Rockin’ the ACC (not the Air Canada Centre) Hawksley Workman and his rockin’ band paid another visit to The Avening Community Centre (ACC). Kevin Baird’s band opened the show with his eclectic guitar, mandolin and tuba manifestations. After a beer and some bowling downstairs at The ACC, the crowd went wild when Hawksley belted out his rockin’ music. Hawksley’s expressive guitar movements enhanced his high energy tunes. Lest We Forget Each year in November, hundreds of commemorative ceremonies and events take place across the country to commemorate Veterans’ Week and Remembrance Day. These are opportunities for all Canadians to recognize the contribution our Veterans have made and to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of Canada. The Town of Wasaga Beach honours its veterans on the Sunday before Remembrance Day with a ceremony at the Cenotaph at Town Hall. Because Wasaga Beach doesn’t have its own legion, members of the legion in Stayner help out with services. Photos/Story: Enrique Miranda

Connecting volunteers in our community The Georgian Bay Chapter of CARP (Canadian Association of Retired Persons) recently received a grant from the Province of Ontario, it will assist in the launch of a new website and volunteer program designed to help seniors stay connected to their communities. CARP, in partnership with the Community Connection and the Volunteer Coordinators Network, recently held an information session to introduce the new site Volunteerconnection.ca as part of an outreach campaign to distribute information and training for the site. It is hoped that this wonderful new resource will streamline the process of connecting volunteers with various agencies and will also focus on educating seniors and older adults about the benefits of volunteering. Seasonal Prehabilitation As Canadians, we have the pleasure of experiencing four seasons which are each accompanied by their own unique challenges. Winter can be a difficult time for some as it welcomes snow and ice maintenance around the home, along with unpredictable walking and driving conditions. At the same time, for many people. The arrival of winter means the return of skiing, snowshoeing, pond hockey, and other outdoor activities. All activities involve muscle groups that can be either overused or underused, and therefore could be prone to injury. The associated risks of injury with sports or winterrelated activities can be significantly reduced or even prevented with the proper preparation. Preparation and prevention of injury is known as prehabilitation, and should be emphasized for both athletes and non-athletes alike. Prehabilitation includes the management of both joint stability and mobility in commonly problematic areas, which in turn are often based on lifestyle. A skier for example heavily emphasizes leg and core strength exercises in the off-season. However, movements opposite those used in everyday activity and sport need to be developed and included in training regimens. Skiers need to shift some focus to releasing and lengthening hip flexors, while strengthening hamstrings and lower back muscles as well. Individuals can be predisposed to certain injuries based on their lifestyle and vocation. For example, Prehabilitation would also be necessary for those with desk jobs where extended periods of time are spent in hip flexion. Proper exercises can serve as a proactive approach to preventing pain and injury to the vulnerable or potentially problematic areas of the body. Take time to understand the positions and movements you perform on a daily basis. If you have a regular routine at the gym, ensure you are complementing your main movements with exercises to target the opposite muscles as well. Implement joint balancing exercises in your daily routine to maintain joint stability and mobility, and help treat the pain before it happens. For information about exercises for injury prevention please contact the Orthopaedic Sport Institute at (705) 467-0701 or info@ortho-sport.ca and ask for a consultation with one of our friendly healthcare professionals. Profile on Business: Handyman Hookup Handyman Hookup, a unique home handyman company, was launched in the Summer of 2015 by Douglas W. Moody. Doug felt that with the growing senior population in this area there was a need for a service that tackles small to medium sized jobs for those who are unable or unwilling to handle the job themselves. It can be very difficult to find someone who is professional and trustworthy to come to your home and assemble a BBQ, hang artwork or install a faucet. These are just some of the reasons why a person would call Handyman Hookup. Doug’s background is quite extensive. He has a solid amount of renovation experience as well as light electrical & plumbing know-how. In addition to the land experience, Doug and his wife lived aboard a sailboat for eight years. From that time on the water, Doug learned very quickly that there was a real need to be a handyman and problem solver, sometimes very quickly. The original concept of the company was designed to utilize semi-retired or retired tradespeople with excellent skills who needed to work, part time or full time. There are many talented tradespeople in the area who are interested in working and who pride themselves on a job well done. Doug is proud to have those people on his team.

