‘The X Factor’ is back! And the judges have been out in force in central London to launch the 11th series of the show.

CheRYl Cole A GENTLEMAN NEVER TALKS ABOUT A LADY’S WEIGHT >
4
> facebook.com/selectionmagazine
Returning to the panel this year are Simon Cowell and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini [formerly Cole]. They are joined by new girl Mel B, and veteran judge Louis Walsh. Dermot O'Leary is back as host of the TV talent show while Sarah-Jane Crawford has taken over the reins of spin-off show ‘The Xtra Factor’. We caught up with Cheryl Cole, who hit back at Simon Cowell over comments he made in a recent interview over her appearance when she turned up to film ‘X Factor USA’. She also talked about being back on the show in the UK, her close relationship with Mel B and maybe not-so-close relationship with Louis Walsh and more...
> SO CHERYL, WHAT DO YOU
FEEL ABOUT SIMON SAYING IN AN INTERVIEW ABOUT YOUR FALL OUT OVER ‘X FACTOR USA’ AND THAT WHEN YOU TURNED UP ON THE FIRST DAY YOUR HAIR WAS WEIRD AND YOU’D PUT ON WEIGHT? CHERYL COLE: Simon saying my hair is weird? First of all, last time I checked, if we’re going to go about hair... and a gentleman or a well-educated gentleman never talks about a lady’s age or weight. But that’s only if you’re educated on how you treat a lady. So I wouldn’t expect anything less. > SIMON HAS ALSO SAID THAT
YOU AND MEL CAN’T WIN THE SHOW BECAUSE YOU DON’T FOCUS ENOUGH ON YOUR ARTISTS? CHERYL COLE: But you know what it is? If you go back, I believe a couple of weeks ago we did an interview together - he said the contrary. ‘The reason I hired’ - I’m sure you don’t hire a judge who can’t do a job right? ‘The reason I hired Cheryl and Mel is because they’re so focussed on finding talent and so focussed on bringing somebody else’s talent to life and having a career, that it’s not about them...’ I can’t remember his exact words but if you go and find the interview it was the contrary. > DOES BEING BACK ON THE
SHOW FEEL LIKE COMING HOME? CHERYL COLE: It feels like I’ve never been gone.
SPOTLIGHT > WHAT DID IT FEEL LIKE THE
> MEL HAS THROWN IN A
VERY FIRST DAY YOU WERE BACK ON THE PANEL? WAS IT A BIT AWKWARD?
CHERYL COLE: I didn’t feel anything, literally, obviously I’d seen everybody before previously to actually to sitting on the panel. But it didn’t feel any different. It literally feels like four years have disappeared.
> WERE YOU A BIT SCARED OF
MEL B, BECAUSE SHE HAS A TONGUE ON HER?
CHERYL COLE: No not scared. She’s got that tag Scary Spice but she couldn’t be further from it. She’s actually a big softie at heart.
> ANY TEARS FROM YOU THIS
YEAR?
CHERYL COLE: She’s a big softie. She’s got very kind eyes. When you’re sitting this close to somebody all day every day you get to know them very well.
YOUR NEXT SINGLE?
> BUT DERMOT SAYS THERE
IS BLOOD ON THE FLOOR BETWEEN YOU AND LOUIS?
CHERYL COLE: Blood on the floor? Ah that’s slightly dramatic. I don’t know, maybe it’s Louis’ only blood because he wants to do something to himself [laughs] but it’s certainly not mine. I couldn’t care less. Honestly, if Louis wants to chat, Louis can chat – I’m too busy focussing on me contestants. > HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO
HASN’T DONE THE ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE?
CHERYL COLE: We’ll see. > WHAT’S THE LATEST ON
> BESTIES?
CHERYL COLE: I think we should do like a themed week where we’ll do Spice Girls versus Girls Aloud. So they sing Girls Aloud songs and they sing SpiceGirls songs. Could be an interesting week that one.
CHERYL COLE: I have just shot the video, which was a lot of fun. It’s something I’ve never done before. I was outdoors, like, a lot of time I’m on set. So I had a lot of freedom. It’s called, ‘I Don’t Care’ and it sums up pretty much how I feel right now. > AND THE SOUND OF THIS
ONE?
CHERYL COLE: Very pop but fun pop. > AND HOW’S YOUR FRENCH?
CHERYL COLE: Fantastique! Image: Featureflash / Shutterstock
CHALLENGE – SHE’LL BRING THE SPICE GIRLS BACK, CAN YOU BRING GIRLS ALOUD BACK? SIMON SAYS IT’S A GREAT IDEA.
THANK YOU...
CHERYL COLE: Who Louis? There’s a surprise. > www.selectionmagazine.com

