Well winter is in full swing! It started particularly early this year, then died off for a few weeks and over Christmas break we’re covered in the white fluffy stuff once again. I hope you had the chance to slow down and enjoy the holiday festivities with friends and family. I am finally out of my triptophan coma (still enjoying turkey soup and homemade potpies) and so far successfully warded off the nasty flu and cold bugs that are overwhelming my household right now. My daughter especially loved Christmas this year at the age of almost four. Since December 1st, she would ask every morning if it was Christmas Eve yet? She only managed to unwrap one gift while we weren’t looking. And the tree only fell over once. Lots of memories were made throughout our travels to visit family and many more right here at home. I thought I would share this recipe in memory of my father who would not go a winter without making some maple taffy on snow. Boil pure maple syrup to “soft ball” stage (235˚F). Drizzle on well-packed clean snow then wait 30 seconds. Roll your maple syrup taffy around a popsicle stick. Make sure it is cool before licking. (It is essential that pure maple syrup be used and not any other maple-flavoured syrup). Whether you love or hate the snow, there are a ton of things to do this month. You can enjoy the beauty of the season on skis, skates, snowshoes or snowmobiles. If staying warm and cozy is more your style check out the many art galleries, boutiques and restaurants in all of the communities we are lucky enough to live within an hour of. Step outside your comfort zone and try something new this winter! It is here to stay, so stock up on hot cocoa, bundle up and make the most of it. I want to wish everyone a fantastic 2015. To my team at Georgian Life - Sal, Dave, Bryan, Enrique, Kimberley and Laz - thank you for all of your hard work this past year. You make Georgian Life come to life each and every month and I look forward to another 12 issues with you! HAPPY NEW YEAR! And see you out there.

Discover new tastes with the Winetasters of Collingwood Winetasters of Collingwood is a club dedicated to the knowledge and understanding of wines through tasting experiences. Now in its twelfth year, Winetasters provides a wonderful service to a community of wine lovers.
everyone whether you are an expert or a newcomer to the wine scene. During the fun tasting sessions, there are lots of opportunities to ask questions and share information. The Margessons also talk about The Best Wine Buys, Wine Terms, Dos and Don’ts and what the experts do.
This Club was founded by David and Nina Margesson as Winetasters of Muskoka and ultimately grew to over 100 members. David and Nina moved to Collingwood in 2012 and started Winetasters of Collingwood following the successful formula they established in Muskoka.
David has been a wine collector for over 50 years. During that time he has amassed an extensive collection as well as a large body of knowledge about wines.
Their mission is to assist people in making better purchasing choices, how to get the best possible qualityvalue relationship in those purchases and how to properly taste wine so you can appreciate it more. This club is for
Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography meet approximately every six to seven weeks. David and Nina also conduct private tastings for Stags, Bridal Showers, Fundraisers, Social clubs and organizations or in private homes as “something different” for your guests. They will tailor your tasting event to meet selected criteria and to fit any reasonable budget.
Their selection of wines covers every great wine region in the world. During the year members of the Club eventually sample every one of the great wine varietals. At each tasting, they sample, discuss and rate 6 - 8 different wines (in small pours). David and Nina have partnered with The Cheese Gallery in Thornbury to pair a select cheese with each of the wines tasted. Pairing of wine and cheese brings out the best possible taste in both. Venues such as Osler Brook Golf Club and Santini’s Restaurant have been wonderful settings for Winetasters’ meetings which attract 25-30 participants. The Margessons want to make it the best experience possible by teaching people to expand their wine horizons in a social setting. They also share their enthusiasm of being connoisseurs. The value of the wines being tasted often range from under $10.00 up to $300.00. The Winetasters of Collingwood
Once you move out of your comfort zone to gain more confidence in tasting new and different wines, you will enjoy and appreciate more of the various wines from around the world. New Year - New You!
