ON THE COVER THIS MONTH: Cold temperatures and snowy weather go hand-in-hand with the winter season and Blue Mountain wants to keep it that way. To help raise awareness about the potential impacts of climate change and encourage skiers and snowboarders to take steps to reduce their own environmental impact, Blue Mountain Resort hosted its eleventh annual Keep Winter Cool event on March 13th. There were educational and fun programs for the entire family. This year’s event featured everything from Elephant Thoughts 18-foot inflatable polar bear, McMaster University’s solar racing car, Earth Rangers’ Animal Ambassadors, an off-the-grid DJ show, the Collus Renewable Energy Trailer, and more!

April is here! Let’s hope the typical spring weather comes soon. As I type this there is a blizzard out my office window. As beautiful and unique each snowflake is, I would much rather be enjoying the beauty of crocuses and daffodils popping up. I look forward to storing the winter clothes and boots for another 7 or 8 months in my crawl space.

Keep Winter Cool Day at Blue Mountain
We live in a world surrounded by technology, from smart phones to iPads to computers and video games. It is important to keep up with the latest high-tech gadgets, but it is also important to take a break from technology. Each device may only use a small amount of energy but when all the devices in your house are combined it could add up to a fair amount of electricity and battery use.
Cold temperatures and snowy weather go hand-in-hand with the winter season, and Blue Mountain wants to keep it that way. To help raise awareness about the potential impacts of climate change and encourage skiers and snowboarders to take steps to reduce their own environmental impact, Blue Mountain Resort hosted its eleventh annual Keep Winter Cool event on Thursday March 13th. This year featured everything from Elephant Thoughts’ 18-foot inflatable polar bear, McMaster University’s solar racing car, Earth Rangers’ Animal Ambassadors, an off-thegrid DJ show, the Collus Renewable Energy Trailer, and more! Reinforcing Blue Mountain’s corporate commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of our operations, Keep Winter Cool stands as one of Blue’s signature March Break events. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography
Aside from the amount of electricity that these devices use it also means kids are not being as active as they could be. Kids will learn how to use high tech devices quickly enough and will certainly surpass our generation in their use. So instead of teaching your child to play games on a computer or iPad take some time to play with some more traditional toys like blocks or dolls. Building toys like Lego and Meccano teach them to use their hands for more than pushing buttons or touching screens. Craft kits inspire creativity, science kits encourage understanding, puzzles help solve problems, games to inspire interactaction with others and of course active toys to get that heart pumping. If you have children, you know that they have boundless amounts of energy. It only makes sense to use this energy to power their toys. At Minds Alive we carry a wide variety of eco-friendly, non-electric, kid-powered toys & crafts. 27 Hurontario St. Collingwood 705-445-6222 www.mindsalive.ca

Protecting the future starts today. We believe that making responsible choices today helps to create a more sustainable tomorrow. We also believe in rewarding our clients who do the same.
Healing Touch... How Can This Assist Healing And Alleviate Pain? Have you ever wished YOU could do SOMETHING to help alleviate the suffering of a friend or loved one? Did you wish you could do something to gently assist them with pain relief, accelerate wound healing, reduce their anxiety or help them in their recovery from surgery? If so, then it’s time to consider the Healing Touch Certificate Program. Healing Touch (HT) is a relaxing, nurturing, energy based therapy which uses gentle touch to assist in balancing physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. It is safe for people of all ages, and works in harmony with standard medical care to support one’s innate ability to heal. Janet Mentgen RN, Founder of HT, wanted to bring the human connection back into Nursing. Blending the best of Eastern traditions with Western science she developed the standardized curriculum that is now the HTI Healing Touch Certificate Program. She believed that “HEALING TOUCH” is the art of caring that comes from the heart of the healer and reaches to the person who is receiving help. Nurses said this work felt like “coming home”. There are no pre-requisites or prior training needed. This Nursing Education program is opened to all health professionals and lay persons wanting to study and practice energy based HEALING ARTS.

