the city, and I think that’s down to the fact that the city’s businesses are seeking community and purpose in their work; being part of something greater than themselves.” And as Manchester’s business world skyrockets, so, too, does the city’s arts scene. Music has always been a big thing here. Following a major renaissance in the ‘80s, Manchester became the clubbing capital of England, playing a key role in the birth of both the acid house and rave genres of music. Manchesterbased bands like Joy Division, the Smiths, the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Oasis also rose to the top of the charts throughout the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s, cementing the city’s reputation as a musical force to be reckoned with. The underground scene here remains as intoxicating as ever. And no place throngs more than the Northern Quarter, an area infused with creative spirit, eclecticism and fun, often described as a “bohemian enclave.” On a typical evening out, the streets burst with cafes and restaurants that seamlessly transition into mini clubs when night falls, complete with makeshift dance floors. Museums are cropping up thick and fast, a mixture of headline-grabbing arts developments alongside several small, artist-run galleries and studioevent spaces. This includes The Whitworth, which recently enjoyed a £15-million redevelopment. The gallery houses some of the U.K.’s finest pieces of art, including a rare collection of wallpapers. Alistair Hudson, director of the Whitworth, says: “Manchester’s art scene is clearly thriving now, but it has an ‘edge’ that distinguishes it from other U.K. cities, rooted in its past as the first truly modern, industrial city, and nurtured through a heady mix of popular music culture, urban design and football intellectuals.” “It is now distinctly the ‘capital of the

I always think of it like a mini New York, modern, brash, showy, great fun, but not taking itself too seriously.” One of the leading artistic lights in the city is Dave Moutrey, director and chief executive of HOME, a new £25 million contemporary arts center. “We want HOME to be relevant to the lives of the people of Manchester — a people’s place, not a cultural palace,” says Moutrey. This means to be

Recently appointed as Manchester’s director of culture, Moutrey says thrilling times await the city over the next three years, including refurbishing the old Contact Theatre and expanding the Manchester Jewish Museum. The Factory, Manchester’s new flagship £112-million arts center, is due for completion in 2020. And yet among these new builds, the grand, old civic buildings still stand strong. This includes The Principal Manchester, a great red-brick and terracotta Victorian building built by Alfred Waterhouse (who was also behind London’s Natural History Museum). Recently revamped, the hotel has become an overnight sensation, embraced by locals as an all-day hangout. Other favorites include the newly-opened Cow

Hollow Hotel, a chic conversion of a textile warehouse, and the award-winning, art deco–themed Hotel Gotham. The hotel’s sister property in the city, Townhouse Hotel — a former cotton warehouse with a history dating back to the Industrial Revolution — has recently been snapped up by the Singapore-based Fragrance Group. “We are excited to be investing in Manchester at a time when it is rapidly establishing itself as one of the foremost destinations in Europe, both commercially and in the eyes of tourists,” says Fragrance Group CEO James Koh. Foreign investment has also played a key part in Manchester’s football scene. Earlier this year, Premier League leader Manchester City — which is financed by the Abu Dhabi United Group — was reported as having the most expensive squad in history, valued at $1.08 billion. The city’s other football team Manchester United is a strong competitor on the world stage, too, having won more trophies than any other club in English football (including the UEFA Europa League last year). The food-and-drink scene has also prospered in recent years like never before. The race to bag the city’s first Michelin star is now in full flow — an example of the kind of establishment

validation Manchester once scorned. One man in the running is Paco Perez, chef patron of Miramar in Girona, Spain, and Enoteca at the Arts Hotel in Barcelona, both of which hold two Michelin stars. Perez launched Tast in June 2018 with “the idea to bring to Manchester a piece of our culture.” Then there’s The French, headed up by Great British Menu–winning chef Adam Reid with modern innovative small-plate cuisine, and The Rabbit in the Moon, offering a modern 17-course tasting menu influenced by East Asian cuisine — the legendary Wagyu truffle nigari among it. The city’s railway arches house an extraordinary concentration of innovative breweries, including Cloudwater Brew Co. Despite only trading for four years, the company has just been voted secondbest brewery in the world by America’s most influential craft beer site, RateBeer. Cloudwater has big plans for the future, opening up its first taproom in London later this year and planning its first beer festival for 2019. Ian Brown, lead singer of the Stone Roses, perhaps summed up the Mancunian spirit best with these words: “Manchester’s got everything except a beach.” That said, the sand is almost certainly already on order.

