Thoughts from my notebook This summer is absolutely flying by, as I write this, I’m just heading out to see the Elvis festival shake up Collingwood! August is going to be a busy one! I look forward to another month filled with golf tournaments, music festivals, long weekends, grand openings, fresh produce, campfires and BBQ’s, just to name a few.

Regularly I get asked ‘how is the magazine going?’ I cannot say enough good things about it. Of course “deadline week” is always busy and stressful, but I enjoy everything about my job as Owner and Publisher of a publication that celebrates the amazing things and people of our local communities. The hardest part of my job is keeping up with everything that is going on, so please feel free to email or call me, or submit upcoming events on the online calendar www.georgianlife.ca. I want to help make your events successful and we try to cover as many as possible. I want to send out a huge thank you to Mr. Peter Gibson “Gibby” for his hardwork and dedication to helping Georgian Life get where it is today! He has decided to “retire” from ad sales, but has been more than amazing in helping train our newest member of the Georgian Life team, Michelle Ioannou. Michelle came to Collingwood from Oliphant almost a year ago where she worked at the Wiarton Echo Community newspaper. We are happy to have you onboard Michelle, so a big fat WELCOME! I look forward to your creative ideas and getting to know you better. There are great things going on everyday this month, so see you out there!

Red, White and Blue Mountain It was indeed a beautiful sea of red and white on Canada Day as the Village at Blue welcomed all to join in celebrating the 146th birthday of our great nation. Blue’s Gord Canning along with Town of Blue Mountains Mayor Ellen Anderson and Hon. Dr. Kellie Leitch, MP (Simcoe-Grey) greeted the eager and patriotic crowd and of course joined in the singing of our national anthem. As in years past the celebration would not be complete without the awesome Canada cupcakes! Wonderful ceremony! Awesome day! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Everyone’s been hungry for Summer to arrive, and around here it’s as much about what to eat as about the heat!
Perhaps a special café brew will blend perfectly into the start of your sunny day. Lunch is up, so spice it up with a Mexican
twist or visit the ‘old country’ with a new fresh take on Italian. Remember there’s always room for a sweet or savoury pie... especially when it’s homemade and gourmet! After lounging by the bay, why not dive into the freshest ‘catch of the day’ and get hooked on local fish ‘n chips? Or make it a meal to remember by the Mountains, and indulge in views as fine as the restaurant’s reviews. When dining here, ‘Local’ means love of food, care for ingredients, and our way of life on Georgian Bay. Any way you slice it, it’s a recipe for refreshment. So make sure to explore our extraordinary epicurean delights before the sun sets on summer, and put the ‘eat’ back into ‘heat’.

Business Profile: Burger Bob’s Catering creating memorable meals from the mountain It was over three decades ago when a young grill cook named Bob emerged from the midst of the Blue Mountains, where he gained the appetite for achieving culinary success. If life were a meal, consider this his starting course. Bob’s first position at Blue Mountain Resorts in 1977 was what he playfully calls being “a glorified cook: a burger-flipper”. Thus began his infamous nickname ‘Burger Bob’, a name that he cherishes to this day as it reminds him of his humble roots and how much his epicurean expertise has evolved. His employer sensed Burger Bob’s palate-pleasing potential and enrolled him in George Brown College’s esteemed Culinary Program, which garnered young Bob’s official Chef papers in 1981. And so thus began the next course as he gained experience along the great resorts, fine-tuning his fine-dining flair from Blue Mountain to Osler Bluff to Toronto Ski Club... and finally rested his recipes at Blue Mountain Golf and Country Club in 1998. It was also during this course that Bob met his wonderful soulmate and Co-Chef for life, Dianne, who shares his love for fun and food. A short jaunt out to the West Coast