TRAVEL
SPAIN
ONE NIGHT IN BILBAO Bilbao, the capital of the province of Biscay, is one of the best examples of why a holiday in the Basque Country has a little something for everyone. Spain has plenty of ‘big hitter’ destinations. Barcelona probably tops the list, and for more reasons than the inside of Gaudi’s mind. Madrid equals majesty - the Palacio Real et al. Valencia oozes tradition, Granada drips in sophistication. The list could go on. In those cities alone there’s enough to keep you busy for a lifetime of repeat visits, but to focus on these areas only would be to miss out on some of the country’s finest cultural, epicurean, historical and natural attractions. Take Bilbao, for example, the capital of the province of Biscay and one of the best examples of why a holiday in Basque Country has a little something for everyone (and their stomachs). Less sprawling metropolis and more an easy city to master, although the wider urban sprawl stretches as far as the eye can see, what this place lacks in immediate aesthetic appeal is made up for
4
(and then some) by its underlying merits. For too long, Bilbao struggled to gain any kind of recognition or investment from the powers-that-be, having to fight long and hard to secure funds for even the most necessary of improvements. The result is a townscape that boasts a subtle glimpse of the region’s great history, and plenty of scars etched into its facade, courtesy of industrialism. The arrival of the Museo Guggenheim marked the beginning of a new era for the city. Now recognised as one of Europe’s major art galleries, and competing on the world stage in terms of prestige, the building’s divisive, somewhat steely architecture is actually perfect for the surrounding streets. Clearly the idea is to reflect the hard-working, blue-collar citizens that paved the way for the town we see today, and the effect is impossible to ignore. In contrast, the interior boasts the kind of collections that would make even the most toffee-nosed visual snob cry with joy. Of course a museum does not a town make, and although Bilbao has plenty
of others to offer - including the Museo de Bellas Artes (a ‘cousin’ to the Guggenheim) and the seafaring Museo Maritimo Ria de Bilbao (an ultra-modern exploration of maritime both past and present) - such tourist traps are not the only reason people come here. Hemmed in by hills, and boasting its own funicular railway with which to gain the best perspective of the landscape, Bilbao has so much to offer those looking for a taste

of real northern Spain. And that’s not just a reference to the widely understood notion that Basque Country has the best cuisine in the country. From idyllic villages to the picturesque walks in between, from the downtown tapas bars to ancient
churches and forgotten ruins, this is a city and region re-energising and regenerating itself in a bid not just to keep up with the often-louder neighbours, but to maintain a completely unique identity.

GOING GREEN
CREATING A HEALTHIER HOME
With just a little research and thought we can all take a step further forward in protecting our family and our planet next time we re-decorate or do some DIY. Most of us are concerned about the effect that we are having on our planet and do our bit towards reducing our carbon footprints. Many people now re-cycle regularly and have given up using plastic bags for shopping, opting instead for the much nicer re-usable bags. Our cars are checked annually for emissions and new models are far more efficient and environmentally cleaner. All good, basic steps in trying to make our world a better place to live in, but are we doing enough? Do we give as much thought to what
6
damage we may inadvertently be doing to our health by our choice of furnishings and decor in our own homes? Unbeknown to most of us we have for years been filling our homes with potentially toxic materials that are not only harmful in their manufacture and use to the planet, but also to ourselves when placed in our homes.
When re-decorating use paints that are chemical, heavy metal and volatile organic compound (VOC) free. There are plenty to choose from that are suitable for all painted surfaces; washable, durable and, as they are completely non-toxic, they immediately improve the air quality in your home. These natural paints are also very kind to the environment in general.
To improve your home environment and enhance your quality of life, use green eco-friendly decor and furnishings. By choosing these readily available products you can greatly enhance the air quality in your home which is obviously good for your health.
For flooring, look for the carpets made from natural plant fibres or wool. Other carpets are produced using materials derived from petroleum which is a pollutant; most of us will have noticed the chemical smell coming from a newly laid conventional carpet. This is not the