Here are two of author Majka Burhardt’s favorite essays below: MISSING BEANS During the 16th and 26th days of Ramadan, Muslim Hararis gather for a ceremony marked by a porridge of coffee beans. Special dark, dried cherries are stewed in butter and sugar in an earthen pot and served atop a barley pancake: sirri. The sauce is thick and granular, and once dolloped on the pancake drips off the sides. Today, I am sharing the sirri with a group of women. It is not Ramadan, but they have agreed to show me their tradition. We are all dressed in scarves, and behind my fota I take my first bite of buna sirri. I chew the coffee cherry. My teeth click against each other, and I widen my eyes in surprise. The other women laugh, as they wait for me. I take another bite and put another cherry in my mouth. My teeth shoot straight through, again. “Where is the bean?” I ask. The women laugh. “Wahber,” they say. “Empty.” One woman takes a cherry between her fingers and pops it. In her hand is only air.

We drink kuti kela, coffee from Harar, and eat the sirri. Before long, my teeth ache from the sugar. I roll a few wahber cherries in my mouth and try to politely remove them to look at later. Woizero Fatuma Siti notices. “You want to see these beans?” she

asks me later. In just moments, I am following her through the tight streets of inner Harar. I lose count after five turns and trust I will find my way back. Woizero Fatuma steps quickly over stone thresholds and through courtyards before darting down another narrow corridor. I trot behind her, watching for obstacles she steps over automatically. Soon she pauses before a blue door and turns to me. We have reached her home. Behind the home there is a storage cellar, and she pulls me inside it after her. A 20-gallon sisal bag sits in the corner. It weighs less than a newborn baby. Woizero Fatuma again takes my hand and plunges it with hers deep into the bag. “Wahber,” she says. We laugh, running our hands through these molecules of air. The sack has five years’ worth of wahber. In the market, I will see piles of the empty cherries for sale for ceremony. Ramadan is almost a year away. Later, I will research and learn that these cherries have coffee berry disease; they fall from the trees young and undeveloped — empty.

SIDAMO CUPS OF PLENTY In the highest reaches of southern Ethiopia’s Sidamo region, coffee grew wild until the reign of Emperor Menelik II, when standardized agriculture interrupted the crop’s wild reign at the end of the 19th century. Today, Sidamo’s gentle hills overlay each other with alternating hues of green, and the growing season lasts all year. Well-worn dirt paths follow and intersect rivers and streams. Kelly-green kulkual cacti along the trails reach up to 10 meters in height. And every grass-thatched home is abutted by the ever-forking branches of the coffee trees, with their burgundy cherries. During Menelik II’s time, locals picked coffee by cutting down an entire coffee tree, carrying it to their home, and waiting for the tree to dry and the cherries to simply fall off. They’d then discard the rest of the tree, and use and sell the coffee. Ato Sha’le Bokal tells us this story. He’s the elder in this community of several hundred, the man to whom others come when a dispute needs settling. Born in 1925, he tells me that they now leave the trees in place when they harvest the coffee. His grandparents told him the story of the trees, as well as other tales. “In those days,” he says, “even still when I was a boy, we did not have any cups.” He pauses, as if to confirm that I’m still listening. I nod. “Do you want to know how they drank the coffee?” he asks. After I nod again, he says, “They drank it with their hands.” The gathered crowd smiles even before the translator finishes relaying Ato Sha’le’s words to me. When Ato Sha’le joins in, his smile erases the 84 years on his face. “No,” Ato Sha’le says. “That is not true. Wait, and I will show you the truth.” We’re clustered atop evenly grazed grass in the shade of a Dagucho tree. Ato Sha’le asks one of his 17 children to fetch leaves from a false banana tree, a Woficho. His son returns clutching in one hand a dried leaf and in the other a fresh leaf, and Ato Sha’le selects the dried one first. Ato Sha’le quickly

bends and buckles the leaf parchment, stringing a small twig through either end to maintain a bevel deep enough to hold a liquid. Next, he picks up the fresh leaf and through a series of folds reduces the meter-square foliage to a ladle. “A hundred years ago,” he says, “this is how we drank coffee.” He shows me how they would pass the leaf and share this collective cup. The dry-leaf vessel easily holds 10 times as much coffee as today’s omnipresent six-ounce ceramic cups, the kind found in all Ethiopian homes, both urban and rural. I want to ask if coffee seemed more abundant back then

