33 boys and girls ages 9 to 14 came from St. Mary’s, Admiral, Connaught, Mountain View and Beaver Valley schools to compete in the Knights of Columbus Basketball Free-Throw in January. Greg Paupst started the competition by making a hook shot from the top of the key (the shot had nothing to do with talent and everything to do with the luck of the Irish). A special word of thanks is warranted for Denis Farley’s talent in the use of calligraphy: each one of the winners’ certificates were hand written by Denis making them a very special encomium along with the trophy. A good time was had by all. Submitted by: Greg Paupst .

Georgian Hills Frozen Grapes On January 6th the winter conditions were perfect for picking the frozen grapes at Georgian Hills Vineyards. 24 volunteers and staff were up early to brave the cold to pick grapes from over 2,000 Vidal Blanc vines. Expecting a low yield, they still picked over one ton of frozen grapes. The grapes were immediately pressed while the temps were below -8c to extract a small amount of sweet nectar which will make the award winning Frozen on the Vine dessert wine. This year the quality and flavours were exceptional, we look forward to the release of this 2014 vintage sometime in 2 years or more. To taste the current 2011 vintage of Frozen on the Vine visit Georgian Hills Vineyards any day from 11am-5pm at their tasting room on Grey Rd 2 just south of Thornbury in Beaver Valley. www.georgianhillsvineyards.ca | 519-599-2255 Submitted by: Robert Ketchin

In today’s world of information overload, having access to a team of professionals that can help you understand your options and make informed choices makes a lot of sense. People moving to the area will eventually look for someone to deal with in their own community. Driving back to the city for meetings when you live up here eventually gets tiring. Brian and his team work mostly by referral but are willing to meet to see if there is a fit with their team and people’s goals and expectations.
It’s free!
Brian recently completed his Elder Planning Counselor designation. As people age they are facing new challenges and helping people become prepared for change in health, income needs, accommodations etc., is crucial to the success of any financial plan. When he isn’t helping his customers plan their finances, Brian is known to express his creativeness in water colour as a locally recognized and celebrated artist. His paintings often depict people, landscapes, and water which have been featured in places such as the Rotary of South Georgian Bay calendar and the walls of Team Approach Planning. This office is more like an Art Gallery than a financial planning office. “Situations happen every day in life and are fun to capture and paint,” says Brian. His true passion for painting, coupled with his friendly and caring personality have all been catalysts in triggering the demand for his work. He sells his impressive paintings as well as limited edition cards of them, with the proceeds going to support Brian’s charitable and mission activities which include First Presbyterian children initiatives, mission work involving youth, African mission, The Door, Youth for Christ, Power to Change, supporting mission awareness and fundraising, Cystic Fibrosis, Cancer research and many more. If you want to work with a financial advisor who cares more about you than your money, or if you are celebrating a special occasion and you want to purchase a personalized gift for that perfect someone, contact Brian and he will gladly create your water colour masterpiece. David Margesson on Wine Red Wines
There are only four red varietals that are considered classic from amongst the over 5,000 grape varieties. They are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Syrah. These four are used to make the bulk of the most significant red wines in the world. Before I discuss the four classics, there is an interesting trend taking place – “Red Zinfandel”. This magnificent red wine is not to be confused with the poor quality, white Zinfandel. Red Zin is rapidly becoming a favourite with many wine drinkers due to the fact that it represents an excellent quality/value relationship with a full body, spicy, and peppery great taste. California has mastered the art of making great red Zin. In the past year, the liquor store is stocking considerably more Zin than ever before. Until now, this has been a well-kept secret. There are many fine choices starting at $10 with very good ones at $15 - $30. In Italy, Red Zinfandel is called Primitivo. Try the Luccarelli Primitivo from Italy at $9. LCBO # 253856. NOTE: For best results, decant into a wide based decanter for 2 hrs prior to drinking. See other great values at the end of article. Cabernet Sauvignon: There is a wide range of quality and structure in Cabernet Sauvignons and the great ones from Bordeaux, Italy, and California etc. can evolve into magnificent, rich, and complex wines through aging and proper cellaring. Some of the great clarets age and evolve in the bottle when properly cellared for up to 25 + years resulting in exceptional wines. Great Cabs are grown throughout the world including Argentina, Australia, California, Chile, France and Italy. Decent tasting Cabs range from $12 - $20 with the most expensive ranging up to $1,000 each on release. Remember that some Cabs are best to cellar for several years. Seek the advice of a Consultant.
L. PATTEN & SONS LTD. Quality Custom Homes Since 1958
Pinot Noir: Currently, some of my favourite wine experiences are drinking Pinot Noir. Pinot is usually described in sensual terms because of its supple & silky textures and wonderful earthy aromas. Its exotic tastes include baked cherries, chocolate, plum, cedar, and cigars. Lighter in body & less tannic than Cabernet, Pinot Noir is the most temperamental of wines to produce. Their thin skins make them extremely vulnerable to any changes in weather, climate, soil conditions, etc. At their best they are amongst the most exciting reds anywhere. This grape thrives in cooler climates and as the art of winemaking is improving exponentially, so is the availability of more sensuous and magnificent Pinot Noir. Try Pinots from Canada, California, New Zealand, France, and Oregon. You will find very few good Pinots under $17 but seek advice as there are some treasures out there. Try some of the great Canadian Pinots.