If your preference is for wood flooring, there is now a wide range of boards made from sustainable woods such as bamboo and cork. In your kitchen go for countertops made from recycled materials such as crushed stones, glass or porcelain rather than ones made with conventional materials which
need toxic adhesives and chemicals to fit them. Kitchen cabinets have generally been made from synthetic wood and the glues used in their construction emit PVC, VOCs and other toxic vapours. There are now, fortunately, a few glues which are free from formaldehyde. Cabinets made from bamboo are becoming popular because of their attractive finish and the sustainability of the bamboo. CLEANING UP
TIME-SAVING CLEANING TRICKS With a study showing that pay gaps between men and women might all be down to the hours we ladies spend on the housework, here are some tips from TV’s Queens of Clean, Kim and Aggie, to help get it done just a bit quicker Academics, unlike housewives, clearly have too much time on their hands. After a detailed study which took some 15 years, they came to the conclusion that the reason women earn less money than men is that they do more housework.
The British Household Panel Study, which followed the same 5,000 families for more than 15 years, found the following: While men do only four or five hours of household work a week, single women put seven hours into cleaning and maintaining the home. And wives and live-in girlfriends do more than 12 hours of domestic work every week, with destructive results for their careers.
Apparently the 18 per cent difference in earnings between the sexes is mainly caused by women having children and then choosing to spend more time than men on their upbringing. Not to mention the fact that women do the majority of daily household chores - notably cooking, laundry and shopping - according to the Institute for Social and Economic Research. Men, meanwhile, tend to confine themselves to gardening and DIY repairs at weekends. In addition, chores often tackled by women - such as cooking meals - usually have to be done at a set time. “It is likely that the relative inflexibility of housework for women in couples reduces their availability in the labour market,” said the study.
8
Experts advise you to work room by room, dusting, sweeping and vacuuming from top to bottom to reduce dust between cleaning sessions. TV’s Queens of Clean, Kim and Aggie from “How Clean is Your House?” have an assortment of eco-friendly cleaning hints in their Cleaning Bible. They praise bicarbonate of soda as very much more that a baking ingredient. Mix with a little warm water to make a paste, and they say this will clean everything from fridges to ovens. (Leave the paste on the oven overnight for sparkling clean!) Clear vinegar is great for getting stains out. Simply mix two parts of water with one part vinegar and leave overnight. Clean lime scale off bathroom showers and taps by soaking in hot vinegar (wrap kitchen roll around taps), and you can even use a vinegar solution to clean the windows.
So, ladies, the answer clearly is to get that housework done as quickly as possible or hire a cleaner... but if you can’t find or afford a good one, the next best thing is to arm yourself with the best cleaning products you can find (often these can be eco-friendly and home-made), an assortment of rubber gloves and cleaning cloths, and set yourself a simple rota of chores.
They also recommend soda water for getting red wine stains out of carpets. And try unblocking sinks by pouring down some bicarbonate of soda, followed by some clear vinegar. This solution should fizz and bubble up, and give your pipes a good cleaning out without the use of any harmful chemicals.

BEAUTY
SUMMER’S HERE
7 SENSATIONAL SUMMER TIPS Rejoice - the warm weather is (hopefully) finally here. Long days spent soaking up the rays, barbecues and beaches; it all sounds like great fun, but chances are your body, face, hair, and eyes may not all agree. Keen to help you stave off the bad side of summer, and stay looking gorgeous, we enlisted the help of Amanda Elias, beauty expert and founder of Bravura London, to divulge her top tips for protecting your looks at this time of year. 1 - “The first thing you want to think about is sun protection; the sun is the main cause of premature ageing which can leave your skin dull, dry, wrinkled and with hyperpigmentation (brown spots). Protect all exposed skin with a broad spectrum SPF (protects against both UVA & UVB) of at least 30, preferably a mineral SPF which acts as a sunblock to instantly block the sun’s rays. Look for a product that’s waterproof and don’t forget your lips, ears and the back of your neck. Re-apply frequently.” 2 - “You may know about cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising your face, but do you spend as much TLC on your body? Ensure you exfoliate at least twice a week and if possible, slather yourself daily (after your shower) in your favourite body lotion.”
10
3 - “Do you find your skin flushes when you get hot? Keep a refreshing water spray or toner spray at hand to spritz your face and neck when you feel yourself overheating.” 4 - “Avoid wearing perfumes on your skin; when the sun hits the areas of skin that contain perfumes it can cause irritation. Fragrance your hair by spraying your hairbrush then brush through your locks, every time you swish your hair you’ll be surrounded by a beautiful fragrance.” 5 - “Sun and lip gloss aren’t a good combination - remember the days of people baking in the sun covered in baby oil? Same thing. Get yourself a good lip balm that contains an SPF (you can get plenty that have colour) or line your lips with a lip pencil then top with a clear SPF balm.” 6 - “Parched skin after too much alcohol and sun? Intensely nourish your skin with an oil such as jojoba oil, this non-

