Organizer Sylvia Gallo and team were pleased to host Steve Elias and Jaime Bruno of SWRL Freestyle Soccer for an amazing evening of soccer skills and an opportunity to offer up some sage advice for young people. Their show Freeze Out Bullying is a live interactive performance featuring the two world class freestylers. They find creative ways of using their own experiences to emphasize the importance of taking control of your life, your decisions and goals for the future. The event, both entertaining and informative, served as a fundraiser for the Collingwood Canadians Soccer Team to assist their upcoming tournament trip to Italy. Net proceeds from the event were approximately $3k. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Got books?
Five musicians who met in music school were shaking up the house at the Marsh Street Centre with their 40’s and 50’s sounds. Touring this year includes more than a dozen events from one side of the continent to the other, so if you get a chance look for them. They represent the new age of blues and are one of the hottest blues rockers you will find. Photos/Story: Kimberley Merrifield
The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka and the Simcoe County Rotary clubs have partnered with the Simcoe County District School Board to provide used books and school supplies to children in Sierra Leone. They are asking members and organizations of the community to donate textbooks, children’s books and novels to help support this important cause. “Last year, with the help of the local Rotary clubs, the Simcoe County District School Board and community donations, we were able to load a container filled with school supplies including over 17,000 books, 240 student desks, 479 student chairs, 4 pianos, sports equipment, primary toys and more bound for South Africa,” said Jeanette Heywood, VP of Philanthropy & Brand Management, YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka. “Due to these generous donations, we were able to really make a difference. This year, we hope to do the same for our YMCA partners in Sierra Leone.” Since 2005 the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka and the YMCA of Sierra Leone have held a mutually beneficial partnership to support one another as global citizens – a principle of YMCA’s around the world. Our YMCA supports the YMCA of Sierra Leone in delivering youth job training programs, women/ youth leadership development, peace building/conflict resolution programs and HIV/AIDS education. In return, the YMCA of Sierra Leone provides global education and experiences for Canadian YMCA participants. The school board has offered to donate surplus equipment, including desks, chairs, shelves and books. The YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka and its partners are hoping to gather over 17,000 books to send overseas. Any type of book that might be found in an Ontario elementary school is welcome. Used computers in good working order are also welcome. Donations can be dropped off at the Barrie YMCA or the Collingwood YMCA until April 15th. For more information please call Rob Reid at 705-444-1500.

