Spotlight > YOU HAVE SUCH AMAZING ENERGY. ARE YOU ALWAYS THIS WAY ON SET AND WHAT MAKES YOU MOST HAPPY AND FULFILLED AT THIS STAGE IN YOUR LIFE? JENNIFER ANISTON: I don’t know. The room. Look at the room. We’ve got a great room. > THERE’S A LOT OF LOVE IN THIS ROOM. JENNIFER ANISTON: Yeah. You can feel when there’s no love in the room and you leave that room. [Laughter] Right? Sometimes you can’t. I’m just excited. I’m happy. Of course, we’re not always happy, but there are moments of … It’s like when you get sick and you go, ‘Oops, I’m sick’ and then you get better and you go, ‘Oh my God! This is the most amazing thing in the world. Health. That’s awesome.’ You forget that you actually felt that way before you were sick. That’s a terrible analogy.

JENNIFER ANISTON

‘LIFE OF CRIME’ BY JENNY DAVIS Jennifer Aniston has been hitting the headlines recently after talking about the pressure on women to get married and have kids. The Hollywood actress said in a recent interview: “I don’t have this sort of checklist of things that have to be done, and if they’re not checked, then I’ve failed some part of my feminism or my value as a woman because I haven’t birthed a child.” “I’ve birthed a lot of things and feel like I’ve mothered many things, and I don’t think it’s fair to put that pressure on people.” Jen spoke about feeling “judged” for her life decisions while out and about promoting her latest movie ‘Life of Crime’. The film, directed by Daniel Schechter, is about a corrupt real estate developer [played by Tim Robbins] who refuses to pay his kidnapped wife’s [Jennifer] $1 million ransom so he can be with his mistress [Isla Fisher]. The dark comedy is based on Elmore Leonard’s 1978 novel ‘The Switch’ (the prequel to ‘Jackie Brown’). Former ‘Friends’ star Jen wears a blonde wig in the film to play Mickey Dawson and she joked during the film’s press day in LA that she looks like her mother Nancy. “I looked like my mom. I pulled out a lot of her old pictures and just tried to rock the old Nancy Aniston 1970s look,” she said. She also spoke about where she’s at in her life right now, her hate relationship onscreen with Tim Robbins, acting in a ski mask and her hopes to direct a full-length feature...

> SO HOW DID YOU LIKE RELIVING THE 70S FOR THIS MOVIE? TELL US ABOUT YOUR STYLE IN THIS? JENNIFER ANISTON: It’s a tough look. I mean, it was awesome for the time and a lot of fun to wear all of that polyester and the handkerchiefs around the neck. My favourite piece of my wardrobe was the sunglasses. Basically, I looked like my mom. I pulled out a lot of her old pictures and just tried to rock the old Nancy Aniston 1970s look.

> YOU ALSO HAVE TO WEAR A SKI MASK WITH THE DUCT TAPE OVER YOUR EYES. WHAT WAS THAT LIKE? ALSO, YOU GET ROUGHED UP A LITTLE BIT IN THIS MOVIE. HOW DID YOU PREPARE FOR THOSE PHYSICAL SCENES? JENNIFER ANISTON: I didn’t prepare. I just let them hurt me. That’s the best way to get a real reaction it turns out. And the ski mask was kind of great. It’s weird. It’s a lot to build to try to convey emotion when everything that usually does is covered up. It was really fun for me. We worked a lot on that ski mask. It was lined with silk so we didn’t get some rashes on the old faccia. It was a very well made ski mask. > AND NO HAIR AND MAKE-UP NEEDED FOR THAT DAY’S FILMING? JENNIFER ANISTON: That was the other fun thing. That day you didn’t have to put your eyes on.

4

> facebook.com/selectionmagazine

> THE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN YOU AND JOHN [HAWKES] IS INSTANTANEOUS. ALSO, WILL [FORTE] WAS ALWAYS IN THE BACKGROUND, BUT THERE WAS CHEMISTRY THERE, TOO. IT WAS LIKE A BACKSTORY THAT WE DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT BUT YOU GUYS DIALOGUED WITH YOUR EYES. HOW DID THE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN YOU GUYS PLAY OUT? JENNIFER ANISTON: I think that stuff is just natural. I don’t think you can force it or create it. We got along instantly when we met, and we were both interested actors. We’re interested in the story and that very subtle, odd, not even love story, but that’s sort of what unfolds which we both thought was really interesting. Chemistry is chemical, man. I don’t know how you make it. And Forte... look at those baby blues.

