Lake Simcoe/South-eastern Georgian Bay Clean-up Fund
Fonds d’assainissement du lac Simcoe et du sud-est de la baie Georgienne
Environment Canada’s Lake Simcoe/South-eastern Georgian Bay Clean-up Fund is seeking Letters of Intent for projects to help protect and restore the health of Lake Simcoe and South-eastern Georgian Bay.
The Fund will consider projects that reduce phosphorus inputs, restore habitat or add to the scientific understanding of the lake and bay for decision making. Projects will be considered in a two-stage process. Those successful in the Letter of Intent stage would then submit a detailed project proposal. The detailed proposal will undergo a more extensive review process. Successful applicants may receive one-third of total project costs from the Fund, and in exceptional cases up to two-thirds of the costs may be considered. Letters of Intent describing proposed projects and partners must be received no later than September 26, 2014. To find out how to apply or for more information, please contact: Lake Simcoe/South-eastern Georgian Bay Clean-up Fund Environment Canada 4905 Dufferin Street Toronto ON M3H 5T4 Telephone: 416-739-5908 Email: ls-gbfund@ec.gc.ca
Is it time for your aging parent to have a Caregiver?

Watercraft rentals, Boat cruises, Water skiing, and more
Our parents have lived through an amazing period in history and have been very independent and in control of their lives. They are very reluctant to become a burden to their loved ones or children. However, it may take a “wake up call” or health scare to make them realize it may be time for health care assistance in the home or move to a managed retirement residence. As adult children, we are not always able to anticipate our parent’s need for assistance. And not anticipated, it can hit you like a runaway train when the need arises. If you haven’t prepared, there may be emotional distress and stress around managing work, family and your parent’s needs. One way to avoid this is to start monitoring your parent’s physical and mental wellness so you can start researching the care options should your parent(s) start showing signs of needing assistance.

at the
golfcranberry.com
What are some of the common signs your parents may need some form of assistance or care? Here are signals to look for: Your parents are having difficulty with or are incapable of performing normal activities such as: bathing, toileting, dressing/grooming, moving from place to place, walking, eating. There may be changes in physical appearance, such as: sloppy appearance/poor hygiene, noticeable weight loss, burns or black-and-blue marks on their skin.
Summer Camp Registrations OPEN
Other clues include: the house is not being maintained, urine odour in the house, unopened mail, unfilled prescriptions, or medication not being taken, changes in mood/ confusion and repetitive speech.
705-445-5796
If you start seeing one or more of these indicators it is time to starting talking about their care needs and planning for future care, be it at home or managed facility. Let everyone be part of the solution and most importantly any change must be handled with extreme care, sensitivity and love. Spinach & Goat Cheese Stuffed Chicken Breasts with Quinoa
You can stuff chicken breasts by butterflying them (cutting them horizontally almost all the way in half, opening like a book, stuffing and then closing), but for a really tight filling that won’t escape while it cooks, try the method in this recipe.
It’s never too early to think
about the 2015 GOLF SEASON G . C . Est. 1986
Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 30 minutes
4 tsp (20 mL) canola oil ½ cup (125 mL) finely minced onion 1 pkg (142 g) PC Organics Baby Spinach 1/3 cup (75 mL) crumbled PC Blue Menu Goat’s Milk Cheese 4 PC Blue Menu Air Chilled Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts, about 850 g ½ tsp (2 mL) salt ¼ tsp (1 mL) freshly ground black pepper 1 pkg (225 g) PC Organics Golden & Black Quinoa
1. In large nonstick frying pan, heat 2 tsp (10 mL) of oil over medium heat. Add onions; cook, stirring often, for 5 to 6 minutes or until tender and light golden. Add 1 packed cup (250 mL) of the spinach; cook for 1 minute or until wilted but still bright green. Remove from heat; let cool completely, about 15 minutes. Once cooled, firmly stir in goat cheese until a chunky even mixture forms; set aside.

2. Meanwhile, lay one chicken breast on work surface. Using sharp paring knife, make a 1-inch (2.5 cm) wide cut into the thickest part of the breast, slicing into the breast in a pocket shape about 2 to 3 –inches (5 to 7.5 cm) long. Repeat with remaining breasts. 3. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
4. Place goat cheese filling into a small resealable bag; cut a hole about ½ -inch (1 cm) wide in one of the bottom corners of the bag, or into a piping bag fitted with a plain ½ -inch (1 cm) wide tip. Insert cut end of bag just inside ‘pocket’ of chicken breast; carefully pipe in about ¼ of filling. Repeat with remaining filling and breasts.
5. In large nonstick ovenproof frying pan, heat remaining 2 tsp (10 mL) oil over medium-high heat. Add stuffed chicken breasts; season with salt and pepper. Sear for 2 to 3 minutes or until lightly golden; turn breasts over and place pan in centre of oven. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until chicken is golden and cooked through. 6. Meanwhile, in small saucepan bring 2 cups (500 mL) water to a boil Stir in quinoa. Reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, for 12 to 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand 5 minutes. Fluff with fork and set aside.