7 - “Don’t forget to hydrate yourself. To keep your body functioning properly and to aid in the removal of toxins from the body it needs to be well hydrated, so be sure to drink 2-3 litres of liquid (sadly this doesn’t include dehydrating substances such as cocktails and coffee) per day.”

HEALTH
SUGAR REDUCTION
THE DECLINE OF HEALTHY JUICES Many of us used to drink fruit juice as part of our five-a-day. But it is now known that the levels of sugar in juice are far too high to be healthy. Just in case this particular epicurean revelation passed you by, we’ve got some news. Forget everything you were brought up to believe, because one of the key ways in which millions of Britons strive to achieve the new recommended ten pieces of fruit and veg per day is no longer considered particularly good for you. Thanks to the phenomenally high levels of sugar, and the
12
effect of pulping on fruit, orange juice and just about every other type of fruit drink should no longer be part of your daily diet. Indeed, it may pack a vitamin punch, but drinking these refreshing bottles and cartons as a means of staying healthy isn’t going to work. But don’t just take our word for it.
Across the world concerns have never been higher about the sheer volume of sugar now being consumed, and its potential impact on our bodies. During the process of fruit being juiced the sugar levels actually increase even if the label says nothing has been added, meaning you’re far better off with an actual apple than its admittedly tasty, sharp and ever-popular liquid by-product. The same goes for any type of fruit you’d care to suggest.
facebook.com/selectionmagazine
It’s not good news for the
drinks industry, already battling with the devil-like image those once-friendly and wholesome soft drinks companies have earned themselves. And it’s not good for anyone with a fridge full of fruit juice, although going cold turkey isn’t the only means of successfully reducing how much harm these drinks are doing to your health. Experts also suggest diluting the juice with water, which would have been seen as sacrilege by many just a decade
or two ago (this isn’t squash, after all), but these days is fast becoming the modus for people who can’t or won’t give up altogether. A school in Dagenham, London, even took the bold step of banning cartons altogether, in an attempt to send the message of required lifestyle reform out to parents. Any pupil found with fruit juice would have the drink confiscated
www.selectionmagazine.com
and replaced with water, which, as of January, was the only thing offered to students looking to quench their thirst. It sounds dramatic, but such steps are necessary if the culture of poor diet (in this instance based on misinformation) is to be reversed. And, given the national prognosis - with obesity, cancer and heart disease continuing to stalk the population - few can deny that’s exactly what needs to happen.