— not only on the land, but in the giant cup. Instead, I look around. Coffee trees fill almost the entire backdrop to the horizon, some 40 kilometers away. As Ato Sha’le told me earlier, for decades here in Sidamo they’d never done anything with the meaty, red husk of the coffee bean. Other tribes roast the husk and drink the brew. When I asked about this, Ato Sha’le said simply, “It is a sign of plenty when you can throw something away.” We bid goodbye to Ato Sha’le, and then walk an hour back to the road alongside the long afternoon shadows of the coffee trees, deep in the land of plenty that is Sidamo.

SOME OF COFFEE’S MANY USES COFFEE TEA In Kaffa, as in most of Ethiopia, coffee tea — a brew from coffee leaves — is also consumed. Here it is called chemo. The leaves are gathered and lightly roasted, added to water or milk, and boiled for an infusion. Chemo is traditionally spiced with ginger and berbere (hot pepper). BUNA KELEMA At a Kaffa wedding, guests indulge in buna kelema, a porridge of roasted coffee cherries mixed with butter and salt. They eat the mixture with a spoon. Traditional Kafichios roasted the leaves, crushed them, and prepared a refreshing infusion spiced with pepper.

S T O M A C H S AV I O R Upset stomachs are common throughout Ethiopia, and a time-tested medicine is two spoonfuls of ground coffee mixed with honey. The coffee would be roasted, pulverized and rolled with butter to form an apple-sized orb, and then stored in a leather bag for travel.

Metropol has in turns served as a hub for international diplomats and foreign spies, a bullet-riddled fortress for beleaguered Tsarist troops, a backdrop for fiery political rallies (some helmed by Lenin himself), and an early seat of the Soviet government. Preserved by the Bolsheviks to serve as a luxurious “front door” for foreign visitors to the new Russia, the Metropol serves as a rare example of Tsarist-era aesthetics and

opulence that survived Soviet purges of all things bourgeoisie. Guests and non-guests alike can enjoy an excellent breakfast of egg dishes, cured fish, fresh fruit and traditional porridge under the ornate stained-glass ceiling of the hotel’s great hall.

erched on a hill overlooking a bend in the Moskva River, the citadel known commonly as The Kremlin — a site continuously inhabited since the second century B.C. — exudes a sense of rigid permanence. The city surrounding the fortress, however, couldn’t be more dynamic. Historically a crossroads between Europe and Asia, Moscow’s character was forged via hundreds of years of extremes: destruction and rebuilding, political oppression and revolution, war and peace. Now Europe’s second-most populous city, Moscow is again on the rise — literally in the case of its budding skyline, more figuratively in the sense of its place in the world. Bristling with energy, steeped in its own history, and fiercely proud of its own Russian-ness, the city can simultaneously take you back in time while providing a glimpse into its promising future.

If hotel dining doesn’t suit you — or if you simply need a second cup of hot tea on a brisk Moscow morning — take a short stroll through the charming streets of the city’s Tverskoy District to Café Pushkin (and don’t miss Moscow’s famed Bolshoi Theatre along the way). Open 24 hours a day and housed in a space renovated to resemble the home of a 19th-century Russian aristocrat, the “café” is actually a top-tier restaurant serving traditional Russian fare such as caviar and blinchiki (Russian pancakes), as well as several decidedly bourgeoise variations of “breakfast champagne.” 9:00 a.m. A few-minutes walk away,

