CRUISING

THE TOP TEN DESTINATIONS From Alaska to the South Pacific, there are many regions to enjoy from the comfort of a cruise liner - not forgetting The World Cruise. Few things compare with the joy of taking to the open seas and discovering far-off lands - whether that’s tiny tropical islands or sprawling global cities. The definition of indulgent exploration, take a look at our Top 10 Cruise Destinations for 2014, imagine yourself absorbing the cultures, flavours and calm that come with a holiday spent floating around such locales, and then get ready to go.

parks and chic nightlife, and the Yucatan peninsula’s abundant ruined temples (relics of the Mayan civilization) are all within reach whilst touring this neck of the woods. 8. Southern Africa Here’s where magical words such as Mauritius, the Seychelles and Madagascar start coming into play. That’s in addition to the obvious allure of South Africa, Tanzania and Mozambique on the mainland, offering a great mixture of landscapes. 7. South East Asia

10. North Atlantic Ocean From the Transatlantic rite of passage, to lush landscapes such as the Bahamas, Bermuda, the Florida Keys and northern tip of the Caribbean, the North Atlantic offers a multitude of delights. And we haven’t even mentioned the Canaries yet.

From Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia to Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, from sprawling futuristic skylines of glass and steel to ancient cultures and isolated beaches, this is one of the world’s most unforgettable regions.

9. Southern US States and Mexico

6. Alaska

The sticky heat of Louisiana’s swamplands and New Orleans itself, Florida’s theme

It’s cold, barren and thoroughly inhospitable. Needless to say, then, you

don’t come here for the weather. As one of the last surviving wildernesses on Earth, Alaska has been attracting cruises for decades because of its unparalleled, unspoilt icy vistas. 5. Mediterranean What the Middle Sea lacks in tropical climate, it makes up for with searing summer temperatures and a colossal amount of history, along with relatively short distances between ports making for fewer days at sea. One for the culture buffs.

4. China, Japan and South Korea A river cruise is unarguably one of the best ways to navigate China’s interior. Meanwhile by taking to the seas from Shanghai in the country’s east, the jawdropping beauty of Japan’s islands and South Korea are also yours for the taking. 3. Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific The downside here is that the Pacific Ocean is huge, so be prepared for a few days at sea in any itinerary. Nevertheless, from Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and

Wellington, to natural gems like the Great Barrier Reef and Samoa, it’s worth it. 2. Caribbean Whether it’s Barbados, St. Lucia, Curacao, Cuba, BVI or Antigua - to name but a few - it’s hard to deny that a Caribbean cruise is the archetypal luxury voyage, with tropical paradises lining up for you almost every day, thanks to the proximity of each island to its neighbour.

region may not shout quite as loud as its rivals, but there are very good reasons why shipmates return here year after year after year: serene landscape, clean air and the legendary Scandinavian hospitality. And don’t forget... The World OK, so this might be cheating, but we don’t care. The finest way to see every region of the planet is to embark on a mammoth cruise that will take in a little piece of them all.

TOP TIPS

ANTIQUE & CAR BOOT SHOPPING In the UK we love a bargain and many of us are often on the look out for quirky and unique items for our homes. Due to our country’s rich history our car boots and fairs are amongst the best in the world when it comes to buying beautiful antiques.

paying too much on over priced items. Through doing your research before hand you should be able to get a gist of how much similar items cost and know how much to expect to spend. Set a budget and haggle prices down to make sure you stick to it and get yourself a bargain.

There is a method to sourcing tip top antiques for your home, and it’s important you make sure you pay a fair price. Here are our top tips for shopping at antique fairs and car boot sales-

Take Measurements

Do your Research Before you set out on your search do a bit of research first so you have a clear idea of the kind of thing you are looking for. Impulse buying not only leads to over spending but it also means that you’re more likely to come home with something that doesn’t fit well in your home, do this often and your home will begin to look cluttered and unstylish.

If you’re looking to buy a piece of antique furniture take measurements of where you expect to put it before hand. Take your tape measure with you when you’re out and about hunting so that you can be sure what you buy will fit in your home, saving you from buying furniture, getting it home and finding out it’s too big for the space. Create a Wish List

Do some research online, looking at the different eras, styles and examples of what you are looking for.

Create a wish list of items you’d like for your home, noting them down in a note book you can have to hand. This way if you are looking for one particular item you can still have your list in the back of your mind while you are hunting so as not to miss anything. This will also stop you buying anything unnecessary.

Set a Budget

Think Outside the Box

If you haven’t got any kind of budget in mind you are more likely to agree to

Be open minded and creative when it comes to antique shopping. Items which

6

might have been very practical 100 years ago might not work in the same way today. Try not to stay focused on the function of items, instead think about how you could use something and alternative functions. Carry Cash Always carry cash when you are shopping at fairs. It will help you stick to your budget and you know you’ll be able to walk away with your goods on the day, rather than having to leave them behind due to payment issues. Remember never to show the dealer how much cash you have on you, always haggle before you get your cash out.