There are not many jobs that are too small to handle by The Handyman Hookup Team. Sometimes the small jobs turn into bigger jobs as the project develops. The team at Handyman Hookup do much more than their name suggests, whether it is installing kitchen cupboards, painting, laying down a new floor, a bathroom makeover or a larger renovation. Their specialists also have experience in large and small commercial projects. Doug and his wife are very proud of their family, and especially their new granddaughter. Being outdoor folks, the couple chose the Georgian Triangle Area since they love to hike, ski, snowboard, snowshoe, motorcycle and boat. They couldn’t think of a more beautiful place in which to live their active lifestyle. From a business standpoint, this area also makes sense because there are many people who own secondary residences and entrust Handyman Hookup to care for their properties while away. Doug said that he was surprised at the amount of painting and flooring requests they have received. It seems that painting and flooring are the least expensive ways to get the biggest bang for your buck while renovating a home. Fortunately, they have specialists in both of these areas, and more. While driving down most streets in Collingwood, Thornbury, Clarksburg or Wasaga Beach you can see the number of homes being restored and Handyman Hookup is proud to be a part of that. The Handyman Hookup Team of specialists includes a licensed plumber, a licensed electrician, painter, flooring specialist, carpenter and a general handyman. Doug says that there is no typical day for his Handyman Hookup team, every is a new adventure. Meeting and collaborating with great clients from all walks of life and getting to know more people in this wonderful community is very enjoyable.

Doug describes himself as a problem solver, which is a good person to have in your home renovation project. Some of the renovation jobs that Handyman Hookup has completed have left the clients in awe of their finished projects. A happy client is a good calling card. Doug mentioned that he has learned from many great people who come from different walks of life. Most of all, he has learned that no matter what happens, integrity, communication and mutual respect are the key to success. Need a project checked off your list? Call the experts at Handyman Hookup.

The art of photographing small objects Avid and prospective photographers gathered at the theatre in Chartwell Retirement Home to attend a workshop on Macro Photography, the photography of small objects. After looking at a series of photographs on our historical connections, plants and fungi, they were presented with a brief description on the meaning of Macro Photography, some of the equipment used in the process, and how to take photographs of flowers using water drops as lenses for the images by Judy Morrison and Richard Dewey. Everyone was then given the opportunity to try out their newly gained skills on shells, rock specimens and a setup to photograph through water droplets. It was an enjoyable night for all. Smart painting tips from the experts Painting a room can make a huge difference in its appearance, even if the furniture, décor, and lighting stay the same. However, it takes a lot more work to properly paint a room than many people think. There is an art to sequencing color from one room to another - hallways are the arteries of the house, rooms radiate off the hallways and this palette helps the transition because the colors flow seamlessly. For the best paint job, you’ll need to follow these 7 steps: 1. Clean the walls - remove all dust, dirt, and fingerprints with water, mild dishwashing detergent, and a sponge. Then rinse the walls with clean water to remove soap residue. 2. Tape around the edges of the walls with painters’ tape - make sure to cover all trim, window frames, doorframes, and baseboards that you don’t want to get paint on. 3. Apply primer to the walls - primer will help the final paint job look shinier and have a more even appearance. It will also lessen the number of paint coats needed to fully cover the former colour. 4. Use a paintbrush around the edges - a roller is too big to use in tight spots around the corners and edges (where you applied the painters’ tape), so use a 2-inch angled paintbrush in those harder-to-reach areas to create a buffer of 2 to 3 inches. 5. Paint in the shape of a “W”- start in the corner of the wall and roll up and down in a 1 m x 1 m W pattern; then, fill in the area without removing the roller from the wall. Repeat in the next 1 m x 1 m section until the wall is finished. 6. Paint the trim - paint the mouldings, door, baseboards, and window frames with a 2-inch angled paintbrush. 7. Remove the painters’ tape - make sure to do this before the paint dries, so you don’t peel off any of the new paint in the process. At Wasaga Beach Decorating we can help you choose the perfect colours of paint for your new home. 3-1 Market Lane, Wasaga Beach 705-429-1500 www.wasagabeachdecorating.com