Unexpected Benefits of Yoga
Financing available from $149.00 per month, good & bad credit approvals.
Many people come to a yoga class for increased flexibility, increased strength, to reduce stress and as a pathway to physical fitness. These goals are certainly realistic - however, with regular yoga practice some unexpected benefits may begin to unfold: When you are connecting the mind and body through the deep, even, easeful yoga breathing that yoga classes are known for, you can begin to experience more selfawareness, more clarity, more balance and focus and begin to cultivate a sense of being more fully alive! This has been my experience and why I became a yoga teacher. When I am on my yoga mat, using my deep, even yoga breath to help me stay with a yoga pose when I am uncomfortable (but not in pain - yoga should not create pain), has helped me develop skills that I use off my mat when LIFE becomes uncomfortable : 1) yoga has increased my ability to stand back and let things unfold as they will rather than stressing myself out trying to force an outcome. It’s amazing what taking just one deep breath can do! 2) yoga has grown my integrity. By promising myself that I am going to stay in a particular pose for 10 breaths - and then doing it, whether it is comfortable or not translates into me keeping other promises to myself: cut down on sugar, walk the dog every day etc. 3) yoga has increased my “stick - to - itiveness”! Staying with a yoga pose and using my breath to find ease and stability allows me to stick to difficult decisions, and to see things through even if they become uncomfortable Who knows what yoga has in store for you? I invite you to try a yoga class (there are many wonderful choices in this area!) and see what you can discover for - and about - yourself!! March Break at Blue After a couple of years of less than stellar winter weather, the conditions this year couldn’t have been better to enjoy a fantastic March Break at Blue Mountain! CityTv Breakfast Television host Jennifer Valentyne and crew hosted a live event to get the week long party started off on the right foot. The week had just about anything families could want from great on hill ski/snowboarding activities, village entertainment including concert performances by Fefe Dobson and others to scavenger hunts, horse and wagon rides and family fireworks. Bryan Davies - Photographer
Award winning wildlife and nature photographer Carol Norris was born in the United Kingdom and moved to Canada nineteen years ago. Shortly after emigrating she received a camera as a gift. With it she could capture the images of wildlife and the outdoors that she loved, this fuelled her passion to excel as a photographer.
Artist, writer, and world class photographer Bryan Davies has spent the past 32 years developing his unique style of visual communications. From his digital studio and fine art gallery in Creemore, Bryan Davies creates high impact Fine Art, Commercial, Editorial and Portrait images with strong emotional appeal.
Fifteen years ago she opened her first gallery in Southampton and recently relocated to a larger store at 173 High Street, Southampton, which enabled her to display larger pieces of fine art photography and a wider choice for her customers to choose from. The new Light House Photo Gallery displays Carol Norris’s fine art photography, which is NOT digitally manipulated. The collections includie wildlife, nature and landscape photography from all over North America and Europe. Sizes and frames can be custom made to fit customers homes as well as standard sizes. Norris also makes home consultations. The Light House Photo Gallery displays traditional framed photographs, the exciting new modern frameless acrylics, metal prints and canvas. All photograhs can be produced in any of these styles. Many of the images are available to view on the website www.carolnorrisphotography.com The Light House Photo Gallery 173 High Street, Southampton Ontario N0H 2L0. After graduating from Humber College in Visual Communications, Bryan joined The Kortright Centre for Conservation as Resident Nature Photographer. Bryan also worked as still photographer on one of David Suzuki’s Nature of Things episodes. Bryan has travelled to many exotic places in the world (and is in Cuba as I type this) creating a wonderful tapestry of unique photgraphic art. He also traveled to Beijing, China to take part in a cultural exchange with Chinese photographers, artists and curators. But locally, Bryan covers the events for Georgian Life in the Creemore area. Aviation is for everyone The volunteer members of COPA (Canadian Owners and Pilots Association) and Women in Flight organized a very successful event at the Collingwood Regional Airport in recognition of International Womens Day. Girls and women were invited to test out the flight simulator and take a free discovery flight high over Collingwood, Blue Mountain and Wasaga Beach. It was an amazing afternoon! Thank you to Marsha Ramage from COPA, and Dave from Genesis Flight Centre for such a scenic and safe beautiful flight with my mom and daughter, and Doug Measures for waiting around to take our pics! For travellers that want the ‘world to be their oyster’, Brenda Chapman’s Marlin Travel in Collingwood can be the pearl at the centre of their experience. Since 1987, Brenda’s Diploma in Travel and Tourism has led her on a trip of training, education, and adventures that would help her open up the world to thankful customers. Soon after graduation and a 3 year stopover at Marlin Travel Etobicoke, she made the move to Collingwood to open up her own agency. It was a natural choice with Simcoe County being a tourist destination itself, its residents also had the wanderlust that would benefit from Brenda’s knowledge and expertise.