Contact Jerry Patten 705.444.6186 info@lpattenandsons.ca | www.lpattenandsons.ca 6
Merlot: Similar in flavour to Cabernet Sauvignon. Its aromas & flavours include chocolate, mocha, blackberry, plums and cherries. More merlot is produced in its historical home of Bordeaux than even Cabernet Sauvignon. It is usually blended with other grapes but one of the most expensive, greatest & most famous wines in the world, Chateau Petrus, is 99% merlot and in a great year will be released at $700 to over $1,000 per bottle. Try some merlots from Italy, California, Australia and France. Some good choices start at $12- $15
Syrah/Shiraz: Personally, one of my favourites. Syrah or Shiraz as the Aussies call it is an exciting wine with potent aromas of leather, blackberries, smoke and lots of pepper & spice. Great Shiraz come from the Rhone region in France but, the Australians have done a remarkable job of producing an abundance of wonderful Shiraz at good value. Try different Syrah or Shiraz from Australia, France, California, or South Africa. Shiraz represents an excellent quality/value relationship and can start at $10 but try some at $18 + and you may be pleasantly rewarded. Other very good value wines are: Casal Thaulero, an Italian Sangiovese at $$7.75, LCBO # 588996. Also, a nice Shiraz from Australia called Deakin at $9.95, LCBO # 560821. The flavours will greatly improve if you decant the wines. One WOD at a time at Winterfest On January 20th hundreds of Ontario’s fittest athletes crushed some WOD’s (workout of the day). Leaving behind the comforts of the indoor gym, these athletes were tested with extreme workouts both indoors and outdoors at Blue Mountain. Winterfest is free for spectators to watch, people came from all over Ontario to see some incredible displays of athletics. This years UG Series Winterfest event had it all, including one long workout which the athletes completed tasks in order to collect items that went into backpacks. At the end of the day these backpacks full of various children’s supplies were donated to My Friends House in Collingwood. Visit http://www.ugseries.com for more information. The Olde’ Town Terrace Restaurant
Located in the heart of Historical Downtown Collingwood, owned and operated by Sandie Tse-Bandura and Ray Bandura, the Olde Town Terrace is known for fresh prepared food at a great price. The original restaurant was created in 2005 in an 1800 century home where Sandie’s grandparents once lived. The new location has indoor seating for 85 people along with a quaint patio at curbside and a private room that can accommodate up to 50 for birthdays, anniversaries or business meetings. If you’re having a small wedding why not check out The Olde’ Town Terrace to make your special day a great memory. Every appetizer and entrée is prepared fresh. Spring and Fall, The Olde’ Town Terrace is host to Lobsterfest, where the lobsters are cooked live to order. This has become a very popular event so it is a very good idea to book your table in advance.