was the only hiccup for his local fans that favoured his feasts, but BOB IS BACK with a vengeance! This local Chef has recently reclaimed his respected spot at Blue Mountain Golf and Country Club’s restaurant, which is also available to rent for Weddings, Sporting events, and other Holiday feasts that deserve the quality and care he’s been bred to serve. It’s also the headquarters for his full-service catering creations beyond the Club, with a staff of over a dozen dedicated people that aim to please at any event, anywhere. An outgoing, fun-loving, and sociable Chef is the first ingredient in making your festive feast a recipe to remember. Bob Schmuck and his lovely wife Dianne Young of Burger Bob’s Catering warmly welcome your inquiries, and look forward to making you ‘flip’ over his food. Burger Bob’s Catering: Email Bob or Dianne at burgerbob@rogers.com or call 705-445-3930 or 705-444-2245. Blue Mountain Golf and Country Club, 706 10th Line, Collingwood, ON, L9Y 2Y9. Theatre Collingwood Goes to War... with Billy Bishop! and both were victorious! No doubt Billy would be proud as to how his story was conveyed on the stage and seeing as each performance of the run received accolades and a standing ovation I suggest that we should consider this a big win for the performers and our local Theatre Collingwood! Bravo, and here’s to lots of ‘broken legs’ through the rest of the summer theatre season. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Well this year we had a chance to capture many memories over 4 days. Elvis impersonators and tribute artists were everywhere downtown. Even the unpredictable weather and downpours on Saturday didn’t phase the hard-core fans. The jammed packed streets; electric energy, great food, and amazing entertainment provided a little something for everyone. Photos: Dave West Photography

EXPLORATIONS GREEN SUMMEr CAMP
For all your on the water needs
It doesn’t matter where you grew up – in the suburbs, in the big city, or on a farm, chances are you spent a lot of your time in summer (and winter!) months playing in the outdoors. You’d play all day, come in for lunch, and head out again till dusk. You’d come home sun-kissed, likely filthy, tired out and happy. Due to a number of circumstances, children these days have overall fewer experiences with nature. However, spending time in nature is essential for child development. Kids need time to explore their natural world.
SEASONAL & TRANSIENT DOCKAGE Cranberry Marina
Exposure to nature has been shown to reduce stress and increase attention spans. When a child is out in nature, all the senses get activated. They are hearing, touching, seeing and even tasting. They are suddenly a part of the natural world, something much bigger than a computer screen. While in nature, a child’s brain has a chance to rejuvenate, to fill up it’s reserves, so the next time they are required to focus they’ll be much better equipped. The Environment Network Explorations Green Summer Camp is a safe, exciting way for kids to get outside, and into nature. Their camps allow children to learn, explore and create long lasting memories while being active outdoors. We are located in town near some of the most beautiful natural attractions our area has to offer. The children also get to connect and build relationships between themselves and the environment. One of the most prized activities at camp is the River Trek that takes place once a week. Together and under supervision the children and counselors bike to Pretty River and begin their river trek from the opening of the bay right up to a man made swimming area. During this trek the children get to learn about river flows, currents, decreasing water levels, local animals and natural wild life that they may come across. The children also get to enjoy swimming in a natural environment, and begin to appreciate the natural world around them. “We should not think of a child’s experience in nature as an extracurricular activity. It should be thought of as vital to children’s health and development.” Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder For more information on the programs offered by the Environment Network please visit www.environmentnetwork.org or call 705-446-0551.

