5 Easy Ways to Help Your Elderly Parents 1. Stop by for a visit... and bring dinner. Life gets busy, particularly for adult children in the sandwich generation who are taking care of elderly parents and raising children. If you prefer not to do the meal preparation yourself, pick up take out on the way. A quick meal, visit; and you can be on your way to whatever duty calls you. It will mean the world to your elderly parents. 2. Call to see how they are doing. Set a reminder on your phone to regularly check in on your parents. Whether you live 5 miles away or across the country, take the time to call and ask how they are doing. It will brighten up their day! 3. Ask for advice or instruction. Everyone needs to feel valued and that they are helping others. Take time to ask your elderly parents for advice or instruction. 4. Take a day to clean out the garage or wash the windows. Even if your elderly parents are able to keep up their home, those seasonal tasks can prove very difficult for them. Make time to come over and help with challenging seasonal tasks, like cleaning out the garage, washing windows, or raking leaves. 5. Go out for lunch or dessert. Something as simple as a quick lunch or a stop for dessert can mean the world to seniors who spend most days at home. Right At Home Canada/Georgian Triangle is a home health care and wellness provider of medical and non-medical services for seniors and disabled adults, serving the Georgian Triangle, including Collingwood, Wasaga Beach, Stayner, Thornbury, Meaford and Owen Sound. We have a gift shop with beautiful gift ideas for all your holiday needs!

The past makes a great present Unique, custom framed, exclusive holiday gifts are yours! The Georgian Frame Gallery is the perfect place to pick up one of our exclusive Georgian Frame Collection limited edition and open edition prints of historical images from the South Georgian Bay area. ‘Memories of Collingwood Harbour’ by Ray Davidson is a historically accurate image of the Collingwood Harbour in 1915. Featuring the Chicora steam vessel and several Watt’s Skiff in the foreground, with the old wharf and original terminal building this is the perfect gift for anyone with a love of our waterfront! The Craigleith Train Station holds many memories for anyone who remembers coming up on the ski train, or having dinner there when it was simply called ‘the Depot’. “Craigleith in Autumn’ by William Biddle depicts the station in the late autumn in the 1950’s as the train departs the station after bringing up tourists to see the fall colours of the area. Jozo Weider had a vision for the Blue Mountains that is today... more than 70 years after his arrival developing into the village that he envisioned. However, in the beginning there was Jozo’s Ski Barn. The barn was the center of all activity; dining hall, cafeteria, lodging and home to Blue Mountain pottery in the basement. ‘In The Beginning – Jozo’s Ski Barn’ by local artist Nick Hodson is the perfect piece for the skiers in your family,

especially if they can remember the great hot chocolate, pie and of course Jozo’s famous Chili! All images in the Georgian Frame Collection are available framed or unframed. All framing is done on site, we have exclusive designed frame packages available, or you can work with one of our designers and create your own unique frame package. This holiday season give a unique custom gift that depicts the area’s past. The Georgian Frame Gallery is your one stop custom Santa Shop! I “be-leaf” in a green Santa Claus “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” as the song says. Yes, and for many, the holiday season has become the most consumptive and wasteful time of the year. Not to get all humbug on the season, because we can do many things that can change this. It comes down to simple behaviour modifications. Making choices with visions of well-being dancing in our heads. When making purchases be innovative, shop locally and buy green wherever you can; believe that you can make a difference. By buying green we support our communities and as consumers we speak loud about clear and our demand and right to healthy products. You can make a difference for yourself and those whom you love by not just dreaming about, but by choosing a green Christmas this year. You can support people around the globe and help them to meet their own needs by purchasing products that are made by companies that pay their workers a fair wage and ensure healthy, safe work environments. Often those same companies help to build strong communities.

, l a u s a “...c m r a w , y coz ” ! g n i t & invi

Embrace the season with gratitude and knowledge that you are the change for tomorrow.