Add elegance to your home with shutters When it comes to making the tough choice of what to use for interior window coverings, most people consider blinds and/or drapery treatments. Both have their pros and cons, although there’s another option that usually wins hands down shutters! With their crisp, elegant look and a variety of advantages and benefits, shutters are the perfect solution for those who want their window coverings to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Shutters offer a streamlined look that can really pull a room together. With shutters, the louvers are controlled by the center or rear tilt-bar for a seamless look. Though lightweight, Eclipse Shutters are sturdy and engineered to add the benefit of energy efficiency, blocking out the suns hot rays in the summer and cold drafts in the winter. Aside from their effortlessly elegant look, they offer advantages in addition to those mentioned above. Unlike many other brands of shutters, Eclipse Shutters can be expected to last at least 25 years with minimal care. Eclipse Shutters won’t be damaged by the sun since they’re UV resistant, and can’t be damaged by water or steam in high moisture areas. Their greatest advantage is for those who seek control over both light and airflow into their homes. Unlike draperies and blinds, shutters provide ultimate control over both. The Iron Skillet
As a classically trained chef, Tony has been cooking up his special dishes for over 20 years. After serving it up in Toronto at the Four Seasons he travelled Europe, working in many small kitchens in different countries getting a feel for different ethnic dishes. After travelling extensively he returned back home to Collingwood to start his own restaurant. Tony has created menu items to take in different flavours such as the Skillet Pulled Pork Tamale, Fisherman Stew, Stuffed Yorkshire Pudding, and he is offering his signature dishes like Schnitzels, Enchiladas, Jambalaya, and of course his Skillet dishes like Mussels and Trout. These are just a few of his ‘taste’ assured specialties. Many customers come into the Iron Skillet for the Feature Board, it changes daily and you never know what will be on it. Because everything is made to order, people with special dietary needs can discuss food options with their server before ordering. Tony’s attitude to food is ‘Go Big or go Home’ and this still holds true at the Iron Skillet. 20 Balsam Street Unit 2 Collingwood | 705-444-5804 | theironskillet.ca

Shoulder pain keeping you up at night? The shoulder is a very complex joint comprised of 3 bones – the humerus (arm), collarbone (clavicle) and shoulder blade (scapula), which articulate at 5 joints. There is also an extensive network of muscles including the 4 muscles of the rotator cuff, ligaments and joint capsule that assist with the shoulder’s mobility and stability. Because the shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint, it is capable of moving in multiple directions at the same time. However, due to the mobile nature of the joint (think golf ball on a tee), the shoulder is a notoriously unstable area that is prone to many different injuries. Common causes of Shoulder Pain • osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis • bursitis (swelling of the bursa sacs, which protect the shoulder) • tendinitis (inflammation and swelling of tendons i.e. rotator cuff, biceps) • bone spurs (bony projections that develop along the edges of bones) • poor posture (often results in impingement or pressure on rotator cuff tendons) • dislocation and/or separation of joints While many of these conditions can significantly impair your activities, assessment and treatment can help restore normal shoulder function and eliminate your pain. Methods of rehabilitation that are commonly used include: • Pain relieving modalities i.e. ultrasound, muscle stimulation, acupuncture • Manual therapy i.e. joint mobilizations and manipulations, soft tissue release • Strengthening exercises, scapular muscles and postural muscles • Kinesiotaping for postural re-education If conservative therapy is unsuccessful, the Orthopaedic Sport Institute medical director, orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Olivia Cheng, is available for timely consultation. We have access to our own diagnostic ultrasound, shockwave therapy, PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma), and if necessary, surgery.
For further information on managing your shoulder pain, please contact the Orthopaedic Sport Institute at (705) 467-0701 or info@ortho-sport.ca and ask for a consultation with one of our friendly healthcare professionals.
Georgian Bay much talked about at boat show
Nothing Says
I Love You
Like a Heart Shaped Pepperoni Pizza
Visitors to the Toronto International Boat Show had the opportunity to learn a lot about boating on Georgian Bay thanks to marine expert Ken MacDonald, who is Director of Marina Operations for Parkbridge Lifestyle Communities Inc. Mr. Macdonald spoke about Georgian Bay a number of times throughout the weeklong boat show. He punctuated his speeches with an audio-visual presentation which featured many photographs of places between Midland/Penetanguishene and Killarney/Little Current. As well as the photographs, which often detailed historic places, or boating tips, Mr. MacDonald talked about the Georgian Bay communities and their attractions. He also provided information from a Parkbridge Lifestyle Communities’ booth at the boat show, along with Bay Port Yachting Centre general manager Scott Cain. Parkbridge Lifestyle Communities Inc., is Canada’s leading owner, operator and developer of residential, land-lease communities, recreational resorts and marinas. Parkbridge’s Eastern Region office is in Wasaga Beach. Submitted by: George Czerny