Business Profile: DAVE FERGUSON MEMORIALS Set in from the bustle of the world, through a lovely treed and shaded lawn where a gentle family pup ‘Peanut’ warmly greets you, sits a private bench by a craftsman’s workshop. It is here that bereaving families can find some peace, reflection, and comfort in the difficult process of commemorating their lost loved ones. The craftsman, Dave Ferguson, has dedicated his working life to helping families create memorial stones that honour and cherish those that have passed. His business, Dave Ferguson Memorials, is owned and personally operated by himself, his wife and family members, which fosters a much more personal and compassionate connection with his clients. Dave’s business journey began in the cozy town of Stayner, where he developed his unique talent for designing and building monuments for over 15 years. His beloved family member Uncle Bill’s strong work ethics and compassion for people had greatly influenced him during this time, and inspired Dave to one day open his own family shop. In 2008, Dave Ferguson Memorials began the service that would create countless custom monuments for families across Canada and abroad. Dave’s creative and caring touch is made evident with the skillful techniques he employs to capture images and words on his monuments. The use of ‘etching’ into the stone allows him to realize beautiful and intricate recreations such as a cherished family home landscape, or even a portrait of your loved one with their happiest expression as you’d like to remember them. The use of ‘carving’ creates bolder impressions that can be felt within the stone, which suits classic statements with rich typography and timeless images such as a majestic tree in a gentle wind. Columbarium structures are also an option, and provide a unique silhouette to commemorate a special loved one. Whatever clients choose, they can rest easy with their decision. As Dave Ferguson says, “Our main goal is compassion and respect for our clients. I am so confident of our workmanship and our quality that I have placed my own name on all the monuments.” Dave and Betty Ferguson warmly welcome you whenever you are ready to make that distinguished and lasting statement in honour of family. Dave Ferguson Memorials is located at 1062 Airport Rd., Stayner, ON, Canada, L0M 1S0. Telephone: 705-428-2818 or Toll Free: 1-888-424-8201 You’re invited to visit their portfolio of creations on their website at www.fergusonmemorials.com Written by: Michelle Ioannou
Major Investment in the THE NEW AGE OF CARE CAMPAIGN! The Morrissette Family support innovative approaches in the field of healthcare. When they heard that the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital’s family physicians were pioneers in bringing technology to the bedside they wanted to be a part of the New Age of Care Campaign. With a leadership pledge of $500,000 over the next 10 years, The Pierre L. Morrissette Family Foundation confirmed its commitment to the Collingwood community. “Our family spends much of its time in the Blue Mountains area. It is great to know that the local hospital is well equipped with new technology and that it is able to attract top medical professionals to the community,” said Pierre Morrissette. This latest donation brings the New Age of Care total to $8.3 million raised with $1.7 million to go. Winetasters sample some whites The Winetasters of Collingwood came together once again on July 9th, featuring whites of the world lead by the eminent Robert Ketchin of Georgian Hills Winery. He shared his vast knowledge of white wines. We all learned a great deal and enjoyed a wonderful and informative evening. Guests Anne and John came from as far away as Ireland! A great time was had by all! The discussion and camaraderie continued into the evening and ended with a great dinner at The Huron Club. Holy Cow! That’s great jazz! Maybe not Holy Cow but Holly Cole, Swing Out Sister, Kenny Garrett, Jeff Lorber, George St. Kitts, Mary McKay, Luke McMaster, Andria Simone, and on... and on. WOW! What a line-up for the inaugural Jazz on the Mountain Festival. There was a bit of everything for music enthusiasts from hot jazz to pop and a little bit of funk. There is no doubt that this was the best new jazz festival north of Toronto and the positive feedback from those who attended bodes well for the future of what is sure to become a musical mainstay in the Southern Georgian Bay region! Simply outstanding! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Fall Home Maintenance When the sun is shining and the temperatures are warm it’s easy to put off preparing your home for the fall season. But with a little planning, the list of things to do can gradually be checked off and your home will be ready for whatever Mother Nature brings our way. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation have a Home Maintenance Schedule that is quite extensive. Some of their recommendations for fall maintenance include: • Check chimneys for obstructions such as nests. • Vacuum electric baseboard heaters to remove dust. • Remove the grills on forced-air systems and vacuum inside the ducts. • Check and clean or replace furnace air filters each month during the heating season. • Check smoke, carbon monoxide and security alarms and replace batteries. • Check sump pump and line to ensure proper operation. • Replace window screens with storm windows. • Remove interior insect screens from windows to allow air from the heating system to keep condensation off window glass and to allow more free solar energy into your home. • Ensure windows and skylights close tightly; repair or replace weather stripping as needed. • Ensure all doors to the outside shut tightly, and check other doors for ease of use. Replace door weather stripping if required. • Cover outside of air conditioning units and shut off power. • Ensure that the ground around your home slopes away from the foundation wall, so that water does not drain into your basement. • Clean leaves from eavestroughs and roof, and test downspouts to ensure proper drainage from the roof. • Drain and store outdoor hoses. • Have water tested for quality. It is recommended that you test for bacteria every six months. • Winterize landscaping, for example, store outdoor furniture, prepare gardens and, if necessary, protect young trees or bushes for winter.
