GLAMPING

GLAMOROUS CAMPING IN DEVON A great summer getaway option is glamping. For those unfamiliar with the term, this is a glamorous take on camping, perfect for a low cost break with a bit of added luxury that standard camping doesn’t usually provide. Devon is a beautiful part of the country, with many glamping options, so head down to this idyllic setting and get your glamping on this summer Where to ‘Glamp’

This yurt camp is located in the beautiful Dartmoor countryside. On 40 acres of woodland, it’s the perfect sociable glamping location for friends and family. The site has 20 fully equipped yurts, all of which have their own cosy outdoor fire pit. As well as all this ,the site also has a zip wire, adventure course, tennis court, farm animals and a children’s play area, so is great for the adventure-hungry and families! Blackdown Yurts

Devon has clocked onto the glamping market and there are glamping options spread right across the county. Cuckoo Down Farm Cuckoo Down Farm boasts three yurts and two safari tents, perfect for camping in style. The accommodation features country-esque styling, floral prints and wooden stoves. The yurts and tents are set in six acres of stunning countryside, complete with horses, sheep and chickens on the farm - a great choice if you’re glamping with the kids!

Devon Yurt Camp

For a more peaceful experience head to Blackdown yurts found on Blackdown Hills. The owners have tried to create a relaxing and non-commercial experience by keeping the outside of their yurts simple in the rolling countryside. Inside the yurts is luxurious, with sheep skins, organic cotton bedding and thick rugs. The surrounding countryside also offers lots of activities such as walking, cycling, hiking, horse riding and exploring.

Glamping Tips If you’re new to glamping take note of our top glamping tips to make sure you make the most out of your glamorous camping holiday! Take a couple of extra layers - Whilst this is camping in style, you might still get a bit

chilly in the evenings and during the night. Take an extra jumper or two to throw on in case of a particularly cold night. Pack toiletry essentials- Yurts are great and unique but don’t assume they will provide everything like a hotel does. Take your toothbrush, toothpaste and shower gel just in case.

Wellies are a must when out in the English countryside. Don’t let your bad choice of footwear hold you back and take a sensible pair! All Yurts and glamping tents should contain a proper bed and toilet facilities, so don’t worry about packing your camp bed and portable loo!

Above all embrace glamorous camping! Enjoy the beautiful Devon countryside and activities on offer, but make sure you take the time to relax, pamper yourself and enjoy a glass of wine or two by the camp fire.

RADIANT ORCHID

THE HOME COLOUR OF THE YEAR The 2014 Pantone colour of the year has been selected as Radiant Orchid, which is described as a captivating harmony of fuchsia and purple with pink undertones. Brighten up your home with this warming colour which is bang on trend for 2014.

MAKE CASH BY DE-CLUTTERING YOUR HOME A great way to update your home is to de-clutter, but many of us find it hard parting with all the bits and bobs we have hoarded over the years. A great incentive to de-clutter is the idea of making a bit of extra money by getting rid of unwanted items. You could even spend the money on some updated new pieces for your home.

Out With the Old Be ruthless when it comes to getting rid of things. If something has long gone out of fashion, hasn’t been used in the last 6 months or doesn’t really have a place in your home it’s time to get rid. We are far too keen to cling onto our old possessions, even when we don’t use or particularly like them any more.

Clear your home of unnecessary items and see what a difference it makes. Cash In Bear in mind at all times the saying ‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.’ All the bits and bobs you don’t want any more will be valuable to someone else and they will be willing to part with their hard-earned cash,

creating a little extra income for you! Check out local car boots, online auction sites and companies that buy your unwanted items. Sell up and if you so wish spend the extra cash on a few new pieces to complete your new de-cluttered home...just try not to fill your home up once again!

HOME

KITCHENS

HEART OF THE HOME ONCE AGAIN earth tones. It’s a fair bet to make that even Heston Blumenthal might have been swayed to adding a little splash of colour back at his home where nobody can see it.