SPACE SEND OFF FOR DECEASED PETS... A Texas company is offering a unique send off for beloved pets by placing a portion of their cremated remains in a capsule and blasting them off into space. Celestis Inc, which has provided memorial space flights for human remains since 1997, will launch its first commercial pet memorial spaceflight in October 2014 with the remains of a blue merle Australian shepherd, named Apollo, the company said.

The pet services, such as one dubbed Earth Rise, start at $995 (589.21 pounds) and include having the pet’s remains flown into space on a commercial flight and returned to the owner. The space send-off options go up to $12,500, which allows the pet’s remains to be launched into deep space or to visit the moon.

YOLO IS AMAZEBALLS

AND IS NOW IN THE OXFORD DICTIONARY Side boob, vape and fast follower are among the latest buzz words to be found in OxfordDictionaries.com, the online version of the world famous Oxford English Dictionary. Frequent Facebook users no longer slyly boast about their exploits, they “humblebrag”. A person who wears a particularly revealing top may be showing off some side boob - and, of course, it can apply to a man as well. People no longer view a couple of episodes of their favourite TV show - they binge-watch it. And if you are looking for adventure, why not go for it? After all, you only live once - or Yolo. Then there is neckbeard, used to describe the type of facial hair that goes around the neck rather than the lower part of the face. Some people might call that crazy or, cray, if you want to be current. Other entries include adorbs - adorable;

8

listicle - an article made up of a list and amazeballs - impressive or very enjoyable. The new words, senses, and phrases are added to the dictionary when they have been around for a certain time and have been used enough to become established. Their inclusion acknowledges they have moved from trendy fringe use to widespread currency. Oxford Dictionaries editor Katherine Connor Martin said: “One of the advantages of our unique language monitoring programme is that it enables us to explore how English language evolves differently across the world. “Naturally, many words are used in similar frequencies in the UK and US, for instance the informal additions amazeballs and neckbeard. “However, some new slang and informal words catch on much more quickly in a particular variety of English.

times more common in the UK than in the US (although this is due in part to its frequent use in the British media), whereas adorbs is used about four times more often in the US as in the UK.” Source: news.sky.com

red and auburn tones. This colour looks great on tanned skin as well as fare so it’s the perfect way to transition into winter. Go for chocolate auburn now for a great tan enhancing colour, as your tan fades this colour will go just as well with paler skin, complimenting nearly every skin tone. Coral lips...

Barely there make-up... The natural look has ruled this summer, but rather than it being all about no makeup, instead it’s all about being clever with products to enhance your natural beauty and create a subtle sun kissed glow. By using concealer, highlighter and bronzer you can create a barely there make up look that still makes your skin glow and look flawless. It’s all about being subtle and clever with application- Conceal flaws, high light where the sun would naturally hit and contour using bronzer to make the skin look sun kissed and slimmer. Chocolate auburn locks... The hot colour for the fast approaching autumn/winter season is chocolate auburn. Think of a warm spicy brown with

The perfect accompaniment to natural make-up when you want to make a bold statement, coral lips in a matte texture are big news this summer. Try the Revlon Colourburst Crayon in Mischievous for a bold coral lip. Keep eyes natural with groomed brows and a slick of mascara on curled lashes.

Beachy braids... Boho hair has made a come back in the form of pretty festival eqsue braids. A great up-do option, braids are a life saver on those in between washes hair days. Opt for a half up do by plaiting the top half of your hair from the front and clipping round at the back. Or to put all your hair up braid your hair into two plaits and then clip both up neatly at the by wrapping them up at the back of the head. Falsies... Just because this year it’s all about looking natural doesn’t mean you can’t have fab long lashes. While make-up was kept mostly simple on the catwalk lashes were looking long and glamorous.

Graphic liner... A firm favourite this year, graphic liner has made a big come back. Graphic liner was seen on the cat walks on the catwalks on both the bottom and top lids, but for a more every day friendly option it is best to favour the top lids. Line lids with a black liquid liner and finish in a bold feline flick, for a day friendly option choose brown liner.

Pick up a pair of bold lashes from boots and apply last after you have finished your make-up, applying your mascara and letting it dry before you apply your lashes. Glue them as close to the lash line as possible, then using a nude shadow blend the line where the lashes join turning the black strip into a natural nude.

HAYFEVER

DON’T LET IT HOLD YOU BACK Hay fever is a common allergy that rears its ugly head during the summer months when the pollen count is high. For those who suffer it can make being outside unenjoyable, but when the sun is shining that’s the only place we want to be. Here are tips to help control your hay feverNatural Remedies Hay fever is an allergy to a natural substance; pollen. And there are some natural ways to reduce your hay fever symptomsTry eating a little honey every day. Honey is made from bee pollen and by consuming

it studies show that it gets our bodies used to the pollen reducing hay fever. For the best results eat local honey made from local bee pollen . Vitamin C is said to be a natural antihistamine, found in citrus fruits such as oranges. As well as this bioflavonoids are also found in citrus fruits which have an anti-allergy effect. Hot peppers are also said to help with hay fever. This is because they contain capsaicin which helps to open the nasal passages, clearing the congestion brought on by hay fever.

www.selectionmagazine.com

Antihistamines The best way to control hay fever is to take antihistamines to help reduce symptoms. Unfortunately there is no real cure for hay fever, but taking antihistamine daily can help. Take one antihistamine in the morning at least half an hour before you leave the house to help reduce the usual itchy watering eyes, streaming nose and sneezing. Various weather apps can help you determine what the pollen count is for the day too, so you can plan ahead. Try the BBC weather app for daily pollen forecasts.

MICROGREENS

THEY’RE BACK FROM THE 80S Microgreens were thought to be just a fine-dining fad in the 1980s. But now they are back, prized for their nutritional value and freshness - and they are extremely easy to grow yourself. Back in the 1980s the trend for microgreens emerged as a new fine dining ingredient. Many dismissed it as a new fad, but the 21st century has seen a resurgence of interest in these tiny culinary delights. For those who don’t remember the 1980s, microgreens are the shoots of salad vegetables such as arugula, Swiss chard, lettuce, mustard and beetroot, which are picked and served just after the first leaves have developed. The average crop-time for most microgreens is 10-14 days from seeding to harvest. Praised for their freshness, they are said to contain high nutritional content, and they add flavour, texture and a great visual dynamic to dishes. Nowadays they are most commonly used to garnish salads, soups, sandwiches and plates. Grow Your Own Microgreens

You can grow any salad green or herb as a microgeen. You can either buy pre-packaged organic microgreen seed mixes, or simply get a mesclun seed mix and grow them as microgreens. You can choose from a wide variety, in addition to those mentioned above, such as kale, endive, basil, cabbage, peas, spinach, radish greens, mizuna, beet greens and the old favourite watercress. They can be grown either in an outside garden bed or even inside on a sunny window sill. As you are harvesting them young, they will not need a lot of room, so scatter seeds about one eighth to one quarter of an inch apart. Then cover with an eighth of an inch of soil and water gently. For best results be sure to use an organic potting mix. It is a good idea to add in some organic fertilizer before planting the seeds as well. The seeds will require at least four hours of sunlight each day. If you’re growing them indoors, a south facing window sill is best for maximum exposure to sunlight. Diseases and pests should not be a problem, as the seedlings will be growing

for such a short period of time before you harvest them. Harvesting Your Microgreens The optimum time to harvest microgreens is after the first set of true leaves has grown. Experienced gardeners will be familiar with the phenomenon of seed leaves which appear first, so the second set of visible leaves are the first ‘true’ leaves. Seed leaves don’t actually resemble the true leaves. The true leaves should develop about 10 to 14 days after planting. To harvest, use a pair of scissors to snip the stem at soil level. Unfortunately, you cannot then use what is left of the plant for a further harvest as they have had such a short time to develop. However, the old roots can be left in the ground or seed tray as nutritious organic matter and the soil used for replanting more seeds. Growing and harvesting microgreens is so fast and simple that virtually any level of gardener should be able to do it.

The good news for gardeners is that while microgreens are a fine dining treat and rather expensive, they are actually very easy to grow yourself.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES TO TRY WITH YOUR FAMILY

Canoeing A great activity if you have kids who are ages ten and above, canoeing is a great summer holiday activity that everybody should enjoy. It’s great for everybody to try new activities, but especially the kids. There are canoeing centres across the country that teach you everything you need to know to enjoy canoeing safely, as well as instructors that will go out with you to make sure everybody is able to enjoy the activity and learn how to do it at the same time. Rock Climbing Another active one, rock climbing takes a lot of strength and concentration but it’s also great fun. You have to climb with an instructor to begin with, but if anyone is really keen you can then go on to do a course to be able to climb with friends and family rather than having to pay for an instructor every time. There are lots of indoor walls across the UK, starting from small walls for the slightly nervous to 30ft walls for the adventurous.

VISITING GRANDMA

HOW MANY WORDS?

Last week I decided to cycle to my Grandmother’s house.

Using the grid below, how many words can you find?

On the first day, I cycled half of the distance. On day 2, I cycled one half of the remaining distance. On day 3, I cycled three quarters of the remaining distance. On day 4, I cycled 10 miles. On day 5 I cycled two thirds of the remaining distance and on the final day I cycled the remaining 5 miles. How far is it to my Grandmothers house?

Each word must contain the central U and no letter can be used twice, however, the letters do not have to be connected. Proper nouns are not allowed, however, plurals are. There is at least one nine letter word. Excellent: 50 words. Good: 35 words. Average: 25 words.