Regular home maintenance is the best way to avoid costly repairs. By taking the time to prepare your home for the coming season you will be taking care of your investment, saving money and living comfortably. Famarama Translated Means Great Family Fun At Blue I’ll leave it to our friends at Blue Mountain to describe the fun filled weekend. “Family Celebrations were in full swing all weekend with amazing shows and activities! Contests and prize giveaways offered by the Lego Playcation! The Silly People, IncrediBrent, and The Second City Improv Show provided plenty of laughter!” A great time, and I couldn’t have said it better myself. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography
Resolving Whiplash Whiplash is a relatively common injury that occurs to a person’s neck following a sudden acceleration-deceleration force. This occurs most often in car accidents and also from sports related incidents like downhill skiing crashes or a hard check while playing hockey. Major symptoms of whiplash are neck pain, stiffness and headaches. Also common are vertigo, fatigue, difficulty concentrating and numbness or tingling down the arms. Anyone that has whiplash will tell you the worst thing about it is its pervasive, enduring nature, lingering in the body for years after the causative event. Even whiplash sufferers who have had regular therapy and done their stretches diligently often find they are at best, managing their symptoms but not truly getting better. So, what’s going on in the body? Why don’t people get better after a whiplash? When a person incurs a whiplash, the fascia in the affected areas of the body contracts protectively, and often it doesn’t relax off afterwards. The body’s fascia, also known as connective tissue, is infused into and connects every single cell, tissue and system in the body. Therefore, the result of a sustained contraction in the fascial system from a whiplash is abnormal tensions on literally every structure in that affected area of the body. A healthy fascial network has incredible tensile strength, which serves to protect our bodies. However, in traumatized tissue, the strength of this body system acts against us, causing the exhausting and unrelenting physical symptoms of whiplash, including postural misalignment, systemic fatigue, tension and chronic pain, nerve entrapment, occluded blood vessels, even compromised cellular health and poor endocrine functioning. Why do so many therapies give only temporary relief from whiplash? How can someone get lasting results? The basic structure of our body’s fascial system is an elasto-collagenous complex, made up of two distinct types of interlaced fibres. Most manual therapies employ techniques that only affect the elastic fibres, which creates only transient symptom relief. An example of this is feeling great after a massage, but three hours or three days later, all the symptoms have resurfaced. To get effective, lasting results, one must engage the collagenous component of the fascia. This is the underlying principle of Myofascial Release (also called MFR). MFR is a gentle, yet very deep reaching and effective form of bodywork that blends manual techniques and energy work. Through a series of targeted holds, stretches and assisted movements, it helps people resolve conditions of chronic pain and imbalance in their bodies. If you suffer from whiplash, MFR might be something for you to seek out and try. It is a drug-free way to achieve physical release and lasting pain relief. It treats the whole person, not just one body system. Each session is highly individualized, addressing and releasing the holding patterns unique to each client. Rebecca Donald practices MFR locally, at MFR Clinic in Clarksburg Rebecca is trained in the John F Barnes Myofascial Release approach. For more info: www.mfrclinic.com