Hope for homeless animals this holiday The holiday season is fast approaching and this time of year brings excitement, merriment, festivities and joy. It is the season to spend time with family and friends, to send messages of love and gratitude, and most importantly to reflect on another year past. At the GTHS animal shelter during the holidays, we decorate our shelter and treat ourselves to goodies and cheer. As a team, we pull together to ensure the animals receive the care they need and that each little soul receives love and affection. Homeless animals arrive to us as strays, surrenders or through transfers from other shelters. The need for space at the shelter becomes pressing as the cold temperatures arrive. Our phones ring off the hook. We work hard to find room for the animals that need us. We anticipate over 150 animals entering our doors this holiday season. Each animal in our care requires vaccines to prevent disease, medications to fight parasites, and veterinary care. In addition, they need clean and warm housing, nutritious food, equipment for health monitoring and nurturing attention to keep their spirits high. Our work with these animals is truly a labour of love. For them, the holidays are just another day where they will be waiting for our care as well as waiting to be
chosen by a family of their own. While they wait, we work to ensure they are safe, healthy and free from fear. We need your help this holiday season. To continue our fight for homeless animals, every holiday season we launch the annual GTHS Supply & Food drive. This event provides our animals with the food, toys, blankets, equipment and supplies they need while living with us. We stock up our shelves and hope that it lasts us the majority of the year. We launch this event by inviting the community to a Holiday Open House at our animal shelter. On Thursday December 3rd, supporters can meet our team, tour the facility and view a behind the scenes of the animals in our care. Please join us on December 3rd to learn some of the stories of homeless animals in your community. In addition to our Supply & Food drive, we appeal to gift givers to consider a holiday gift that helps a homeless pet. Our stores at the shelter (549 Tenth Line) and Treasure Tails (186 Hurontario St.) are filled with money saving coupon books and bright, colourful 2016 calendars. We sell gift certificates to our GTHS Dog School, the perfect gift for the new dog parent! We are selling personally engraved pet tags because they are cute, but also because they help to ensure
lost pets find their way home. Last but not least, we bring in local and high quality t-shirts to suit the avid pet lover in your family. With each gift from our shelter, a small profit is earned towards our mounting operational costs. Your gift gives the gift of hope to a homeless pet. Lastly, to those that are considering a new pet for their family, we ask that you consider adopting an animal that is waiting at our shelter. We have over eighty cats, kittens, puppies and dogs. Adopted pets will bring a love and loyalty into your home that you have never experienced. The relationship between you and your adopted pet will bring you gifts of joy, laughter, peace and pleasure. In many ways, words cannot describe the powerful relationship that can develop between you and an adopted cat or dog. Most importantly, the GTHS team wants to extend a sincere thank you to all for your unwavering support in 2015. We feel incredibly grateful to be a part of such an animal loving community. With your help, we will have taken in a record one thousand homeless cats and dogs. We are so thankful for your support. Have a wonderful holiday season with your human and furry family! Even little ones can help... Meet Autumn, she is 4 years old and loves animals. “This summer we lost Gramma’s dog Coco, a 14 year old Peekapoo. Gramma and I miss him a lot. We wanted to make a difference for the fur kids at the shelter this Christmas in honour of Coco. Gramma and I call ourselves Santa’s helpers as we’re busy making Magical Reindeer Food and we put a picture of Coco and Santa on the back of the label”. Magical Reindeer Food is a minimum $3 donation and is available at these locations: GTHS Animal Shelter, Collingwood Nursing Home Tuck Shop, Blink Eyewear, Blondie’s Hair Salon, The Clever Office and Wasaga Beach Foodland or you can email your order to info@georgianlife.ca. It makes a great gift for your kids, their classmates, and your grandkids. When you buy Magical Reindeer Food your support will give the fur kids a special Christmas while waiting for their forever homes. All costs have been donated by Georgian Life and Gramma, so all money raised goes directly to the Georgian Triangle Humane Society. Submitted by: Selena Blais