Whether it be by train, plane, bus or boat, in a hotel, chalet, or near a beach to play, Brenda’s expert team of 6 dedicated, knowledgeable, trained and Licenced staff can get you where you need to be on the globe. They assist with the decisions and details that make your destination a pleasure to plan, like issuing airline tickets, securing Visas, automobile rentals, cruises, charters, tours and more... all from the comfort of your hometown or home (on the Web!). Some of the staff’s recent training experiences might inspire you to take the road-less-travelled, like an amazing Alaskan Cruise, a jaunt to an Irish Bed and Breakfast, or discovering the wonder of India. The family favourite of Disney parks and resorts is made even more magical when Marlin makes the perfect plan appear. If you’re in love and love travel, Brenda arranges Destination Wedding Groups and family gatherings, as well as Sports Teams travelling together as her specialties. They work hard to be the best in the industry, and offer great rates and bonuses for groups.

“Would you like to try the Polar Bear Dip?” Thanks for asking but I’ll stick with the hot salsa! Thankfully a good number of ‘crazies’ were willing to brave the elements, the bitter cold and take up the challenge in the 2nd Annual Meridian Collingwood Polar Bear Dip, in support of the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital Foundation. Dressed in all kinds of colourful outfits they jumped, cannon-balled or anxiously slid through the ice hole into the frigid harbour water assisted by emergency personnel from our good friends at the Collingwood Fire Department. A frigidly fun and successful event in support of a great cause! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Eating local food… it’s good for the earth At the Collingwood Community Food Co-op we strive to source food items from local suppliers, growers and creators, prior to looking elsewhere. With this approach we are keeping our dollars local, helping to keep farmers on their land & bakers in their kitchens, and it also reduces the carbon footprint of your field-to-fork meal. Who can shop at the co-op? Everybody! The co-op is open to the public. Being a Member of the co-op is encouraged for our longterm success… and membership has its benefits! All members receive 10% off their store purchases, and those who volunteer regularly can receive upwards of 20% off. Membership information is available in the store and on our website: www.ccfcoop.ca On our shelves you will find organic produce, local milk & cheeses, foods prepared in our Kitchen, local grass-fed meats, cage-free eggs, a variety of gluten-free items and a wide variety of packaged items. There is more… you will have to step in to our store on Simcoe Street to see it
all! We are pretty new here in Collingwood, opened our doors in December 2012, so we would love to receive your feedback on what you would like to see on our shelves, as well as in our events calendar.

Solar Heats Water You’ve been through a long winter. Power outages. Rising food prices. Increasing fuel prices. Should you be thinking about energy security and food security? Many people are. Whether it is for financial reasons like trying to lower your energy or food costs or because you want to consider renewable sources for energy or because you want to increase the amount of fresh produce in your diet, food security and energy security are attainable goals. Right here in your community! We can design and install an energy plan to lower your monthly costs and provide electrical energy to your home should power from the grid be interrupted. We can sell you a geodesic dome where you will enjoy year round gardening to grow your own fresh veggies. Better food from your own backyard. Eat better and save money. Some organizations, such as campuses for colleges or condominiums or developments for senior citizens, are moving toward the idea of being more selfreliant on power and food. Combining gardening activities and using solar energy to power your home will reduce costs, improve the freshness of your food and let you be good to the environment at the same time. This is an amazing time to connect ecology and economy. If you want to try being a little more self-reliant and don’t want to go completely off-grid, use a small scale solar energy system for some of your electrical needs...and it’s a great way to reduce your monthly hydro bill. Households can install occupancy sensors and timers to further reduce electrical demand in rooms after people leave the room. Our systems will make sure your sump pumps, medical equipment, alarms and security systems will have power when you need it. Take an inventory of your electrical needs by consulting with Solar Heats Water to explore solar panels as an alternative energy source. Let us be a part of your energy saving action plan in 2014. Call us to get a geodesic dome to let you garden year-round. You’ll be glad you did. Solar Heats Water is a division of Beach 1 Electric Ltd. Unit 2 - 24 Ronell Cres. SPRING IS COMING! These local businesses can help with your outdoor, yard & property needs Horner’s Weed Control & Lawn Care
Keep a pet-safe yard this spring (NC) The yard can be a wonderland for your pet, full of interesting smells, grass to roll in, bugs to chase and shady spots for naps. But if you use fertilizers, pesticides and other chemicals, it can be a potentially dangerous place for pets too. Dr. Simon Starkey, a veterinarian with PetSmart Canada, gives us some important aspects to keep in mind for a safer outdoor adventure: Pesticides: Slug bait and pest poisons are particularly dangerous because the taste entices pets to consume them. Small quantities can be very dangerous to your pet. Ask your local nursery for pet-friendly gardening products and follow application instructions carefully. Tightly seal containers and store them in a secure place. Poisonous Plants and Mushrooms: There are a variety of poisonous plants and flowers that are dangerous to curious pets. Some common poisonous plants include azaleas, lilies, bulb flowers (like tulips), onions, tomato vines and poppies. Mushrooms are the most commonly ingested organic material in the yard. Remove them. Mushrooms are a fungus and they can grow quickly, even overnight, so check your yard frequently. If you suspect your pet has encountered any of the above, be sure to take them to a vet as soon as possible. Visit www.petsmart.com for more information. www.newscanada.com

Depave Paradise is a project of Green Communities Canada and our local partners in nine communities. The Environment Network in Collingwood with volunteers within neighbourhoods have been removing unwanted pavement and planting gardens filled with native species in its place. Why Depave? Hard surfaces, such as driveways, parking lots and buildings interrupt the natural water cycle by preventing rain water from soaking into the ground and creating heat sinks; warming up our cities. By removing pavement and replacing it with native plants, and trees we are increasing the infiltration rate, recharging our groundwater supply, and cooling our neighbourhoods.

20th Annual Magic of Children in the Arts
Up to 99% OFF First Month
The event was founded in 1994 by local artist Lory MacDonald. With the help of parents and volunteers, it evolved into an annual event at the Collingwood Public Library. They’re celebrating 20 years this year and are still excited about helping youth experience the benefits of making art. Their mission is to inspire and encourage children to create, exhibit and celebrate art. The result is a spectacular display of over 400 artworks created by children from our community.” Congratulations to Lory, the wonderful volunteers and the talented young artists. Profile on Business - Suze Interiors - Bringing your space to life! “Whether a client wants us to stage their home for a quick sale, redesign an existing room, or completely transform an empty home, when they walk in the door and the final design is revealed, their smiles make our efforts worthwhile.” says Suze McCart. Since 2006, Suze Interiors has earned a solid reputation among realtors and home owners for delivering proven results. Suze started her business in Vancouver after graduating with honours and receiving her Interior Decorating Diploma. After 20 years on the west coast, Suze decided to relocate her business to Collingwood in the spring of 2013 and is now delivering that same quality of service back in Ontario. For the certified interior decorator and home stager, connecting with clients is priority one. Suze has an extensive background in hotel management and providing every client with a consistent, high level of service is what she strives for every day. With extensive inventory of furnishings and decor available, each home is custom staged to suit its architecture and style. The staged homes sell in record time, often over list price. With the right staging or redesign inside and enhanced curb appeal outside, your home can appeal to more people, attract the highest bidder and sell quickly.
a small investment of a couple of hundred dollars, your space can be transformed, one that you fall in love with again. Suze has enjoyed a life-long passion for creating beautiful spaces that are as stunning to live in for homeowners, as they are staged to appeal to home buyers. Her talent, enthusiasm and warmth are all reasons her clients continue to refer Suze Interiors to their friends and family. We recently were given the gift of a 1 hour colour consultation with Suze from Suze Interiors. Suze was extremely friendly and very talented and knowledgeable when it came to choosing colours for our home. She was very respectful and listened carefully to the kind of atmosphere I was trying to create in our home, and it was very exciting to have her choose colours that brought our furniture to life so we didn’t have to buy more. Thank you Suze!” - Lynn Cook, Home Owner, February 2014 Home staging and redesign can transform any space. See the difference for yourself. Scroll the “before” and “after” pictures on Suze’s website www.suzeinteriors.ca.
One thing that Suze has discovered over the years of helping home owners create beautiful spaces, is that often when they get a home decluttered and spruced up they wonder why they didn’t do it years ago. Upon that discovery, Suze has specialized in helping home owners with repurposing their existing pieces, sometimes moving things around from room to room can make your house feel brand new again. For