There is no other way to race than ‘all out’ Thunder, lightning or rain could not put a damper on the 4th Annual Beaver Crawl Triathlon held on Canada Day. Competitors from the area enjoyed the event starting at Ravenna with a 10km bike ride into Heathcote, climbing into canoes or kayaks for a 5km run down the Beaver River into Slabtown. Brighter skies welcomed 56 participants into Slabtown where they portaged their canoes or kayaks across the bridge, finishing the event with a 3km run into Clarksburg. A birthday party fit for the King of Rock ‘n Roll What a party it was as the Collingwood Elvis Festival celebrated its 20th Anniversary! Elvis would have been both awestruck and humbled to gaze down Hurontario Street from the main stage and see the thousands who gathered as they do each July to enjoy his music, honour his memory and have just an amazing time at what has become the largest annual Elvis Festival in the world! As this was a milestone event it was only fitting that this year’s VIP’s included the charming, lovely and most gracious Priscilla Presley accompanied by her “Shades of Elvis” co-author Christopher Ameruoso, artist Mario A.C. Della Casa, eight of Elvis’ film co-stars and returning for his second year our great friend and emcee Memphis Jones. The competition as it is each year was tremendous with 128 Elvis Tribute Artists registered to challenge for the crown. All of the talented competitors were simply outstanding but as in all contests a winner must be declared and Collingwood was proud to crown Gordon Hendricks of the U.K. (Pro Concert Years Winner) as Grand Champion. However as Gordon had already qualified at another location, he was ineligible to attend Memphis representing Collingwood. Cliff Wright of Athens, Georgia (Pro Early Years Winner) was named the Collingwood representative for the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Contest, to be held in Memphis during Elvis Week in August. Congratulations to all on the biggest and best Collingwood Elvis Festival ever and a special note of thanks to Rosemarie O’Brien and her hardworking staff of volunteers, the Town of Collingwood, Sponsors and of course you the fans who support this remarkable event each year! Welcome to Osler Brook “2014” “Along with my partners, I have been given the opportunity to carry on the rich traditions established by the founding members and their families. Together with architect, Graham Cooke, Greens Superintendent, Jason Honeyball and staff, they managed to create one of Canada’s finest golf facilities. As you drive up the laneway and climb through the first stage of the 260 feet of elevation change, you will know that you are in a special place. Look back over the lower nine to unlimited vistas of Georgian Bay and you will feel that you indeed have come to the place they describe as… the view from the top. Nestled on 230 acres between the deep green of the Escarpment and the rich blue of Georgian Bay, is OslerBrook, a private club, designed and built by its members for its members. The environmentally responsible championship course, with its six tee boxes on every hole, is a unique combination of pleasure and challenge for golfers of all handicaps. The soaring timber, stone and glass Clubhouse seems to rise out of the land, yet be a part of it. Fully equipped for golf, fine dining and casual patio service, all the amenities are serviced by professional friendly staff whose only goal is your ultimate satisfaction. In May 2014, OslerBrook Golf and Country Club began its goal to re-establish its reputation as one of Georgian Bay’s finest private facilities. OslerBrook has opened the course to non-member players with bookings available up to seven days in advance. They look forward to hearing from you regarding your experience. This will provide them with an opportunity to answer any questions you may have.