Amazing finds at Treasure Tails For those who enjoy shopping in Downtown Collingwood, you may have come across a gem of a store called Treasure Tails. From “antiques to amazing finds”, the store has fantastic deals on gently used items including furniture, home décor, clothing and so much more. What some people do not know is the store is owned and operated by the Georgian Triangle Humane Society (GTHS) and all proceeds support their animal shelter! Treasure Tails was founded in 2010 by GTHS Board Member Maggie Lowe. After seeing the success that other charity stores were having in surrounding communities, specifically for animal shelters, she decided to launch a retail store for GTHS. The store started in the old Sears building off Mountain Road, and eventually landed a spot in Downtown Collingwood. Since moving to the Downtown core, Treasure Tails has become a successful venture due to the foot traffic and the amazing donations it receives from generous donors. More and more community members are learning of the store and visiting to “scout” the deals, as new items come in weekly! Treasure Tails receives items from a variety of sources including private and corporate donations. Last year the store received an incredible donation of model home furniture from Sherwood Homes in Collingwood.

Today it is still 100% volunteer run under the direction of Maggie, as well as GTHS Board Member Mary Enrico. As the Director and Assistant Director of Retail, these two work tirelessly to manage the daily operations and a large volunteer group that keeps the store running. There are currently over 30 people who volunteer at the store, and as a team they successfully raise over one quarter of the shelter’s operating budget. If you are interested in volunteering or donating to the store, please contact Maggie at treasuretails@gths.ca or at 705-293-3233. If you are interested in shopping, the store is open Mon-Sat 10am-4:30pm or Sun from 12-4pm. Submitted by: Calla Lyon

Comedy month coming in the New Year

The Journey from Our Field to Your Fork is a Short One

Meaford Hall Arts & Culture Centre is hosting two comedy performances on its stage in January 2015. Canadian comedian Brent Butt and the renowned Second City comedy troupe will both visit the historic venue with performances guaranteed to banish cabin fever and destroy the winter blues. Brent Butt performs Monday, January 12, 2015 at 8 pm. Born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan, Brent discovered early that being funny was a good way to get attention. He honed his comedy in school and at the age of 20 moved to the city to pursue a career in standup. Within months he was headlining top clubs in Toronto, and within a few years he was touring internationally and appearing at major festivals. Brent created the instant TV hit Corner Gas and has lately been working on the highly anticipated feature film Corner Gas: The Movie. Opening for Brent is Canadian comedian Jamie Hutchinson; the two have been working stand-up together for more than a decade.

CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAY SEASON Exceptional Local Food Free-Run Turkeys For Your Holiday Feast Fresh Cut Trees Locally Crafted Greenery & DĂŠcor Gift Baskets

On Saturday, January 24, Second City delivers one of its most popular and criticallyacclaimed productions of all time. Starting at 8 pm, The Meme-ing of Life blends boundless physical humor with hilarious and biting social satire that touches on everything from border security and gun control to the personal and political battles being waged over female reproductive health. In the end, however, this warmhearted comedy emphasizes how it is the little acts of kindness, such as sharing a laugh, that we all cherish most deeply. Both of these shows are going to be a lot of fun and tickets would make a fantastic Christmas gift, especially for someone hard to buy for! Tickets to the Brent Butt performance on January 12 are $45 each. For the Second City performance January 24, tickets are $30. A $60 Comedy Pass gives access to both the Brent Butt and Second City performances with one ticket to each. Purchase tickets through the Meaford Hall Box Office in person at 12 Nelson Street, by phone at 1.877.538.0463 or online at meafordhall.ca.

Cancer survivor Pauline Kelly dropped the official puck and kicked off the night, raising funds for breast cancer research. The game included a contest where six local kids were given the chance to shoot on the net to win a big prize. The evening also included a Toonie Toss and silent auction that featured several big prizes. To mark the occasion the Knights wore pink jerseys teaming up with the Cancer Society and raising $5,400. A Christmas Day Feast The Christmas spirit is alive and well in the Collingwood area. Since February, a group of 16 individuals have been volunteering their time to organize a very special event called ‘A Christmas Day Feast in Collingwood’. After noticing that there were no opportunities to enjoy a community-based, holiday dinner in the town on Christmas Day, they decided to do something about it. Many people struggle during the holidays. Some are unable to put together a Christmas dinner due to financial or emotional barriers while others are alone, new to the town, or simply want to enjoy a special spirit of the holiday with others in the community. Fortunately, a dedicated team of volunteer “elves” have been working behind the scenes to remedy this and to date, community reaction has been overwhelming. Chairperson Marg Scheben-Edey said, “We are so delighted and filled with gratitude for the support that has come forward. Just this week we were thrilled to learn of the significant GOLD level contribution pledged by the Rotary Club of Collingwood South Georgian Bay.” Scheben-Edey went on to say that other local services clubs including the Kinettes, the Progress Club and several local businesses and individuals have come forward with generous donations that have ensured the event will be one to remember for the 160 expected guests. The group is