The Evolution of Celebrity Style
Emma Watson
The screen starlet best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, has grown as an actress and also flourished in the style stakes. Emma Watson has been in the spotlight since a young girl and subsequently wowed us with impeccable style and sophisticated looks showing a matured young woman ready to take on new exciting things. Watson captivated designers and industry power brands that wanted the star headlining their campaigns. Burberry and Lancôme were just a few industry players alongside many popular magazine covers that featured Emma’s new chic style. The screen star also turned her talents to fashion design, creating a collection for ethical brand People Tree. This girl oozes grace and talent whilst creating elegant casual looks alongside gorgeous red carpet glamour, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for this talented icon. 6

We can’t help but love taking a peek at the latest must have looks from well-known celebrities. There are several UK stars that have blossomed in 2014 and suitably become fashionable icons. These women are stars in their own right coming from industries spanning music, film and the royal family. Our fashion stars of the moment include Emma Watson, Victoria Beckham and Kate Middleton. Each has seen a fashion evolution and we look at how they charmed the nation with unquestionable style.
fashion
Last but not least, sees our favourite member of royalty steal the style stakes with her infamous fashion evolution. One of the most watched ladies in the world, Kate Middleton’s style choice has been under scrutiny since her university days. Starting her fashion journey as a preppy student, Kate’s status has evolved as a fresh new fashion icon. When sporting the latest collections such as the infamous royal blue Issa dress, her public appearances sparked buying frenzies with pieces selling out within hours. Every designer wants to dress her and every lady wants to dress like her. The best thing about Kate’s looks is that they are accessible to all, whether you shop designer or high street, the princess shows us how easy refined style can be achieved whatever your budget.

Our next UK fashion star first hit the headlines as part of the British girl group The Spice Girls, since then she’s bagged a gorgeous footballer and turned her love of fashion into a lucrative career. Now known for her impeccable style and killer heels, this fashionista is a force to be reckoned with. Gracing the catwalks of New York Fashion week with her latest collections has seen Victoria’s signature style come to life. Beckham has created a sleek, tailored look similar to her own statement style that we all know and love. Long gone are the days of chucky platforms and a short hemline, this style icon is creating infectious on trend looks perfect for the evolving fashion industry.

Autumn Nail Trends A
s the days get a lot shorter…a lot, the sun goes all shy and stroppy and refuses to come out unless it has to, and the leaves go all wrinkly and brown and shrivelled and, well, kinda dead, our thoughts naturally turn to just what to do on those cosy nights in. But never fear, the autumn nail trends for 2014 are here, bringing you not only something to do indoors other than watch soap operas and eat crinkle cut crisps, but also lots of yummy new fashion looks too! Think of autumn, and russet tones are likely to spring to mind, which is useful as deep, 8
> facebook.com/selectionmagazine
burgundy reds are a serious look for the season. So deep a red it could even be called brown, there is something a bit gothic and deadly about the darkness of the red, but the colour matches the season’s clothing trend for the same colour, with coats like 70’s carpets being a look that is better in the flesh than as described here. But whilst you think of tones to go with reds and browns, the obvious metallic to spring to mind would be gold; but just to play with your brain and make you question your sanity, it’s silver that is the precious metal winner when it comes to nails. This is not a
pathetic whimper of silver either, but a real, full on platinum-esque colour – think more heavy identity bracelet left in a jewellery box for decades as opposed to shimmery fairy wing silver and you are on the right lines. The pewter look is not designed to shine, so don’t be afraid to go all dull and matte, as for once in your life, boring is the way to go. If your personality means you crave blinging things up, go for a subtle reverse look where the lower arc of the nail shimmers, letting the fuller nail colour be centre of attention whilst the bottom acts like a spotlight to highlight the nail's beauty. All together now… ahhhhh…
If you simply can’t resist going all arty-farty with your nail look, then nail art stands firm with its absolute reluctance to become last season’s ‘thang’. As with last season, less is more, and as nail varnishes evolve at such an alarming rate that we await the varnish that creates a masterpiece on the nail as we sleep, even the most rubbish nail varnish putter-onner stands a chance. The 'reverse-mani' is huge news, with decorated cuticle areas making the nail tip redundant and probably rather sad if we’re honest, and full on multi-colour glitter is still fun, flirty and feminine, despite the fact it’s a shocker to remove. And of course, the current nation’s nail favourite, the accent nail, is still pushing its way into the foreground, allowing anyone and everyone to play around with their nail look. But whilst we wouldn’t normally advocate nudity, when it comes to Autumn 2014 and the nail, less is most definitely more. From the very palest of pinks, to clear, to even, dare we say it, nothing, this is the season for the lazy nail person. > www.selectionmagazine.com