STAY | PLAY | EAT | SHOP The Big Apple stays where it is! The Big Apple, located in the heart of Meaford’s downtown shopping area, has been the subject of much speculation over the past several months. Council voted on December 9th 2013, to move Welcome Centre services in-house, no longer to be the responsibility of the Chamber of Commerce. Since 1974, the Chamber owned Big Apple structure has been a highly visible icon in Meaford. Its future became a concern for many in the community when the Chamber announced that it would have to sell the Apple. The Chamber was inundated with serious inquiries alongside pleas from the community to “save our Apple!”
the shape of an apple, since at that time, 55% of all of Ontario`s apples came from orchards in this area. It required the generosity of several businesses and organizations to make this dream a reality. Money was donated by local businesses, in particular the Globe Mills. Members of the Kinsmen Club volunteered to provide the labour; E. C. King supplied the cement; Ormsby Block provided supplies and Knights donated the B.C. cedar, which had to be formed into the apple shape. This was accomplished by placing the wood in the pool of the Hill Top Motel over night after the water temperature had been turned up as high as possible. Amerock donated the fibreglass and Bill Stewart crafted the top leaf in his metal shop. As a community effort, the structure exemplifies the ability of Meaford’s citizens to accomplish a major task by working together. The Apple has always been staffed by either students or volunteers who from 1974 until 2013 welcomed tourists to Meaford and provided them with local information and answers to their regional queries.
This week Shirley Keaveney, outgoing president of the Chamber of Commerce, announced that the Chamber Board has decided to leave this local landmark right where it is, re-purposing it to offer support and promotion for all Chamber member businesses and also to prepare the Apple to operate as the “go to” location for business related inquiries. “We are very pleased to announce that the Apple has reopened!” said Keaveney, “Please drop by anytime Tuesday thru Saturday between 10 and 4 to say hello to Victoria, our Chamber information specialist, to make a business inquiry or to investigate new business opportunities in our community.” Since its inception, the Apple has represented the pride of a community coming together to accomplish a goal. In 1974, the Chamber of Commerce, under the leadership of Noel Crawford, Chamber Tourism Manager of the time, recognized the need for a location in downtown Meaford from which Visitor Information services could be readily provided. It was decided that the structure would take

Now as the new business hub of Meaford the Big Apple will remain a very special part of Meaford’s downtown, reminiscent of both the contributions made over the years by all members of the Chamber of Commerce who highly value the wonderful volunteer spirit which has always been the essence of our community. Old School Closing The final school bell rung at Nottawasaga and Creemore Public School Annex in Creemore. This grand old building, built in 1917, was celebrated by current and former students spanning several generations. Now decommissioned by Simcoe County Board of Education, the hallowed halls of NCPS will no longer hear children`s laughter. by Margot Nicolson FRAMING & DESIGN TIPS If you are not familiar with frame design, here are some quick tips to help you achieve good results. It’s important to realize these are all generalizations and there will be exceptions where you may want to take a different approach to your design. Framing Tip #7 - When to Use Clear (Shiny) Glass or Acrylic Clear finish glass or acrylic helps to maintain sharp lines and shapes, bold colours and fine details. The use of non-glare (also called Reflection Control) products can soften or mute these types of images. #8 - When to Use Non-Glare Glass or Acrylic Non-Glare (also called Reflection Control) has a soft finish and it will diffuse details and colours. It looks great when the art itself seems intentionally soft in focus or muted in colour. #9 - Frames Can Vary in Style From the Art Many pieces of art look great when framed in a moulding style that’s unexpected. This piece of art is contemporary in style, but done in a somewhat crude and primitive manner. The frame has those same qualities, helping them work well together. #10 - High Contrast Frame Designs The black and white photo has a strong degree of contrast, therefore it looks best with a high contrast frame design. In case you don’t know, black and white provide the highest degree of contrast of any colours. #11 - When to Bottom-Weight a Mat A bottom-weighted mat is one where the border below the art is wider than the borders on top and sides. Logical reasons to bottom-weight include when the lower half of the art is darker or contains larger shapes or patterns than the upper half. You may also choose it for a classic look or on art of value that you do not want to cut down. #12 - Designing Multiple Opening Mats When you want to place more than one picture in a frame, a multiple opening mat provides the means to bring them together. It is common to use a wider border around the outer edges than the amount of space you use between images. When working with more than a few pieces, it can add interest to use different mat opening shapes. Georgian Frame Gallery

PROFESSIONALS HERE TO HELP YOU Spa-ology - hand-crafted original recipes
MS.tique - The European Spa
Spa-ology is a family-run business dedicated to making hand-crafted, original recipe bath and body products using only natural and simple ingredients that are good for your skin.
MS.tique was created by Eva Daczicky in 1997. MS.tique just started it’s 16th year at the same location: 43 Hurontario Street, on the 2nd floor just across from Loblaws. The spa occupies over 1200 sq. feet with a modern, comfortable and pleasing atmosphere. They are fully equipped and their goal is to ensure each and every client is fully satisfied. They strive to provide the best esthetic services available in the area while at the same time maintaining prices at competitive levels. Eva’s favourite skin care products are: Glycolic exfoliant in the evening to remove the dead cells thus promoting the growth of new skin and underlying collagen. This is followed in the morning by the application of Hyaluronic Acid Serum to maximize your skin’s ability to retain moisture. These treatments are in addition to your regular day/night cream regimen. For the unfortunate with bags and dark circles under their eyes, they suggest Hollywood Eye Magic Serum, they have found this to be the best product to minimize this condition.
The team includes Ed Bulanda, aka “The Recipe Guy”, Rhea Burns and her daughters Stefanie Shaw and Bridget Liersch. Ed, our Recipe Guy is well versed in the uses of essential oils and their health benefits. Together they make bath salts, foot soaks, massage oils, moistures disks and soaps. They enjoy educating others about the benefits of the essential oils and butters they use that benefit the skin as well as the mind and spirit. Bath Salts were the first and favourite, they help to soften your skin and the different blends will rejuvenate, refresh, or provide you with a bit of tranquility. They know the benefits of a good soak and that’s why their motto is “Bring Back the Bath”. If you love natural products visit Spa-ology at www.spaology.ca to learn more about the benefits of essential oils, butters and all the natural ingredients we use in our products.
Don’t give up on your skin! there is help. All the above products and many others are available for purchase at the spa. Their most popular treatments are: Prestige Facials, Micro-dermabrasion, Chemical Peels and Laser Hair Removal. Some of the many other services and treatments they offer are: Day Spa Packages, Spa pedicures, Manicures, Gel Nails, Shellac, Make Up, Eye, Brow Lash Tinting, Eye Lash Extensions, Ear Candling, Waxing, Brazilian Waxing, 40 Minute Cosmetic Teeth Whitening. Swedish Relaxation Massage, RMT – Therapeutic Massage. For those who love the tanned skin glow, they offer both tanning and spray tans. Please feel free send them your email address in order to forward you prompt notifications of their monthly specials, promotions, coupons and more. 43 Hurontario St. Collingwood 705 445-0089 www.spacollingwood.ca

Raspberries, raspberries and so much more! The 4th Annual Raspberry Festival was held at the Farmers Pantry in Clarksburg on July 19th. The market offered tasty treats and cool drinks as well as locally grown fruits and veggies. Festival goers also enjoyed a scenic wagon tour of a working farm, travelling through the orchard to see the apple trees and pumpkin patches growing. And of course there were plenty of ripe raspberries ready for picking! Additional activities included pony rides, mini-golf, petting zoo, rope maze, and the Wildlife Interactive Center. If you missed this event, no worries, the Farmers Pantry is a great place to visit anytime this summer! www.farmerspantry.com. Photos: mycollingwood.ca | Story: Selena Blais

Ahoy Matey! A pirate ship arriving in Collingwood harbour might normally strike fear in the hearts of locals but in this case Liana’s Ransom out of Halifax was in port for a friendly visit. Rather than looting and pillaging the town Captain Joe Tilley and his crew of brigands opted to entertain guests with tall tales from the high seas, deck tours and enjoyable harbour cruises. A great weekend of maritime entertainment for our community and the best part … no one had to walk the plank! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Look as good as you see... There is a new business in Collingwood - check out A. B. See Optical located at 21 Simcoe Street. They provide professional optical services including: prescription glasses, sport glasses, sunglasses and contact lenses and also have an onsite Registered Optician for any adjustments or vision concerns. An optician is a licensed professional trained to help you see better – whether you’re near or farsighted, or have low vision due to more complex eye health issues. The profession of Opticianry is regulated in Canada and governed provincially by strict standards to protect your vision and ensure opticians provide you care of the highest standard. Registered opticians are specially trained to design, fit, and dispense eyeglasses, contact lenses, low vision aids, and prosthetic ocular devices. They interpret written prescriptions from ophthalmologists (medical doctors) and optometrists (non-medical eye care professionals) to determine the specifications of ophthalmic appliances necessary to correct a person’s eyesight. Registered opticians also recommend eyeglass frames, lenses, and lens coatings after considering the power of the lenses and the customer’s occupation, habits, and facial features. Registered opticians measure clients’ eyes, including the distance between the centers of the pupils and the distance between the surface and the lens. At A.B. See Optical they strive to deliver quality products with ultimate clarity. They offer a vast selection of top quality Designer Brand glasses for all ages and genders. Brands such as: Ray Ban, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Easy Clip, Kate Spade, Under Armour and many more!” Drop in to visit them and “see” what they are all about! 21 Simcoe St., Collingwood. Taiwan Visitors More than 200 people from the Toronto Ching Kwok Temple congregation visited Creemore for the first time; they all had a fabulous time because they were welcomed by friendly and smiling faces. In addition to shopping and touring The Creemore Farmer’s Market, they visited the shops on Mill Street. The group from Toronto included seven monks and nuns, with two members travelling from Taiwan. The tour concluded with members of the Creemore BIA Executive, Corey Finkelstein, Cheryl Robertson and Jenn Hubbs graciously accepting a miniature statue gift : “Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva” (an Enlightened Being with great universal compassion who willingly delays Buddha-hood for the benefit of all sentient beings), from the monks of Ching Kwok Temple.