continuing to fundraise and hopes to meet their goals by the end of the month so final plans can be made. The event takes place on December 25th when there will be two meal seatings; one at 1PM, and the other at 5PM at All Saints’ Anglican Church, who have generously donated use of their Hall. It is a nondenominational event and everyone of all ages is welcome. Each seating will include a home-style meal, seasonal entertainment, activities for children and a little something to take home. Tickets are only available in advance as they are limited to 80 seats per seating, and are available from Treasure Trails at 186 Hurontario St. They are free but for those who can, there is a suggested donation of $3 per ticket.

An event like this needs about 60 volunteers to assist and while 40 positions have already been filled, more help is needed for the later seating. Lest We Forget... Collingwood Takes Time to Remember Prayer, our hearts and voices offering up thanks and praise for those whose hearts are at rest and voices forever silenced. Thanks; what we should give to those who have endured tremendous hardship, pain and suffering and far too often made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf. Respect... what we should give not just on Remembrance Day, but always to those who serve and have served in our Armed Forces at home and abroad. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Habitat Committee Members Needed for Collingwood Build At Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay, the excitement is really “building”! With the recent purchase of property in Collingwood, they are looking to provide simple, decent, affordable housing for hardworking families who could not otherwise afford to own a home. Habitat is looking forward to their most ambitious project to date as they work towards completing two homes in Collingwood. “For every Build, we need to form 6 committees.” said Joy Fleury, Executive Director for Habitat South Georgian Bay. “Most people just think of coming to build when they think about volunteering for Habitat, but there is also a great need for committee volunteers due to the amount of fundraising, planning and support required to achieve our mission.” Committees needed include Construction, Fundraising, Food, Volunteers, Faith Relations, Family Selection and Partnering. “Volunteers are our greatest resource. This includes the invaluable help and dedication of our Committee Volunteers, who really are the heart of the build,” Joy continued. Committee members plan the construction and coordinate with local tradespeople, solicit donations and organize registration for volunteers, arrange for food and refreshments, and raise funds that go directly towards the cost of the build. While the Construction Committee does need volunteers with some skill and experience, you don’t necessarily need to be an expert in any of the other fields to help out. There are many tasks that require only a willingness to learn and work with others. The time you spend volunteering, especially on a committee, will be an extremely rewarding experience and can make an enormous difference in the lives of local families. Since 2003, we have built 9 homes in South Georgian Bay. All of our administrative costs are paid for by the operation of our ReStore located at 155 Sandford Fleming Drive in Collingwood. Habitat ReStores sell quality new and used donated building materials and other products. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Joy at 705-446-9542 or joy@habitatgeorgianbay.ca. Remembering ‘The Great War’ In its fifth tremendously successful year, the Collingwood Gaslight Theatre continues to draw rave reviews from audiences. This year’s production, The Great War, commemorated the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War which saw “seven hundred local men and women serve overseas and sadly experience a 15% casualty rate (5% higher than Canada’s National average)”. This theatrical walking tour of Collingwood has proven to be an annual community favourite as fifteen performances over the four nights of the event were sold out in advance. This top notch production is locally conceived, written, produced and performed... truly community theatre at its best! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

PROFESSIONALS HERE TO HELP YOU Angel Feet Nursing - Keep your feet healthy for life

Help aches & pains after strenuous activity

Tracey Harrison, RPN AFCN, offers in home service specializing in diabetic foot care and advanced nursing foot care. Tracey’s desire for keeping your feet ‘healthy for life’ stands out in her approach to the business, education and passion for health teaching. Working as a nurse, Tracey realized the importance of looking after your feet after working with amputees, treating nail infections, sepsis and wheel chair bound individuals with compromised circulation issues. Each step you take involves a complex network of bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments. This, combined with all of the weight they carry, explains why feet can have problems. Being in a wheelchair also has a different set of challenges for our feet and circulation. Your foot health can be a clue to your overall health, for example joint stiffness could mean arthritis. Tingling or numbness could be a sign of diabetes. Swelling might indicate kidney disease, heart disease or high blood pressure.