Teen Ashlynn Harris, taken too soon
Supporting Access to Mental Health Resources
Tragedy struck a family in Wasaga Beach on November 7th when Ashlynn Harris, just 16 years old, had taken her own life. She was my neighbour. The first few days were excruciatingly painful to say the least, they were in complete shock and disbelief. Word travelled quickly and the flow of people coming through their house must have been overwhelming, but there was so much love and support for them. Friends, family and neighbours brought food, walked their dogs, raked their leaves, played with the kids, anything, just anything to help. CCI and the Wasaga Youth Centre held memorials, flowers and thoughtful words of condolence flooded their home, money was raised by friends, family, co-workers, even complete strangers, to help pay for the funeral expenses. It was incredible to witness how many people came together to help this family deal with this tragedy. Ashlynn was loved by many, and her death confused and devastated them as they remembered the smiling, beautiful girl she was.
Mental illness and addiction impact people in many different ways. With one in five Canadians experiencing a mental health or addiction problem, most of us know someone affected. Studies have suggested that 15-21 percent of children and youth in the province have at least one mental health disorder, and 70 percent of mental health issues and illnesses begin during childhood or adolescence.
Ashlynn’s mom, Amy, posted recently on facebook “I know a lot of you have had questions of Ashlynn’s passing. She was just very sick. Suffering from awful anxiety attacks and depression. This is an illness. She was in counselling. What happened? It was a horrible accident. With no one to blame. Please if any of you are suffering always reach out. Tell someone. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. Ashlynn didn’t mean what happened. She would want us all to be happy. Remember all the beautiful memories with her. Always reach out for help. Much love. Take care of each other and again our family thanks you all for your love and support”. Submitted by: Selena Blais

To support access to resources, the Mental Health at School website (www. Mentalhealthatschool.ca) was created in partnership between School Boards and Community Care Access Centres (CCACs) to connect educators, parents and families, providers, teens and kids to mental health and addiction programs and services like the kids help phone (1-800-668-6868; www. kidshelpphone.ca) and Children’s Mental Health Ontario. In compliment to the Mental Health at School site, over 3,000 health services across North Simcoe Muskoka are listed on www. nsmhealthline.ca. This innovative website puts up-to-date information on programs and services at the public’s fingertips, and anyone can call 310-2222 (no area code required) to speak with a caring and certified information and referral specialist to help locate community resources. This public service is available 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Georgian Life • December 2015