Ask Susan
by Susan Dyment
I always seem to put fat on my belly, how can I lose it there and keep it off? Belly fat is not limited to the extra layer of padding located just below the skin (subcutaneous fat). It also includes visceral fat - which lies deep inside your abdomen, surrounding your internal organs. Although subcutaneous fat poses cosmetic concerns, visceral fat is linked with far more dangerous health problems and an increased risk of premature death - regardless of overall weight. Some studies found that even when individuals were considered a normal weight based on standard body mass index (BMI) measurements, a large waistline increased the risk of dying of cardiovascular disease. A waist measurement of 35 inches or more for women and 40 inches or more for men indicates an unhealthy concentration of belly fat and a greater risk of problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Visceral fat does respond to the same diet and exercise strategies that can help you shed excess pounds and lower your total body fat. To battle the bulge: • Eat a healthy diet. Emphasize plant-based foods, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and choose lean sources of protein and low-fat dairy products. Limit saturated fat, found in meat and high-fat dairy products, such as cheese and butter. Choose moderate amounts of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats — found in fish, nuts and certain vegetable oils instead. • Keep portion sizes in check. Even when you’re making healthy choices, calories add up. At home, slim down your portion sizes. In restaurants, share meals or eat half your meal and take the rest home for another day. • Include physical activity in your daily routine. Aim for at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity, such as brisk walking or at least 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity, such as jogging. Strength training exercises are recommended at least twice a week. To lose excess fat and keep it off, aim for slow and steady weight loss - up to 2 pounds a week. At Diet Center we teach you how to lose weight permanently with real food you buy from the grocery store.

Not all Olive Oils are Equal Extra virgin olive oil refers to oil that comes from fresh olives that were milled within 24 hours of their harvest, and they can’t be treated chemically. In other words, authentic extra virgin olive oil is a fresh fruit juice. Like other types of fruits, olives contain a vast array of polyphenols, or natural antioxidants that protect the plant The Spa at Georgian - Georgian Life ad 3.25”w x 5”h during its lifetime. The older the plant, the more each one contains. Fresh harvest olive oil is a medicine, as much as it is a food, because of these antioxidants.

Beware of the imitators! Many olive oil brands carried by supermarket and gourmet food stores fail to pass laboratory tests as they have been adulterated with a cheaper, refined oil, oxidized by age or too much light or heat exposure, or they contained olives that have been damaged or rotten from the start. Any product labeled “light” or “pure” should be avoided. Even a true extra-virgin olive oil loses its health benefits two years after harvest and unfortunately most of the bottles at the supermarket and gourmet food stores are at least that old. For those that want the full health benefits of olive oil there are things to consider when buying. Look for a harvest date. Without that date, which should be posted or on the bottle, you can’t know if the oil is fresh. The lack of date can also mean that the oil was blended with leftover oil taken from several years. To enjoy the best cooking performance and reap the greatest health benefit, the fresher the oil, the better. Taste the oil. The peppery sensation at the back of your throat that you only get from fresh oil is the potent anti-anti-inflammatory property. Failure to taste any pepper at all, likely means you have old or adulterated oil. Smell the oil. Do you smell fresh cut grass, artichokes, banana tones? Or does it simply smell like old oil? Examine the bottle. If it is pre-bottled, the bottle should be dark. Never plastic! Collingwood Olive Oil Co. is the only endorsed olive oil supplier in the Collingwood/Blue Mountains area by investigative journalist and bestselling author, Tom Mueller. The Blue Mountain Village Foundation made a donation of $7,200 to Home Horizons. Doris Sensenberger and John Devries received the cheque from the Foundation board members Bruce Melhuish, Troy Speck and Stacy Manning. “The Foundation reviewed many applications for funds and all were very deserving,” says Don Braden, President of the Foundation. “We chose to support Home Horizons Life Skills Workshops which helps mothers and children understand the necessity of boundaries, increase parental knowledge about nutrition and physical health and teaches budgeting.” “This funding will provide workshops that are open to women in the community to gain valuable life skills, create support networks and help many families become active community members. With the assistance of donations like this one from the Blue Mountain Village Foundation, we have provided 84 families and 138 children a home, counselled them, provided workshops, transitioned these families into permanent housing and assisted them when they needed help to retain their permanent housing.” Says Doris Sensenberger, Executive Director, The Blue Mountain Village Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our local communities through its financial support of registered charitable organizations whose activities provide benefit to the residents of our local communities, with an emphasis on children and family programs. Information about filing applications for funding and events can be obtained at the Foundation website at www.bluemountainvillage.ca/foundation/ For information about the Foundation, contact Don Braden at 705-444-7398 ext. 223. Who brought the cool? The Soul Brothers thrilled the crowd at the Marsh Street Centre in Clarksburg. The concert was sold out and jammed to the rafters with people singing and dancing all night long. The brothers Dahl kept the energy level high and crowd cheering for more. The rest of the band were outstanding musicians in their own right and the performance was professional from start to finish. This was a great way to kick off the season and our thanks goes out to all who supported us. Check out our website ww.marshstreetcentre.com for upcoming shows and events - and meet me at the Marsh! Giving is easy...
My name is Pamela Quirk Harper Government Improves Accessibility for Canadians with Disabilites in Simcoe-Grey The Honourable Dr. Kellie Leitch, MP Simcoe-Grey, on behalf of the Honourable Candice Bergen, Minister of State for Social Development, announced improved access for Canadians with disabilities to programs and services in their community. The Town of The Blue Mountains is receiving $16,250 from the Enabling Accessibility Fund to improve accessibility for Canadians with disabilities. This funding will allow the Town of The Blue Mountains to provide accessible door mechanisms in the Town Hall main floor washrooms. This will allow visitors living with a disability to enter washroom areas without assistance. “The Town of The Blue Mountains greatly appreciates the support of the Government of Canada to upgrade the accessibility of our Town Hall. The Town supports the goals of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and we continue to work hard to increase access for all our residents and visitors. We take great pride in the level of accessibility we have been able to put in place, and with the support of the Government of Canada, we are now able to take that to the next level.” – Mayor John McKean, Town of The Blue Mountains.
My Mom ran the RNA program at Collingwood General and Marine Hospital for 10 years so it was a part of my life from childhood. When my father was admitted to the hospital 4 years ago with a heart attack; it was a life and death situation for him. Collingwood General and Marine Hospital provided excellent care and he was given his life back. It was my catalyst to support an organization that meant so much to me. Giving was so easy – I consulted with an insurance specialist, took out a policy that cost me less than my annual typical donation. Over ten years, I will have this policy paid off and it hasn’t impacted my life at all. However, the financial implications to the Hospital are tremendous and will result in a significantly higher gift. Since my parents as well as brother and his family still live in Collingwood and I enjoy coming up here, I wanted to keep the support in this community. I am also very confident in the Foundation’s use of my money. They are excellent stewards and custodians of my support. Please join me in supporting the great work at the Hospital – giving is easy – just call 705-444-8645 or email kerrj@cgmh.on.ca to get started. It affects us all, and your donation could make a difference in life or death.