With winter weather making attempts to knock down your valiant efforts, sometimes a little bit of a boost is all the encouragement you need! After strenuous activity muscles feel sore, but you are also filled with achievement; and good for you! You deserve a pat on the back. At Spaology, baths aren’t just a luxury for relaxation, they are useful. Relief helps sooth sore muscles so you can work out again tomorrow, to give yourself another win at the gym!

Currently they operate in private homes, Retirement Homes and LTC facilities. Their private home service is very popular with individuals who are not mobile, or still are but like the service of someone coming to their home. Tracey is also a Veterans Affair provider. Most extended health benefits pay for foot care. Nursing foot care is also tax deductible. Nursing foot care is very complex and Tracey takes the time to do a full assessment of your feet, health history, blood pressure and an overall assessment of your health related to your foot care.

Take some time to relax your body and your mind. Their motto is “Bring Back the Bath”! What a great time of year to start to do just that. Taking a 20 minute bath with ‘Rejuvenate’ in the morning helps to clear your mind and get you going! At the end of the day, after the dishes are put away, ask your family and yourself for 20 minutes to take a lovely ‘Tranquil’ bath. Lavender is known for it’s ability to help relieve stress. While bathing, listen to soothing music, use a nice loufa and scrub away the draining day. Whatever you need to do to help keep you calm, relaxed and your mind free of thought and worry. This is some serious YOU time. Check out Spa-ology’s original recipe bath and body products naturally handcrafted in Collingwood at www.spaology.ca.

As winter looms and the ski hills are blanketed in snow, many people are reminded that their knee pain may limit, or even stop, their participation in snow-related sports. Many individuals have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee – this is characterized by a loss of the protective cartilage at the end of each bone in your joint, usually more on one side of the knee than the other. OA generally occurs due to gradual wear and tear of a joint over decades of physical activity, but can also be caused by an injury. For those situations in which surgery is not yet an option, conservative treatments of OA-related conditions can include: • Physiotherapy: OA-symptoms are often related to joint stiffness and weakness of muscles surrounding the affected joint. Physiotherapy treatments should be directed towards restoring as much motion and muscle strength as possible. • Pain relieving modalities: Regulated healthcare practitioners can provide treatments directed towards relieving the symptoms. These options often include muscle stimulation units, laser, ultrasound and analgesic creams. • Oral anti-Inflammatories (NSAID’s) • Cortisone injections: This treatment can help many people diminish or even eliminate their symptoms for an extended period of time • Hyaluronic Acid (HA) injections: This involves an injection of HA directly into the joint to improve the amount of lubrication in the affected knee joint

While these interventions are sometimes successful, patients do not always experience 100% relief and, as a result, regular physical activity becomes increasingly limited and painful. The development of Custom OA Knee Unloader braces have led to another noninvasive, drug-free solution for people suffering from knee OA. These lightweight braces are designed to reduce pressure on the side of the knee that has worn down. Once fitted, these braces are easy to don and, due to their low-profile build, can easily fit underneath your outdoor skiwear. For further information on treatment options, please contact the Orthopaedic Sport Institute at (705) 467-0701 or info@ortho-sport.ca and ask for a consultation with one of our friendly healthcare professionals. Old Baldy Conservation Area Land Purchase

John Nichol’s 35th Annual

Grey Sauble Conservation Authority recently purchased 45 acres of significant Niagara Escarpment land just below Old Baldy Conservation Area near the village of Kimberly. The land features rugged tall cliffs & a sweeping landscape that is the signature of the Niagara Escarpment in the Beaver Valley. The Nature League, along with several other partners, donated funds to enable Grey Sauble to purchase this land. The Nature League has also been involved in the purchase of the Feversham Gorge, & in putting a parking lot at the top of Old Baldy. Submitted by: Janet Howden

Naomi

Naomi is a beautiful, one and a half year old cat that was found pregnant in Meaford. She was a wonderful mom to five adorable kittens, who were all adopted, and is now looking for a forever home of her own. If you are looking for a feline friend, please come to the Shelter to meet Naomi.

Marley

Nine month old Marley is on the lookout for an active forever home! This Husky/Shepherd cross LOVES to run and hopes to find a forever family that enjoys being outdoors. If you are looking for a canine companion, we hope you’ll stop by the Shelter to meet Marle