Cooking shows of the 90s inspired a decade of sleek, chrome-clad kitchens, but nowadays, they’re becoming the warming heart of the home again. We take a look at what’s changed. Look back to the cookery shows of the late 1990s and early 2000s and you can see exactly where our kitchen inspiration came from - the anodyne, sleek, chromeclad kitchens of professional chefs such as Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver and Heston Blumenthal. All of a sudden the warm, cosy kitchens of our parents, the kind of kitchen which Grand Dame of home cookery Delia Smith would have prepared a roast chicken dinner in - wooden cabinets, tiled floors and floral curtains - were out. Instead, we were pouring concrete, installing stainless steel ranges and finding new and ingenious ways to open cupboards without using anything as unsightly as handles. The home kitchen became as close to the galley of a top London restaurant’s backroom as it was possible to get: a functional space in which to create corden-bleu spagbol and show off our collection of vintage Burgandies in the sleek built-in wine rack. But unless you’ve been hiding under a rock

8

for the past few years you can’t have failed to notice a change. Yes, many of us are still looking to Poggenpohl and Tecnocucina for sleek lines and white, white, white, but even more are putting the heart back in to the kitchen. It’s been happening for a while. Cath Kidston and Emma Bridgewater have been tempting us with spotty egg cups and cutesy 1950s inspired cutlery, Nigella Lawson has been extolling the virtues of her Kitchen Aid mixer as she licks yet another mixing bowl clean and Nigel Slater has made the move from print to television, picking ingredients from his allotment garden to make cosy suppers in his homely TV kitchen which might have the limited colour palette of the 1990s cookery show kitchen but which exudes welcoming warmth with bare wood and

Once again an Aga is the top of the kitchen wishlist. In every colour going it’s almost a shame not to buy one in bright red or retro yellow - even Ms Bridgewater has designed one in her trademark country kitchen-esque primary colour spot. A cast iron range is undoubtedly the central feature in any family kitchen worth its salt, but if you can’t afford one (and they are ludicrously expensive) adding heartfelt character to your kitchen is simple. Patterns such as spots, stripes, hearts and stars are cute and colourful whether on crockery, cutlery or just your tea towels. Attaching a devil-may-care attitude to tidiness is a must too, within reason... open shelving filled with colourful bits and bobs, pretty bottles, cookbooks and retro finds look great while hanging your utensils above the stove, or even pans from a ceiling rack has an olde worlde vibe and makes everything easy to find. There are endless ways to bring your kitchen in to the 2010s but the most important thing is to make it a living space once again.

FELINE EYELINER

HOW TO PERFECT THE LOOK The winged eyeliner look is a classic, perfect for all occasions and addin a little glamour to your look. It’s been a popular make-up look throughout the ages, particularly so in the 20’s, 50’s & 60’s, and of course the present day. It’s an especially tricky look to get right though and requires a steady hand and lots of practice. Here are the Selection Magazine tips on how to perfect the feline flickProduct Makes Perfect In order to get this look right you want a perfectly neat line which is also well pigmented too - wobbles and patchy colour just won’t do. The product you choose to create your winged liner look is key.

applying the liner. Using your finger pull the skin in the outer corner of your eye upwards a little so your lid is pulled taut. Start from the inner corner on your upper lash line and line along the eye, making sure you wiggle the brush in between the lash line for a seamless look. Work your way to the outer corner allowing the line to become thicker as you do, then flick the liner up and out towards the end of your eyebrow. The perfect feline eyeliner look.

When it comes to this specific style a liquid liner works best with a pointed nib. Pencil liner doesn’t create a graphic enough line and gel liner is easily smudged. Look out for a jet black liquid liner with a solid and pointed brush. Application The trick to creating that perfect graphic line is to always pull your lid taut when

Check List We all like to look and feel our best whilst on holiday, and the less time we can spend preening whilst we are on holiday the better. In the weeks running up to your holiday work your way through our helpful holiday check list so you’re all set to jet off in style-

Hair Maintenance

Stock up on several bottles of sun protection, choose a high SPF for when you first arrive and a lower SPF for when your skin starts to tan. Invest in a rich moisturiser for your face and body to hydrate your skin and prolong your tan.

Rather than choosing to go on the sun bed before you go away, why not choose a healthier option to look golden brown at the start of your holiday? Try using a gradual tan in the week before you go away, or a quality spray tan to help you look gorgeous from the moment you arrive.