A Christmas Day Feast in Collingwood The Christmas spirit is alive and well in the Collingwood area. Since last spring, a group of several individuals have been volunteering their time to organize the 2nd annual Christmas Day Feast in Collingwood. Many people struggle during the holidays. Some are unable to put together a Christmas dinner due to financial or emotional barriers while others are alone, new to the town or simply want to enjoy a special spirit of the holiday with others in the community. A dedicated team of volunteer “elves” have been working behind the scenes to remedy this and community reaction has been overwhelming. Chairperson Marg Scheben-Edey said, “We are so delighted and filled with gratitude for the support that has come forward. Earlier this month we were thrilled to learn of the significant GOLD level contribution pledged by the Rotary Club of Collingwood South Georgian Bay.” Scheben-Edey went on to say that several local businesses and individuals have come forward with generous donations that have ensured the event will be one to remember for the 120 expected guests. In addition, all of the nearly 100 volunteer positions have been filled and the group is now turning its attentions to reaching potential dinner guests. This FREE event takes place on December 25th at 1pm, at the Collingwood Curling Club, who have generously donated use of their Hall. It is a nondenominational event and everyone, of all ages is welcome. This feast will include a home-style meal, seasonal entertainment, activities for children, and a little something for the adults to take home. Reservations are required as we are limited to 120 seats, and can be made by calling 211 (Community Connection). For more info www.CollingwoodFeast.com. David Margesson on Wine - Time for South American Wine Winemaking in South America is primarily concentrated in Argentina and Chile. Part II - CHILE Chile is an emerging wine country that is approximately 5,000 kilometres long by 150 kilometres wide at the narrowest point. The five wine regions are located in the middle section of the country in an almost ideal environment nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountains. The Andes provide an unlimited amount of pure clean water for irrigation and the weather conditions are similar to the Mediterranean, with warm, dry sunny days that are perfect for grapes and other fruit. Because of the physical isolation of the country there are few diseases and pests, which eliminates the need for most chemicals and spraying. Grapes are easy to grow and couple this with the fact that the costs of land and labour are reasonable, the resulting wines represent an excellent quality/ value relationship. The first European vines were brought in from Spain around the early 1500s, and then in the mid-16th century more and better varietals were planted. By the mid-19th century the wealthy landowners and mining barons built estates modelled after the fabulous Bordeaux chateaux and hired French winemakers who planted mostly cabernet sauvignon and other French Varietals. Winemaking was mostly uneventful during the 20th century because of political instability, high taxes and an unsophisticated local market. In the 1980s that changed due to political stability and a huge influx of foreign investment. Major players from France, California and Spain recognized an opportunity and names including Robert Mondavi, Margaux and Lafite-Rothschild poured millions of dollars into the development of modern wineries capable of producing superb wines. Chile’s wine industry took off. Today Chile is the 8th largest producer of wines in the world producing 1,086,500 tonnes Chile’s main target for export was the U.S. and they were dead on because a real need existed for quality wines at reasonable prices. The Chileans also focused their wines on what was currently popular in the U.S. which included chardonnay, sauvignon
Happy Holidays blanc, merlot and cabernet sauvignon. The U.S. became their largest market and in 1995 a joint venture between Robert Mondavi from California and a leading Chilean producer marketed a very upscale expensive blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and carmenere called Sena. This delicious wine at about $89 rivals many of the best wines in the world and is often sold out before it hits the shelves.

Like Canada and the U.S. the 1995 Chilean wine laws are simple and straightforward: 75 per cent of the grapes in a wine must be from the region on the label; 75 percent of the varietal listed on the label must be what is in the bottle; and if a vintage is specified, 75 per cent of the wine must come from that vintage. Their main red grape varietals are cabernet sauvignon, carmenere and merlot and the whites are chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and sauvignon vert. In 2005 they were the 8th largest producer of wines worldwide producing 1,086,500 tonnes. David and Nina Margesson are the founders of Winetasters of Collingwood, a wine club dedicated to the knowledge and understanding of wines through tasting and education. The emphasis is on fun, knowledge and being social. They cater to both the novice and experienced wine aficionados. How much creative kick can you pack into a square foot? Opening night of the annual Square Foot Show at Loft Gallery Inc. in Clarksburg was a spectacular event. Hundreds of square foot paintings were available from the gallery artists and other local artists. Six festively decorated homes were featured on the self-guided tour as well as a special “house”, an impressive 64 year old stone structure featuring beautiful stained glass windows, the oldest of its kind in Wasaga Beach. The tour also included a visit to the Tea Room at the Rec Plex for some delicious treats. The Christmas Market was open to the public to browse the fine handmade wares and gift suggestions from many artists, crafters and merchants. Photos/Story: Enrique Miranda

Trendy teen fashions for less Trendy Labels held their grand opening on November 7th at 133-3rd St North in Wasaga Beach. Following the success of sister store Little Labels, the new store is designed for teenagers and young adults. Kim Blakeney, a co-owner of Little Labels, recognized the need for a place where teens and young adults could find affordable trendy clothes close to home. They buy only the most stylish gently used clothes and accessories and sell them at up to 70% less than mall prices. Unlike consignment stores, you can earn cash on the spot when you sell your like-new fashions for guys and girls. The inventory is ever-changing so pop in often! Photos/Story: Enrique Miranda