Jazz & Blues Summer Series It’s a good thing that The Collingwood Jazz & Blues Society has an extremely strong line-up for their summer series this year because as is often heard in the entertainment industry, certain performers are a ‘hard act to follow’. So when perennial favourite Jordan John launched the season in front of a huge, boisterous crowd with a simply outstanding evening of music the ‘minefield’ could have been set. Great evening of entertainment Jordan! Look forward to seeing and hearing you again soon. Thanks Frank, volunteers, Society members and supporters for an exceptional outing and yes the rest of the series looks spectacular! Be sure to check it out. www.collingwoodjazz.ca Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Collingwood Celebrates Canada When Collingwood celebrates Canada Day it does it well! As a community we gather in front of the Federal building downtown and join in the singing of our national anthem, receive greetings from members of various levels of government, take part in a very moving Canadian Citizen Reaffirmation ceremony, and if even for a moment set aside our economic struggles, hardships, political differences and woes and are thankful for all the blessings and freedoms we enjoy in this great country. And then of course we dig in to that awesome Canada Day cake! Thank you Collingwood and thank you Canada. Your faithful and forever grateful son, Dave. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

People who visited the Miller Dairy Farm got to see their beautiful Jersey cows and calves as well as how the milk is collected, processed and bottled. Workouts Never Looked So Good! Collingwood’s newest and most ‘upscale’ fitness centre, The Northwood Club, opened their doors to the community on Saturday July 20th for an Open House and ‘Boot Camp’ to give people the opportunity to check out the beautiful facility and take advantage of a two week trial membership. The surroundings are amazing, the equipment is first-rate and plentiful, the staff attentive, the amenities great and honestly in an environment this luxurious you won’t even break a sweat... although you might perspire. Be sure to check it out! www.thenorthwoodfitnessclub.com Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Memories of Collingwood Harbour -1915
ith the Collingwood Harbour about to experience an increased amount of activity with the arrival of the tall ships in mid August, I thought that we would take a trip back in time to when the harbor was called Hen and Chickens; and was a major terminus for transportation to the west for both people and goods as our county expanded. The Hen and Chickens Harbour seems like a whimsical name for the place which was soon to become one of the most important ports and railroad terminals in Northern Ontario. In 1853, a northern terminus of the Ontario, Simcoe and Huron Railroad was needed to connect Georgian Bay with Lake Ontario. It was due to the foresight of the railway engineers who recognized the potential of the facilities that this area was established and renamed Collingwood, in honour of an English Admiral. The town, literally, was to spring up right out of the bush. The northern railway terminus extended all the way to the already busy deep water harbour servicing freight and passengers north through Georgian Bay and Lake Huron to the “Great West and North” and south to Toronto and Southern Ontario. With the opening of the new dry dock, shipbuilding was flourishing as was the lumber and fishing industries. “Palace Steamer” ran regularly between Collingwood, Chicago, Sault Ste. Marie, Owen Sound and other ports of call, all contributing to Collingwood as an important harbour and industrial center. By 1900, all of this activity and commerce had earned the Collingwood community the nickname “Chicago of the North”. The painting, Memories of Collingwood Harbour - 1915, depicts the busy Harbour on a typical afternoon in 1915 while highlighting the various activities for which it was famous. In the background steamers are alongside the dominant profile of the big grain elevator, a conspicuous landmark that could be seen from Duntroon Hills to Christian Island. In the distance, box cars wait on the wooden wharf. Engine number 2462 has just started to haul freight cars out of the Grand Trunk freight shed. Alongside, the “City of Collingwood” is taking on passengers for her daily trip. “Chicora” a magnificent passenger ship, is getting up steam to make ready her 1,000 mile run to Prince Arthur’s Landing, while a local Ford pick-up is making a delivery of dry goods for the long trip. Onlookers watch the activity aboard a small fishing vessel and in the calm waters of the harbour some Watts’ fishing boats, that were built right in Collingwood, are securing their rigging and nets as another one sails in from the mornings catch. “Memories of Collingwood Harbour - 1915” was painted by renowned Ontario watercolourist, Ray Davidson. Limited Edition reproduction of this remarkable image are available at Georgian Frame Gallery, 172 Hurontario Street, Collingwood. Call, 705-445-4477 to reserve your copy of Collingwood history today.