HEALTH

HOW TO

BECOME A NATURAL RUNNER Running is brilliant for your health as well as your fitness levels. Running is a high impact cardiovascular exercise that uses large muscle groups and burns lots of calories. It’s a great way to aid weight loss or to improve overall fitness, but what if you’re not a natural runner? For some of us running can be really hard work and after the first attempt we want to give up. It is well worth persevering with though. Here are tips to become a natural runner! Don’t Run Before You Can Walk First time runners often go wrong by trying to bite off more than they can chew. Running is something you need to build up to and trying to go flat out when you’re not used to it is only going to end one way. The first time you get out to run look at it as a starting point, don’t feel defeated if you have to stop and start. This is just the beginning and with each run you’ll be able to go

12

for a little longer. The first time you get out to run start with a brisk walk to warm up. Aim for around 3 minutes of power walking, just from this you should feel your heart rate quicken. Increase to a jog, aim for small steps rather than long strides and keep your pace heavy. If you have to stop and walk for a moment do so, with out doing this you’ll only have to cut your run short due to exhausting yourself. Clever Nutrition There’s no doubt about it, running is hard work and in

order to run well you need to fuel your body properly. Now you’re not going to be running a marathon just yet, but the marathon advice is to eat carbohydrates around two hours before a run with little protein. Load up on low glycemic index carbs before you head out in order to fuel your body well with slow releasing sugars which will keep you going for the duration of your run. Ever tried running on a tummy full of sugar food? It’s not enjoyable! Avoid anything high in sugar or protein before you run. Brown rice, whole wheat pasta and whole wheat bread are

facebook.com/selectionmagazine

great options to fuel your run. Always eat a couple of hours before to avoid any nausea. Build It Up Once you’ve gotten your first run out of the way and you know you actually can do it then you can start thinking about progress. Remember when it comes to running there is no rush and pushing too hard too soon can cause set backs. Start to record your next few runs and track time and distance. There are great apps you can use such as Map My Run. Through this you will be able to see your pace per kilometre or mile and can use this data to set goals. Aim to increase pace or distance a little every week. Remember even if a month down the line you still have to stop occasionally this is fine, you are making progress and one day in the not too distant future you will be able to run a whole 5k happily and comfortably as a natural runner.

SUPPLEMENTS

SHOULD YOU BE TAKING THEM? The general thoughts behind supplements tend to be a little hazy. With mixed information many of us are unsure whether we should be taking them. Are they good for us, or aren’t they? It seems scientists and nutritionists can’t settle on an option.

Omega 3

This being said, there is some proof behind the benefits of supplements, so what should you be taking and why?

Iron

Vitamin C Vitamin C is great for the immune system, so if you are someone who suffers from regular sniffles and bugs it might be worth looking into taking vitamin C supplements. If you feel in good health it’s not completely necessary, but if you do feel unwell try taking vitamin C until the virus has passed. Studies show high quantities of vitamin C can shorten how long you suffer from a cold for.

Omega 3 is found in oily fish such as salmon, but is also available in supplement form. Omega 3 can help if you suffer from fatigue, so if you feel tired regularly try taking Omega 3.

supplements but don’t take iron for any longer than three months at a time. If you’re unsure about supplements seek medical advice. Taking the right supplements can go a long way to rectifying health issues.

Those who suffer from low Iron levels are known as being Anaemic. Iron can be taken to top up low levels but shouldn’t be taking regularly for long periods of time. If you find you are often tired the issue may be your iron levels. Get tested, and if this is the case try

FOOD

PUDDING TIME

PERFECT DINNER PARTY DESSERTS Dinner party desserts should pack a punch when it comes to flavour and presentation, but they should also be easy to serve up to the masses and still appear impressive. Here are two dessert ideas, perfect for serving at your next dinner party.

CHOCOLATE COCONUT BANOFFEE PIE You can’t go wrong with a chocolate based dessert, try this unique twist on banoffee pie- easy to serve up and looks great with a scoop of coconut ice-cream and chocolate shavings

Ingredients

300ml double cream

Serves 10

For the base: 200g creamed coconut, chopped roughly 400g digestive biscuits

400g can caramel 100g good quality dark chocolate 4 bananas sliced coco powder for dusting For the coconut cream: 400ml coconut milk 4 large egg yolks 4 tablespoons sugar 2 tablespoons plain flour 1 tablespoon corn flour 2 tablespoon Malibu

16

Method For the coconut cream: Bring the coconut milk to a simmer. Whisk together yolks, caster sugar and flours. Add the warmed coconut milk and whisk together. Return to the heat and stir

constantly until thick and glossy (at first will appear lumpy but keep beating until smooth) Simmer for two minutes, then take off heat and add Malibu. Cover and leave to cool. For the base: Melt creamed coconut in a pan, stirring constantly. Bash biscuits into fine crumbs. Mix crumbs with melted coconut, then press into a loose bottomed tin and chill. Next pour caramel into the pan with the chocolate and

facebook.com/selectionmagazine

melt together. Arrange sliced bananas on the base. Pour over the chocolate caramel mixture and leave to chill for one hour minimum. When coconut cream has gone cold place in bowl with double cream and whisk into thick peaks. Move into plastic food back and chill. Just before serving cut off corner of plastic food bag and pipe cream onto the pie. Dust with coco powder.