Ice Damming requires attention Ice damming is a common problem that is evident in winter by icicles hanging from the eaves, snow buildup in the roof valleys and quick melting of snow from the roof. These problems are the result of inadequate ventilation and/or insulation in the attic area. Icicles hanging on the edge of your roof may look pretty but can cause real problems for your eaves, roof and inside your home. The problem is caused by the roof being warmer than the external air temperature. Snow on the roof melts and refreezes, typically in the roof valleys and along the eavestrough. This creates a block or “dam” so that additional melting builds up in these areas. Damming can lift shingles and valleys and create leaks in the roof. Excess moisture can form on the inside of the roof resulting in the growth of mold.

In summer, inadequate ventilation will cause upper level rooms to be hot. But more than being uncomfortable, it impacts the shingles. Excess heat “bakes the shingles” from the underside because it cannot exit through the vents. The result is reduced life expectancy of shingles and can limit the manufacturer’s warranty.

The solution is roof ventilation and proper insulation. Increase the amount of insulation. Typically to an R50 value, which is recommended on new homes. Add vents to roof - there should be one vent per 200/300 square feet of roof area. Add or replace ventilation in the soffits. Air flows in through these vents and exits through the roof vents. The best time to make these changes is prior to replacing your roof. Solving the ice-damming problem will make your home more comfortable, reduce heating costs and save money on roof repairs and prevent premature aging of the roof. At AM Roofing we can improve both the insulation and ventilation issues on any home or building. Our estimators always make a thorough check of the roof ventilation & insulation before providing a quotation. Contact us at: 9485 Beachwood Rd. Collingwood Phone: 705-445-3540 | www.amroofing.ca
Extreme eyelashes with extensions Smile with your eyes with longer, thicker, more beautiful lashes! Some women think that diamonds are a girl’s best friend. Others may argue that they’d rather possess long, luscious lashes. Most turn to daily applications of mascara to pump up the volume and length of eyelashes, or perhaps false eyelashes for a more dramatic effect. Eyelash extensions add length and thickness to the lash line. The lashes are waterproof, weightless and a stunning way to wake up every morning without the use of mascara. A most effective and glamorous way to bring out a woman’s natural beauty. Various lengths and types of lashes give you your unique personal desired effect. Whether you’re looking for an everyday look to open up the eye, lashes for your Wedding Day, vacation or that special occasion - lash extensions will transform your eyes.