> IS IT EASIER WHEN YOU ARE WORKING WITH SOMEONE WHO IS OPEN AND GAME TO WORK? JENNIFER ANISTON: You really are better when you are working opposite fine actors. It somehow makes you look better.

> ALL THE MALE CHARACTERS FEEL LIKE THEY’RE IN CONTROL BUT THEY’RE THE MOST FECKLESS, AND THE WOMEN, EVEN IN THE POSITION OF BEING KIDNAPPED, STILL SEEM TO HAVE MORE CONTROL THAN THE MEN? HOW DID THAT MANIFEST IN HOW YOU PLAYED YOUR CHARACTER? JENNIFER ANISTON: It was pretty much on the page. Pretty much Mickey was living in the Petrified Forest with Frank [Tim Robbins’ character] and very repressed, emotionally abused, and had no way and didn’t even know how to make a move to get out of that jail. Oddly enough, the kidnapping is her ‘get out of jail free’ card. As the story progressed and her situation became more dire, that’s how she found that strength like women do when faced with unimaginable circumstances. > SHE SEEMS TO REALLY FIND HER VOICE. JENNIFER ANISTON: I’m not going to lose. > COULD YOU TALK ABOUT WORKING WITH THE GREAT TIM ROBBINS? WHAT WAS IT LIKE HAVING

spotlight FORWARD TO TRYING TO DO, EITHER AS A PRODUCER OR AS A DIRECTOR? JENNIFER ANISTON: To direct, absolutely. That’s the one, the next thing, the big hurdle I want to take on. I’ve done a few short films that I just loved the experience of doing, and I’m just waiting for that wonderful window and that wonderful script, and that will be the next one for me.

> IS THERE A GENRE OR A STYLE THAT YOU THINK YOU’RE GOING TO BE BEST SUITED TO, TO MAKE THAT DIRECTORIAL FILM? JENNIFER ANISTON: Well I wouldn’t say like horror films or like a Matrix kind of thing. > I’D LIKE TO SEE THAT. JENNIFER ANISTON: I’d definitely like to see it, too. But

HIM TREAT YOU LIKE SUCH A JERK? JENNIFER ANISTON: It was pretty awesome. I mean, he

I don’t think you’d like to see my directorial version of that. Everyone would somehow be really bad at it. Maybe that’d be fun. I love the human experience. I love human beings and behaviour and relationships, and it will probably have something to do with that.

really was a jerk. Just a jerk. No. He’s lovable and a teddy bear is an understatement. And he is quite towering. He’s a towering figure, for sure. With those scenes, it was really intense but fun and awesome to play, especially towards the end when she grows a good set of balls and just takes him over. It’s pretty fun. He’s a lovely man and I’ve known him for a long time. So, it was fun to have him beat me up a little bit.

> ONE OF MY FAVOURITE SCENES IN THIS FILM IS YOUR CHARACTER’S RELATIONSHIP WITH HER TEENAGE SON (PLAYED BY CHARLIE TAHAN) AND YOUR RAPPORT IN THAT SCENE IN THE CAR. HOW DID YOU GUYS DEVELOP THIS CHEMISTRY? HOW WAS IT PLAYING THE MOTHER ROLE?

> YOU WERE ALSO EXECUTIVE PRODUCER ON THIS. WHAT MADE YOU INVEST IN THAT PART OF MAKING THE FILM, TOO?

JENNIFER ANISTON: Again, it was pretty much written in the script. In that particular scene, it’s difficult because there isn’t that flow of communication that kids and parents have today where they talk about everything. It was kind of taboo to do [then]. She knew how bad the situation was with her husband, and she was hearing him kind of act out or throw away some jabs at him, and her first instinct was always to be the good woman and the good wife. And then, it was such a beautiful exchange between then because it was sort of silent. It was more of a… How would you explain it?

JENNIFER ANISTON: Well, Daniel Schechter. That was pretty much from the get go. I had a meeting with him and he just impressed me to no end. And I was so excited because I’ve always loved Elmore Leonard and I hadn’t read ‘The Switch’, which was the theatrical name. But then, we had to switch because there was already a movie called ‘The Switch’ about best friends making a baby. Then, I read the book and it was such a fun, wonderful story. I love how he writes his characters. They’re all so interesting and detailed. Also, his bad guys aren’t the brightest, but yet they somehow always make it happen. They’re the most charming and they’re actually lovable.I also thought that Mickey has such a beautiful arc and a powerful one in that time. For him to write that for a woman in the 70s was pretty awesome. The whole package was really exciting for me, and then, knowing that I would get to work with this man and Yasiin [Bey] and all those who were onboard already. It was pretty much a no brainer.

JENNIFER ANISTON: Acting with the eyes and also just with knowing that, ‘We’ll talk. I know that you’re unhappy and that you know that I’m unhappy.’ He obviously could see that he wasn’t treating me well. But at that time, she didn’t know how to tell him that she agreed with it. Again, it’s just one of those wonderful scenes that you get to play. It’s beautifully written and he’s adorable. He was a wonderful young actor.

> MORE AND MORE OFTEN, YOU WEAR DIFFERENT PATHS IN THE INDUSTRY. ARE THERE STILL SOME THINGS THAT YOU HAVEN’T DONE THAT YOU’RE LOOKING

> YOU ARE IN THE ADMIRABLE POSITION OF OTHER THAN ISLA [FISHER] BEING THE MAIN GIRL IN THE WHOLE FILM. WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM YOUR FELLOW ACTORS

> ACTING WITH THE EYES.

AND WHAT WOULD THEY SAY ABOUT YOU? JENNIFER ANISTON: That’s a very hard question to answer. You want to know what Isla would say about me? > YEP. JENNIFER ANISTON: I don’t know. Isla and I are really good friends and have been for a very, very long time. I think they would say we had a lot of fun together. We were all really excited to work together and that was clear from the beginning, from the first rehearsals. Our leader, Dan [Schechter], starts at the top with his enthusiasm and his love of all of the characters. I think that’s what they would say. I don’t know. Ask them. > WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM EACH ONE OF THEM AS ACTORS BECAUSE THEY ALL HAVE SUCH DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS? JENNIFER ANISTON: Oh my God, one of the beautiful things about these amazing [actors]… You always find surprises about people, about the way they work, and to see certain people come on and they just [bring it]. It’s there. And then, I love the curiosity – Tim, especially. John, especially. Will is just instinctual, I would say. And it’s wonderful to know that everybody has moments of getting stomped. Sometimes as an actor you go, ‘Oh God, I should know how to do this. I should know. I’m having trouble finding this moment.’ It’s great when you have actors that you can actually communicate that with and you don’t feel like, ‘I shouldn’t be asking.’ Everyone is a student. They were all so… I think we’re all always students and those guys especially. I mean, this particular team. It’s different than a comedy where you’re just riffing on each other. This was a real character study and trying to understand the story and how much you want to reveal. That’s my very Cuisinarted answer to your question. > WHAT DID YOU FEEL WAS YOUR CHARACTER’S DEFINING MOMENT? WAS THERE A SCENE IN PARTICULAR THAT YOU WERE WORRIED ABOUT GETTING ABSOLUTELY RIGHT TO DEFINE RELATIONSHIPS OR TONE OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT? JENNIFER ANISTON: Well, there were a couple. The scene when she goes back to confront Frank. That was one. Then there was the scene with the three guys and the mask and I’m trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Those were moments that I remember struggling with. And then, there’s also the scene when I’m asking John if he’s going to kill me. It’s hard to know the level of fear and hysteria. You just want it to be honest. Sometimes I found myself having a hard time understanding that because it’s so far away from anything I’ve ever had to walk through. Those were moments where you actually feel like when you’ve completed the scene you’re like, ‘Ah, I did it!’

Recreating Your Favourite Winter Celeb Looks On a Budget Autumn is here which means it’s time to say goodbye to our summer clothes and embrace the new Autumn/Winter trends. Whilst it’s great to try out new fashions, it can be expensive, especially if you are saving for Christmas or a special event. How do our favourite celebrities do it? Take a look closely at their style and you’ll soon find ways of adapting your existing wardrobe to fit in with the latest looks. We take a look at three of our favourite winter fashion icons to show you how to emulate their style effortlessly.

> facebook.com/selectionmagazine

Blake Lively

Sienna Miller

The former Gossip Girl star and Mrs. Ryan Reynolds is known for her California-girl looks, but has made New York City her home, making her winter fashion choices the envy of many. Blake is very clever with her outfits, choosing to add layers in coordinating colours as well as making use of accessories to make her style more seasonal. Opt for scarves, coloured tights and gloves which can all be snapped up affordably in order to add some special touches to your look.

There’s no doubting that Sienna Miller is one of Britain’s most stylish women. Hanging out with her other fashion pack friends including Kate Moss and Keira Knightley has surely given her some excellent pointers on how to dress for the colder weather. Sienna tends to opt for the layering technique, layering different length tops and jackets which add interest to the look whilst also ensuring warmth. Add a beanie and you’ve got a cosy winter look which can be thrown together from items already in your wardrobe. As a bonus tip, choosing darker and more neutral colour palettes for winter such as greys, blues, creams and blacks will look more seasonal than the brights typically associated with summer.

FAShion

Taylor Swift She may be young, but singer Taylor Swift has impeccable, classic style. For winter, she knows the value of a good coat, sticking to traditional styles which will continue to be in fashion year after year. But what is Taylor’s easy winter fashion tip? Opaque tights. Add yours to even your sunniest skirts and dresses to get more use out of them and to keep your legs warm. Like Sienna, Taylor is also a fan of hats, which can be an affordable accessory to change things up and keep up with the latest trends.

In many ways, winter fashion trumps summer and is much easier to improvise thanks to the wider range of accessories available. Popular advice if you’re on a budget is to invest in some key items, such as coats and boots which will last for more than a year, and therefore increasing the value you get from them.

Beauty

The look of B a l aya g e Remember that word “highlighting”? Strips of blonde and/or copper, wrapped in slithers of foil, or back in hair history, the cap with holes and a sharp needle poking into your scalp?

Well fashions come and go, and methods of hairdressing change, so welcome to the new ‘kid on the block’, Balayage. 8

> facebook.com/selectionmagazine

Beauty The word Balayage comes from the French language and means ‘sweeping’, and is a hair technique that has been used since the 1970’s in France, but is only recently hitting the UK. The idea is that unlike the more defined look of highlighting and the sharper edges of dip-dye and ombre, Balayage provides a more natural look, just as if the hair has been kissed by the sun, sprinkled with angel dust and brushed with the scent of a million sweet roses. Well, maybe not the latter two, but the sun-kissed look for sure. Balayage has been the celebrity secret of the last couple of years, but now the Cheryl Fernandez-Versini’s, Sienna Miller’s and Poppy Delevingne’s of this world are no longer the sole fashionista’s who can own this quite fabulous look, as

your local hairdressing fave should be able to create the same, or a look that’s even better!

potentially lighten and brighten the facial features too, naturally increasing its appeal.

The secret to the look is the freehand element to painting the colour on to the hair. So forget the cap, meche and foils, this is hair colour artistry in its purest form. And the advantage of this is the unique-to-you finish that it gives, giving you that individual look that you have craved for years.

Also, as the strong colour change lines don’t exist, maintenance is easier too. The hair re-growth is much more natural and as a result, potentially doesn’t need to be re-done as often. A hair colouring technique that not only looks super-fabby but could save you a few pennies too? Woo-hoo!

One of the other advantages of the Balayage technique is that it is suitable for any hair colour. As the idea is to create a soft look that softens the colour but still provides enough effect to show that you have a strong and contemporary sense of style, any colour can look amazing in the hands of the right stylist. This is a hair effect that is so versatile that it can

Its natural look is also perfect for hair colour virgins, or those who shy away from the bright pinks, platinum blondes or gothic blacks. Is this maybe a hair colour technique that is too good to be true? You’d better well Balayage-believe it!

hEAlth & BEAUtY

Cheek highlighting a gem of a make-up trick Do you crave that dewy, youthful glow that makes you look fresh for a busy day, even after a hard night out on the town? Do you want to give your face extra definition, slim down the overall shape as well as contouring the look of the whole body? Well one little gem of a make-up trick may be the answer to your prayers, and it is all in the highlighting of the cheeks. Blusher has been a woman’s best friend for generations. Historically known as ‘rouge’ (the French for the colour red), it has been used to add colour to the face and define features, and the use of it goes back as far as Ancient Egypt. There have even been periods where both women and men took to wearing it, but in

modern times, it is often listed as the one make-up item a woman couldn’t manage without. The first powder blush was made by the iconic French company Bourjois in 1863, with the general make-up fashion being to sweep the blusher along the cheek bone, but as knowledge and fashions change, there is now no one definite way of applying it, as different looks flatter different face shapes. But one cheek look that is currently sweeping not only the cheek area, but the make-up world is the highlighter. Highlight the cheek, and be prepared to get that “ooh don’t you look well”, “there’s something different about you”, and even better “you are looking younger” comment each and every day. So just which highlighters do we think are the bee’s knees? ‘Benefit’ have been known for their magical cheek products for years, with ‘Benetint’ proving that never

judge a product by how it looks in the packaging until it’s on the skin. Their ‘High Beam’ liquid highlighter is designed to be applied with a brush and dotted on to the higher part of the cheek bone then blended. The result is a shimmery look of loveliness that is mega youthful, gives the face an admirable look of glow perfection and more important, makes you feel ace. A little goes a long way and is highly likely to become a beauty must-have. For all ages of skin, Laura Geller’s highlighters make application a breeze. Available in a range of shades and looking like a work of art, they are literally baked to ensure a high quality and long lasting product and if you like a bit of shimmer, these will deliver that look without making you look like you are in a Christmas nativity at primary school. The colours look darker in the pot than when applied, with the result being a highlighting dream. Fresh, defining and sure to attract attention, positive of course, these are an investment in an enviable look. > www.selectionmagazine.com

W I N T E R WA R M E R S How to make your home warmer without turning the heating up!

Autumn is well and truly here and winter is just around the next bend. Cue multicoloured leaf explosions under your feet, which eventually turn into mulch, shorter days and a significant drop in temperature. This part of the year tends to make most people retreat into their homes, only to emerge during the delights of spring. If you're going to hibernate as such, do it in an environment that is inviting, appealing and most importantly warm! Is it possible 14

> facebook.com/selectionmagazine

to achieve warmth and still be sensitive towards style and design? The answer is yes. Here we show you how you can achieve this ambience. Pillows: There is a fine balance to be achieved here. Some people will overwhelm a room with cushions but rather than look stylish, the appearance is one of clutter. Choose pillows that are the same pattern but not necessarily the same colour. Cushions in fabrics such as chenille,

sheepskin and mohair velvet will add an extra level of cosiness to your room. Couple these with throws in similar materials and you can create your own heavenly corner of warmth in a room. Fire: An open fire is the ultimate accessory for winter to turn your home into a cosy retreat. However they are not always practical. A safer and efficient alternative is a wood burner. Not only can wood burning stoves add character to the surroundings

homE but they have financial benefits too, helping to reduce your household’s energy spend. Candles: This option is easy to act on and extremely affordable. Candles are a great way to add warmth to an environment, especially if they are scented. Not only do they look and smell great but they emanate a surprising amount of energy as well. Rugs: Many homes opt for easy to clean; maintenance friendly flooring such as laminate and wood, which is fine, especially if you are trying to create a natural feel, but during the colder months you may not think it was a very good idea! Rugs will add texture, colour and the warmth back into your home without you having to curse your choice of flooring. Go for rugs that cover the entirety of the room and then add extra pieces next to the bed, bathroom and if you have one, the conservatory.

Curtains: A pair of curtains is ideal to change up the design statement of a room. What is more, curtains will provide insulation to a room, keeping the warmth in and the chill out. Like pillows and cushions, your curtains of choice during autumn/ winter may be best in materials such as chenille and mohair velvet, the latter being an excellent fire retardant too. Working on design ideas that incorporate warm colours such as red, gold and bronze will ensure that even in the coldest months, you feel cosy. Perhaps look at accents such as throws that you can snuggle up under on those cold nights! Whatever you do this coming winter, ensuring that your house appears warm and welcoming will not only make you feel that little bit warmer, but your guests will love it too!