STICKY TOFFEE TARTS An impressive combination of sticky toffee pudding and tarts, these are great as you can make individual tarts for each guest.

Ingredients Makes 6 tarts For the pastry200g butter in cubes 225g plain flour 100g light muscovado sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 large egg yolk For the Sauce: 200g light muscovado sugar 50g butter 250ml double cream For the filling: 250g dates, chopped 200ml milk

50g softened butter 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 100g plan flour 1 tablespoon bicarbonate of soda 50g ground almonds 2 large eggs 100g light muscovado sugar 2 tablespoons treacle Vanilla ice-cream to serve

and blitz into fine crumbs. Add sugar and pulse. Mix vanilla and egg yolk with a little water and dribble in whilst whizzing. The pastry should now come together. Roll out pastry, use a cutter to cut the tart bases. Place into individual tart tins and prick the bottom.

Remove baking beans and bake for a further 5 minutes Add one tablespoon of the sauce to each tart.

Method

Melt the sauce by melting all ingredients together and simmer for around 5 minutes. Set aside to cool.

Cook for 15 minutes at 160C.

Put chopped dates and milk in a pan and bring to the boil. Set aside to chill for 30 minutes. Make the pastry- Put butter and flour into food processor

Mash date mixture then tip into a bowl with the filling ingredients. Whisk together with electric whisk then divide between tarts.

Heat oven to 200C, add baking beans to tart bases and blind bake for 15 minutes.

OUTDOORS

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

FOR THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR HOME Whether you’re looking to sell up or you’d just like to impress friends and family with your home, first impressions really do count and the outside of your home is where visitors will create their first impression.

Adding Details

Spruce up the front of your house to ensure visitors are wowed from the moment they first set eyes on your home.

Pop two deep green bushes in large black plant pots either side of your front door to create an expensive look.

It’s not just the inside of your home that can benefit from accessories! Add a few luxurious details to the outside of your home to give a great first impression.

Touch Ups

GETTING YOUR INVOLVED WITH A great way to get your children out in the garden and helping you around the home is to introduce them to gardening. It’s a great skill to learn when you’re younger and children really enjoy having their own patch to look after.

Your front door is often the focal point of the outside of your home, dull chipped paint and dirty door knobs just won’t cut it. Pick a colour for your front door that stands out and sets your home apart from the rest of the houses in the street, postbox red, butter cup yellow and sky blue are great choices.

Gardening Freedom

If your door knob, doorbell and knocker are looking tired choose to replace them with top quality brass options. If they are still in good condition make sure you give them a polish every once in a while. Keep lawns well looked after, mow and weed them regularly, make sure you pay extra attention to the edges that line up with your garden path or drive way, trimming down any long pieces of grass that you’re unable to get with the lawn mower.

18

TOOLS FOR TO

Gardening is the perfect way to introduce your children to making their own decisions and experimenting with creativity. Select a small patch in the garden that they can call their own. Show them the patch and tell them they can grow whatever they like here, then take a trip to your local garden centre and let them select what they would like to plant - flowers in all sorts of colours,

1440 LEGS

HOW MANY WORDS?

At the local Sunday School meeting, the teacher brought in some puppies.

Using the grid below, how many words can you find?

There were 20 more children than puppies.

Each word must contain the central C and no letter can be used twice, however, the letters do not have to be connected. Proper nouns are not allowed, however, plurals are. There is at least one nine letter word.

In the corner of the room, within the ant’s nest, the number of ants was 10 times the number of children. In total, including the teacher, the children, the puppies and the ants, there were 1440 legs in the room. How many children attended?

Excellent: 36 words. Good: 28 words. Average: 21 words.

DOWNHILL BIKE RACE At a recent downhill mountain bike race, four entrants entered the challenging slalom event. Alan came first. The entrant wearing number 2 wore red, whereas John didn’t wear yellow. The loser wore blue and Steve wore number 1. Kev beat Steve and the person who came second wore number 3. The entrant in yellow beat the entrant in green. Only one of the entrants wore the same number as their final position. Can you determine who finished where, the number and colour they wore?

TEA OR COFFEE? Imagine you have one cup of tea and one cup of coffee. Place a spoonful of the tea into the coffee and stir well. Then place a spoonful of the tea/coffee mixture back into the tea. Does the cup of coffee now contain more tea, or the cup of tea more coffee?