IF IT DOESN’T CHALLENGE YOU IT DOESN’T CHANGE YOU
IF IT DOESN’T CHALLENGE YOU 10 > facebook.com/selectionmagazine IT DOESN’T CHANGE YOU
There was a time when all we wanted to be was thin, and the desire for a ‘Size Zero’ body was the ultimate goal. It will therefore come as a sigh of a relief that there is a new fitness inspiration to get us motivated – strength over skinny. What better way to get into shape than with a routine that will build your inner strength, tone your body and lead to an overall healthier lifestyle? With some hard work and some motivation, you too can be a part of this new fitness movement and discover that strong really is the new sexy. >
THE CONCEPT
We’re seeing a change in the types of women we see on our screens and in the pages of magazines. Female athletes are hot property, whilst there are a
number of athletes and actresses whose strength and beauty are sending a positive message out to women that health is more important than being skinny. More women are embracing the workout and lifestyle lived by men, taking on tough exercise routines which will help to build muscle and create lean bodies, but that also encourage eating to support your routine. With a wealth of support available online, it’s easy to get the information and inspiration you need in order to succeed. >
THE INSPIRATION
We are spoiled for choice with the number of female role models who are advocates for the movement. Ronda Rousey (Expendables 3), Jillian Michaels (Fitness expert and former The Biggest Loser star), Meghan Hardin (Professional golfer) and even home-grown stars such as
CReAte Gemma Atkinson (former Hollyoaks star and USA Pro model) and Millie Mackintosh (Made in Chelsea) are amongst the most well-known female celebrities who are sending out the positive message that women can have muscles too. Inspiring without being judgemental of others, it’s refreshing to see stars embracing their status as positive role models.
Amongst all the everyday make-up items that live in cutely designed make-up bags in the world today, there is surely no other that has undergone such a transformation year upon year than the mascara. From clump to spider, to falsies to a touch of colour, the next big mascara trend is always just around the corner. And as the one item that many women would refuse to leave the house without, no wonder the marketing peeps are keen to keep things fresh so we always remain happy to part with our hard earned cash in order to show our ability to stay abreast with the very latest look.