any of us will start the year with grand plans and the best of intentions to do things differently this year! If you are planning a “do-over” in an area of your life, here are five tips to help you make it happen.
Start Your Year Off Right With
Healthy Options
1. Keep it simple – start with the end in mind, describe what you want in one sentence. For example, if you want to be fit maybe your goal is to run in a marathon in the fall. 2. Be realistic – make sure it is attainable. Change usually takes more time than we think. As a toddler you had to learn to crawl before you could walk, run or jump. 3. Believe in you – be kind to yourself every day and keep it positive. Act as if and remember success happens first in your mind. 4. Work the plan – take action consistently, join a group, hire a Coach, add a work-out buddy. Do what you need to do to stay on track. 5. Measure your success – identify the steps to achieving your goals, break it down into smaller steps. Write down your progress, later it will help you to see how far you have come. Just start and if you go off track (and most of us do) go back to number one and start again. When we really want to, we can do anything! Starting is the hardest part. Remember all the other times in your life when you made it happen even when it seemed impossible. You can do it! Transforming The Lives of Riders With Disabilities Wild West Week, The Amazing Race, a Horseback Rally and Olympics on Horseback... these are just some of the themes we incorporate into our programs at Hope Haven to make therapeutic riding a fun and enjoyable activity! As part of riders exploring their capabilities and expanding their riding skills, Wild West Week provided both riders and volunteers with the chance to sport their favourite Western attire and help track down the stolen loot on horseback. A decorative ‘Frontier Town’ setting complete with cactus plants and other decor added to the experience. The Amazing Race on Horseback offered similar fun while riders wore their favourite costumes, solved clues and performed a variety of challenging tasks. Next up? A horseback rally and Hope Haven’s version of Olympic events on horseback... guaranteed to be just as exciting! Of course, none of this would be possible without the amazing commitment of our volunteers who dedicate their time to enhance the rider’s experience. The generous donations made by both individuals and companies are also key. The benefits of therapeutic riding are impressive and it has long been considered an accepted form of treatment for a broad range of physical, emotional and behavioural disabilities. Participation improves communication skills, promotes independence and integration resulting in the development of increased self-confidence, motivation and a sense of achievement. Hope Haven Therapeutic Riding Centre is a non-profit, charitable organization that offers a variety of programs for individuals with disabilities and their families. Providing a transformative experience is our key mission and one of the ways we do this is through our distinctly designed Programs. Interested in learning more or volunteering? Please visit Hope Haven’s website at www.hopehavencentre.org Interested in making a donation? Simply click on the Canada Helps logo while you are visiting our website. We’re all addicts... taking a spot on the addiction/craving/compulsion spectrum, which ranges from ”slightly over-fascinated but OK” to “desperate, unhinged, can’t stop”. I’m tolerably at the gentler end as an over-reader; others trend unhappily the other way, having an excessive physical or psychological dependence on food or alcohol, cigarettes, prescription drugs, internet surfing/texting/chatting, TV, computer games, gambling, shopping, shoplifting, hoarding, sex, work, exercise, hobbies and more. We can think of cause simply as a cycling of stress-addictive action-temporary relief-renewed stress-repeat. Or as triggered by some combination of early or current trauma, unbalanced brain chemistry, nutritional deficiencies, vulnerable self-image, lifestyle habits, or spiritual yearnings. For forty years, I’ve explored “alternative” ways to help addicts anywhere on the spectrum, developing expertise in powerful “fast-acting” interventions like EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), NLP (Neuro-Linguistic-Programing), hypnosis, and transformational bodywork, complemented by longer-term modalities like mindfulness practice, somatic meditation, Qigong, and undogmatic diet counselling. There’s always a way. Now’s a good time. Shall we proceed? Jim Richardson, MEd, NLPMP, CH www.BodyMindCoach.net | 705-445-2613 | jrsoma@rogers.com