Patriarch’s Ponds anchors the tony neighborhood of the same name, popular with locals and expats alike. Find a bench and relax for a moment in this quiet, green refuge tucked away amid the frenetic city center. From Patriarch’s Ponds, make your way east toward Tverskaya Street, one of Moscow’s main thoroughfares, taking a moment to pass by the monument at Pushkin Square honoring Russia’s most celebrated poet. The route south along Tverskaya toward Red Square is dotted with bookstores, boutiques and other souvenir-shopping opportunities. Detour through Yeliseyevsky (or Eliseyevskiy) market, an 18th-century mansion turned grocery store where shoppers browse for Russian delicacies beneath gilded ceilings, high stainedglass windows, and ostentatious chandeliers.

inside the Kremlin walls, home to the world’s largest single collection of jewel-encrusted Fabergé eggs (among many other imperial treasures). Those seeking opulence for themselves can find it on the opposite side of Red Square in a soaring late19th-century gallery building (known as GUM after the Russian department store), where luxury shops and beautiful late-Tsarist-era architecture abound. 12:30 p.m. Rest your now-weary legs

by sinking into one of the plush red chairs at Grand Café Dr. Zhivago while sampling a traditional Russian luncheon of pickled vegetables, crisp salads, boiled dumplings, and a range of hot and cold soups. Borscht — that ubiquitous Russian comfort food — is on offer, but locals might nudge you toward the more adventurous solyanka, a sour soup served here with fish or beef. 2:00 p.m. Once properly fortified with

a cup of tea or “coffee in Soviet style” (that is, served alongside a smattering of sugary confections), walk off your lunch in Zaryadye Park, Moscow’s first new green space in 50 years. Opened late last year, the 14-hectare site just opposite Red Square was home to a largely Jewish neighborhood prior to the 1917 revolution, after which it was partially demolished to make way for a massive, 3,000-room hotel. The hotel was likewise razed in 2006, and the site is now home to curvaceous green slopes and towering birch trees, a concert

hall, and a sweeping horseshoe-shaped bridge overhanging the Moskva River that’s quickly become the city’s most popular selfie destination. 3:00 p.m. Cross the bridge behind St.

Basil’s to Bolotny Island and turn right on the Sofiskaya Embankment road, which offers picturesque views of the Kremlin and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior across the river as you make your way south to Red October, a massive red-brick complex that once churned out candy and chocolate for the Krasny Oktyabr’ confection company. The site is now home to something unique to Moscow: an arty, bohemian mélange of galleries and studios, event spaces, a startup community, educational establishments, cafés, and restaurants that’s often compared to London’s Shoreditch or New York’s Tribeca. Get your art fix at the Lumiere Brothers Center for Photography or the Red October Gallery, which focus on contemporary Russian photography and visual art (respectively). Plan ahead and you might even catch a workshop or lecture with a prominent Russian artist or entrepreneur. 4:30 p.m. As you make your way back

toward the city center, grab a seat on the rooftop at Strelka Bar for a tea, coffee or aperitif. An extension of the nearby Strelka Institute — a nonprofit media, architecture and design school — the bar is typically buzzing with hip, young Muscovites and sits directly

Street you’ll run into Moscow’s true historic center, where the vast openness of Red Square runs up against the imposing high walls of the Kremlin, which in turn stands in sharp contrast to the whimsically-colored onion domes of St. Basil’s Cathedral. The historically-inclined can see the preserved body of revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin in Red Square or take a tour of the Armoury Chamber museum

across the river from the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Feel free to linger here. When the sun dips low behind the Cathedral’s bulbous golden domes, you’ll be glad you did.

It’s a lovely four-kilometer walk, but getting there via Metro or car service is easy — just be sure to use a reputable car-hailing service. Home to multiple theaters and a bandshell that regularly host plays, operas and outdoor concerts, Hermitage Garden is a cultural attraction in its own right. Weather permitting, grab a patio seat at Veranda 32.05, a trendy restaurant and cocktail spot tucked away in the gardens’ quiet center. If a day of dining on Russian standbys has you feeling lukewarm toward the excellent beef stroganoff or another round of caviar, tuck instead into a 60

Simachev is known for blending modern trends with Soviet-legacy aesthetics, and his eponymous bar on Pereulok Stoleshnikov is no different, bedecked with quirky antique furniture, manga murals, more disco balls than common sense might require, and regular dance parties. For a somewhat quieter evening, Noor Bar on Tverskaya serves some of the best cocktails in a cocktail-crazed city amid a stylish, retro-modern setting until 3:00 a.m. If you’re still feeling peckish at this late hour, bring your day full circle by stopping at nearby Café Pushkin once more on the way home; it’s open 24 hours, and for good reason. If there’s one thing you should know about drinking in Moscow, it’s that it’s never too late for one last round of champagne and caviar.