GETTING THERE
Many women tend to shy away from the weights section in the gym, but any fitness expert will tell you that weight training is one of the fastest ways to burn calories but we’re not talking about easy weights – if you want to see some real results, you’re going to have to lift heavier which will help to increase your strength and endurance over time. If you need tips or a boost to get started, you can find plenty of great workout ideas online in places like Tumblr and Pinterest, seek advice from a personal trainer or join a fitness group such as Cross Fit where the community spirit can help push you to achieve your desired results. >
SUPPORTING YOURSELF
By working out to get strong, you’ll be pushing your body to do things it has never done before, which requires a lot of energy as well as good nutrition. Protein is an important part of that diet and you should make it a key part of your daily food intake. Don’t be afraid to try protein shakes to get that extra protein boost – there are some great varieties designed exclusively for women to support your routine. >
THE RESULT
Working out to be healthy and fit rather than simply to get thin will change your outlook on food and exercise and make you feel more confident and capable. Through some hard work and exercise, you will be able to achieve your desired results and become strong and sexy, both inside and out.
And with this in mind, welcome to fibre mascara, the next wonder product to hit the world eyelash fashion and with the promise of making those bad boys look 3D! In other words, fibre mascara has the power to make lashes stand out from the crowd, giving them enviable length and texture never before seen, framing the face to perfection, and making your eyes well and truly ‘pop’. But before you grab your purse and whizz off to the nearest make-up shop leaving a swirl of dust behind you and putting the speed of Usain Bolt to shame, is mascara that can change the look of your lashes this dramatically actually truly up to the job, and also, is it for you?
the SCieNCe BehiND it If you are already chomping at the bit at the thought of eyelashes that flatter and flutter, then here is why fibre mascara is the most talked about mascara since the last big mascara. It is little surprise that the secret formula is maybe not so secret when you realise that it is the addition of fibres that leads to a look to rival the use of falsies. Made from nylon, the fibres ‘stick’ to the lashes, building on your natural lashes length and thickness and explaining just how this mascara has earned its reputation to being as good as using false lashes. Easy enough to apply and not
heAlth & BeAUtY impossible to remove, fibre mascara seems to make scientific sense and so may well offer a viable solution to those in search of mascara perfection.
hoW to USe it Of course you are unlikely to get a dramatic result without a bit off effort, and so the manufacturers that are causing the biggest sensation are those such as Younique who deliver the fibres in a separate tube. The idea is that by applying a specially formulated separate ‘mascara’ that acts as a kind of base layer, when you then add the fibres, they bond to your own natural lashes and create the thickening and lengthening effect. In a similar way to making a papier-mâché masterpiece, by adding those vital and magical fibre layers, the whole lash area gets bigger! Yes, this takes a little longer than the usual quick flick of a mascara wand, as well as a bit of practice, but everything that’s truly worth it in life is worth fighting for, and the reviews and general public opinion on fibre mascara is coming out as extremely positive.
iS it MY MASCARA SAVioUR? And so with so many positive reviews out there, as long as you stick to applying it as stated, fibre mascara seems set to make those who want a more definite lash look, or simply want to solve the problem of sparse lashes, very happy peeps indeed. Giving this a go is never going to cause you any serious angst so you can’t technically lose, but be aware that when it comes to mascara, the next wonder mascara may well be ready about to launch at any moment...

hoMe BUY A DESK Of course your child can do their schoolwork at your dining table, but a study corner in the bedroom will place a greater importance on their schoolwork and encourage independent learning. It also gives children a sense of responsibility as well as the privacy they need to get on with their work. Make sure the desk is of the right height, choose a comfortable but supportive chair, but don’t over clutter the desk itself. A clean looking desk invites clean looking work.
GET YOUR CHILD INVOLVED It’s important that your child has a sense of self in their own bedroom, which is why a child of school age should be able to choose some of the items for their bedroom, whether it’s the colour scheme, bedding or some artwork for the wall. This will make that room feel like their haven, and if they’re comfortable in it, then they are much more likely to want to spend time in it to study, play and learn.
CHILD FRIENDLY CLOSET As any parent knows, the morning routine needs to run like clockwork to avoid lateness and an abundance of stress. As your child grows they can start to do a little more for themselves. This could mean seeing and selecting their own uniforms and putting on their own shoes. A well designed closet that has these items located in a child friendly
manner that greatly encourages a child to speed up a little in the mornings with their new sense of responsibility.
ORGANISERS If children understand their own schedules they feel more involved and more important, meaning they will more likely be prepared for extracurricular activities rather than pull their face at the thought! You could have a wall chart, calendar, message board and mini organisers within your bedroom design to help them to keep track of any upcoming projects or activities. Despite all this organisation, your child should still have time to play in their room, so ensure that you don’t go too far with the schoolroom look. Retain some sense of fun, and keep toys within easy reach. After all, every child needs to play, and this helps them learn too!