Glamapalooza event raises funds for women’s health at the Collingwood G&M Hospital Casey Thomson and Leslie Lewis organized a hugely successful Glamapalooza event in Thornbury on Nov 27th. They presented a cheque for $1260 to Lisa Hansen, Sr. Diagnostic Imaging Technologist at the Collingwood G&M Hospital. These funds will help support the purchase of the new Digital Mammography Unit now available at the G&M Hospital. “Our new technology allows Radiologists to magnify, manipulate and change the gray scale of images to see portions of detail that are critical to diagnosis, Lisa explains. Radiation that the patient is exposed to is also much less than our old unit. Digital images are much faster to upload. There is no waiting for the film to be developed, it’s instant.” “Glamapalooza is about women celebrating together. Supporting the Collingwood Hospital’s Mammogram program is a natural fit as women are impacted”, stated Casey. Submitted by: Jory Pritchard-Kerr

Looking ahead for 2015... As we look ahead to a new year I can’t help but reflect back on the years gone by. As I get older, time seems to evaporate and vanish? Is it me or is it the same for everyone? Now I know there are still 24 hours in a day and I do actually sleep less, so how is it that I feel that some days slip by? There is a lot going on around us. We are bombarded with up to the minute news, messages and advertising everywhere we go. It seems that there is less of us to go around. Time marches on and will continue to do so. I am, however, aware of some of those around us whose time almost stands still. Typically this happens to those who can’t sleep, are lonely, suffering from chronic pain and those fearful of their financial future. There are an increasing number of people who are living longer who face the challenges of chronic pain. Pain that never ceases 24 hours a day… Recently while attending an “EPC” certification course sponsored by “Canadian Initiative for Elder Planning Studies” I learned that chronic conditions such as arthritis, back pain, heart disease and high blood pressure is crippling an already stressed health care system. There are more doctor visits and longer wait times, in a system designed for acute care vs chronic. I also learned statistically, that there is an increasing number of elders who are living longer and aging well. They are exercising, being more active socially and consciously choosing to eat more balanced nutritious meals. As I look ahead I look forward to learning more about aging well. I too can choose to be healthier and choose to be happier. In the coming year I hope you will find some time to help someone who suffers from a chronic condition. It may be a simple visit or running some errands like picking up a few groceries. It may be simply opening a new jar of pickles for someone who has arthritis in their hands. I am confident helping others will ultimately make someone smile, including you! Best wishes. Brian A. Sounds of the Street Kudos to organizer Nicole Hayward-Bishop and all the wonderful performers who participated in the first Sounds of the Street Concert highlighting the incredible talent of some of our local ‘buskers’. In Nicole’s words, “A huge thank you to all of the performers and the people who came out last night! It was such a blast, and I hope everyone enjoyed it. Big thank you to Creemore Coffee Studio for sponsoring the event and providing coffee and treats for everyone, Dave West who took some awesome photos of the performers, and Andrea Rinaldo who let us use her amazing studio space as the venue! Again, thank you to everyone who came out to support the musicians, and I hope to see you at the next one!” Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

was there! Sponsored by: Town of Wasaga Beach Special Events 705-429-3844 x 2287 wasagabeach.com
Our experience at Hope Haven has made us aware that our participants feel the need to connect, the need to achieve, the need to experience success and the opportunity to grow. Our mission is to provide a transformative experience through our unique programs that give our participants the opportunity to address those needs and for each and every rider to explore their potential at a pace that is suited to them. We are excited about the period of growth we are currently experiencing and are actively recruiting to fill positions on our Board of Directors. We are looking for distinctive individuals to assist us through this dynamic time who are willing to share the experience they have gained and who are willing to dedicate time and effort to help us make things happen. In the interest of creating a fully complimented board we are interested in adding members who have experience in board governance, skills related to fund raising, social media and communications as well as building awareness and networking throughout the communities in the Georgian Triangle and outlying areas. If you are interested in learning more about Hope Haven please visit our website at www.hopehavencentre.org. This fun evening featured a kissing booth, photographs with Santa Claus, lots of prizes and some all-around festive cheer. Mad Dog’s owner and host for the event, Bob Madigan said “The reason I’m hosting this truthfully is just to give back to the community. Ski Movie Night raises $12,000 for Cardiac Monitors at the G&M Hospital Nothing better than a hard core ski movie to get you in gear for ski and snowboard season! The Collingwood G&M Hospital Foundation proudly partnered with a local team of volunteers to host the 4th annual Ski Movie Night at the Gayety Theatre. Ski Movie Night lead organizers Kevin Nash and Andrea Baker-Nash present a cheque for over $12,000 to Ernie Purkis, Collingwood G&M Hospital Board Chair for the funds generated from their successful evening. This event enjoyed its fourth year running as a sell-out, and represents the “unofficial” kick off to winter for many local snow sport enthusiasts! Money raised will support the purchase of cardiac monitors in the orthopedic department at the Collingwood G&M Hospital. Made By Maddie My name is Maddie, I am 11 years old and I volunteer at the Georgian Triangle Humane Society. I love helping with the cats and kittens, there is always work to do and a lot of time for cuddles. This year, I really wanted to make a difference. With the help of my family at Leishman Pottery I was able to design and create Christmas tree ornaments to sell. I made 150 ornaments, sold them for $10 and sold out before Christmas! All of the money went to the GTHS. I learned a lot about making pottery, but I also learned how to run a fundraiser. There are so many people that volunteering our community, and I’ve learned how important it can be and how appreciated it is. I really want to thank everyone who helped me create the packaging and sell the ornaments. Thank you to The Print Shop, Loo McNulty Design Studio, Christies Clothing, Currie’s Farm Market, the GTHS, Tabitha for helping me make 50 ornaments and Julie for introducing me to the GTHS and all the great things that happen there! Thank you to everyone that purchased an ornament! Your friend, Maddie

Music Series with Clive Vanderburgh Saturday night is music night at The Bank Café in Creemore. We were wonderfully entertained by the music stylings of contemporary singer, songwriter Clive Vanderburgh. Clive sang and played from his heart and soul about some of his most profound life experiences. An eclectic mix of musical genres, he had a full house singing along and tapping their toes. Clive recently recorded a CD titled “The Nashville Sessions” which he gave away to everyone at The Bank Cafe. Clearview Community Radio sponsors the Music Series at The Bank Café from 7-9 pm every Saturday night as well as live streaming audio of the concert on the internet at: clearviewcommunityradio.org.