David Margesson on Wine - Take time for a white wine There are hundreds of white varietals and space will only permit us to cover a few. The classic white varietals include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. There are a few less well known whites that I predict will take off because of their excellent value and tantalizing flavours. These are: Gruner Veltliner, the classic grape from Austria, and Viognier.
Celebrating his first anniversary.
Viognier (pronounced VEE – ohn – yay) Its ancestral home is France. Viognier plantings have been increased substantially in California, Chile and Australia. The wine is high yellow in colour, with a unique perfume of apricot, peaches and blossom. There is an exotic honeysuckle, full-bodied taste and a wonderfully smooth texture plus a long finish. Try the Laroche Viognier de la Chevalier from France #377622 at $12.70
GERARD SERRE, AT CHARTWELL SINCE 2014. It’s been one year since Gerard decided to move out of his house and into one of our residences. Read the whole story and discover why he chose to write the next chapter at Chartwell.
Gruner Veltliner This is an exceptional white wine from Austria. Tasting Gruner blind, experts can often confuse this grape with a good Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc or even Riesling. The difference is a subtle but unmistakable finish and a surge of white pepper. I predict that Gruner Veltliner will become a favourite with many. Try the Wachau Durstein Feders #375089 at $15.10
CHARTWELL.COM
Chardonnay Chardonnay has been generally made with an abundance of big oaky flavours. Today, most Chardonnays are produced with little or no oak flavour at all. Our wine club’s last tasting of white wines voted a lightly oaked Californian Chardonnay as one of the overall favourites. The ancestral home of Chardonnay is Burgundy where some of the most prized and sought after Chardonnay’s are from. Some of the world’s greatest white wines are Chardonnay as they exhibit a wide range of flavours that are matched by smooth textures and full body. Chardonnay is grown all over the world and it responds to a far wider range of climates than most white varieties. This results in wonderful wines that can be very diverse depending on the country and the winemaker. Try some of the unoaked or more lightly oaked Chardonnays starting at $10.00. Sauvignon Blanc Sauvignon Blanc has it’s ancestral home in Bordeaux France. Also called Sancerre, Pouilly-Fume and Fume-Blanc. It’s immediate characteristic is a piercing aroma with flavours of grassy, green fruit, gooseberries etc. Today, New Zealand produces some of the greatest Sauvignon Blanc that are very refreshing, pure and zesty. This opposite of Chardonnay is taut & herbal with exciting crispness and flavours of green tea, herbs, straw, grass and has great intensity. Try some Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand, Canada, U.S.A., Chile, South Africa and the Loire Valley in France. Try the Las Mulas Reserve Organic from Chile # 272609 at $12.95. Riesling Riesling is making a comeback and is produced in virtually every country that produces white wines. It is arguably the world’s most undervalued wine and many experts claim it to be the finest white grape variety in the world. Rieslings range from bone dry to very sweet. In the 1960’s and 70’s we were inundated with sweet syrupy yucky cheap Rieslings. Today I feel Riesling is the most complex and diverse white wine. Riesling is one of the few wines that can be matched to almost any food. It has the backbone to hold up to hearty meats dishes, etc. Riesling is also one of the more age worthy of wines. Riesling is noted for its powerful sharp aromas that are flowery, steely, honeyed, and it takes on the mineral elements conveyed by the particular vineyard site. It is one of the most enjoyable of all whites, especially in the summer where its refined structure is complemented by delicacy and lightness with bursting ripe fruit flavours. Try some of the dryer examples from Germany, Alsace, Austria, Canada and Australia. Rieslings are some of the best values in white wine & nothing is more delightful than to sip a dry crisp chilled Riesling on a hot day. Dry Riesling is my favourite white wine. Try the Cave Springs or Henry of Pelham Reserve Rieslings from the Niagara Region and you may be delightfully surprised.

PROFESSIONALS HERE TO HELP YOU Linda Kinsey, CHt, Master Hypnotist Advanced Hypnosis Center of Collingwood
Dr. John L. Chiasson Dentistry
Hypnosis can be a powerful life-changing tool. The human mind functions on at least two levels of awareness; the conscious and the sub-conscious. These two levels of awareness are complimentary and operate simultaneously. The conscious, analytical mind acts as a filter for incoming information. The sub-conscious mind has limited reasoning capabilities; it believes what it is told and proceeds to act upon this information as though it were true. During hypnosis, the conscious mind’s filtering chatter is temporarily rendered inactive, and the client’s desired suggestions are given directly to the sub-conscious. This bypasses the conscious mind’s critical faculty (its ability to accept or reject information) and registers directly upon the sub-conscious mind as “the truth”. Believing the concept or idea, the subconscious mind then reacts automatically in thought and action to manifest your desires. Hypnosis can be used in many facets of life, and is particularly effective for the following: behaviour modification, weight reduction, smoking cessation, stress reduction, etc. Hypnosis utilizes the process of quieting the mind, then implanting positive suggestions into the subconscious mind during this “trance” state. The combination of relaxation and suggestion is what makes hypnosis such a powerful tool. By calming the mind, then instilling positive suggestions, you can improve your performance, control addictions, decrease stress, eliminate unwanted habits or behaviours, and generally improve the quality of your life, safely and effectively.

Armadale - a reminder of Collingwood’s rich and fascinating past Standing at 275 Third Street is one of the last Collingwood mansions and still a residential home. Built in 1890 it is a majestic house designed in the Romanesque Revival style by local architect Fred T. Hodgson for Herbert Young Telfer and his wife Elizabeth. It boasts a Queen Anne style roof and a chateau-like tower along with a large variety of window styles. The mansion showed the Telfers’ status in society as Herbert and his brother Frank took over their father Hall Telfer’s successful biscuit business in 1876. The house was named “Armadale” after Hall’s birthplace in Scotland. It held grand occasions like Governor General Duke of Devonshire’s dinner and garden reception on his visit to Collingwood in 1918.

Armadale passed to Herbert’s daughter Clara in 1946, and in 1951 Gowan’s House purchased the property as a girls’ residence for the Gowan’s House for Missionary Children. In 1965, Fritz and Terry Schuller bought Armadale, and through their persistent efforts the house was restored to its original splendor. In 2008 their youngest daughter Heidi and her family returned to Collingwood, purchased Armadale and hired local design and build firm Porter Skelton to renovate and update the home, taking special care to preserve its beauty and history. The home now boasts a state of the art kitchen, heated floors, functional and spacious mudroom, updated plumbing and electrical in addition to five original fireplaces, stunning stain glass doors and original woodwork of mahogany, cherry and oak. Beautiful gardens were expanded throughout the property and the pool, deck and patio were fully landscaped. 21st Annual Magic of Children in the Arts The Magic of Children in the Arts was founded in 1994 by local artist Lory MacDonald. With the help of parents and volunteers, it evolved into an annual event at the Collingwood Public Library. Their mission is to inspire and encourage children to create, exhibit and celebrate art. The result is a spectacular display of over 400 artworks created by children from the community. Congratulations to Lory, the wonderful volunteers, and of course those talented young artists for 21 years of amazingly creative art! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography
Giving is easy...
My name is Pamela Quirk My mom worked in the RNA program at Collingwood General and Marine Hospital for 10 years so it was a part of my life from childhood. When my father was admitted to the hospital 4 years ago with a heart attack; it was a life and death situation for him. Collingwood General and Marine Hospital provided excellent care and he was given his life back. It was my catalyst to support an organization that meant so much to me. Giving was so easy – I consulted with an insurance specialist, took out a policy that cost me less than my annual typical donation. Over ten years, I will have this policy paid off and it hasn’t impacted my life at all. However, the financial implications to the Hospital are tremendous and will result in a significantly higher gift. Since my parents as well as brother and his family still live in Collingwood and I enjoy coming up here, I wanted to keep the support in this community. I am also very confident in the Foundation’s use of my money. They are excellent stewards and custodians of my support. Please join me in supporting the great work at the Hospital – giving is easy – just call 705-444-8645 or email kerrj@cgmh.on.ca to get started. It affects us all, and your donation could make a difference in life or death.
Thank you Collingwood General and Marine Hospital Foundation www.cgmf.com

Go green with shutters Aside from being praised for their elegant look, California and Plantation shutters are also recognized as being a “green” window covering. Choosing shutters can actually lead to decreased energy costs, making them the clear choice for eco-conscious homeowners.
Start your day right with these amazing
APRIL BREAKFAST SPECIALS Specials below are available April 1-30 from 7am-11am
Compared to drapery treatments, curtains and blinds, shutters last for an extremely long time. While the warranty covers many years, they have been known to last a lifetime with proper care. Once installed, these green window treatments add value and curb appeal to any home, and are rarely removed. In an era where many consumers are looking for ways to “go green” and reduce their carbon footprint, energy efficient shutters are a sound window covering option. Because shutters allow the homeowner to control sunlight and airflow, air conditioning and heating temperatures may be moderated, thus reducing usage and costs when compared to home with other window coverings. As a green window covering option, California and Plantation shutters act as insulation, keeping the home cool in the summer and warm air inside in the winter. During more temperate weather, many homeowners might not need to use their heating/cooling units as much, as they’re able to keep themselves comfortable by adjusting their shutters. Merging Light Landscape painter Peter Taylor held his Opening Reception at Curiosity House Books and Art Gallery in Creemore. Taylor’s current collection of paintings which feature open skies and surreal reflections and fluxes of light, was inspired from his long runs in the Dunedin countryside. Peter said there are parallels between running and painting - both allow you to enter ‘the zone’. His “Merging Light” exhibit will continue until April 8th. Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography

Sledge Hockey now in Simcoe County The Simcoe County Sliders are a newly established recreational Sledge Hockey Team formed by the Simcoe County Sliders Parents Council. Their mission is to expand and expose the sport of Sledge Hockey for young athletes with and without physical disabilities throughout the Simcoe County Area. The Team Executive is currently made up of 7 committed parent volunteers, and is guided and supported by various agencies in the Simcoe County district. The Simcoe County Sliders played a full home and away season in the 2014/2015 hockey season including traveling to Buffalo, NY to play in the first round of the playoffs of the Ontario Sledge Hockey Association. They concluded their season with a 0-2 record, but this did not diminish the enthusiasm of the players. They were disappointed to see the season come to an end on March 29th but ended on a high note with a pizza party and participant trophy presentation. It was a great first season for the team and they are already planning for next year. “Thank you again to every organization, business and members of the public who supported us, as well as local/provincial government and the Simcoe County Sliders executive for making this team a reality. If anyone would like more information or to volunteer or help support the team please contact the team at simcoecountysliders@gmail.com and visit the website www.simcoecountysliders.ca for our schedule and come out to support our team”. Southern Georgian Bay Shines The Southern Georgian Bay region was well represented at the recent Festival and Events Ontario 2015 Awards ‘Let the Inspiration Flow’ in Niagara Falls. Collingwood, Clearview and Blue Mountain were all nominated for awards... and we went 3 for 3 bringing home the hardware! Collingwood was awarded 2015 Municipality of the Year (for population under 50,000) and also received an award for the Collingwood Elvis Festival. Blue Mountains was the recipient of two awards as the perennial favourite Apple Pie Trail culinary event took the honours for Best Community Outreach with the Guitar Trail at Blue being honoured for Best New Event with cost under $100k. Clearview Township was recognized with the award for Best New Festival with their Small Halls Festival held last fall. All in all a great honour for our communities and a wonderful reason to celebration the successes of our regional festivals and events at a provincial level! Kudos to all, well deserved and well done! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography
PRP Injections becoming increasingly popular Many individuals have experienced injuries to muscles and tendons and have attended therapy to assist in their recovery. Even famous athletes, including Tiger Woods and tennis star Rafael Nadal, have suffered with chronic tendon injuries. These types of conditions have typically been treated with medications, physical therapy, chiropractic care, therapeutic exercise or even surgery. Unfortunately, tendons have a poor blood supply – this is the reason why some tendon injuries take so long to heal. Over the past several years, a treatment known as Platelet-Rich Plasma injection (PRP injection) has become increasingly common in sports medicine clinics. Platelets are found in our blood – while they are best known for their importance in clotting blood, platelets also contain proteins which are crucial in the healing of injuries. PRP injections involve: • taking a specific amount of blood from a patient • extracting the platelets i.e. the portion that helps to stimulate healing of damaged tissue • injecting the platelets into the injured area under the guidance of diagnostic ultrasound According to the research studies currently reported, PRP is most effective in the treatment of chronic tendon injuries, especially tennis elbow, a very common injury of the tendons on the outside of the elbow. PRP is also commonly used to treat golfer’s elbow, knee tendon injuries, Achilles tendon pain and plantar fascia injuries. Depending on the area injected and the severity and chronicity of the problem one or two subsequent injections may be necessary. Following successful PRP treatments, a good program of physical rehabilitation is required to fully rehabilitate the body back to full functional capacity. If you have any questions please contact Dr. Olivia Cheng, Orthopaedic Surgeon, at the Orthopaedic Sport Institute for timely consultation. Diagnostic ultrasound is utilized for PRP injections to ensure that PRP is delivered directly to the diseased tissue. For further information on managing your injury, please contact the Orthopaedic Sport Institute at (705) 467-0701 or info@ortho-sport.ca and ask for a consultation with one of our friendly healthcare professionals. Fifty Shades of Clutter
by Rachel May
Our mothers’ idea of spring-cleaning was scrubbing walls and floors, before starting gardening in May. The “stuff” in their houses was minimal compared to today’s standards. We MUST rethink our space on a regular basis, not only in the spring. The kitchen is a good place to start. The kitchen is still the “heart” of the home, although in the last decade it has exploded with media gadgets. No wonder the average person finds it so trying to organize this high traffic multi function room. Who would have foreseen the NEED for space for a computer, laptop, TV… recharging stations for a half-dozen or more family cell phones. No wonder the kitchen is one of the most popular “target” rooms for people who retain the expert services of a Professional Organizer. Having activity zones applies for all the rooms in your house:
A. Primary Activity:
• Meal eating: Which meals? By how many family members? • How is food prepared most often: Microwave? Oven/stovetop (always/only weekends?) Mostly take-out meals? Gourmet, multi-stage food prep? • Social Area: Where dinner guests enjoy helping with food prep while enjoying a glass of wine with you.
B. Secondary Activity: • Computer station/family deskwork for bill paying, internet or email use. • Reading nook • Kids homework station • Morning coffee corner
Sorting And Shedding: • Apply the one year or one season stipulation: If it spells Christmas, such as napkins or turkey roaster and Easter is here, get it out of the kitchen. The same applies for once-in-a -lifetime used items. • If it smells, it goes. Spices have expiry dates, ditch them if they no longer smell as they should. Canned goods, and all food items are the same. • Limit amount of storage containers, getting rid of orphaned pieces like lids. Drawers or storage bins work best to keep these together. • Use same size air-tight food containers in the pantry to save space. Square versus round saves space. • Magnetic Appeal: Limit the fridge door magnets, post–it notes, kids art & knickknacks to one or two pieces (rotate them to spotlight each budding Picasso’s individual efforts). • Consider installing a small board inside a cupboard door to keep your shopping list & activity calendar. • Empty the fridge and clean out shelves and drawers before putting in new groceries. Cleaning out one cupboard or drawer per day while listening to a favourite song would only steal 10 minutes out of your day, and reduce the need for a bigger job down the road. Learning about Sustainability at Breakfast at the Beach Guest speaker Michele Rich, Executive Director of the Environment Network, provided the attendees with an understanding of what it really means to be sustainable in business and in our personal lives. More importantly - how to make good business decisions by taking sustainability impacts into account fully and consistently on a daily basis. Of greatest interest to the business community is the financial benefits of operating a sustainable business. The Environment Network is a nonprofit non-government organization working with communities, the public, and all levels of government to ensure a healthy and sustainable environment. Michele started out in the radio broadcasting industry and quickly moved into motion picture television post production in Toronto. In 1992 she moved to the Collingwood area to be with her husband Mark. Shortly after, Michele started a six month contract to plan a conference for the Environment Network which evolved into an incredible career. Over the years of working with the Environment Network, Michele has encouraged environmental improvement through community action with projects such as EcoEnergy, Well Aware, Active and Safe Routes to School, habitat creation and restoration, stream rehabilitation, pesticide reduction, and of course alternative & active transportation through the creation and promotion of trails. Michele returned to school to study in detail a Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development. Shortly after completing the Masters course, Michele realized that in order to take this work to a deeper more meaningful level, she had to learn more about people and how they think, and returned to school again to study psychotherapy. these local businesses can help! Go green to increase energyefficiency and to save money
Spring Flowers
(NC) Spring is the time of year when homeowners look to refresh, renew and revitalize their homes. So as Mother Nature goes green, did you know that there are plenty of ways to incorporate cost-saving green solutions into your home, as well? Several tips to increase energy-efficiency include: 1. Take control of heating and cooling. As temperatures warm, turn down the heat and delay the urge to turn on the air conditioner for as long as possible. Instead, throw open your windows to cool your space and help improve indoor air quality, after a long season of being sealed up tight. A programmable thermostat can also ensure you limit energy use when you’re not home. 2. Top up your attic insulation. Inadequate insulation in the attic is one of the greatest sources of energy loss in a home. Conversely, adding insulation to your attics is one of the most cost-effective ways to bolster the energy-efficiency of a home. Even if you are a totally unseasoned DIYer, going green is simple with easy-toinstall insulation products like Roxul Comfortbatt. This type of stone wool product is earthfriendly and made from abundant natural raw materials, with a recycled content that can be as high as 40 per cent. Aim for an R-value of at least R50 or roughly a depth of 16 inches. For more information and handy tips, visit www.diywithroxul.com. 3. Caulk cracks and crevices around your home. These can be a source of air leaks, which ultimately are a draw on energy consumption.
CROCUS Crocus is believed by many as the first spring flower. There are about 80 different crocus species and botanically they belong to the iris family.

4. Landscape your home for energy efficiency. Did you know that tall, deciduous trees planted near your home can significantly reduce the amount of solar energy passing through windows and beating down on your roof? In fact, the right amount of shade in the right places can reduce cooling bills by 10 to 50 per cent.
HYACINTH This spectacular plant is highly-appraised for its strong fragrance. Coming in a vast array of colors, it makes the perfect bedding, bordering and cut plants.
Going green for energy-efficiency is easier than you think, and of course, the most enticing benefit is that it can save you a lot of green, too. www.newscanada.com Georgian Life • April 2015

Prepare to be WOW’ed
Getting married? Add some fun & excitement to your wedding reception
Late in 2013, members of the Lions Clubs of Tiny Township and Wasaga Beach met and conceived a great plan. Tiny Township native Brent Handy had the vision to see a quality air show over Georgian Bay off Wasaga Beach.
with a photobooth! The Wasaga Beach Lions Club was seen to have the local knowledge and the ability to be of great help in bringing the vision to reality. The mission became very simple: Produce a World Class Community-based Airshow benefiting Charitable Organizations and the local Wasaga Beach and Georgian Bay business communities. After many informal meetings, both Lions Clubs agreed that a committee should be formed, and seed money from each club was released to move forward with the project. Utilizing all volunteers and service groups from the community and great support from the Town of Wasaga Beach, the newly minted “Wings over Wasaga (WOW)” team plans to execute an event that will entertain 40,000 to 50,000 spectators, a large number of whom will be from outside the local area.
Packages starting at only $495! INCLUDED: unlimited prints on site • on-site attendant • open air photo tower all photos on usb key - for your use • custom graphic designed template tons of props • colour or black and white prints • delivery, set up & take down in the georgian triangle area & barrie area
ADDITIONAL OPTIONS: enclosed booth • pipe & drape backdrop • guestbook • custom props travel outside georgian triangle area & barrie area
The Airshow will be July 3-5 and, for the first time since 1934, Wasaga Beach will be the place to be to watch it. Top military and civilian performers will thrill the crowds and bring a new level of excitement to Wasaga Beach. The goal is to produce an event that will be family oriented, educational, and entertaining for the whole family. Visit the website wingsoverwasaga.com for an exciting presentation of all the information you need to prepare for the event. Follow the links to learn about the performers, including the Canadian Snowbirds and the CF18 Hornet Demonstration Team, ticket availability and pricing, sponsorship opportunities and more. Lab results tell all about your oil Olive oil grading is a marketing tool used by producers. The terms can be confusing and intentionally misleading. Canada is not a member of the International Olive Oil Council so terms such as “extra virgin” may be used without legal restriction. Almost all supermarket and gourmet food brands are labeled Extra Virgin when in fact they are not. Laboratory results are the only tell-all. Extra-Virgin Olive Oil comes from virgin oil production only, contains no more than 0.8% acidity, and is judged to have a superior taste. Extra Virgin olive oil accounts for less than 10% of oil in many producing countries. Virgin Olive Oil is produced by the use of physical means and no chemical treatments, has an acidity less than 2%, and is judged to have a good taste. Pure Olive Oil. Oils labeled as Pure Olive Oil or Olive Oil are usually a blend of refined and virgin production oil. Over 50% of the oil produced in the Mediterranean area is of such poor quality that it must be refined to produce an edible product. No solvents are used to extract the oil but it has been refined with the use of charcoal and other chemical and physical filters
Up to 99% OFF First Month
Refined Olive Oil is the olive oil obtained from virgin olive oils by refining methods. This is obtained by refining virgin olive oils which have a high acidity level and/or organoleptic defects.
Hwy 26 & Pretty River Pkwy 151 MacDonald Road Collingwood, ON L9Y 4J1
Olive-Pomace oil is extracted from the pomace using chemical solvents, mostly hexane, and by heat and sometimes blended with some virgin production oil. Olive-pomace oil is rarely sold at retail but is used for certain kinds of cooking in restaurants.

Lampante oil is not suitable as food because it is made usually from olives that are spoiled or insect infested. The term lampante comes from olive oil’s longstanding use in oil-burning lamps. When you visit Collingwood Olive Oil Co. you always receive a transparent breakdown of the lab results from the oils currently in their tanks and can with full confidence know that you are purchasing fresh harvest extra virgin olive oils. Polar Plunge Trophy goes to Wasaga Mayor The Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach was proud to present Mayor Brian Smith with the Polar Plunge Trophy for 2015. Brian and his wife Joanne raised the highest individual amount, nearly $1700, for the Third Annual Polar Plunge. The Wasaga Beach Ministerial Food Bank is their charity of choice to receive these designated funds. The 23 Plungers braved -41 C weather to jump into icy waters to raise close to $10,000 in all. The Polar Bear Plunge is an event that has raised almost $20,000 in three years and keeps growing! All of the funds raised have remained in Wasaga Beach and will be presented to well-deserved community charities by The Wasaga Beach Rotary Club. Submitted by: Bryan Davies | Photo: Kareem Thomas

Help needed to preserve local landmark The Facebook page “Help Save the Nottawasaga Lighthouse” was created by Krista King in 2012 to help bring awareness and ultimately restore one of the top ten endangered heritage buildings in Canada.

“Our beautiful Nottawasaga Light house has fallen into a state of despair, and we need your help. This is a group page designed to raise awareness, possibly fundraise, and most of all highlight the importance of the preservation of this historical landmark.” “The Nottawasaga Island Lighthouse began to operate just outside of Collingwood harbour on November 30, 1858. The local name for the Island Postcard from the beginning of is Clark Island. This local landmark was considered the Twentieth Century a valuable part of Collingwood’s identity then, and it still is. Without the “Lighthouse” Nottawasaga Island would only be noteworthy for being the only true island on southern Georgian Bay (Nottawasaga Bay) among a series of shoals which, depending on the water levels, may or may not be above water. It wouldn’t be the same view looking out over the Bay without it, just as removing the mountains as a backdrop to Collingwood would change our identity completely. The mountains aren’t going anywhere. Let’s hope Nottawasaga Lighthouse Window display in Collingwood Town Hall will receive the support it needs, so our identity remains intact”.
As of March 11, 2015 The Nottawasaga Lighthouse Preservation Society is now incorporated, and the next step is to achieve charitable status! For more information please contact Krista King at (705-444-6658) or Robert Square at (705-445-9494) or join the group on facebook for updates.

5 Signs Your Shingle Roof Needs Replacing After the snow melts are you left wondering if your shingle roof needs servicing? Check for any of these five warning signs… Curling or clawing shingles are a sign of both an aging roof system and excessive heat. Curled or clawing shingles are highly susceptible to wind uplift and ice damage. Shingles will become rigid and can break easily and lose tab edges. Missing granules and bare spots due to poorly placed downspouts, lack of eavestrough, or poorly designed valley drainage on a second storey can cause a waterfall effect that washes away granules over time. Aging of a roof system or physical damage can also cause bare spots and a loss of granules. When the protective granules of a shingle are lost the shingle begins to harden from heat and sun exposure. Granule loss on a roof system will accelerate aging and shingle decay and can become an entry point for water. Broken and missing singles greatly weaken a roof system’s ability to shed water and can be an entry point of water. Two common causes of damaged shingles are excessive wind and physical damage. Buckling shingles are visible waved distortions that usually run vertically up a roof slope. Buckled shingles are highly susceptible to wind and ice damage and can be torn off easily. Overall roof age and wet or poorly installed underlayment are common causes of buckling shingles. Damaged flashings - flashings located around skylights, valleys, eaves, rakes, wall details, stacks, and chimneys are all subject to separation, lifting, and dried out caulking. The flashing details can lift and separate due to general expansion and contraction. Expansion and contraction will cause fasteners to become loose and the bottom-flashing flange to lift thus allowing water to enter.

If you notice any of the signs noted above you may need to have your roof repaired or replaced by a certified roofing contractor. A roof leak is not always apparent immediately on the inside of a home; it can damage insulation and deck sheathing causing replacement costs to grow.