Peek ‘a’ boo Monster Cakes The first half term of the school year and Halloween go, pretty much, hand in hand! So why not try these easy peasy monster cakes with your little ones. You can have lots of fun with these, making different colours, different eye types. You can even colour the sponge mix if you wanted to? Just make sure not to use too much, a little goes a long way when it comes to food colouring! The edible icing pens are easy to find, you can pick them up in Hobbycraft and also some supermarkets. Failing that, you can use the ready icing in tubes to do the pupil pattern, they are available in the supermarkets too. They’re so easy, you can almost just sit back and have a cuppa while the kids do it themselves. Have fun! Much Love, Fatty Boo xx
Moules à la Marinière This is a classic recipe that’s simple, too. Most of the work is preparing the mussels; cooking takes very little time. Crusty bread is essential for dipping in the buttery wine sauce. Ingredients - Serves: 4 2.25kg (5 1/4 lb) mussels, cleaned and debearded 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 onion, chopped two handfuls chopped fresh parsley 1 bay leaf 1 sprig thyme 450ml (16 fl oz) white wine 90g (3 oz) butter, divided
Prep:35min › Cook:15min › Ready in:50min Scrub mussels. Pull off beards, the tuft of fibers that attach each mussel to it’s shell, cutting them at the base with a paring knife. Discard those that do not close when you handle them and any with broken shells. Set aside. Combine onion, 1 handful parsley, bay leaf, thyme, wine and 2/3 of the butter in large pot. Bring to the boil. Lower heat, and cook 2 minutes. Add mussels, and cover. Cook just until shells open, 3 to 4 minutes. Do not overcook. Remove mussels from sauce, and place in bowls. Strain liquid, and return to pot. Add remaining butter and parsley. Heat until butter melts. Pour over mussels.
Cake Ingredients 100g Butter 100g Caster sugar 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract 100g Self raising flour 1/2 teaspoon Baking powder 1/2 teaspoon Bicarbonate of soda
Icing Ingredients 75g Butter (softened) 1 tablespoon Vanilla extract 1 tablespoon Milk Food colouring (Any colour) 200g Icing sugar For the eyes Large Marshmallows Edible icing pen (Any colour)
Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 160c / Gas Mark 3, and line a cupcake tin with the cupcake cases. 2. Put the butter and the caster sugar in a bowl and beat until thoroughly mixed together. 3. Add the eggs and mix in slightly, then add the Vanilla and mix until thoroughly combined. 4. Sift the flour, baking powder & bicarbonate of soda together, in to the bowl. Beat until combined, forming a smooth mixture. 5. Divide the mixture between the cupcake cases. You should get around 12 good sized cake 6. Place the cakes in the oven for 20 mins. They should spring back up when you touch the top. When ready, cool in the tin for 15mins before turning them out on to a cake rack to cool completely. Icing & Eyes Method: 1. Put the butter, vanilla & milk in to a bowl and beat until soft and mixed. If you are using food colouring, put the desired colour in to the butter mix and beat thoroughly. 2. Gradually sift the icing sugar in to the bowl and beat slowly, alternating between adding the sugar and beating every time. I usually do it 50g at a time. Beat together until an even colour is achieved and a smooth mixture is formed. 3. Take 6 large marshmallows and cut them in half with a sharp knife, careful not to swish them up to much. The take those two circles and cut the in half too. That should give you the eye shape. With the edible icing pen, draw the pupil pattern on to the non sticky side of the marshmallow, with the straight edge being at the top. That should make your pair of eyes. 4. Once the cakes have cooled you can pipe or spoon your icing on top, whatever is easier for you. Once you have your desired icing effect, press the eyes in to place so that they stay fast. There you have it, see… easy peasy!

ne of the great responsibilities entrusted to me as Crawley’s MP is to encourage the young people of our town to take an interest in the local community, current affairs and politics.
I always enjoy the conversations I have when visiting local schools and sixth forms. I generally begin by speaking briefly about my role, and I then take questions from students. These can range from my views on a specific issue directly affecting the town or our country, or asking me for my thoughts on a topic that is making headlines around the world. As well as visiting Crawley’s schools, I am always welcoming to classes wishing to come up to London, as I show them around the historic Palace of Westminster. I hope that by seeing where Members of Parliament debate the issues of our time, it may inspire a number
of students to take a greater interest in their local area and country. I also want to help with the day-to-day problems faced by our young people. Although the youth unemployment rate in Crawley has halved since last year to 2.2%, there is more that can be done. This is why I have organised the Crawley Jobs Fair for the last two years – to give employers and jobseekers a chance to meet, and I hope that people across the town found this year’s event beneficial.
engineering and maths subjects. Of course, my commitment to our young people does not stop here. If I can ever provide assistance, please never hesitate to contact me, either by calling my office on 01293 934554, by emailing me directly at henry.smith.mp@parliament. uk, or by writing to me at Henry Smith MP, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA.
Recently, I was honoured to receive the Youth Friendly Badge by Youth Employment UK, a leading national campaigning organisation dedicated to tacking unemployment among young people. This was a result of my engagement with schools and other community groups, and how I attempt to find practical solutions to issues such as sponsoring Crawley STEMfest over the past four years to encourage the take-up of science, technology, > www.selectionmagazine.com