Money raised at concert for a lot of new smiles Fred Eaglesmith and his Travelling Steam Show performed to a full house of eager fans at The Nottawa Community Centre on November 21st. Fred and his cast of musical characters had the crowd in the palm of their hands with their colourful antics. At the end of the show, Fred invited the audience to bid on a home-made pie to raise money for Operation Smile. The winning bid was $150. Fred’s awesome fans have helped to raise over $45,000 for Operation Smile, a charity that provides operations for children in Third World countries who are born with cleft lips, palates and other facial deformities. It’s a simple procedure but many families in developing countries simply can’t afford it. Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography

The Craigleith Train Station Since its construction in 1878, one of our most endearing and enduring landmarks is undoubtedly the Craigleith Train Station. Long a staple of travellers coming to and fro from nearby Collingwood, the fact that there were two trains daily meant that one could travel either way making a return visit on the same day or evening entirely possible. It also meant that students from the area attending school in Collingwood no longer needed to board there, but could now commute. This might seem rather strange to us now, but consider that there were no automobiles in that era, and the primary form of transport over land was horse, horse and buggy and rail, or by foot! I’m sure many folks have listened as their grandparents told them about “walking to school three miles in the snow”, ha ha! As skiing started to become popular in the 1930’s, the station saw a new purpose. The “Ski Train” was a term coined for the excursions that many took to partake in the sport at nearby Blue Mountain. By the end of the Second World War, the members of The Toronto Ski Club had focused their attention on the area surrounding Craigleith, and the interest in skiing grew exponentially. Although the “Ski Train” ran for but a short time, it fostered fond memories for many who grew up and spent time enjoying recreation in the area. As roads improved, travel by rail waned in popularity. In 1960, the last passenger trains made their run and then service was discontinued. The little station sat alone and forgotten amongst the lilacs until it was moved to new foundations just east of it’s original site. After that, it saw new life and purpose when it was resurrected as a restaurant by local residents Ken and Suyrea Knapman. Not only were the Knapman’s excellent restauranteurs, they were avid historians who preserved the heritage of the station, and the area as well. The “Depot” as it was affectionately known, was for many a place of meeting for a good meal and good conversation. My folks used to make it an annual tradition to spend New Year’s Eve there as the Knapman’s were dear family friends. Today, the little red station has seen new purpose as the Craigleith Heritage Depot Museum, showcasing items of the history of The Blue Mountains dating back an amazing 445 million years! From moving people to and fro, to transporting folks back in time, this beautiful little station has served us all very well over its lifetime. PT me! Dora Hi, my name is Dora. I miss my previous owner because she passed away & unfortunately no one else was able to keep me permanently. I was brought here to find another home. There were children & dogs in my temporary home & since I was not used to it I became very unhappy & defensive. In a peaceful & safe environment I do like to explore like “Dora the Explorer” so I am dreaming of being able to have my own happy space to wander about & relax. Being at the shelter is OK I guess but as they say “there’s NO place like Home “! A-Doringly Yours, DORA XO

Just give my friends a call at 705-445-5204 ext 229 or send a quick email to dogadoptions@gths.ca and they will set up a time for us to meet. Hope to meet you real soon - Love, your friend BEAU xoxoxo Please note: these animals were available for adoption at the time we went to print. If you think that we might be the perfect forever friends, please call 705-445-5204 ext 229 or send an email to dogadoptions@gths.ca and set up a time for us to meet and get to know one another.

Very ‘Sporty’ Collingwood! “Our Sporting Heritage” was the theme for the 6th edition of the Collingwood Gaslight Tour, and this year’s outing was a tremendous success garnering rave reviews from audiences. All shows over the four nights (November 5-8) were sold out well in advance, once again proving that this amazing theatrical walking tour of Collingwood has become a perennial community favourite. This top notch production is locally conceived, written, produced and performed... truly community theatre at its best! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography
