Collingwood celebrates Canada’s birthday The community gathered downtown in front of the Federal building to join in the singing of our national anthem, receive greetings from members of various levels of government, take part in a very moving Canadian Citizen Reaffirmation ceremony. If even for a moment, we set aside our economic struggles, hardships, political differences and woes and were thankful for all the blessings and freedoms we enjoy in this great country... and then of course we dig in to that awesome Canada Day cake! Happy Birthday Canada from Collingwood … and thanks! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

PROFESSIONALS HERE TO HELP YOU Ease in Motion Yoga - Heidi Rumball
Nature League Green & Healthy Living Festival
Moving Away From Pain and Strain Heidi Rumball, owner of Ease In Motion Yoga, believes many people are suffering needlessly and are putting their favourite activities on hold. Working with clients privately and in classes, she helps people get out of pain, manage chronic and autoimmune conditions and supports people through treatment in her work as a therapeutic yoga teacher for teens and adults. In a private, group or workshop with Heidi you will: move in a pain and tension free range of motion, connect to your natural breath, calm your nervous system, build awareness of the “whispers” that precede your strain/pain/stress cycle, nurture what is working well and efficient in your body, calm and release over-engaged areas/muscles that are working too hard. This fall Heidi is launching her newest project that is close to her heart, The Stressed Teens Program. In this 8-week program students learn simple and effective techniques to manage stress and help them deal with problems and difficult feelings in high school and beyond. Heidi is a former elementary school teacher, certified yoga instructor and has trained extensively in therapeutic yoga, teen and kids yoga and mindfulness. She teaches private yoga therapy and a variety of yoga classes. Young blues musicians sought for Junior Jam Do you know any young people aged eight to 18 who would love to perfom the blues on the Main Stage at Stonebridge Wasaga Beach Blues? Mark ‘Bird’ Stafford’s Junior Jam returns on Sunday Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. and he is now seeking junior jammers who play the blues. During last year’s Junior Jam, the young people who participated were front and centre on stage, singing, playing harmonica, guitar, bass, banjo, and piano: they arranged the songs on the fly. James Caston performed at the 2014 Junior Jam: “James plays banjo bluegrass and Mark was smart enough to lend him his lead guitarist and did they do a number. This was a great experience for a young lad venturing into the world of music and playing to crowds,” says Jim Coleman, James’ grandfather. Stafford is passionate about ensuring the next generation develops an appreciation for the blues. His Junior Jams engage and educate young people in an improvisational setting, backed by his five-piece band. Stafford, who also does Blues in the Schools, has been running the Junior Jam for 10 years.

“Mark Stafford is more than a blues entertainer. He is a man of vision and really cares about helping the youth of today with their dreams,” Coleman added. When these young people finish playing, they have a sense of confidence they, and the audience appreciate. “Throughout the years of performing in the Junior Jam I have gained so much positive experience with performing live and with a band,” says Mackenzie Boys-Eddy who participated in 2013. He started performing in the Junior Jam at the Southside Shuffle with Mark Stafford when he was eight. All of the stage equipment is provided: all participants need to do is bring their ‘axe’ and talent and “we’ll look after the rest. We get guitar players, singers, piano players, drummers and more, it’s a great afternoon of entertainment for the whole family and the festival,” Stafford said. To sign up, contact Mark “Bird” Stafford: birdstafford@sympatico.ca. For more information, visit www.markbirdstafford.com. Stonebridge Wasaga Beach Blues, a free music festival Sept. 18 to 20 at the Stonebridge Town Centre in Wasaga Beach, will feature an array of musicians, many of them award-winning. David Margesson on Wine Red Wines Continued….. This article follows my February 2015 article “Red Wine”. We will now explore four more interesting red varietals. I encourage you to try them all. There is the possibility that you may discover your new House Wine. Sangiovese Seldom will you see the name Sangiovese on a wine bottle although it is the great grape used for the production of Italian Chiantis including the great Brunello di Montalcino. Sangiovese is used in the wonderful Super Tuscans which are some of the finest wines in the world. Cabernet Franc This fine wine is a valuable component of many blends and particularly in Bordeaux as it ripens earlier and tolerates cool weather better than Cabernet Sauvignon. This grape has enjoyed good success in South West France and the Friuli region of Italy. The area where it really shines is in the central part of the Loire Valley in France where it produces wonderful, elegant and fruity reds such as Bourgueil and Chinon. Baco Noir This wine is a result of crossing Folle Blanche with a variety of other French Wines in 1894. Niagara is where it really thrives and results in some wonderful reds. Two great buys are Henry of Pelham Baco Noir Reserve #461699 at $24.95 and a $15.95 Baco Noir from Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery in Niagara. Tempranillo In Spain this is the king of the reds also called Tinto Fino and Cencibel. Tempranillo is matured longer than wines from almost every country. Their “reserva” or “gran reserva” wines are stored for several years in casks and bottles before released. These wines can be magnificent and represent a good quality/value relationship. Note: Many of the great wines of Niagara are only available through the wineries. All of them offer shipping.
RETIREMENT SALE
At our recent Winetasters of Collingwood tasting “The Wanted Zin Zinfandel” from Puglia, Italy #416487 at $13.95 was voted #1 of the evening rated against two fine Bordeaux reds at $140.00 and $85.00.

The other two clubs did this as well and collectively they raised over $2000 for the Sick Kids Foundation. They also ran Warrior Dash as Sick Kids Warriors the next day!

Six hour relay bike for a great cause The 3rd Annual 6 Hours of Gibraltar Relay Race was a great success! Thank you to everyone who came out and joined us! The Race to Empower women and children had an amazing turn out this year with spectacular weather. 100% of the over $100,000 raised was donated to My Friend’s House, a safe haven for abused women and children. It was fantastic to see riders of all abilities and ages come together for such an important cause in our region. Photos: mycollingwood.ca

Energy-Efficiency with Ceiling Fans Ceiling fans are an important part of creating the perfect home decor. In the last 10 years ceiling fans have become more technologically advanced, providing cooling in the summer months and warming in the winter months to save you on your energy bill drastically. The use of indoor ceiling fans can reduce prices on your energy costs up to 40% in the summer and 10% in the winter, using only as much as energy as a 100 watt light bulb. During the summer ceiling fans create a “cooling effect” lowering temperatures as much as 7 degrees and recirculating the heat in the winter to the living area. Ceiling Fans are being used now not only in the main rooms in your home but also in kitchens and bathrooms where dampness may be an issue. Stop by to check out our large selection of ceiling fans on sale! Submitted by Wasaga Beach Decorating. “With age comes wisdom”. “If I only knew then what I know now”. “The Golden Years”. There certainly are enough euphemisms that imply aging is a wonderful and fulfilling experience. However, many are now coming to realize that as more time passes, we tend to lose more of what we truly enjoy. Aging comes with its fair share of physical changes that can negatively impact our strength, endurance, balance and overall level of wellness and independence. Sarcopenia occurs in all individuals – it is a loss of muscle mass with aging that typically begins in your 30’s. This process is influenced by inactivity, hormone levels (reduction in levels of testosterone, growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor), inadequate nutrition and an inability of the body to synthesize protein. Sarcopenia tends to accelerate between the ages of 65 and 80. While inactivity can lead to 3-5% loss of muscle mass per decade after the age of 30, improving the volume and intensity of your activity can help to minimize that loss. How can you specifically combat this process? Exercise. Exercise. Exercise. Resistance training has been reported to positively influence the neuromuscular system, hormone concentrations, and protein synthesis rate. Research has shown that a program of progressive resistance training exercises can increase protein synthesis rates in older adults in as little as two weeks. The good news is muscle mass can increase at any age in response to exercise. In an important study of weight lifting and older adults conducted with residents of a nursing home in Boston (average age 87), subjects lifted weights with their legs three times a week for 10 weeks. At the end of the study, there was an increase in thigh mass of 2.7%, walking speed increased 12%, and leg strength increased 113%! Submitted by: Darryl Novotny, BScPT Registered Physiotherapist

No hot pets this summer! The Georgian Triangle Humane Society (GTHS) is currently running the award-winning “No Hot Pets” (www. nohotpets.ca) campaign, created by the Ontario SPCA, in an effort to remind pet owners of the dangers of leaving pets unattended in a vehicle during the hot summer months. Parked cars can quickly reach deadly temperatures, even on relatively mild days with the car parked in the shade and the windows slightly open. Community members are asked to share the message about the dangers of leaving pets in vehicles, online using #nohotpets. In addition, pet owners are asked to visit www.nohotpets.ca and pledge to not leave their pets in their vehicles. Those who pledge will receive a free No Hot Pets window decal for their vehicles (while supplies last). “Leaving your pet unattended in a vehicle is one of the most irresponsible things an owner can do. Please leave your pet at home and if you must take your pet make sure that someone is with it at all times,” says Calla Lyon, manager of marketing, communications and resource development at GTHS. “During the hot summer months, let’s keep everyone safe and cool.” FACTS - Dogs have a limited ability to sweat; even a short time in a hot environment can be life-threatening. A dog’s normal body temperature is about 39°C and a temperature of 41°C can be withstood only for a very short time before irreparable brain damage or even death can occur. TREATMENT - If heat stroke is suspected (excessive panting and drooling, listlessness or unconsciousness) prompt veterinary medical attention is vital. In the meantime, wet the fur immediately with lukewarm to cool water, not cold water. Bring the pet into the shade and offer drinking water. If you observe an animal suffering in the heat, please call your local OPP station.

Helping achieve the dream of home ownership
Award winning combinations!
Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay and its volunteers started the Blitz Build of a semi-detached home in Collingwood to house two local families. The Not-for-Profit group works in partnership with low income working families in need, businesses, individual donors and volunteers to build basic, affordable housing. Habitat partners with the families, helping them to achieve the dream of home ownership through a HAND UP, NOT A HAND OUT. Each family must contribute “sweat equity” by working alongside the volunteer builders. Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography
Collingwood Olive Oil Co. wins 2015 Collingwood Chamber of Commerce Small Business Owners of the Year Award and the Innovative Business Award! When partners Alex Yuen and Cheryl McMenemy launched Collingwood Olive Oil in 2014 on Ste. Marie Street, you could say it was like mixing high-quality olive oil with the perfect balsamic vinegar. Alex, who worked in his family’s restaurant business for 25 years, both in the kitchen and as front-of-the-house manager, is pure Collingwood through and through. Born and raised here, Alex is well known for his dedication to the community as well as his astute business acumen. Cheryl adds her marketing expertise to Alex’s solid community roots. With decades of experience working for large media organizations, a formal education in accounting and a driven desire to succeed, Cheryl’s fearless approach to business makes her an exceptional partner. Collingwood Olive Oil was built on a foundation of stellar customer service, a high level of customer engagement, food education, networking, marketing strength, and sound business principles. Together, Alex and Cheryl have created an exciting and unique retail environment with an incomparable product line. Their success has poured out beyond the community as the story of Collingwood Olive Oil has even appeared in the Financial Post, where Alex was able to promote Collingwood as a great place in Ontario to open a small independent business. What an amazing first year! Alex & Cheryl are very appreciative that their hard work is being recognized in the form of business awards!
Cilantro Lime Dressing I love Lime and Cilantro. Finding this recipes is great because it’s not only awesome as a dressing, it’s also fantastic as a marinade! Making chicken and white fish taste delicious! This is a bit more complex then our normal salad dressing (olive oil and balsamic = awesomest salad dressing ever!), but it’s most definetly worth it as Cilantro is popping up and looking delicious. Ingredients 1 jalapeno pepper seeded and coarsely chopped t1 clove of garlic 3/4 tsp of minced fresh ginger 1 TBSP of fresh lime juice 1/3 cup of honey 2 tsp of traditional balsamic 1/2 tsp of salt 1/4 cup of packed cilantro leaves 1/2 cup of lime Olive oil Instructions Place the jalapeno pepper, garlic clove, and ginger into a food processor or blender; pulse until the jalapeno and garlic are finely chopped. Pour in the lime juice, honey, balsamic vinegar, and salt, add the cilantro leaves; pulse a few times to blend. Turn the food processor or blender on, and slowly drizzle in the olive oil until incorporated into the dressing. Season to taste with salt before serving. Collingwood Olive Oil Co. 42 Ste. The sky was the limit The Wasaga Beach Kitefest took place in late June on the shores of Wasaga Beach. Kite Festivals are enjoyed by millions of people every year all around the world. What an incredible experience hanging out with all types of people, young and old, sharing a common passion. People were delighted with the different kites flown at the event. A crowd pleaser was the “Canadian Heroes” tribute to the men and women in uniform. Both days started with overcast skies but as the day progressed the sun was shining and winds picked up enough to fly some of the larger kites. Photos/Story: Enrique Miranda
A plane designed for hard work This Lysander at the Edenvale Airport was flown by a pilot that died just a few years ago in 2010. Designed as an army co-operation aircraft, the Lysander equipped six RAF squadrons in France for artillery spotting, reconnaissance and other communications tasks during the first year of the war. This role would largely disappear with the fall of France, but the Lysander would go on to become a remarkable multi-role aircraft. Many Lysanders were converted to target tugs helping to train anti-aircraft gunners in Britain. Others, fitted with air-droppable life rafts, formed the RAF’s first air/sea rescue squadrons. Working with fast motor launches to within a mile of the enemy’s coastline, Lysanders helped rescue hundreds of downed airmen. Today, they are largely remembered for a dangerous clandestine role they filled. Using their superb short take-off and landing (STOL) capabilities, unarmed Lysanders were operated in and out of unprepared fields, pastures, and forest clearings in the dark of night to pick-up secret agents and saboteurs from occupied-Europe. Selected to equip the RCAF’s army co-operation squadrons in 1938, 225 Lysanders were built under license by National Steel Car at Malton, just west of Toronto. Like their British cousins, many of the RCAF’s Lysanders were later converted to target tugs. Lysanders were operated by all of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan’s (BCATP) Bombing and Gunnery Schools in Canada. Postwar, four Lysanders were used for crop spraying in Alberta.