Chocolate & Pear Pudding As the weather gets a little colder, it’s not just our clothing that changes. So does our food! We crave things a little more warming and sumptuous, to satisfy and calm our winter blues. This pudding does just that! Paired (excuse the pun) with cream or custard, it’s a beautifully heartening dessert. Enjoy! TopTip: If you have leftovers, which is never the case in my household, it’s still a lovely treat to eat cold with a cup of tea. Just slice it up and away you go! Much Love, Fatty Boo xx

Blackberry and Apple Cobbler Very simple fruit pudding cooked with a scone topping; you can use almost any kind of fruit, just vary the amount of sugar accordingly. Ingredients Serves: 6 For the fruit 700g blackberries 700g cooking apples (or use dessert apples and reduce the amount of sugar to about 4 tbsp) 6 tbsp sugar 5 tbsp plain flour 1 tbsp melted butter

For the topping 150g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 60g butter 3 tbsp sugar 120ml buttermilk

Method Prep:30min › Cook:40min › Ready in:1hr10min Peel, core and roughly chop the apples and mix with the blackberries, sugar, melted butter and flour. Place in a 22x33cm ovenproof dish. For topping, sift flour and baking powder together. Rub in butter until mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. Stir in sugar and buttermilk. Drop spoonfuls of the topping mixture on to the fruit; it doesn’t have to be completely covered. Bake at 190 C / Gas 5 for about 30-40 minutes or until fruit is soft and topping is risen and golden.

Ingredients 2 - 3 tins Pear Halves (in juice) 50g Dark Chocolate 125g Plain Flour 2 tblsp Granulated Sugar 50g Milk Chocolate 125g Self-raising Flour 150g Butter 100g Caster Sugar 100g Golden Caster Sugar 1tsp Baking Powder 150ml Vegetable Oil 1/2 tsp Bicarb Of Soda 1 tblsp Vanilla Extract 2 tblsp Cocoa Powder 2 Eggs + 1 Egg Yolk Method: 1.Heat the oven to 160c / Gas mark 2. Grease a 20-23cm cake pan of your choice. Drain the pears and keep 6 tblsp of the juice to one side. Cover the bottom of the cake pan with the pear halves and sprinkle the granulated sugar over the top. Set aside. 2.In a bowl, melt the chocolate and butter together, over a pan of simmering water. Stir to combine and set aside to cool slightly. 3.Add the flours, sugars, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda & cocoa powder, to a large bowl. Mix together lightly with a wooden spoon or spatula. 4.Add the vegetable oil, vanilla extract, 4 tblsp pear juice, eggs & extra egg yolk, to the chocolate mixture. Whisk together until combined and creamy. 5.Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and whisk together thoroughly. Pour the batter in to the cake pan, over the pears. Shimmy the tin slightly to release any air bubbles and make even. 6.Bake in the middle of the oven for 50 minutes. Once baked, remove from the oven and cool in the tin for 10 minutes before turning out on to a plate, so the pear side faces up. Once turned out pour the remaining 2 tblsp pear juice, evenly, over the pudding. Leave for 5 minutes before serving up the warm pudding with custard or cream. Then kick back and watch their satisfied faces.

Henry Smith MP

Every so often – and increasingly in recent decades – there are issues of such constitutional importance that we must all be given a say. The future of the United Kingdom in the European Union is one of these matters. The last time the British people had a say on our membership of the then European Economic Community was back in 1975. I recently voted in the House of Commons, once again, for an in/out UK/ EU referendum. I am grateful to my Conservative colleague, Bob Neill MP, for introducing this legislation which my party is backing.

blocked by unelected Labour and Liberal Democrat peers in the House of Lords. This Government has introduced legislation creating a referendum lock in law, to halt any further transfer of sovereignty. The current administration also cancelled the previous government’s commitment to join the euro bail-out mechanism. I know how strongly people in Crawley feel about this issue – please be assured I will continue to fight for the referendum we want and deserve. As ever, Henry