TRAVELING IN ETHIOPIA LAND ► Ethiopia covers an area of 1,104,300 square kilometers (approx. 426,372 square miles). CLIMATE ► There are two seasons: The dry season, October–May, and the wet season, June–September. TOPOGRAPHY ► Ethiopia has an elevated central plateau varying in height between 2,000 and 3,000 meters. In the north and center of the country, there are some 25 mountains whose peaks rise above 4,000 meters. The most famous Ethiopian river is the Blue Nile (or Abbay), which flows north a distance of 1,450 kilometers from its source in Lake Tana to join the White Nile at Khartoum, Sudan. PEOPLE ► The population is estimated at 102,374,044. ECONOMY ► More than 70 percent of the population earns a living from the land, mainly as subsistence farmers. Agriculture is the backbone of the national economy, and the principal exports from this sector are coffee, oil seeds, pulses, flowers, vegetables, sugar and foodstuffs for animals. There is also a thriving livestock sector, exporting cattle, hides and skins.

LANGUAGE ► Ethiopia is a multiethnic state with 83 languages and 200 dialects. Amharic is the working language of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, while Oromiffa, Tigrigna and Guragina are widely spoken.

Money transfers can be made through Western Union and MoneyGram. Both have representative branches in Addis Ababa and also make their services available from private and national banks. For courier services, DHL, Fedex, UPS, TNT and EMS have offices in Addis Ababa.

COMMUNICATIONS ► Telephones, fax machines and Internet access are available in Addis Ababa in most hotels and at private Internet service centers around the city. WORKING HOURS ► Government office hours are 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. and 1:30–5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Working hours on Friday are 8:30–11:30 a.m. and 1:30–5:30 p.m. Private and public businesses are often open on Saturdays. When it comes to currency: a) It is illegal to carry more than 200 birr when

entering or departing Ethiopia. b) Whether you are a transit passenger or your final destination is Ethiopia, you must declare to customs officials at point of customs crossing point (entry) any cash, checks or promissory notes that exceed the amount of USD 3,000 or its equivalent. Ethiopian customs rules also limit the amount of precious metals or minerals imported or exported for personal use to 1) 100 grams for gold and other precious metals; 2) 30 grams for precious stones; 3) 100 grams for semi-precious stones. Hence passengers who leave the transit area are required to declare valuables in excess of the above limit.

IMMIGRATION REQUIREMENTS

Visas are required for all foreign visitors to Ethiopia, with the exception of nationals of Kenya and Djibouti. Visa applications may be obtained at Ethiopia’s diplomatic missions overseas. Nationals of 37 countries are now allowed to receive their tourist visas on arrival in Ethiopia. Alternatively, nationals of these countries can apply for a tourist visa online at www.evisa.gov.et. The list includes: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, North Korea, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russian Federation, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, United Kingdom and United States.

BOLE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

The airport is about 5 kilometers from Meskel Square and Addis Ababa’s central business district. Self-service kiosks are available for guests checking in, and free Wi-Fi is offered throughout the airport. Free luggage carts and paid porters are also available in the baggage hall. All bags must go through X-ray check before you exit. When flying out of Bole International Airport, please note: Terminal 1 — all domestic flights and flights to Burundi, Djibouti, Rwanda, Somaliland, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. Terminal 2 — all other international flights. Taxis are readily available and may be ordered inside the terminal. Privately owned taxis are not metered, nor do they have fixed rates. Agree upon the fare in advance.

SECURITY ► Security at the airport is tight, and travelers need to produce their air ticket and passport to enter the terminal. All other visitors are required to pay a fee of 10 birr in the car park and may be required to show identification.
