After 5 at Bonnie’s The Collingwood Chamber held a wonderful After 5 ‘Gift it Forward’ event with hostess with the mostess Bonnie Dorgelo on November 7th. There was plenty of delicious food from Dags & Willow as well as a variety of wine to make the networking a little easier. Bonnie recently moved her Art Gallery/Jewellery Studio to 48 Pine Street in Collingwood, definitely worth the climb up the stairs to see her beautiful artwork and stunning sterling silver & swarovski crystal jewellery. Thoughts from my notebook Now that December is upon us, the festive nature of the holidays is starting to take hold. It is a very busy time for many of us! The outdoor enthusiasts are counting down the days before they can hit the slopes and trails with skis, snowboards, snowshoes and snowmobiles. The crafty ones are hopping from one art show and craft fair to another, filling their bags with one-of-a kind treasures. Families will be bundling up the kids for Santa Claus parades and settling in on chilly nights with a cup of hot cocoa in hand. Bosses will be toasting their hard-working employees at Christmas parties and volunteers from all walks of life will be collecting much needed donations of food and money to help make Christmas a little easier for those who need it. A warm welcome to our winter weekenders - we hope you enjoy the many restaurants, galleries, shops and activities our communities have to offer! On behalf of the Georgian Life team, we wish you all a very happy and safe holiday season. It has been a fantastic year and looking back on the thousands of smiling faces in our photos, I have no doubt this month will bring many, many more! Thank you to all of the wonderful people and organizations that make ‘Georgian Life’ absolutely amazing! Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! See you out there!

Santa Say’s “do the

Gaslight Tour ‘Launching A Legacy’ In its fourth tremendously successful year Collingwood Gaslight Community Theatre Productions continues to draw rave reviews from audiences. This year’s production Launching A Legacy “captured the spirit and tradition of shipbuilding with stories about life in the shipyard and the Great Storm of 1913 the White Hurricane the worst storm in Great Lakes history. Despite the closure of the Collingwood Shipyards in 1986, its history continues to live on in Collingwood’s collective memory.” The theatrical walking tour of Collingwood has proven to be an annual favourite as fifteen performances over the four nights of the event were sold out in advance. This ‘top notch’ production is locally conceived, written, produced and performed... community theatre at its best! Congratulations to all those involved and a hint to those who missed out on this year’s presentation... order tickets for next year as soon as they become available! Downtown Meaford is ready for Christmas! Meaford’s 24th Annual Window Unveiling was held on November 23rd. The theme “A Small Town Christmas” was well displayed by several shops downtown. Strong winds and plenty of snow did not dampen the spirit of the local businesses or 150 anxious children eagerly awaiting the arrival of Santa. Singing from the choir filtered through the streets from Meaford Hall while residents shopped and enjoyed offerings of food and hot drinks from the retailers. Photos/Story: Kimberley Merrifield

Furball Goes Country That’s right pardner! The annual gala fundraiser in support of the Georgian Triangle Humane Society took on a decidedly country theme as a herd of ‘purrdy lil’ cowgirls’ and handsome cowboys wrangled up some great money for our furry four-legged friends. The event, held at Craigleith Ski Club was a sold out affair and based on the hootin’ and hollerin’ everyone had a darn tootin’ good time! Yeehaw! Kudos and thanks for your support! Update on the construction of the Hospice Home (Submitted November 20th) With the site work having only started six weeks ago, the building is already taking shape. The plan is to have the roof on and the building closed in before winter arrives allowing for construction to proceed normally through the winter with opening scheduled for summer of 2014. The address for Campbell House is 240 Erie street; this will also be the home of Hospice Georgian Triangle (HGT). We are very fortunate to have been able to secure this location that is right between the G&M Hospital and Sunset Manor. From there, Hospice will continue to provide its three existing programs: Home Visiting Support, Bereavement Assistance and Rainbows program helping children who are facing the loss of a loved one. The Home will start out as a six private bedroom Palliative Care Residence, at 6000 sq. ft. with the option to easily expand to 10 rooms as demand is required. As the role of a Hospice Home is to care for the Patient and their Family in a comfortable and dignified setting, it is designed to feel very much like a home. It will have a home style Kitchen, Dining Area, Great Room and a Quiet Room where family can meet privately. As well, each Patient Room will be able to accommodate overnight stays for a family member or loved one.
Winter must be cold for those with no warm memories. - Anonymous
While HGT is primarily a volunteer driven organization, we want everyone to understand the actual Patient Care in the home will only be provided by a professional medical team, including Registered Nurses and Personal Support Workers. Family doctors will continue to have full access to their patients while they are in the home. Volunteers will provide vital support in a number of non-medical patient and family support roles. The building of Campbell House has always been a community project and we are very pleased with the support we have received. The Capital Campaign budget for this project is $3.6 million and we are pleased to report that we have now raised $3.1 million, leaving us short $500,000. If you can help, please go on line at hospicegeorgiantriangle.com to donate or call us at 705-444-2555. There is also a WISH LIST on page 26.

CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY The terribly negligent activities of some businesses gives good reason for consumer suspicion, however, tarring all companies with the same brush is a gross injustice to the sustainability leadership demonstrated by many firms. For years, early adopters have been leading the charge to craft a more ecologically friendly world. These leaders have experimented and explored resulting in added value and competitive advantage. Who are some of these great leaders? Names that the average person will recognize like Patagonia, the outdoor clothing company, a perfect example of an early explorer of sustainable business practices. Patagonia’s corporate conduct is exemplary. Another corporation identified as an early adopter is Unilever. This company believes so strongly in sustainability that it is embedded in their core business strategy because their experience shows that it makes good business sense. Hats off to Walt Disney who accept their responsibilities to children and the Earth. Walt Disney has more influence on children than any other company on the planet. They are a sustainability leader through three core values: Act, Champion and Inspire. Act ethically and consider the consequences of your decisions on people and the planet. Champion happiness and wellbeing of kids and families. Inspire kids and families to make positive changes in the world that last.

BLUE MOUNTAIN VACUUM CENTRE
Depave Paradise is a project of Green Communities Canada and our local partners in nine communities. The Environment Network in Collingwood with volunteers within neighbourhoods have been removing unwanted pavement and planting gardens filled with native species in its place. Why Depave? Hard surfaces, such as driveways, parking lots and buildings interrupt the natural water cycle by preventing rain water from soaking into the ground and creating heat sinks; warming up our cities. By removing pavement and replacing it with native plants, and trees we are increasing the infiltration rate, recharging our groundwater supply, and cooling our neighbourhoods.

Lions help others in the community, and around the world Wasaga Beach Lions Club helped the storm-ravaged areas of the Philippines with $1,000. Lions Club International Foundation immediately sent US$30,000 to provide relief early Friday morning. This was prior to initial reports of the total devastation unfolding hour by hour. By Friday afternoon, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) provided a Major Catastrophe Grant of US$100,000. But that’s not all. As the storm struck, it happened that the OSEAL Forum was underway in Singapore. Within hours, the Lions from OSEAL donated an additional US$370,000 designated funds for Philippines relief efforts, bringing the total funds to US$500,000. There are more than 12,600 Lions in the Philippines in 380 clubs, with four clubs in Cebu, and one club in the disaster epicenter of Tacloban. Lions on the ground were already busy serving people affected by last month’s major earthquake in nearby Bohol. The Wasaga Beach Lions Club also purchased 2 classroom kits through LCIF and UNICEF’s “School in a Box” program. Each kit contains supplies and materials for a teacher and up to 40 students. The purpose of the kit is to ensure the continuation of children’s education by the first 72 hours of an emergency. These funds come from the proceeds of our Home and Garden Show. Although we are a local Service Club, where our primary service is to our community, we are also part of an International Service Club. Besides the Disaster Relief, LCIF provides other grants to Lions Clubs to help with local projects. Canada received $909,715 in Grants in 2012-2013. WE SERVE. If you would like to have Fun and help others in your community and around the world, give us a call at (705) 429-3331 or go to wasagabeachlions.com.

Tea with Artisan’s The fabulous event organized by the Kinette Club of Wasaga Beach was held at the RecPlex as part of the 12th Annual Christmas at the Beach, Tour of Homes. The Tea Room was a wonderful stop on the busy day. High school students from the local area volunteered their time to serve the tea and yummy treats. Many artists, crafters and merchants exhibited their wares and one-of-a-kind items. Story/Photos: Enrique Miranda

Bonnie Dorgelo Jewellery & Painting
Jason Alexander Gallery/Store
Visiting Bonnie Dorgelo’s studio boutique at 48 Pine St. in Collingwood is a must see opportunity! Bonnie is an accomplished jewellery designer and contemporary abstract painter. Her recent collection of EARTH paintings are inspired by the colourful moment to moment changes of nature, of our ever changing selves and of the ongoing creative process.
A graduate of Ontario College of Art and Design, Jason worked in advertising and taught painting and design at the Centennial College before devoting himself full-time in 1995 as an independent visual artist and a business owner.
“The spiritual thread that quietly weaves it’s way through all that is impermanent is what captures my attention.” To create the EARTH series Bonnie allows and encourages an interplay of fluid acrylic paint resulting in engaging aerial perspectives, landscapes and waterscapes. Her contemporary jewellery collection combines sterling silver and sparkling Swarovski crystal resulting in a distinctive casually elegant line. Bonnie Dorgelo’s Studio Boutique is open daily where she is often found creating custom pieces in both her jewellery and paintings. Phone: 705 441 4109 | www.bonniedorgelo.com
In April 2010, Jason opened “Alexander Gallery/ Art Supplies” located at 78 Hurontario St., across from Collingwood’s Town Hall. Daily, you will find him working in the fine art supply store, or in his studio in the back, painting his next exhibition. It is Southern Georgian Bay’s only art supplies store exhibiting the local artist and artisans communities across the region. Since 1995 Jason’s signature paintings have garnered increasing popularity, critical acclaim and growing demand. He is presently exhibiting his paintings in 10 galleries across North America. He captures the physical and emotional spirit of an imaginary world and invoke the imagination that takes you on a journey through a vibrant modern landscape. They delight the eye and appeal to anyone with an appreciation for highly energized representational art. Jason’s artist style has been compared to the work of the Impressionist and Fauvist painters. Our Armed Forces Visit Collingwood Nursing Home
Merry Christmas from your friends at
Wishing You and yours a Happy Holiday Season and All the Best in 2014!
In what is now a tradition, following their responsibilities at various Remembrance Day services, members from our Canadian Armed Forces spend a couple of hours with residents and staff at the Collingwood Nursing Home. This annual visit has become an eagerly anticipated, very meaningful and highly cherished event for all those involved. You can see it in the eyes of the seniors and military personnel alike as they reminisce, share stories and just spend some quality time together. A very mutually rewarding and heartwarming time to say the least. Thank you so much to our friends in uniform for all you do in the service of our nation and for your caring nature and kind deeds. This year Santa arranged for a special helper as he enlisted popular Canadian TV personality Rick Mercer to lead the parade with the CCI Community Marching Band. As always kids of all ages had a marvellous time and the beautiful floats, marching bands, twinkling lights and magic of the season almost helped to forget the frostbite, frozen fingers and toes! Add the scallops and quickly fry on both sides for 2 or 3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. 3. R emove the meat from the skillet and arrange in a warmed serving dish. Pour the wine into the hot skillet. 4. L et the alcohol evaporate, then scrape the base of the skillet thoroughly to amalgamate the contents with the wine. Lest We Forget in Collingwood
TD Canada Trust
A chilly Remembrance Day morning to be sure... but no more mornings for those who lost their lives serving and protecting our freedom and that of others around the globe. Cold chill... but not as cold as the chill of death that has enveloped the battlefields through countless wars. Silence, the kind of quiet where you can hear your heart beating and the ringing in your ears, unlike those brave souls whose hearts no longer beat and the last sound they heard was the crack of gunfire and shells exploding. Prayer, our hearts and voices offering up thanks and praise to God for those whose hearts are at rest and voices forever silenced. Thanks, what we should give to those who have endured tremendous hardship, pain and suffering and far too often made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf. Respect... what we should give not just on Remembrance Day, but always to those who serve and have served in our Armed Forces. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Remembrance Day in Stayner Stayner held a Remembrance Day Ceremony on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month at the cenotaph in front of the Clearview Township office. The Stayner branch of the Royal Canadian Legion hosted the service. Photos/Story: Enrique Miranda
by Margot Nicolson The Ski Barn at Blue Mountain The Past Makes a Great Present In 1949 Blue Mountain had a new facility, the Ski Barn. The Ski Barn was built out of an existing barn on the 150 acre property known as the Kinsey Farm (in the apple bowl area). Jozo Weider, the founder of Blue Mountain Resort, used his own techniques for the conversion of the barn. After removing the barn board siding, Jozo used the foundation of the original barn and all the support beams and frame to create the center of activity for the resort. Jozo had cedar rails from old fences on the property cut up into one foot lengths and mortared in between the barns original beam work. Creating a one of a kind design and adding to uniqueness of the facility. The interior of the new facility was original and charming. A large fireplace was positioned at the north end of the building, with a humorous painting by Walter Trier above the mantle of people square dancing. Lighting was supplied by large wagon wheels hung from the ceiling, painted yellow and equipped with lantern bulbs. The second floor offered dormitory style rooms, in a u-shape around the corridor, with a railing to prevent guests from falling down on to the open dance floor below. The walls of the barn were also covered in cartoon like paintings of prize winning cows also by Trier. The ski barn became the center of activity both day and night. The après-ski parties, organized by Jozo, are still to this day, legendary. When Jozo was not available to organize the activities, a movie of the 1948 Olympics would be played, or the P.A. System would be used to play Glen Miller records. Jozo, a strict chaperone, rarely let the activities go past midnight, as he wanted his guests to be fresh and ready for the next day of skiing.
Christmas Craft Show at Georgian Manor Resort People searching for the perfect gift had to look no further than the annual Christmas Craft Show at Georgian Manor. ‘Handmade and homemade is best’ was clearly evident as numerous artisans offered up beautifully designed and crafted products... and at very reasonable prices! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography
The basement of the Ski Barn also served as the foundation for Blue Mountain Pottery. Jozo and Denis Tupy, a Czechoslovakian immigrant who worked as a dishwasher at the resort, also had training in the pottery industry, made several Kilns and utilized the clay that was dug up by bulldozers when the trails were being prepared for the resort. Initially the operation was a small, basically a hobby. Jozo offered courses in pottery-making at the ski barn in the summer as part of an arts and craft program to attract guests in the off season.Very quickly the commercial potential was realized, and Jozo increased the scope of the business. The uniqueness of the pottery and the fact it was made at Blue Mountain out of Blue Mountain clay made it an immediate hit in the international market place. With the increased in demand for the product and need for expansion the pottery was moved to a larger production center and retail outlet on highway 26. The 1960’s brought another expansion to the resort with more runs and the building of the Blue Mountain Inn. The memories of the Ski Barn continue to this day, Collingwood artist Nick Hodson painted the Ski Barn on a warm winter’s day in the early 1950’s; this wonderful image has been reproduced and is currently available through the Georgian Frame Gallery. Meaford Remembrance Day On a very rainy and cold November 11th in Meaford many women, men, students and children lined the town streets to join in on the Remembrance Day celebrations. Wreaths were laid under the statue in honour of the many veterans that went to war to save our beautiful country. We salute and thank all of you that were involved in any way during those war years. Eaglesmith rocks Duntroon Fred Eaglesmith and his Traveling Steam Show rolled into a packed community centre in Duntroon. Acclaimed singer, songwriter and band leader, Eaglesmith is a genuine iconoclast and true original. It’s the natural result of following the cue of his musical career and now 19 albums with the January 2012 release of 6 Volts. Along the way he has gathered a unique set of accomplishments: a Juno Award for Best Roots & Traditional Album, had his music used in films by Martin Scorsese, James Caan and Toby Keith, wrote a hit #1 on the bluegrass charts (“Thirty Years of Farming,” recorded by James King), wowing David Letterman in his U.S. network debut in 2010, and finding his songs included in the curriculum at two colleges.