BEE VIGILANT
GARDENING FOR THE BEES Bees are an essential part of the garden ecosystem, as they act as pollinators for many kinds of flowers, fruit and vegetables. Here’s how to encourage them to make a home in your garden. With the global decline of bees, it has never been more important to support the pollinator population in your garden. This spring make sure you fill your garden with as many pollen-rich plants as you can to give our bees a fighting chance, as they are vital components of our biodiversity.
gardeners provide flowers throughout the bee’s life-cycle, from March to September. BUMBLEBEES Different bumblebee species have tongues of differing lengths and so prefer different flowers. The longest-tongued species, Bombus hortorum, prefer deep flowers such as honeysuckle, foxgloves and aquilegia.
The Royal Horticultural Society reports Britain as having 25 species of bumblebees, of which about 11 commonly visit garden flowers. They also state that there are about 260 species of solitary bee in Britain, all of which have been in decline in the last 50 years for a variety of reasons. NECTAR AND POLLEN Flowers attract insects by providing them with two rich sources of food: nectar and pollen. Nectar provides insects with an energy source as it contains sugar, while pollen grains contain proteins and oils. It’s also a good idea to have at least two nectar or pollen-rich plants in flower at any one time during this period. The nectar feeds the adult bee, while the pollen is collected to feed their larvae. It is vital that
18
There are six plant families bumblebees are particularly attracted to, but they will also appeal to other pollinators such as honeybees and butterflies. These include Boraginaceae (the wildflower comfrey, which makes a potassium-rich compost), and Fabaceae (peas).
Viper’s bugloss (Echium vulgare) is perhaps the best single plant to attract bumblebees to a garden, and attracts both short and long-tongued varieties. Planting just one or two of these will attract many bees. It has beautiful blue flowers two feet tall, and blooms from June to August, making a good herbaceous border. PREFERRED FLOWERS The rose family, especially hawthorn and potentilla, seems to be irresistible to bees, as are fennel, angelica, cow parsley and sedum flowers. Tubular-shaped flowers, such as snapdragons and heathers, are also all favourite feeding grounds for bees. Spring flowers attracting bees include bluebell, bugle, crab apple, daffodil, flowering cherry and currant, forget-menot, hellebore, pulmonaria, pussy willow, rhododendron, rosemary, viburnum and thrift. To tempt the bees in early summer plant aquilegia, astilbe, campanula, everlasting sweet pea, fennel, geranium, potentilla, stachys, teasel, thyme and verbascum. Late summer flowers attracting bees include angelica, aster, buddleia, cardoon, cornflower, dahlia (single-flowered), delphinium, eryngium, fuchsia, globe thistle, ivy, lavender, penstemon, scabious and sedum.

DRIVEWAY AND PATIO CLEANERS
One of the best ways to encourage bees in your garden is to keep your own bees with a hive, or allow a beekeeper to place hives in your garden. You could also add a bumblebee box to your garden. Nest boxes containing cardboard tubes or hollow plant stems, or holes drilled in blocks of wood, ranging from two to eight millimetres wide, will provide nest sites for some species of solitary bees. The more flowers you plant, the more varieties of bees you will attract into your garden, and the more flowers and vegetables will be pollinated. This is particularly important for fruit and vegetable growers as apples, plums, pears, cherries, raspberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, red currants, gooseberries and strawberries, broad beans, runner beans and some members of the marrowpumpkin family all rely on insects to bring about pollination.

ART THEFT
HOW MANY WORDS?
After a local art theft, six suspects were being interviewed. Below is a summary of their statements. Police know that exactly four of them told one lie each and all of the other statements are true. From this information can you tell who committed the crime?
Using the grid below, how many words can you find?
Alan said: It wasn’t Brian It wasn’t Dave It wasn’t Eddie
Dave said: It wasn’t Alan It wasn’t Freddie It wasn’t Charlie
Brian said: It wasn’t Alan It wasn’t Charlie It wasn’t Eddie
Eddie said: It wasn’t Charlie It wasn’t Dave It wasn’t Freddie
Charlie said: It wasn’t Brian It wasn’t Freddie It wasn’t Eddie
Freddie said: It wasn’t Charlie It wasn’t Dave It wasn’t Alan
Each word must contain the central M and no letter can be used twice, however, the letters do not have to be connected. Proper nouns are not allowed, however, plurals are. There is at least one nine letter word. Excellent: 38 words. Good: 31 words. Average: 24 words.
W CRATE OF APPLES
During the night, Alan woke up and decided to hide his share of the apples and hid a third, then promptly fell asleep again.

During a recent expedition, three intrepid adventurers were left stranded in the middle of the desert with only a crate full of apples.

Brian woke up shortly after and also decided to hide a third of the remaining apples and he also dozed back to sleep. Finally, Charlie woke up and seeing the others were asleep, took a third of what was left. Of course none of the adventurers knew of the other’s antics, so, in the morning, they shared the remaining apples, each receiving sixteen. How many apples were in the crate originally?