A 3 year old Hound Cross - was found wandering the streets on his own. He is very friendly, working extremely hard on his manners and loves to go for walks with his Gentle Leader on. Red loves to spend time with people, play outside, and just be someone’s companion. He has been at GTHS for a little while now, so he would love to find his forever home very soon. Please come down to the Shelter and meet this lovable boy today!
Touring the Hospice Georgian Triangle Building Hospice Georgian Triangle Foundation celebrated the construction progress of Campbell House by inviting the public and donors to tour the partially completed interior of the six bed Palliative Care Facility in Collingwood. Campbell House is named in recognition of the family of Donald and Audrey Campbell who were major donors to the project. Bruce West, Chair of the HGT Foundation said that ground was broken last August and he is pleased with the construction progress which should be completed and ready for clients to move in during the summer. Autumn
Handsome Autumn is just 4 years old and was surrendered to GTHS. He is extremely affectionate and loves being the centre of attention. While he does not mind cats, he definitely does not like dogs – so a dog free home is his choice. Autumn is currently on a low calorie diet to help him with his weight (and it’s tasty!). Now all he needs is a quiet, loving, forever home that will give him the love and attention he deserves!
Please note: these animals were available for adoption at the time we went to print. To inquire about their availability, or to inquire about other animals available for adoption please contact the Georgian Triangle Humane Society at 705-445-5204 or view their website at www.gths.ca.

10th Annual Gecko Bonspiel The always popular Gecko Bonspiel, organized by Men with Knives Catering in support of various charities, celebrated its 10th anniversary with a great day of curling and partying. Traditionally, many teams ‘dressed it up’ with some crazy themed outfits. The event was a tremendous success and no doubt Tin Roof Global “Clean Water For All” and Free Spirit Gardens, this year’s beneficiary of funds raised, is truly appreciative. What is the Environment Network? The Environment Network, a local NGO (non-profit, non-government organization) has been working in the Southern Georgian Bay area on environmental initiatives for over 20 years. The offices are located at 44 St. Marie St., Collingwood. The organization opened in 1993 as a storefront for the Collingwood Harbour Remedial Action Plan (RAP). The purpose of the Environment Network was to provide a central location for the various activities of the RAP. It also provided residents with an environmental resource library, but most of all it gave residents and visitors to the community a place to go with environmental questions and concerns. It still does all that, and more. Collingwood Harbour was de-listed as an Area of Concern in 1994, this was the first of literally hundreds of successful projects and programs for The Environment Network. Projects like park and playground creation and remediation in Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, The Blue Mountains and Creemore. Hundreds of kilometers of trails were built through projects and partnerships established by the organization. Over the years, dozens of gardens like the Xeriscape Garden (Sunset Point Park) and the Ecology Garden (Millennium Overlook Park) have been planted around the community. This public education work has led to municipal policies and bylaws such as the pesticide bylaw, tree bylaws, plant health policy and more. A favourite summer time experience for kids is always the Explorations Green Day Camp which follows the philosophy of Earth Education through hands on learning and empowerment. The camp was established in 1994. Each summer, Exploration Green engages 200 or more campers in environmental education cleverly disguised as ‘fun’. Georgian Life • April 2014
Other programs that are targeted towards young people include GIRLFRIENDS, The Crew, both after school programs for Grade 7 & 8 students. Active & Safe Routes to School is another program that has been operating for nearly 15 years in the community. This program encourages safe and active travel to and from school. H.E.L.P. (Heroes, Emerging Leaders and Professionals) is a training program for youth and sustainability. The Environment Network has participated in various habitat and naturalization projects focusing on restoration and rehabilitation of wildlife areas within and around Collingwood, especially aquatic-based habitats including Black Ash Creek in Collingwood and stream rehabilitation and tree planting in Barrie, and stream work in Wasaga Beach, and stream stabilization and erosion control for the Pretty River. These are just a few. The Environment Network also offers the Home Weatherization program, helping those with lower incomes improve the energy efficiency of their homes. The list of programs and projects is long and incredible, and the people involved in the organization are just as amazing. For more information, visit The Environment Network Shoppe where the products are all thoroughly researched to ensure they are as sustainable as possible. Check out the website for more on this outstanding organization! www.environmentnetwork.org.
